The annual variations in body-size spectra of planktonic ciliate communities and their relationships to environmental conditions were studied based on a 12-month dataset (June 2007 to May 2008) from Jiaozhou Bay on the Yellow Sea coast of northern China. Based on the dataset, the body sizes of the ciliates, expressed as equivalent spherical diameters, included five ranks: S1 (5–35 μm); S2 (35–55 μm); S3 (55–75 μm); S4 (75–100 μm); and S5 (100–350 μm). These body-size ranks showed a clear temporal succession of dominance in the order of S2 (January–April) → S1 (May–July) → S4 (August–September) → S3 (October–December). Multivariate analyses showed that the temporal variations in their body-size patterns were significantly correlated with changes in environmental conditions, especially water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) and nutrients. In terms of abundance, rank S2 was significantly correlated with water temperature, DO and nutrients, whereas ranks S4 and S5 were correlated with the salinity and nutrients respectively (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the body-size patterns of planktonic ciliate communities showed a clear temporal pattern during an annual cycle and significantly associated with environmental conditions in marine ecosystems.

Volatilization represents an important process in the displacement of pesticides for the environment. The physicochemical properties of the clomazone molecule indicate its relative volatility. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the volatilization of different clomazone herbicide formulations using bioindicator species. To that end, airtight glass boxes were used with the presence of different clomazone formulations and plant species. The formulations used were Gamit 360 CS(r), Gamit 500 EC(r) and Gamit Star(r). The plant species assessed were maize, sorghum and rice. With the results obtained it is possible to conclude that, among the formulations, Gamit 360 CS(r) has caused less phytotoxicity to the bioindicator species in comparison to the formulations of Gamit 500 EC(r) and Gamit Star(r) formulations. In general, The Gamit 500 EC(r) and Gamit Star(r) have not differed in the phytotoxicity potential for the bioindicator species.

A tropical storm (TS) Roanu occurred in northern Sri Lanka in 2016, which transported northwards along the west coast of the Bay of Bengal (BoB). During the development of the TS, ocean eddies on its track had an important effect on the intensity of Roanu. The dynamic mechanism was investigated with multisource reanalysis and Argo float data in this study. The results show that ocean eddies were the main reason why Roanu first enhanced, weakened, and then enhanced again. Warm eddy W1 supports the initial development of the TS, cold eddy C1 weakens Roanu, and warm eddy W2 continues to support Roanu. On May 19, 2016, the maximum average latent heat flux over W1 was 260.85 w/m2, while that of C1 was only 200.71 w/m2. After the passage of Roanu, the tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) of eddies significantly decreased. The TCHP of W1, W2, C1 and C2 decreased by 20.95 kJ/cm2, 11.07 kJ/cm2, 29.82 kJ/cm2, 9.31 kJ/cm2, respectively. The mixed layer of warm eddies deepened much more than that of cold eddies, supporting Roanu development. In addition, changes in potential vorticity (PV) values caused by the disturbance of eddies may also reflect changes in the TS intensity. This study offers new insights on the influence of ocean eddies in regulating the development of tropical cyclone (TC) in the BoB.

Background. Many natural aquatic bodies have been contaminated with heavy metals released from domestic, industrial and other anthropogenic activities. Fish are an important bioindicator species and play an important role in the monitoring of water pollution. Objectives. This study shows the effect of heavy metals on the distribution of glutathione S-transferases (GST), catalase, rhodanese and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulphur transferase (3-MST) isolated from the liver, gills, fins and muscle of Clarias gariepinus. Methods . Glutathione S-transferase, catalase, rhodanese and 3-mercaptopyruvate S-transferase enzymes were isolated from the liver and gills of fish by homogenization of each tissue (with specific buffers for each enzyme) and centrifugation. Serial dilutions of the crude enzymes were then assayed for residual enzymatic activities using standard enzyme assay protocol. Results. The results showed heavy metals in the liver and muscle of the investigated fish. This study indicated significant accumulation of heavy metals in the tissues/organ of the fish from Ilesha, Osogbo and Yakoyo fish ponds. These are three main towns in Osun State where the major occupation is fish farming. The relationship between enzymatic activities and heavy metal content in C gariepinus tissue showed positive and significant (p&lt;0.05) correlations between lead (Pb) and GST as well as chromium (Cr) and GST. This implies that higher concentrations of Pb and Cr induced the expression of greater GST activity in the fish tissue. Conclusions. The study concluded that the pattern of response of GST, catalase, rhodanese and 3-MST activities in the various organs/tissues of C gariepinus to the heavy metals suggests that the excitation or inhibitions of their activities are organ specific. Further biochemical studies of fish tissues/organs are needed to characterize the enzymatic changes associated with heavy metal pollution. The Matāura River is the sixth largest river system in New Zealand and has long been subject to agricultural, industrial, and residential land use activities. The catchment has economic value and is of great cultural importance for local Māori, who have concerns over potential adverse impacts that anthropogenic stressors exert on the health of the river. There is a dearth of information on the impacts of these stressors towards the health of native species such as the longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii. This study assessed the environmental status of the Matāura River using biological and chemical methodologies incorporating A. dieffenbachii as a bioindicator species for exposure to multiple anthropogenic stressors. A range of biomarkers were measured in caged and wild-caught eels (when available) to characterize site-specific responses to anthropogenic stressors. While there was no clear indication of cumulative impacts moving from pristine headwaters to the lower reaches of the Matāura River, biomarkers of xenobiotic metabolization were induced in A. dieffenbachia and there was evidence of chemical contamination in sediment and tissue samples.
