In mass manufacturing of optical fibers, the wet-on-wet polymer resin coating is an efficient process for applying double layer coatings on the glass fiber. This paper presents an analytic study on the behavior of non-Newtonian polymer resins in the double layer coating liquid flow inside a secondary coating die of the optical fiber coating applicator. Based the approximations of fully developed laminar flow and the power law model of non-Newtonian fluid, the coating liquid flow of two immiscible resin layers is modeled for the simplified geometry of capillary annulus, where the surface of glass fiber moves at high fiber drawing speed. The effects of important parameters such as non-Newtonian fluid properties, the coating die size, and fiber drawing speed are investigated on the resin velocity profiles and secondary coating layer thickness.

Stainless steels, such as 440C steel are commonly used for engineering applications. The high carbon contents of this steel have significantly been attributed to low corrosion resistance properties. Surface modification such as electrolytic double layer coating with ZrO2/Al2O3 was carried out to control the performance. Samples were deposited in ZrO(NO3)2 and Al (NO3)3 aqueous solution respectively. Potentiodynamic examination (Tafel Extrapolation test) was conducted to measure the corrosion resistance of coated steel. The results showed improvements in hardness properties and corrosion rate as the Al2O3 concentration had been increased.

Abstract ZrO2/Ni3Al-Ni3Al double-layer coating on stainless steel was prepared by powder sintering one-step forming process. The surface-interface morphologies, chemical element distribution and phase compositions of the coatings before and after thermal oxidation or hot corrosion were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The microstructure of the coating was Ni3Al matrix with dispersed ZrO2 particles, which was pure and compacted. The Ni3Al intermediate layer compactly formed between stainless steel substrate and ZrO2/Ni3Al composite coating, with good metallurgical bonding interfaces. The ZrO2/Ni3Al-Ni3Al double-layer coating exhibited a relatively high outmost microhardness of about 500 HV, and then gradually decreased from the coating to the substrate. When thermal oxidized or hot corroded at 1050 ℃, a mixed oxide layer of NiO, Al2O3 and NiAl2O4 formed on the coating surface, which effectively acted as a diffusion barrier for oxygen and corrosive substances, and thus demonstrated the good protective effect of ZrO2/Ni3Al coating.
