A series of derivatives of trans-3-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)4,5-dihydroisoxazolo-4,5-bis[carbonyl-(4′phenyl)thiosemicarbazide (9) and of trans-3-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)-4,5-dihydro isoxazolo-4,5-bis(aroylcarbohydrazide) (10a–c) were synthesized from trans-3-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)-4,5-dihydro-4,5-bis(hydrazenocarbonyl)isoxazole (8). The structures of the compounds were elucidated by both elemental and spectral (IR, NMR, and MS) analysis. Compound 9 shows activity against some bacterial species. No antibacterial activities were observed for compounds 10a–c. The antioxidant activity of the new compounds has been screened. Compound 9 showed higher antioxidant activity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2’-azino–bis(3-ethylbenzoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt methods.

We investigated the effect of different solvents (ethyl acetate, methanol, acetone, and chloroform) on the extraction of phytoconstituents fromLantana camaraleaves and their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Further, GC-MS analysis was carried out to identify the bioactive chemical constituents occurring in the active extract. The results revealed the presence of various phytocompounds in the extracts. The methanol solvent recovered higher extractable compounds (14.4% of yield) and contained the highest phenolic (92.8 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (26.5 mg RE/g) content. DPPH radical scavenging assay showed the IC50value of 165, 200, 245, and 440 μg/mL for methanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, and chloroform extracts, respectively. The hydroxyl scavenging activity test showed the IC50value of 110, 240, 300, and 510 μg/mL for methanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, and chloroform extracts, respectively. Gram negative bacterial pathogens (E. coliandK. pneumoniae) were more susceptible to all extracts compared to Gram positive bacteria (M. luteus,B. subtilis, andS. aureus). Methanol extract had the highest inhibition activity against all the tested microbes. Moreover, methanolic extract ofL. camaracontained 32 bioactive components as revealed by GC-MS study. The identified major compounds included hexadecanoic acid (5.197%), phytol (4.528%), caryophyllene oxide (4.605%), and 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, methyl ester, (Z,Z,Z)- (3.751%).

Algerian fir (Abies numidica de Lannoy) is an endemic evergreen tree belonging to the Pinaceae family. Little is known about this plant, and few papers have been reported, despite its traditional uses. The objectives of this study were to investigate the chemical composition of n-butanol extract from A. numidica leaves as well as to evaluate its biological activities (antibacterial and antioxidant). The total phenolics and total flavonoids were found in high amounts (381.15±22.70µg GAE/ml; 49.79±2.81 µg QE /ml, respectively). The data of the antibacterial effect showed a potential inhibitory zone, especially against Proteus vulgaris (17.5±0.70 mm). The antioxidant activity findings disclosed that this fraction has a moderate radical scavenging power and metal chelating ability, compared with the standards used. The liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis results showed that the major compounds presented in this extract were hyperoside (399.91µg/g), astragalin (147.22 µg/g) and rutin (102.62 µg/g). Thus, A. numidica leaves were suggested as being useful to prevent free radicals and bacterial infections diseases.

The occurrence of drug resistant bacteria warrant investigation on herbal plants for effective antibacterial agents. Vernonia glaberrima leaf (VGL) and stem (VGS) hexane extracts were subjected to analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and subsequently evaluated for antibacterial activity alone and in combination each with Sparfloxacin (SPX) and Ciprofloxacin (CPX) on selected bacteria including resistant species. GC-MS analysis revealed fatty acid esters, triterpenoids and aromatic derivatives largely identified as responsible for the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Both the VGL and VGS demonstrated potent antibacterial activities on P. aeruginosa (29 mm and 27 mm), respectively. However, combination of SPX with VGL potentiated the effects on E. coli and S. typhi by synergistic interaction. Similarly, the efficacy of CFX in combination with VGS on MRSA (30 mm) was significantly enhanced by additive action. It was observed that VGS potentiation of CFX on P. aeruginosa (32 mm) was the most effective antibacterial inhibition recorded in the study. Thus, combination of SPX and CFX each with the extracts has revealed remarkable properties for alternative or complementary therapeutic strategy. Our findings elicit enormous potentials of V. glaberrima hexane extracts as treatment adjuncts for combating drug resistant bacteria. It will be interesting to evaluate in vivo effects of extracts in combination with antibiotics against drug resistant bacteria.

 Giant forest ant Dinomyrmex gigas is one of the largest ants species in the world, native to the rain forests of Southeast Asia. It is known that ants have glands that produce chemical compounds that inhibit the growth of microbes. Therefore, it is necessary to deter-mine the antioxidant and antibacterial activities as well as identify the chemical compounds of D. gigas extract. D. gigas was extracted successively with n-hexane, ethanol and methanol. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by determination of the half-maximal inhibi-tory concentration (IC50) values while the antibacterial activities of the extracts were determined by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The results exhibited that the IC50 values of n-hexane, ethanolic and methanolic extracts were 336.18±0.0984, 89.16±0.0219 and 90.72±0.0894 μg/mL respectively. The ethanolic extract exhibited the highest AAI value (0.34) followed by metha-nolic extract (0.33) and n-hexane extract (0.09). Based on AAI val-ues, the extracts were classified as moderate antioxidants. The best MIC values were 625 μg/mL for both ethanolic and methanolic ex-tracts against S. aureus, while MIC values of all extracts against E. coli were >625 μg/mL. Based on MIC values, all of the extracts presented weak activity against both S. aureus and E.coli. The GC-MS analysis showed that there are up to 30 compounds construct-ed of the ethanolic extract. Three major compounds are ethyl oleate  (29.78%), n-hexadecanoic acid (17.54%) and oleic acid (10.65%).
