Circular thin-walled elastic tubes under concentric axial loading usually fail by shell buckling, and in practical design procedures the buckling load can be determined by modifying the local buckling stress to account empirically for the imperfection sensitive response that is typical in Donnell shell theory. While the local buckling stress of a hollow thin-walled tube under concentric axial compression has a solution in closed form, that of a thin-walled circular tube with an elastic infill, which restrains the local buckling mode, has received far less attention. This paper addresses the local buckling of a tubular member subjected to axial compression, and formulates an energy-based technique for determining the local buckling stress as a function of the stiffness of the elastic infill by recourse to a transcendental equation. This simple energy formulation, with one degree of buckling freedom, shows that the elastic local buckling stress increases from 1 to [Formula: see text] times that of a hollow tube as the stiffness of the elastic infill increases from zero to infinity; the latter case being typical of that of a concrete-filled steel tube. The energy formulation is then recast into a multi-degree of freedom matrix stiffness format, in which the function for the buckling mode is a Fourier representation satisfying, a priori, the necessary kinematic condition that the buckling deformation vanishes at the point where it enters the elastic medium. The solution is shown to converge rapidly, and demonstrates that the simple transcendental formulation provides a sufficiently accurate representation of the buckling problem.

High strength steel sections have been increasingly used in buildings and bridges, and steel angles have also been widely used in many steel structures, especially in transmission towers and long span trusses. However, high strength steel exhibits mechanical properties that are quite different from ordinary strength steel, and hence, the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression varies with the steel strength. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship of the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression with the steel strength. A finite element model is developed in this paper to analyze the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression, and study its relationship with the steel strength and the width-to-thickness ratio of the angle leg. The finite element analysis (FEA) results are compared with the corresponding design method in the American code AISC 360-05, which provides a reference for the related design.

In practical application, pipelines will inevitably experience bending and compression during manufacture, transportation and offshore installation. The mechanical behavior of tubes under combined axial compression and bending loads is investigated using experiments and finite element method in this paper. Tubes with D/t ratios in the range of 40 and 97 are adopted in the experiments. Then, the ultimate loads and the local buckling modes of tubes are studied. The commercial software ABAQUS is used to build FE models to simulate the load-shortening responses of tubes under combined loads. The results acquired from the ABAQUS simulation are compared with the ones from verification bending experiment, which are in good agreement with each other. The models in this paper are feasible to analyze the mechanical properties of tubes under combined axial compression and bending loads. The related results may be of interest to the manufacture engineers.

18 specimens of cold-formed steel three limbs built-up section members are tested under axial compression load in this paper. The section forms are divided into two categories: A and B. Load-displacement (P-Δ) curves and failure characteristics of specimens are obtained. The results show that: As to section A members, the failure characteristics of LC, MC and SC series of specimens are flexural-torsional buckling, torsional buckling and distortional buckling, local buckling and distortional buckling. As to section B members, the failure characteristics of LC, MC series of specimens are flexural buckling, while local buckling and distortional buckling for members of SC series.

Concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls with shear studs, one type of steel–concrete–steel walls, are recently developed and have been used in high-rise buildings, for which fire safety is a big concern. In order to investigate the fire endurance of this new type of concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls, three specimens with different axial compression ratios and different lengths and intervals of shear studs were tested under one-side ISO-834 standard fire to obtain the temperature distribution, deformation, and detailed failure modes. Each specimen consisted of a concrete filled double-steel-plate composite wall-body and two boundary columns. Moreover, finite-element-based numerical investigations were conducted to confirm and extend experimental findings. All the concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls failed in compression–flexure mode with the local buckling at the compressive steel plate. The results indicate that the fire endurance of concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls is significantly affected by the axial compression ratio, the eccentricity of the axial load, and the bond strength between shear studs and concrete. Axial compression ratio, defined as the ratio of axial compression to the nominal compressive capacity of concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls, has both positive and negative effects on the fire endurance of concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls. The axial load eccentricity toward the unexposed side is much more detrimental to the fire endurance of concrete filled double-steel-plate composite walls than the one toward the exposed side. In engineering practice, it is recommended that proper intervals (not greater than 300 mm) and lengths (not less than 40 mm) of the shear studs should be used to ensure the bond between concrete and steel plates.

Finite element models (FE models) of high-strength steel Q420 (yield strength 420 MPa) circular tubes considering residual stresses and local and overall geometric imperfections were established and verified against existing test data. Based on parameter analysis, it was derived that the reduction of ultimate capacity resulting from residual stresses was up to 11.8%. When slenderness ratio was larger than 25, the effect of overall geometric imperfection played a major role compared with that of local geometric imperfection, which resulted in the reduction of the ultimate capacity of about 11.5%. Through tracking the failure process, it was found that, in the initial stage of loading, the deformation of columns mainly presents overall bending. When the load increased near the ultimate load, local buckling occurred and the bearing capacity decreased rapidly. The D/t limit value 27 was determined for preventing the local buckling, and the overall slenderness λl limit value 40 was proposed to distinguish whether local buckling occurs. Based on the FEM result and test data, the applicability of ASCE48-05 and AS4100 for local buckling resistance was evaluated. Continuing the result of stub columns, curve a in GB50017-2017 and in Eurocode 3 of the overall buckling factor φ was proposed to be used in EWM and DSM for estimating the interactive buckling resistance of circular tubes of Q420 under axial compression.
