AbstractDuring their last phase of evolution, the pectiniform conodont elements manifested an evident trend of simplification and miniaturization. This phase started from the late Norian (Sevatian) in the Late Triassic and the evolutionary process of genus Mockina to Parvigondolella, in particular between Mockina bidentata and Parvigondolella andrusovi, is one of the most significant examples. Parvigondolella has been reported worldwide since it was first described in the early 1970s. However, it has recently been suggested that genus Parvigondolella is an ecostratigraphic morphotype of genus Mockina, and thus a phenotype controlled by the environmental conditions, and not an independent taxon. In the Pizzo Mondello Section (Sicily, Italy), transitional forms between M. bidentata and P. andrusovi have been found at different evolutionary stages. We have investigated the oceanic conditions at the time by using redox-sensitive elements (Mn, Fe, V, Cr, and Ni) and seawater temperatures from biogenetic δ18Ophos to understand the possible environmental influences on the phylogenetic evolution between Mockina and Parvigondolella. The geochemical and isotope analyses indicate that the redox condition and temperature were stable during the evolution of genus Parvigondolella in Pizzo Mondello, confirming that genus Parvigondolella is a real taxon and not a phenotype. A new conodont species named Parvigondolella ciarapicae n. sp. is described here for the first time.

Cyanobacteria are organisms which play a vital role in various molecular and biotechnological aspects in food industry, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals, biofuel production, etc., it is necessary to understand its adaptability to various environmental conditions. Furthermore it is equally important to discover new cyanobacterial taxa and with it occasional changes in taxonomic classification, thus the author set out to study cyanobacteria in extreme climatic conditions of desert, where temperatures are mostly above 45 oC. The taxonomic composition of cyanobacteria of Masirah Island, Sultanate of Oman, was studied for the first time. The studied samples were collected during the period of 2017–2019. The ten samples belonged to two orders: Oscillatoriales Schaffner and Synechococcales L.Hoffmann, Komárek & J.Kastovsky. All of them were filamentous non-heterocyst forms. Three species belonged to the genus Leptolyngbya Anagn. & Komárek, the genera Oscillatoria Vaucher ex Gomont and Lyngbya C.Agardh ex Gomont were represented by two species each, while the genera Pseudanabena Lauterborn, Planktolyngbya Anagn. & Komárek and Geitlerinema (Anagn. & Komárek) Anagn. were one species.

The study areas of anthropology have been growing day by day. Therefore, it has concerned with various parts of society such as sanitation, water supply, poverty, traditional practice, folk music, tourism etc as multidisciplinary areas. In fact, anthropology and tourism are co-evolutionary process in the path of their developments because they help each other in many ways. Traditionally, tourism and tourist are major anthropological sources of information to analyse the situation of then and present society and culture. Similarly, tourist can enjoy visiting any places by learning anthropological knowledge and findings. Methodologically, this is based on field observation, interview and other secondary sources to analyse the scenario. After the introduction of democracy in Nepal, she has been opened to outsiders. As a result, Sir Edmund Hillary as foreigner visited Nepal. Hillary with Tenzing Norgy Sherpa successfully climbed the Mount Everest in 29 May, 1953 at the first time. Then the glorious name of Nepal has become famous in the world. The tourism industries have been initiated from Thamel, Solukhumbo, Pokhara and then gradually extended in other parts of the country. Tourism at present period has popular pursuit in several parts of Nepal involving from hotel, lodge, guide, restaurant, expedition to home stay and other businesses. Lamjung has own identity in tourism perspective. The Ghalegaun is famous in SAARC level as model program for the home stay concept. From perennial snow peaks, biodiversity to natural forest of rhododendron in mountain to hill parts in the north and plain narrow valley in the south to develop cultural lives can be observed there. Lamjung has been enriched in different culture, fest and festivals. Paudure dance among the Kumal, bees hunting in steep slope rocky hills to Rodi in the Gurung have their own identity popular in the district.

For the first time in Sri Lanka, an attempt was made to measure the outdoor radon levels using CR 39 type passive radon detectors. Preliminary results indicate that in Sri Lanka, 220Rn isotope is more abundance than 222Rn isotope. These results were also confirmed by in-situ measurements. Sri Lanka has one of the highest 220Rn values in the region. It was also noted that environmental conditions and other physical factors have a significant effect on the outdoor radon measurements using passive discriminative detectors.

Two xanthophyll cycles are present in higher plants: the ubiquitous violaxanthin (V) cycle and the taxonomically restricted lutein epoxide (Lx) cycle. Conversions of V to zeaxanthin (Z) in the first and Lx to lutein (L) in the second happen in parallel under illumination. Unlike the V cycle, in which full epoxidation is completed overnight, in the Lx cycle, this reaction has been described as irreversible on a daily basis in most species (the ‘truncated’ Lx cycle). However, there are some species that display complete restoration of Lx overnight (‘true’ Lx cycle). So far, little is known about the physiological meaning of these two versions of the Lx cycle. Therefore, in the present work, the ‘true’ Lx cycle operation was studied in seedlings of Ocotea foetens (Aiton) Benth. under controlled and field conditions. Complete overnight recovery of the Lx pool in the presence of norfluorazon suggested that the inter-conversions between Lx and L represent a true cycle in this species. Furthermore, Lx responded dynamically to environmental conditions during long-term acclimation. Our data demonstrate the operation of a ‘true’ Lx cycle and, for the first time, its potential involvement in the regulation of non-photochemical quenching in situ. We propose dual regulation of Lx cycle in O. foetens, in which the extent of Lx restoration depends on the intensity and duration of illumination.

Measurement of electrical resistance of textile materials, fiber and fabrics included, remains always an engaging task due to sensitivities to interference of multiple factors. Difficulty stands on both finding a method of measurements that fits the requirements of samples to be tested and the most appropriate indicator describing this property. Numerous methods and indicators are used for different sample content and shape (fibers, roving, yarn or fabric, etc.), even when the material tested is the same. Different methods usually use indicators that produce results difficult to compare or to interpret, or do not express intrinsic qualities of their constituent materials. The situation is the same for leather materials. In this paper, we propose a new method, multiple steps method, and a new indicator, electrical resistivity, which takes into consideration compressional properties of leather sample and produce results independent from the amount and form of the sample. Electrical resistivity of conductive leather, as defined below, is shown to be an inherent indicator of bulk conductivity of leather assembly and is not influenced by sample form or the way it is placed within the measuring cell. The method is used for the first time to evaluate changes in electrical resistivity of leather after various chemical processes to make it electro-conductive. The data provide important information about the evolution of electro-conductive properties of leather at different stages of processing, as well as the influence of environmental conditions.

<p><span lang="EN-US"><span>The northwestern Sichuan region experienced the evolutionary process of a marine Craton basin in the Sinian-Middle Triassic and a continental basin in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. Several regional tectonic activities cause the complicated stratigraphic distribution and structural deformations in deep layers. During key tectonic periods, the characteristic sedimentary and deformation structures were formed, including the platform margin of Dengying formation, the western palaeohigh at the end of Silurian, and the passive continental margin of late Paleozoic-middle Triassic. The Meso-Cenozoic intra-continental compressional tectonic processes since the late Triassic controlled the formation of complex thrusting structures surrounding and inside the basin. The northern Longmenshan fold-thrust belt has footwall in-situ thrust structures, controlled by two sets of detachments in the Lower Triassic and the Lower Cambrian, presenting a multi-level deformation structure with shallow folds, the middle thin-skin thrusts and the deeper basement-involved folds. From the perspective of structural geology, the Dengying formation of the Upper Sinian is mainly distributed in the eastern and northern areas of the northwest Sichuan basin where the Jiulongshan fold is the favorable exploration belts. Using the three-dimensional seismic reflection data, we recognize the structural characteristics of the platform margin of Dengying formation. Meanwhile, we apply new methods of two-dimensional and structural restoration based on mechanical constrains to gain insights into the development of the Jiulongshan anticline which forms the trap for the Jiulongshan field. The result of structural restoration indicates that, the formation of the Jiulongshan anticline is controlled by two-stage contractional thrusts. In the early days, there was no significant relief in Jiulongshan area, and the southwestern top of the Sinian Dengying formation was the paleo-high. The anticline was gradually formed in the Late Jurassic-the Early Cretaceous, presenting an approximately E-W strike structure. This structure was transformed by the N-E contractional stress to become an anticline in NE-SW direction.</span></span></p> <p> </p>

AbstractA multivariate analysis of genetic and environmental influences on longitudinal height and weight data from a Swedish twin sample is presented. For height in boys, genetic correlations of all ages with the first time point decrease during puberty and increase afterwards. A more linear pattern is evident for the girls. For weight in boys, genetic and environmental correlations are similar to the ones for height. Genetic correlations for girls are stable with age, while environmental correlations peak at 13.5 years and decrease drastically thereafter. The patterns for height and weight in boys suggest that a new set of genes may be turned on during puberty and turned off again afterwards. The pattern found for weight in girls indicates that a simple additive genetic model is not appropriate. It is necessary, however, to apply the model to actual data from several time points to recognize the inadequacy of the model.

Hydroids in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, were studied on five hard-bottom transects along gradients of environmental conditions from the glacier at the fjord's head to the fjord's mouth at depth-range 0–30 m. Hydrozoa colonies are widely distributed on rock and gravel substrata in Kongsfjorden. In general, however, hydroids are not dominant or subdominant in zoobenthic communities. The exception isSymplectoscyphus tricuspidatusvar.acuminatus, colonies of which were sometimes abundant enough to determine the community structure and characteristics of benthic diversity. Of the 23 species recorded in this study,Laomedea flexuosa,Phialella quadrataandHalecium tenellumas well as representatives of family Stylasteridae were recorded from Svalbard waters for the first time. Hydroid diversity was highest in the zoobenthic community structured by branched bryozoans. The abundance and distribution of hydroids were reduced, to some extent, in the inner part of the fjord compared to the outer fjord. Species richness of hydroids was high at shallow depths, decreased at around 15 m and then increased again to 30 m depth. Species with Low-boreal–Arctic and Panoceanic distributional ranges were the most frequently occurring species. Depth, type of background substratum and amount of silt on its surface were the main factors influencing hydroid distribution. Description of all recorded taxa distributions together with data on their habitat and associations in zoobenthic communities are presented in an Appendix.

Abstract The cliff in Ustka is an active one. The area is one of the most eroded sea shores of the Polish coast. The Ustka Cliff mainly consists of Holocene sandy deposits, but its basis is built of glacial till and clay. Field search allowed to recognize the structure and sedimentary conditions of Holocene deposits exposed in the cliff. A comparison of dating results obtained for fossil soils and peat as well as aeolian deposits, using 14C and TL methods, respectively, with available literature records is presented. The evaluation of results obtained allowed to define three main dune-forming phases for the first time for this part of the Polish coast. During the research studies new data on the processes and environmental conditions was gained and the development of structure of the area during the last 10 thousand years was reconstructed. The analysis of available data from other sections of the southern Baltic coast shows that results obtained are age similar to those determined for the Łeba Spit. The research is part of a project concerning the geomorphology of the Ustka Bay.
