Abstract Purpose Norway spruce log soaking water (SLSW) is considered a waste in the plywood and veneer industry but has not been characterised, and its possible uses remain unexplored. The purpose of this study is to characterise and test the possibility of using SLSW in wood preservative formulations. Methods First, the SLSW was characterised, and the presence of carbohydrates in the log soaking water was reduced with a hydrophobic adsorbent to reduce the nutrient availability for fungi in the liquids. Then, the feasibility of using SLSW and the sugar free SLSW (denoted later as EHC solution) as wood preservatives was studied by testing their antifungal and antioxidant activities and performing a mini-block test against Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor, Fibroporia vaillantii and Gloeophyllum trabeum. Results Several phenolic compounds were found in the SLSW. This water also had high antioxidant activity at 1000 mg/L before and after carbohydrate removal but no antifungal activity. Its impregnation in wood caused a slight reduction in mass loss of the Pinus sylvestris specimens but had no effect on the Fagus sylvatica specimens when exposed against Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor, Fibroporia vaillantii and Gloeophyllum trabeum. Conclusion The SLSW as a wood preservative is invalid, even after partial carbohydrate removal. However, due to the presence of wood constituents, SLSW could be a resource for other uses requiring high antioxidant activity but specific applications need further investigation. A study in vitro on the antioxidant activity of Portulaca oleracea L. was carried out by HPLC-ESR Spin-trapping System. HPLCESR analysis is performed on monitoring ESR signal intensity of radicals adduct of 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO/O2). The ESR signal which is recorded from the Portulaca oleracea L. extracts in aqueous buffer by HPLC-ESR system showed that the high antioxidant activity of the extracts reduce the concentration of DMPO/O2 signal to 80 % and the absorbance of reactive oxygen species from 0.08 to 0.06. The ground powder and the extract of Portulaca oleracea were in vivo performed on GMRGAL4/ UAS-hDuox2 flies containing hDuox2 protein which induced high oxidative stress and expressed rough-eye phenotype. Antioxidant activities of Portulaca oleracea were evaluated by comparing the rough-eye area before and after the experiment. At the concentration of 20 %, the ground powder and the extracts induced antioxidant activities to 81.72 % and 87.33 %, respectively. The result showed that both the ground powder and the extracts had antioxidant activities which reduced symptoms of rough-eye phenotypes. In conclusion, the in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that both ground power and aqueous extract of leaves of Portulaca oleracea possess effective antioxidative abilities.

In this work, the antioxidant properties of the series of 10 aminothiazol hydroxyl coumarin derivatives have been investigated with DFT/B3LYP method. For these antioxidants all reaction enthalpies related to HAT, SPLET, SET-PT mechanisms were calculated in the gas phase and polar solvents. Based on calculated reaction enthalpies (BDE, IP and PA values) the derivations 2, 3 and 4 have the highest antioxidant activity among the studied compounds. Calculated results show that derivations 7, 5 and 6 have the lowest antioxidant activity. The observed theoretical trends for antioxidant activities of studied compounds were similar to trends of previous experimental studies that OH50, TAC50, IC50, CE50 values have been used as a benchmark for measuring the antioxidant properties of these compounds. These results can be useful in synthesis of novel aminothiazol hydroxycoumarin derivatives with high antioxidant activity. Calculated results show that BDE, PA and IP values of studied derivations have linear dependence with structure parameters such as R( O – H ), q( O ) and E HOMO . These observed linear dependences can be useful in synthesis of novel aminothiazol hydroxyl coumarin derivatives with high antioxidant activity. For studied compounds, results indicated that the SPLET and HAT mechanisms represent the thermodynamically preferred mechanism both, in solvent and the gas phase.

In order to screen theCatalpaplant with high antioxidant activity and confirm the corresponding active fractions fromCatalpa ovataG. Don,C. fargesiiBur., andC. bungeiC. A. Mey., total flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of the extracts/fractions ofCatalpaplant leaves were determined. The determined total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity were used as assessment criteria. Those compounds with antioxidant activity were isolated with silica gel column chromatography and ODS column chromatography. Our results showed that the total flavonoid content inC. bungeiC. A. Mey. (30.07 mg/g·DW) was the highest, followed by those inC. fargesiiBur. (25.55 mg/g·DW) andC. ovataG. Don (24.96 mg/g·DW). According to the determination results of total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in 3 clones of leaves ofC. bungeiC. A. Mey., the total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in crude extracts fromC. bungeiC. A. Mey. 6 (CA6) leaves were the highest. Moreover, the results showed that the total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate (EA) fraction in ethanol crude extracts in CA6 leaves were the highest, followed byn-butanol, petroleum ether (PE), and water fractions. Two flavonoid compounds with antioxidant activity were firstly isolated based on EA fraction. The two compounds were luteolin (1) and apigenin (2), respectively.

A hydromethanolic root extract of Ampelocissus martinii Planch. (A. martinii) was analyzed by standard methods for its phytochemical content, antioxidant activity, α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitions and antibacterial activities. The root extract exhibited the highest content of saponins, followed by phenols, proanthocyanidin and flavonoids, respectively. It showed high antioxidant activity in FRAP and CUPRAC assays. The root extract and standard Trolox had similar antioxidant activities in the DPPH and ABTS assay. It also showed much higher α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity compared to standard acarbose. Moreover, the root extract inhibited all tested Gram-positive bacteria with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 6.25 mg/mL. These results indicate that A. martinii root can be pharmaceutically used as active ingredients to prevent bacterial infection and radical-related diseases especially diabetes.

The herbal plant known as Tinospora crispa is reported to have many beneficial effects on health and has great potential in future to be developed as a health product either in the form of traditional medicine, food supplements or in pharmaceutical preparations. However, so far knowledge on processing procedures to produce quality standardized extracts of this plant to be used in product development has still not widely reported. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the optimal extraction conditions for producing a standardized T. crispa aqueos extract (STCAE) with high extraction yield and high syringin content. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of various extraction conditions involving temperature (25–100 ° C), extraction time (0.5–6 hours) and liquid (water) to solid ratio (5: 1–25: 1 ml of solvent per g stem dry). Using optimized conditions obtained, the extract was standardized based on syringin and was further investigated on its antioxidant activity through DPPH, FRAP and TBA bioassays. Results revealed that the optimum extraction conditions were found to be 1 h extraction time and 15:1 ml g−1 liquid-to-solid ratio. For the extraction temperature, 60°C was found to be the best. STCAE was produced on the basis of the extract to contain with at least 0.4 wt% of syringin. STCAE was found to possess high antioxidant activities through DPPH, FRAP and TBA bioassays.

This study aims at investigating the antioxidant activity and repair effect of green tea polysaccharide (TPS) with different molecular weights (Mw) on damaged human kidney proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). Scavenging activities on hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and ABTS radical and reducing power of four kinds of TPS with Mw of 10.88 (TPS0), 8.16 (TPS1), 4.82 (TPS2), and 2.31 kDa (TPS3) were detected. A damaged cell model was established using 2.6 mmol/L oxalate to injure HK-2 cells. Then, different concentrations of TPSs were used to repair the damaged cells. Index changes of subcellular organelles of HK-2 cells were detected before and after repair. The four kinds of TPSs possessed radical scavenging activity and reducing power, wherein TPS2 with moderate Mw presented the strongest antioxidant activity. After repair by TPSs, cell morphology of damaged HK-2 cells was gradually restored to normal conditions. Reactive oxygen species production decreased, and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) of repaired cells increased. Cells of G1 phase arrest were inhibited, and cell proportion in the S phase increased. Lysosome integrity improved, and cell apoptotic rates significantly reduced in the repaired group. The four kinds of TPSs with varying Mw displayed antioxidant activity and repair effect on the mitochondria, lysosomes, and intracellular DNA. TPS2, with moderate Mw, showed the strongest antioxidant activity and repair effect; it may become a potential drug for prevention and treatment of kidney stones.

Samples of three types of honey: polyfloral (PH), linden (LH) and acacia (AH,) without and with addition of dried cherries (40%) were analyzed before and after three months of storage. The total phenol (TPh), flavonoid (TFd) and anthocyanin (TAn) contents, antioxidant activities and sensory properties of honeys with and without the addition of dry cherries were evaluated. TPh and TFd increased with addition of dried cherries to the honey, while enriched honeys showed high TAn. The LH sample with dried cherries showed the highest anthocyanins content (41.41mgCGE/100g). The antioxidant activity increased with addition of dried cherries in honey in the DPPH? test and reducing power. The PH and enriched PH exibited the best antiradical activity compared to LH and AH. The EC50 DPPH values were: 23.81 for PH and 24.19 mg/mL for PH, while the EC50 DPPH were: 1.16 mg/mL for PH40 and 1.18 mg/mL for PH40s. RP0.5 values were: 57.00 mg/mL for PH40 and 56.00 mg/ml for PH40s, while RP0.5 were: 15.05 mg/mL for PH40 and 15.18 mg/mL for PH40s. The statistical analysis showed that TPh, TFd and TAn, and antioxidant activity of honeys and enriched honeys showed significant correlation. Sensory analysis of honey with dried cherries, before and after storage, indicated very good sensory characteristics.

The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant properties of tow samples of bee pollen harvested from Algeria. The content of total polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity by the cyclic voltammetry method were determined. The contents of polyphenolic compounds was 22.68 mg/g for the pollen from Blida and 21,9 mg/g for Tipaza pollen. High antioxidant activities were found for the cyclic voltammetry method, with values that ranged from 22,3 to 27,63 mg of AAE·g–1 pollen. The bee pollen of Blida showed high antioxidant activity probably due to the high content of polyphenolic compounds present in pollen.

The antioxidant activity in vitro of methanol extract of Archidendron clypearia was evaluated by in vitro tests on isolated liver cells of mouses with ED50 value ​​ of 2.18 μg/mL compared to that of curcumin of 1.87 µg/mL. Using combined chromatographic methods, four compounds were isolated from chloroform extract of the Archidendron clypearia. Their structures were elucidated to be daucosterol, 1-octacosanol, docosenoic acid, and methyl gallate by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic methods and in comparison with those reported in the literature. This is the first report of these compounds from the plant. All four compounds showed quite high antioxidant activity, for which methyl gallate was the highest one.
