Abstract – This study aimed to determine self-esteem and resilience as the predictors of successful aging among the elderly in nursing homes. This study used quantitative approach, participated by 127 elderly participants who live in nursing homes located in five cities in Central Java (Salatiga, Semarang, Surakarta, Magelang, and Pekalongan) (Mage = 74.57; SD = 7.49). This study utilized The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (to measure the level of resilience) and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (to measure the self-esteem) which were translated into Indonesian language. Successful Aging Scale were based on the Rowe and Kahn’s theory (1987) of successful aging. The results indicated that there was a significant effect of self-esteem and resilience simultaneously (F = 10.975; p = .000) on successful aging, suggesting that self-esteem and resilience are predictors of successful aging. The results of this study could serve as a reference for the government and nursing home managements to improve successful aging of the elderly who live in nursing homes.

Basically, every elderly can achieve successful aging in his old age, depending on the number of factors influencing it, such as self-esteem factors. Successful aging will indirectly be influenced by these factors. Therefore, this research aims to find out if there is a relationship between self-esteem with successful aging in elderly. This type of research was taken using quantitative research methods with saturated sample models. The samples in this study amounted to 50 people aged 60-80 years. The results showed that the results of the correlation coefficient (r) =-0.064 with a Sig value of 0.329 p > 0.05. It can be concluded that there is no relationship between self-esteem and successful aging in elderly. Keywords: Self Esteem, successful aging, elderly

Abstract Research shows that self-esteem and well-being have strong correlations to cognitive abilities. People with high self-esteem, compared to those with a low self-esteem, tend to evaluate themselves as more favorable after both high and low performance. However, less research has been conducted on self confidence among the older population and how this can potentially negatively or positively influence the aging process. The purpose of the study was to see if there is an effect of age on cognitive function. The second aim was to see if there is an effect of cognitive function on self-esteem. The first hypothesis was that middle-aged adults would exhibit higher cognitive functioning than older adults. The second hypothesis was that those with lower cognition would exhibit lower self-esteem. A secondary analysis of data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) was performed on 60 randomly selected individuals from a total of 3,005 participants. A 2 x 2 chi square test revealed that the younger group (63%) compared to the older group (37%) were significantly more likely to exhibit perfect cognitive functions (versus not), χ² (1) = 4.27, p < .05. A One-Way ANOVA revealed no significant main effect of cognitive function on self-esteem, F(1, 58) = 2.97, p = .09. This suggests that cognitive functions are more likely to decline as one ages but cognitive function alone might not strongly influence self-esteem. Future research should aim to understand under what conditions confidence influences cognitive function to promote healthy interventions for successful aging.

ABSTRACTObjectives:Gender is an important social determinant of health, but gender has played only a marginal role in the geriatric and gerontology research and practice. The aim of this study was to examine the relevance of gender to the psychological well-being of older adults.Design:A cross-sectional study was conducted.Setting:The study was carried out in Spain.Participants:A total of 1,201 people aged between 65 and 94.Measurements:The participants completed sociodemographic data and four questionnaires: The Bem sex role inventory, the Ryff’s psychological well-being scale, the York self-esteem inventory, and the Social support scale. Results:Men scored higher than women in self-acceptance, autonomy, purpose in life, and environmental mastery. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that, although the most important predictors of psychological well-being in both women and men were self-esteem and social support, both masculine/instrumental and feminine/expressive traits were associated with higher psychological well-being, although the effect size was higher for the masculine/instrumental trait. Furthermore, education was associated with psychological well-being in the case of females. Conclusions:Gender plays an important role in the psychological well-being of older adults. The results of this research are relevant for healthcare providers and policy-makers interested in promoting successful aging and increasing the well-being of older people.

The purpose of our study was to examine two hypotheses: 1) that androgyny and Type B behavior are related to longevity; and 2) that personality characteristics associated with longevity may also be related to successful aging. Participants were eighty-two centenarians (37 men and 45 women) who were compared with 605 elderly in their sixties, seventies, and eighties. Both groups were living in the Tokyo metropolitan area. We used the Bem Sex Role Inventory and Bortner Pattern A Behavior Scales to measure personality, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Cattell Anxiety Scale to measure successful aging. We found that androgyny was not more prominent among centenarians than masculinity, femininity, or undifferentiated. In fact, more femininity was observed. Additionally, we found that more women were classified as feminine than were men. The results indicated more Type B's among centenarians than among those in their sixties and more women than men showed Type B behavior. Our hypothesis that Type B behavior is related to longevity was supported. We observed lower self-esteem for femininity than for either the masculinity or androgyny. We also observed that anxiety was lower for femininity than masculinity but higher than androgyny among women. Type B women showed lower self-esteem than Type A women. Type B men showed lower anxiety than Type A men. We conclude that femininity is related to longevity and that androgyny may be related to successful aging. Further, we suggest that Type B behavior is associated with longevity, but its relationship to successful aging differs between men and women.
