The developments in the area of aerospace, advancing activities in aircraft field and automotive industry emerges the exploit of new materials. In such applications, the role of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) is inevitable. In the proposed article, the fabrication of Al (6351) alloy reinforced with SiC and varying weight proportion of Boron Carbide (B4C) was done through stir casting process. The characterization of prepared composite materials is evaluated to ensure the homogeneous distribution of reinforced particulates in Al matrix. The existence of alloying elements and their mapping is done through EDS. Moreover, the enhancement of physical and mechanical behavior of the fabricated composites is also discussed in detail.

Recent interest in the literature on ternary compounds of the AlCuFe type has been prompted by the discovery of stable quasicrystalline phases in these type of alloys (1) . Therefore, different investigationes have been carried out in the past, related with the structural characteristics and also the mechanical properties of these compounds (2) . It is interesting to point out that very few studies have been carried out on the structural characteristics of the phases which commonly coexist with the icosahedral phase in this ternary alloy (3) . In this investigation an assessment of the chemical and structural properties of the phases obtained in alloys of AlCuFe is carried out.Ternary alloys with approximately 20 different compositions have been prepared. The compositional ranges were: Al(60-65%at), Cu(20-25%at) and Fe(10-15%at). The preparation of the alloys used two different casting process; a gravity chill casting technique and also the spin wheel casting method. These casting techniques were able to provide different cooling velocities in the final ingots or metallic strips.

The forming behavior of a particulate reinforced AA 7075-TiC composite produced by in-situ stir casting process was investigated with cold upsetting test using graphite as lubricant. The prepared composites containing 0%, 4% and 8% of TiC reinforcement was completely investigated under tri-axial stress state condition. The various stress parameters were evaluated for all the above said composites and its variation with respect to axial strain was plotted, studied and discussed. Microstructural characterization of the composites was also done to study the distribution of the reinforcement in the metal matrix composite.

The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process is a quite recent joining method whose particular characteristics yield to materials modifications not yet fully understood. This paper aims to present the research results of a study focused on the modifications induced in an aluminium alloy AA5083 – H111, when processed by FSW to build components for structural applications. The welded samples were firstly analysed by optical microscopy in order to define the different joined zones and to identify defects. Further tests included the measurement of the Vickers microhardness, grain and particle distribution and chemical analysis of the constituents, particularly of the intermetallic second phase particles, by Auger spectroscopy. Special attention has been given to the characterisation of several microstructural “non-homogeneities” like a laminated structure called onion ring and an identified anomaly (in the form of a line), whose presence was evaluated in order to determine its effects on the final joint properties. The results have shown important new details about the relationship between the microstructure and the final joint structural properties, contributing to improve the knowledge about the materials behaviour increasing the potential of utilization of the FSW process.

We have reported the dependence of the magnetic and recording properties of CoPtCr recording media on the thickness of the Cr underlayer. It was inferred from XRD data that grain-to-grain epitaxy of the Cr with the CoPtCr was responsible for the interaction observed between these layers. However, no cross-sectional TEM (XTEM) work was performed to confirm this inference. In this paper, we report the application of new techniques for preparing XTEM specimens from actual magnetic recording disks, and for layer-by-layer micro-diffraction with an electron probe elongated parallel to the surface of the deposited structure which elucidate the effect of the crystallographic structure of the Cr on that of the CoPtCr.XTEM specimens were prepared from magnetic recording disks by modifying a technique used to prepare semiconductor specimens. After 3mm disks were prepared per the standard XTEM procedure, these disks were then lapped using a tripod polishing device. A grid with a single 1mmx2mm hole was then glued with M-bond 610 to the polished side of the disk.

Considerable amount of work has been done in studying the relationship between the contact resistance and the microstructure of the Au-Ge-Ni based ohmic contacts to n-GaAs. It has been found that the lower contact resistivity is due to the presence of Ge rich and Au free regions (good contact area) in contact with GaAs. Thus in order to obtain an ohmic contact with lower contact resistance one should obtain a uniformly alloyed region of good contact areas almost everywhere. This can possibly be accomplished by utilizing various alloying schemes. In this work microstructural characterization, employing TEM techniques, of the sequentially deposited Au-Ge-Ni based ohmic contact to the MODFET device is presented. The substrate used in the present work consists of 1 μm thick buffer layer of GaAs grown on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate followed by a 25 Å spacer layer of undoped AlGaAs.

RENi5 (RE: rare earth) based alloys have been extensively evaluated for use as an electrode material for nickel-metal hydride batteries. A variety of alloys have been developed from the prototype intermetallic compound LaNi5. The use of mischmetal as a source of rare earth combined with transition metal and Al substitutions for Ni has caused the evolution of the alloy from a binary compound to one containing eight or more elements. This study evaluated the microstructural features of a complex commercial RENi5 based alloy using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The alloy was evaluated in the as-cast condition. Its chemistry in at. pct. determined by bulk techniques was 12.1 La, 3.2 Ce, 1.5 Pr, 4.9 Nd, 50.2 Ni, 10.4 Co, 5.3 Mn and 2.0 Al. The as-cast material was of low strength, very brittle and contained a multitude of internal cracks. TEM foils could only be prepared by first embedding pieces of the alloy in epoxy.
