The socio-economic effect of 156 hand injuries was studied prospectively. The average cost per injury was IR£474. 28 of the more serious injuries utilized two-thirds of the resources and resulted in 83% of the days lost from work. In the working population approximately 50% of hand injuries occurred at work. In assessing the economic impact of hand injuries, labour costs account for 55 to 65% of costs. Amputation and complicated laceration were the most costly and resulted in more days lost at work. Injuries at work result in greater costs because they involve more serious injuries, and because workers requiring manual skills need a higher level of hand rehabilitation to return to work. Unless the labour costs are taken into account, the true impact of hand injuries is greatly underestimated.

The article addresses the issues of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) production in the Czech Republic (CR). Our analysis shows that the tree species can occupy 149,616–163,713 ha in the CR (with respect to ecological limits set by the Czech legislation). The potential economic effect expressed by the gross yield of forest production might be higher by 27–30 million EUR·yr–1. The results of the analysis support the forest owners’ interest to extend Douglas-fir production in the CR, similarly like it has been extended systematically in all European countries where natural conditions allow.

Injuries to the hand are more common than those of any other body region and can have considerable financial, time-measured and psychological impact on not only the victim but also the community as a whole. Hand rehabilitation aims to return people to their pre-injury roles and occupations and has proved largely successful in doing so with the potential for technology to improve these results further. However, most technology used in hand rehabilitation is based on expensive and non-durable glove-based systems and issues with accuracy are common among those that are not glove-based. This chapter proposes the use of accurate, affordable and portable solutions such as the Leap Motion as a tool for hand rehabilitation. User feedback can be provided primarily through an animated 3d hand model as the user performs rehabilitative exercises.

55 patients with 64 injuries of the hand sustained while playing cricket were reviewed, 46 clinically. Most of the injuries were during fielding. The peripheral digits were most frequently involved and joint injuries predominated. Though the majority of the patients had a satisfactory functional outcome, some admitted to occasional pain and persistence of swelling and/or minor deformity. The most serious injuries were eleven fractures of the base of the middle phalanx with dislocation of the P.I.P. joint.

Background: Avocados are increasingly being consumed due to the nutritional benefits they provide. Avocado related hand injuries reflect their increasing popularity. Most injuries occur in attempting to de-stone the fruit. This is a prospective cohort study reviewing hand injuries sustained from preparing the fruit. Methods: Data was prospectively collected from three centres across United Kingdom (UK) over a 4-year period. The data was analysed for patient demographics, nature and zone of injury and management required. Results: A total of 35 patients and 42 injuries were included in the study. The median age of patients presenting with these injuries was 33 years, with majority of injuries occurring in the 21–30 age group. Most (88%, n = 31) of patients were male. Majority (85%, n = 36) of injuries happened during the de-stoning of the fruit. All injuries occurred in the non-dominant hand, with 70%, (n = 30) of wounds being sustained in zone 3. All injuries required surgical management and needed between 1 to 6 follow up outpatient visits. Vital structures such as tendons, digital nerves, pulleys and joint capsule were frequently implicated and required exploration or repair. Conclusions: Avocado related hand wounds are serious injuries with an associated morbidity. They frequently sustained by young patients. They usually require surgical management and may need numerous outpatient attendances. Caution and public education should be advocated on the preparation of avocados. This is the largest study to date that has reviewed the surgical management of avocado hand injuries.

Abstract Introduction Blast injuries are common during wartime but are also related to various holiday festivals worldwide. Despite strict legislations, these devices still cause serious injuries leaving permanent disabilities. Children are affected in numerous cases with the hand being the most affected body region. The aim of our study was to profile the blast related hand injuries and to review treatment modalities that we used. Methods A retrospective study of patients treated for blast-devices related hand injuries between 2006 and 2015 was performed. Results 112 patient with blast related hand injuries were treated in our department during the 10-year period. Most of the patients were male. The dominant hand was injured in 83.9% of the patients. Associated injuries were observed in 14.3% of patients. 90 children were treated on an out-patient basis, mostly due to hand burns (86.7%) or uncomplicated blast injuries (13.3%). 22 children required hospitalization due to severe blast and crush injuries and amputations. Surgery was carried out as the urgent procedure and involved debridement with primary repair. In the case of amputations debridement and sufficient skin ensuring complete wound coverage was the procedure of choice. Conclusion Blast related injuries of the hand during childhood are frequent and can cause different and complex defects. Besides prevention of these injuries, primary reconstruction of the affected hand is of outmost importance in preventing long-term consequences.

Around six months have passed since the emergence of an ongoing coronavirus-related health pandemic. In resource-limited countries, healthcare systems with fewer options for intervention are likely to face more economic difficulties. The goal of this review is to summarize and explore the cost and economic effect of COVID-19 on global health systems. The study starts with a crisis synopsis and costs of COVID-19 treatment, then discusses how health has been affected and approaches to alleviating the burden while at the same time limiting an inevitable income loss. Even if it is difficult to project COVID-19 spending because there are many uncertainties about the disease and its future course, various reports have quantified the amounts spent on direct COVID-19 treatment in different countries. The healthcare sector around the world has faced catastrophic financial challenges and experienced the largest global recession in history. Most governments in the world cannot avoid the devastating economic impact of COVID-19 on the healthcare sector, but they can try to avert the worst effects. With the spread of the coronavirus, the healthcare systems are facing a financial crisis as a result of actions that countries have adopted to mitigate the spread of the virus. Therefore, it is crucial to act swiftly and in meaningful ways to minimize the fallout from this shock.

This paper provides an input–output (I/O)-based economic impact analysis for organic apple production in Washington State. The intent is to compare the economic ‘ripple’ effect of organic production with conventional production. The analysis is presented in two scenarios: first we compare the economic impact of organic versus conventional apple production for a final demand increase of US$1 million as measured in sales. In the second analysis, the economic impacts of organic and conventional apple production are compared in terms of a given unit of land (405 ha of production). Both state-wide output (sales) and employment (jobs) impacts are estimated under each scenario. Results are presented in terms of direct, indirect, and induced economic impact. Organic apple production was more labor intensive than conventional production. While the organic apple sector used less intermediate inputs per unit of output than conventional production, it also produced higher returns to labor and capital. As a result, the indirect economic effect was lower for the organic sector than the conventional sector, but the induced economic effect was higher for organic. Given the organic price premium, the economic impact (direct, indirect and induced) was larger for organic apple production than conventional apple production.

Psychological factors related to the treatment and rehabilitation of hand-injured patients were identified by interviewing of thirty patients under treatment. Findings were compared with those reported in the literature. Concern for inactivity, desire to return to work, and effort toward recovery were identified as significantly common factors; pain and fear of disfigurement were not. Patients perceived themselves as making the greatest effort toward recovery but not that this was the most important factor in the recovery process. Responsibility varied significantly among the early, middle, and final phases of treatment. The results of the investigation were discussed in relation to hand-rehabilitation and implications for counselling and occupational therapy.

Introduction/Objective. The objective of the study was to determinate which groups in the population of children are most prone to hand injuries and to identify the causes of the injuries with the aim of further developing better means of prevention of severe injuries that can lead to invalidity. Methods. A retrospective epidemiological study was carried out, and included all children with hand injuries admitted to our hospital between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2017; The data were collected and analyzed statistically using SPSS?. Significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results. The total number of patients was 254, 202 boys and 52 girls, with a mean age for both genders 10,13 years (range1-17). The majority of patients were from an urban population 56,7% and 43,3% were from a rural area. Regarding the month in the year when the injury occurred, there were two peaks, in January and in May. The right hand was more affected, 53,2%, than the left, 45,6%, and both hands were affected in 1,8% of cases. Isolated soft tissue injuries (skin, muscles, tendons) were present in 59% of cases, isolated bone injuries (phalangeal and metacarpal bone fractures) in 15,3%, and both soft tissue and bone injuries in 25,7% of cases. The little finger was the most affected, followed by the long finger and thumb, index and ring finger, respectively. The most serious injuries were from explosive wounds caused by firecrackers and handling agricultural tools and engines. Conclusion. Hand injuries in childhood are common and can have devastating consequences. Developing prevention program by raising awareness about this issue is of vital importance.
