Carbon monoxide was one of the indicators of air pollution that most often comes from motor vehicles. Indirectly, increasing the number of motorcycles would be followed by an increase in the number of workshops that provide maintenance services. The process of maintenance and repair in the workshop causes carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the air to be higher from the standard so it was easily inhaled by workers and the internal mechanism reacts became carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO). This study aims to analyze the effect of CO levels in the workshop air and smoking habits of workers on HbCO levels in the blood of workshop mechanic workers. This research was an observational analytic study with 18 respondents as workshop mechanic workers who were male. Respondents in this study were identified based on age, years of service, length of work, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and nutritional status. The results showed that most respondents aged 25-36 years -old (38,9%), had a year of service ≥ 5 years (55,6%), had smoking habits (72,2%), did not use PPE (88,9%) and had a normal nutritional status (47,2%). CO levels in the air had a significant correlation on HbCO levels (p <0,000) as well as smoking habits also had a significant correlation on HbCO levels (p <0,000). It was recommended for workers to reduce smoking habits, improved healthy lifestyles, and used masks to reduce exposure to pollutants.

The aim of this multicenter cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of peri-implantitis and to assess its association with several patient- and implant-related factors. Patients with at least one implant, who came for a recall visit to one of the four centers over a period of five months, were enrolled. Presence of peri-implantitis (defined as bleeding on probing, exudate/suppuration, bone loss > 0.2 mm/year and increased pocket depth) and several other variables (e.g., smoking habits, history of periodontitis, diabetes) were recorded. Out of 248 enrolled patients (1162 implants), 10 patients had at least one implant with peri-implantitis (4.03%); a total of 14 implants were affected (1.20%). A statistically significant association between peri-implantitis and diabetes was found (OR 8.65; CI: 1.94–38.57). Smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day (OR: 0.53; CI 0.03–9.45) and history of periodontitis (OR: 2.42; CI: 0.49–11.89) were not found to be statistically associated with peri-implantitis. Even if implant therapy is a consolidated treatment, biological complications do happen. Strict supportive therapy recalls could lead to lower rates of peri-implantitis and earlier diagnosis.

Kata Kunci: hipertensi, kebiasaan merokok, lama merokok, jumlah rokok, jenis rokok AbstractHypertension is one of the major causes of death in the world. This disease is called silent killer. The prevalence of hypertension has reached 31.7% of the population. It increases because of lifestyle changes, one of them is smoking. The objective of this study was to determine the association between smoking habits including duration of smoking, number of cigarettes, and type of cigarettes with hypertension. The research design was cross-sectional study. The population was 35-65 years old men in four selected districts in Padang. There were 92 subjects who were taken by multi-stage random sampling. The instruments of this research were questionnaire for data of respondents and smoking habit characteristics, also sphygmomanometer for blood pressure measurements. Data were analyzed by chi-square test with p value < 0.05 for significance. The result of this study showed that there is association between smoking habit and hypertension (p=0.003) which is influenced by duration of smoking (p=0.017) and type of smoking (p=0.017), but there is no association between number of cigarettes with the incidence of hypertension (p=0.412). As smoking habits increase the risk of hypertension, health promotion about the risk of blood pressure increasing in the patient who has a smoking habit should be done. It is important in order to decrease the incidence of hypertension. Keywords: hypertension, duration of smoking, number of cigarettes, type of cigarettes

Background: There is a paucity of data on the prevalence of smoking among physicians. As physicians are on the front line caring for patients’ health, a detailed analysis of their smoking habits and its impact on counseling their patients to quit is warranted. So far, no study in Lebanon has addressed the real prevalence of physicians smoking and its impact on promoting cessation. This study aims to fill this purpose. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted using a web-based self-administered questionnaire was e-mailed to 4037 Lebanese physicians between November 2015 and February 2016. The questionnaire included 11 questions about basic sociodemographic information (age, gender, work province, specialty), smoking habits and attitude towards smoking cessation. SPSS was used for analysis. The main outcome was to calculate the percentage of physicians that smoke,  its relationship to gender and age, and its impact on counseling their patients about smoking cessation. Results: 529 responders were analyzed (13.1% response rate). A high rate of physician ever-smokers was noted at 37% (n=195) whereas the prevalence of current smokers was 13% (n=70).. In addition, there was a difference in the gender of ever-smoking physicians where 47% of males were smokers compared to 20% of females only. Regarding the prevalence of smoking within different specialties, it was noted that 35% (n=74) of internal medicine physicians were ever-smokers compared to approximately 50% (n=51/102) of surgeons. There was a statistically significant difference between former-smokers and current-smokers in regards to how frequently they urge their patients to quit smoking. Conclusion: The high prevalence of smoking among Lebanese physicians is depicted and its negative impact on counseling patients to quit is a serious consequence. This is a major drawback in the fight against tobacco and further awareness may be needed among our future doctors to increase smoking cessation counseling and decrease the burden of smoking in Lebanon and worldwide.
