Abstract The nonlinear dynamics of self-organising bubble departures from twin nozzles in engine oils was analysed. Air bubbles were generated from twin brass nozzles with an inner diameter equal to 1 mm. The flow of bubbles in bubble chains was recorded using high-speed camera. The time series of air pressure oscillations and signal from laser–phototransistor identifying the presence of bubbles over the nozzles outlet were recorded simultaneously. The self-organising bubble departures were observed and their stability was analysed. It was found that self-organising bubble departures become unstable because of successive (during subsequent bubble departures) decrease of the mean air pressure in one of the nozzle air supply system. It was shown that instability of self-organising bubble departures leads to equalization of pressures in both nozzles air supply systems which causes that simultaneous bubble departures appear. In the present experiment, this process was repeated in a cyclic and chaotic way. It was shown that stable self-organising bubble departures are accompanied by periodic air pressure oscillations in one of the nozzles and chaotic air pressure oscillations in the second one.

The bubble departures from two neighbouring brass nozzles (with inner diameter of 1.1 mm) in three liquids: distilled water, mineral and synthetic engine oils were investigated. The numerical simulations were used for reconstruction of liquid flow around the departing bubbles. Bubble movements in liquid have been recorded using a high speed camera. The 2D bubble paths have been reconstructed using: Laplacian of Gaussian filters, algorithm of detection of local extremes of image brightness and Kalman filter. It was shown that during alternative bubble departures bubble paths become repeatable. The dimensionless number (similar to Strouhal number) was proposed to describe oscillating liquid flow generated by departing bubbles over the nozzle outlet. Such number was used for defining the hydrodynamic criterion of alternative bubble departures.

Four image-based techniques—i.e., shadowgraphic image method (SIM), high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV), bubble tracking method (BTM), and bubble image velocimetry (BIV)—are employed to investigate an aerator flow on a chute with a 17° inclination angle. The study focuses on their applications to the following issues: (1) to explore the characteristic positions of three water–air interfaces; (2) to interpret the evolution process of air bubbles shed from the wedged tip of the air cavity; (3) to identify the probabilistic means for characteristic positions near the fluctuating free surface; (4) to explore the probability distribution of intermittent appearance of air bubbles in the flow; (5) to obtain the mean streamwise and transverse velocity distributions of the water stream; (6) to acquire velocity fields, both instantaneous and mean, of air bubbles; (7) to construct a two-phase mean velocity field of both water flow and air-bubbles; and (8) to correlate the relationship among the probability distribution of air bubbles, the mean streamwise and transverse velocity profiles of air bubbles, and water stream. The combination of these techniques contributes to a better understanding of two-phase flow characteristics of the chute aerator.

Multifractal properties of large bubble paths in a single bubble columnIn the paper the paths of bubbles emitted from the brass nozzle with inner diameter equal to 1.6 mm have been analyzed. The mean frequency of bubble departure was in the range from 2 to 65.1 Hz. Bubble paths have been recorded using a high speed camera. The image analysis technique has been used to obtain the bubble paths for different mean frequencies of bubble departures. The multifractal analysis (WTMM - wavelet transform modulus maxima methodology) has been used to investigate the properties of bubble paths. It has been shown that bubble paths are the multifractals and the influence of previously departing bubbles on bubble trajectory is significant for bubble departure frequencyfb> 30 Hz.

Abstract In the recent paper, non-linear methods of data analysis were used to study bubble departure synchronisation. In the experiment, bubbles were generated in engine oils from two neighbouring brass nozzles (with an inner diameter of 1 mm). During the experiment, the time series of air pressure oscillations in the air supply system and voltage changes on phototransistor were recorded. The analysis of bubble departure synchronisation was performed using a correlation coefficient. The following methods of non-linear data analysis are considered. Fast Fourier Transformation, autocorrelation, attractor reconstruction, correlation dimension, largest Lyapunov exponent and recurrence plot analysis were used to examine the correlation between bubbles behaviour and character of pressure fluctuations. Non-linear analysis of bubble departure synchronisation revealed that the way of bubble departures from two neighbouring nozzles does not depend simply on the character of pressure fluctuations in the nozzle air supply systems. The chaotic changes of the air pressure oscillations do not always determine the chaotic bubble departures.

High speed cinefluorography was used to track articulatory movements preceding and following full-mouth tooth extraction and alveoloplasty in two subjects. Films also were made of a control subject on two separate days. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of dramatically altering the structural dimensions of the oral cavity on the kinematic parameters of speech. The results showed that the experimental subjects performed differently pre and postoperatively though the changes were in different directions for the two subjects. Differences in both means and variabilities of kinematic parameters were larger between days for the experimental (operated) subjects than for the control subject. The results for the Control subject also showed significant differences in the mean values of kinematic variables between days though these day-to-day differences could not account for the effects found pre- and postoperatively. The results of the kinematic analysis, particularly the finding that transition time was most stable over the experimental conditions for the operated subjects, are used to speculate about the coordination of normal speech.

Abstract. High-speed railways are fast-growing and promising type of traffic. In Russia development of high-speed railway service is associated with the solution of a number of problems, including infrastructure. Authors propose to use earth connection of the railway catenary with the help of an artificial earthing switch on currently designed high-speed line Moscow—Kazan for 2×25 kV power supply system. Taking into account requirements for electrical safety conditions for maintenance of the track and earthed catenary supports, paper justifies method for calculating allowable voltages of rail—earth points and supports of catenary. Methods takes into account structural features of ballastless track superstructure used for high-speed lines. It is estimated that the voltages admissible under the electrical safety conditions are random in nature and distributed logarithmically normal. When calculating probability of safe operation, one should take into account random nature of both permissible stresses and those actually occurring on the track. It is estimated that the probability of safe operation in traction networks of sections with ballastless track superstructure does not exceed a similar value in electrified sections with the conventional structure of a ballast prism. Feasibility of using a 2×25 kV earth system using an artificial earth connection is confirmed, recommendations on its use are given. Authors substantiate allowable values of the rail—earth voltage and catenary supports, which practically exclude the occurrence of hazardous situations for personnel maintaining the track in sections with ballastless track superstructure.

Abstract. A sun-weather correlation, namely the link between solar magnetic sector boundary passage (SBP) by the Earth and upper-level tropospheric vorticity area index (VAI), that was found by Wilcox et al. (1974) and shown to be statistically significant by Hines and Halevy (1977) is revisited. A minimum in the VAI one day after SBP followed by an increase a few days later was observed. Using the ECMWF ERA-40 re-analysis dataset for the original period from 1963 to 1973 and extending it to 2002, we have verified what has become known as the "Wilcox effect" for the Northern as well as the Southern Hemisphere winters. The effect persists through years of high and low volcanic aerosol loading except for the Northern Hemisphere at 500 mb, when the VAI minimum is weak during the low aerosol years after 1973, particularly for sector boundaries associated with south-to-north reversals of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) BZ component. The "disappearance" of the Wilcox effect was found previously by Tinsley et al. (1994) who suggested that enhanced stratospheric volcanic aerosols and changes in air-earth current density are necessary conditions for the effect. The present results indicate that the Wilcox effect does not require high aerosol loading to be detected. The results are corroborated by a correlation with coronal holes where the fast solar wind originates. Ground-based measurements of the green coronal emission line (Fe XIV, 530.3 nm) are used in the superposed epoch analysis keyed by the times of sector boundary passage to show a one-to-one correspondence between the mean VAI variations and coronal holes. The VAI is modulated by high-speed solar wind streams with a delay of 1–2 days. The Fourier spectra of VAI time series show peaks at periods similar to those found in the solar corona and solar wind time series. In the modulation of VAI by solar wind the IMF BZ seems to control the phase of the Wilcox effect and the depth of the VAI minimum. The mean VAI response to SBP associated with the north-to-south reversal of BZ is leading by up to 2 days the mean VAI response to SBP associated with the south-to-north reversal of BZ. For the latter, less geoeffective events, the VAI minimum deepens (with the above exception of the Northern Hemisphere low-aerosol 500-mb VAI) and the VAI maximum is delayed. The phase shift between the mean VAI responses obtained for these two subsets of SBP events may explain the reduced amplitude of the overall Wilcox effect. In a companion paper, Prikryl et al. (2009) propose a new mechanism to explain the Wilcox effect, namely that solar-wind-generated auroral atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) influence the growth of extratropical cyclones. It is also observed that severe extratropical storms, explosive cyclogenesis and significant sea level pressure deepenings of extratropical storms tend to occur within a few days of the arrival of high-speed solar wind. These observations are discussed in the context of the proposed AGW mechanism as well as the previously suggested atmospheric electrical current (AEC) model (Tinsley et al., 1994), which requires the presence of stratospheric aerosols for a significant (Wilcox) effect.

Microscopic multiphase flows have gained broad interest due to their capability to transfer processes into new operational windows and achieving significant process intensification. However, the hydrodynamic behavior of Taylor droplets is not yet entirely understood. In this work, we introduce a model to determine the excess velocity of Taylor droplets in square microchannels. This velocity difference between the droplet and the total superficial velocity of the flow has a direct influence on the droplet residence time and is linked to the pressure drop. Since the droplet does not occupy the entire channel cross-section, it enables the continuous phase to bypass the droplet through the corners. A consideration of the continuity equation generally relates the excess velocity to the mean flow velocity. We base the quantification of the bypass flow on a correlation for the droplet cap deformation from its static shape. The cap deformation reveals the forces of the flowing liquids exerted onto the interface and allows estimating the local driving pressure gradient for the bypass flow. The characterizing parameters are identified as the bypass length, the wall film thickness, the viscosity ratio between both phases and the C a number. The proposed model is adapted with a stochastic, metaheuristic optimization approach based on genetic algorithms. In addition, our model was successfully verified with high-speed camera measurements and published empirical data.

Based on the characteristics that the tunnel pressure wave has a fixed-morphologic form when the same train passes through the same tunnel, an applicational approach based on the iterative learning control (ILC) is developed, aiming at overcoming the drawbacks of the traditional strategy for controlling the air pressure variation inside a high-speed train carriage. To achieve the goal, the control system is mathematically modelled. Then, the problem is formulated. The task of suppressing the influence of the tunnel pressure wave on the air pressure inside the carriages is shifted as an ILC problem of tracking the comfort index with varying trial length. The algorithm of refreshing the control signal from trial to trial is determined and the process of ILC control is designed. Next, the convergence of the newly-developed applicational ILC algorithm is discussed and the algorithm is simulated by the simulation signal and field-test signal. Results show that the applicational ILC algorithm be more adaptable in handling the control of the air pressure inside carriage under the excitation of varying-amplitude, varying-scale and varying-initial-states tunnel pressure wave. Meanwhile, the matching with tunnel pressure wave makes the applicational ILC algorithm will take both the riding comfort and fresh air into consideration, which upgrades the performances when the high-speed train passing through long tunnels.
