Reinspection of Waugh, Plake, and Rienzi's 2000 data allowed for several additional analyses. Statistical confirmation was found for no more negative attitudes toward gay marriage as measured by returned responses among churchgoers than among the general public. Confirmation was also found for their previous conclusion that the putative gay marriage controversy among Christian church attendees would be greater than among the general public, but for reasons different from those they proposed. Finally, it is argued that the limitations for the lost letter technique in “prohibiting fine distinctions” is not always correct because their analysis of one research question seemed not too subtle a distinction for the technique.

AbstractWe report the analysis of a 36-kbp region of the Neurospora crassa genome, which contains homologs of two closely linked stationary phase genes, SNZ1 and SNO1, from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Homologs of SNZ1 encode extremely highly conserved proteins that have been implicated in pyridoxine (vitamin B6) metabolism in the filamentous fungi Cercospora nicotianae and in Aspergillus nidulans. In N. crassa, SNZ and SNO homologs map to the region occupied by pdx-1 (pyridoxine requiring), a gene that has been known for several decades, but which was not sequenced previously. In this study, pyridoxine-requiring mutants of N. crassa were found to possess mutations that disrupt conserved regions in either the SNZ or SNO homolog. Previously, nearly all of these mutants were classified as pdx-1. However, one mutant with a disrupted SNO homolog was at one time designated pdx-2. It now appears appropriate to reserve the pdx-1 designation for the N. crassa SNZ homolog and pdx-2 for the SNO homolog. We further report annotation of the entire 36,030-bp region, which contains at least 12 protein coding genes, supporting a previous conclusion of high gene densities (12,000-13,000 total genes) for N. crassa. Among genes in this region other than SNZ and SNO homologs, there was no evidence of shared function. Four of the genes in this region appear to have been lost from the S. cerevisiae lineage.


When a muscle has been soaked in a moderately hypertonic solution its mechanical response to a shock is delayed, but its heat production is almost normal and starts considerably earlier than its shortening. After a more hypertonic solution the mechanical response is abolished, but a substantial part of the heat production remains. These effects are rapidly reversed by soaking in a normal isotonic solution. They strengthen the previous conclusion that chemical reactions triggered by a stimulus precede the mechanical response.

Alony (2006), Seeing the forest when entry is unlikely: Probability and the mental representation of events, Journal of experimental psychology: General, examined the effect of manipulating the likelihood of future events on level of construal (i.e., mental abstraction). Over seven experiments, they consistently found that subjectively unlikely (vs. likely) future events were more abstractly (vs. concretely) construed. This well-cited, but understudied finding has had a major influence on the CLT literature: Likelihood is considered to be one of four psychological distances assumed to influence mental abstraction in similar ways (Trope & Liberman, 2010). Contrary to the original empirical findings, we present two close replication attempts (N = 115 and N = 120; the original studies had N = 20 and N = 34) which failed to find the effect of likelihood on construal level. Bayesian analyses provided diagnostic support for the absence of an effect. In light of the failed replications, we present a meta-analytic summary of the accumulated evidence on the effect. It suggests a strong trend of declining effect sizes as a function of larger samples. These results call into question the previous conclusion that likelihood has a reliable influence on construal level. We discuss the implications of these findings for construal level theory, and advise against treating likelihood as a psychological distance until further tests have established the relationship.

Figures published in the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (1967), and also for a population of known size in Aberdeen, confirm a previous conclusion, derived primarily from mortality statistics, that currently accepted estimates of 100,000 illegal abortions in Great Britain each year before the Abortion Act 1967 came into operation are much exaggerated. A National Opinion Polls estimate of 31,000 is also regarded as too high, and the Aberdeen data suggest that the true figure probably did not exceed 20,000. It is important to arrive at an accurate estimate for the proper assessment of the demographic and other effects of the change in the law. The Registrar General's figures for legal terminations during the first months' operation of the Act are discussed in a postscript.

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) reopened the safety assessment of Acid Violet 43, a cosmetic ingredient that is an anthraquinone dye reported to function in cosmetics as a colorant. This colorant has the same chemical structure as Ext. D&C Violet No. 2, which is a certified colorant; however, Acid Violet 43 is not a certified color and it could have impurities that are not allowed in the certified color. The Panel reviewed relevant new data related to this ingredient and concluded that Acid Violet 43 is safe in the present practices of use and concentration for use in hair dye formulations. This conclusion supersedes the previous conclusion for Acid Violet 43 that included impurity specifications indicated for the certified color.

ABSTRACT mazEF is a stress-induced toxin-antitoxin module located on the chromosomes of many bacteria. Here we induced Escherichia coli chromosomal mazEF by various stressful conditions. We found an irreversible loss of viability, which is the basic characteristic of cell death. These results further support our previous conclusion that E. coli mazEF mediation of cell death is not a passive process, but an active and genetically “programmed” death response.

Experiments reported here further support the previous conclusion that the shortening of glycerol-treated muscle caused by neutral Nessler's reagent (HgI2 in KI solution) is essentially due to the KI component. Analysis of the data obtained indicates that the apparent binding constant of KI to the contractile protein is 5 or 6 m/l. The same value for the binding ATP is about 10,000. The extent and speed of shortening in HgI2-KI solution are temperature dependent. The molecular rearrangement which results in the shortening of glycerol-treated fibers is considered to be directly related to the binding KI to the protein.

Quantitative product studies under varying conditions are reported for the systems named in the title to the present paper. The results obtained lend further support to our previous conclusion that benzoyl peroxide is not a suitable reagent for evaluation of reactivities towards free radicals (Pausacker 1957). Isomer ratios in the (mono-) phenylation and benzoyloxylation of naphthalene by benzoyl peroxide are reported and discussed.

The corpus luteum (CL) of the tammar wallaby is inhibited by prolactin during lactation and seasonal quiescence. In seasonal quiescence a daily transient pulse of prolactin (PRL) of less than 2 h duration is sufficient to maintain inhibition. We investigated whether the same inhibition applies in lactation and, if so, how. Our results show that inhibition of the CL during lactation is maintained by a transient pulse of prolactin once a day. They also show that the minimum time without a PRL pulse for the CL to escape inhibition is more than 48 h and less than 72 h. Nevertheless, some animals had a longer refractory period than 72 h, which was reflected in a longer interval to the progesterone peak and birth. These results support the previous conclusion that PRL exercises its effect on a rate-limiting step in progesterone synthesis and secretion rate from the CL, which precedes any increase in its mass. Therefore, we conclude that the role of PRL is to act as a luteostatic agent, an effect that is in marked contrast to its luteotrophic effect in many eutherian species, including rodents.
