In the nervous system, communication occurs via synaptic transmission where signaling molecules (neurotransmitters) are released by the presynaptic neuron, and they influence electrical activity of another neuron (postsynaptic neuron). The inherent probabilistic release of neurotransmitters is a significant source of noise that critically impacts the timing of spikes (action potential) in the postsynaptic neuron. We develop a stochastic model that incorporates noise mechanisms in synaptic transmission, such as, random docking of neurotransmitter-filled vesicle to a finite number of docking sites, with each site having a probability of vesicle release upon arrival of an action potential. This random, burst-like release of neurotransmitters serves as an input to an integrate-and-fire model, where spikes in the postsynaptic neuron are triggered when its membrane potential reaches a critical threshold for the first time. We derive novel analytical results for the probability distribution function of spike timing, and systematically investigate how underlying model parameters and noise processes regulate variability in the inter-spike times. Interestingly, in some parameter regimes, independent arrivals of action potentials in the presynaptic neuron generate strong dependencies in the spike timing of the postsynaptic neuron. Finally, we argue that probabilistic release of neurotransmitters is not only a source of disturbance, but plays a beneficial role in synaptic information processing.

We studied the hypothesis that synaptic dynamics is controlled by three basic principles: (1) synapses adapt their weights so that neurons can effectively transmit information, (2) homeostatic processes stabilize the mean firing rate of the postsynaptic neuron, and (3) weak synapses adapt more slowly than strong ones, while maintenance of strong synapses is costly. Our results show that a synaptic update rule derived from these principles shares features, with spike-timing-dependent plasticity, is sensitive to correlations in the input and is useful for synaptic memory. Moreover, input selectivity (sharply tuned receptive fields) of postsynaptic neurons develops only if stimuli with strong features are presented. Sharply tuned neurons can coexist with unselective ones, and the distribution of synaptic weights can be unimodal or bimodal. The formulation of synaptic dynamics through an optimality criterion provides a simple graphical argument for the stability of synapses, necessary for synaptic memory.

Abstract Using patch clamp recordings in acutely isolated brain slices allows to investigate molecular processes that are involved in long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) at the level of a single postsynaptic neuron. Via the pipette solution in the recording pipette, it is possible to apply inhibitors of signaling cascades selectively into the postsynaptic neuron to unravel the molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. In recent years, LTP research has been increasingly focused on induction protocols for LTP and LTD that rely on a minimal number of repeated synaptic stimulations at low frequency to induce synaptic plasticity. This is where spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) comes into play. STDP can be induced by repetitive pairings of action potential firing in presynaptic (first neuron) – and postsynaptic (second synaptically connected) neurons, that occurs with a delay of roughly 5–20 ms in forward or backward manner. While forward pairing with short positive time delays (“pre before post”) leads to LTP, backward pairing (“post before pre”) leads to LTD. In addition to the exact sequence and timing of pre- and postsynaptic spiking, the presence of neuromodulatory transmitters in the extracellular space (e. g., dopamine, acetylcholine, noradrenaline) and the synaptic release of intercellular mediators of synaptic plasticity (e. g., BDNF, endocannabinoids) critically regulate the outcome of STDP protocols. In this review we focus on the role of these mediators and modulators of synaptic plasticity in STDP.

Most central nervous system neurons receive synaptic input from hundreds or thousands of other neurons, and the computational function of such neurons results from the interactions of inputs on a large and complex scale. In most situations that have yielded to a partial analysis, the synaptic inputs to a neuron are not alike in function, but rather belong to distinct categories that differ qualitatively in the nature of their effect on the postsynaptic cell, and quantitatively in the strength of their influence. Many factors have been demonstrated to contribute to synaptic function, but one of the simplest and best known of these is the geometry of the postsynaptic neuron. The fundamental nature of the relationship between neuronal shape and synaptic effectiveness was established on theoretical grounds prior to its experimental verification.


This research article focuses on the theme of violence and its representation by the characters of the novel “This Savage Song” by Victoria Schwab. How violence is transmitted through genes to next generations and to what extent socio- psycho factors are involved in it, has also been discussed. Similarly, in what manner violent events and deeds by the parents affect the psychology of children and how it inculcates aggressive behaviour in their minds has been studied. What role is played by the parents in grooming the personality of children and ultimately their decisions to choose the right or wrong way has been argued. In the light of the theory of Judith Harris, this research paper highlights all the phenomena involved: How the social hierarchy controls the behaviour. In addition, the aggressive approach of the people in their lives has been analyzed in the light of the study of second theorist Thomas W Blume. As the novel is a unique representation of supernatural characters, the monsters, which are the products of some cruel deeds, this research paper brings out different dimensions of human sufferings with respect to these supernatural beings. Moreover, the researcher also discusses that, in what manner the curse of violence creates an inevitable vicious cycle of cruel monsters that makes the life of the characters turbulent and miserable.

Hospitals are the major contributor to environmental corruption and the biggest drain onenergy in their life cycle because they are complex, multifunctional giant facilities. Several recent studieshave been carried out to find the most suitable solutions to reduce energy consumption provide it on-siteand contribute to supporting economic, environmental and social aspects. The reason for the slowmovement of green buildings for hospitals is to focus on a suitable design for the complex function thatdeals with the local climate, natural resources, economy and cultural values and avoid the one-size-fits alldesign. This made the solutions used multiple and varied, different for greening of the hospital and put theresearch in the absence of a clear perception of the mechanisms of the application of green architecture inhospitals and this identified the problem of research. Therefore, the study looked at an analytical study ofexisting project models designed according to the strategies and standards of green architecture todetermine the strategies adopted in each project, and by adopting the analytical method after determiningthe strategy used in each building to achieve the green architecture and then comparing them according tothe standards adopted using the global LEED system Green Building Council. The results that will bereached are the mechanisms of applying Green Architecture to Hospitals.
