A Pilot Classroom-Based Study of Attention and Working Memory Strategies for Primary-Aged Students

An exploratory applied study, using a set of attention and working memory strategies specifically developed for students and named Memory Mates, was completed with normally developing students attending a primary school. Students in one classroom received the intervention, while the other classroom functioned as a control group. The study was experimental, with quantitative measures. Additional qualitative data was collected to facilitate the ongoing development of Memory Mates. A working memory instrument was used to rank students initially, and as a post-intervention measure for children with low working memory, with some gains in working memory observed in the experimental classroom students. Data were collected on academic achievement in reading, spelling, and maths. Post-intervention data analysis of the impact of the Memory Mates intervention showed no differences between the experimental and control groups for standardised academic measures. Several reasons are postulated for the lack of significant quantifiable change, chiefly the short period of intervention.

Using self-determination theory as a guiding framework, this study analyzed the impact of the Sport Education Model in self-determination and motivation, psychological basic need thwarting, enjoymentsatisfaction, boredom, and intention to be physically active in Physical Education (PE) of secondary school students in Spain. Two groups were selected for the study: an experimental group (EG; n=43), which received 19 volleyball lessons following the Sport Education Model, and a control group (CG; n=43), which received 19 traditional Physical Education lessons. Pre- and post-intervention measures were taken in both groups. The results showed significant improvements in intrinsic motivation in EG. The results are discussed, and the suitability of the Sport Education Model to improve self-determined behaviors in Physical Education is emphasized.

ABSTRACT To explore the impact of functional training on completion quality of body difficulty, 24 rhythmic gymnasts aged 10-11 years old were randomly and averagely divided into functional training and control group and trained 2h/day for 1 month. Body difficulty – including balance, rotation, and leap difficulties – was measured before and after training. The results showed that the total score, the score of 360° passé pivot and the score of split leap for the functional training group was respectively 1.87, 0.77, and 0.42 points higher than those for the control group (P<0.05) after 1 month of training. Therefore, it can be concluded that functional training based on Functional Movement Screen (FMS) can clearly improve completion quality of body difficulty in juvenile rhythmic gymnastics within a short period of time.

Although the pedagogical value of portfolio assessment is widely investigated, its impact on students’ engagement is still under-explored. Accordingly, this study intended to examine the impact of portfolio assessment on the Moroccan EFL students’ writing engagement. To this end, two groups of high school students were involved in the study. The two groups were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the treatment; portfolio assessment accompanied with various reflection and assessment techniques (i.e. self-and peer-assessment and teacher-student conferences) whereas the control group followed the regular summative writing achievement tests. To enrich the data, the experimental group students’ views about portfolio assessment were elicited via students’ written reflections. The analysis of the quantitative data showed that the experimental group students achieved a higher and more significant level of writing engagement than the control group students. Furthermore, the analysis of the qualitative data revealed that the students positively perceived portfolio assessment to impact their writing engagement at various levels.

The purpose of the study was to find out the Impact of Land Aerobics and Water Exercise on Cardio Respiratory Endurance Performance among college men Students. To attain the purpose Sixty (N=60) College men students were selected. The subjects were selected equally into three groups of 20 each namely; land aerobics group, water aerobics group and control group. Cardiovascular endurance was selected as dependent variable for this study and it was assessed by Cooper’s 12 minutes run/walk test. The training was resisted to 12 weeks and the number of sessions was limited to 3 days per week. The data for pre and post intervention was taken. Independent ‘t’ test showed significant differences (0.05 Level) in Cardiovascular endurance among the groups. Land Aerobics are superior than Water Aerobics in Cardiovascular endurance. The present study demonstrated that differences in Cardiovascular endurance among Land and Water Aerobic and Control group. Land Aerobic Exercise may have potential role of increasing Cardiovascular endurance. KEYWORDS: Land Aerobics, water Aerobics Cardiovascular endurance.

The study was aimed to investigate the effect of Psychological Skills Training Program on netball shooting performance. The experimental method was used on three groups of an 8-week intervention: combination of diaphragmatic breathing and imagery, plus physical practice (G1); combination of DB and self-talk, plus physical practice (G2); and control group which have physical practice only (G3). A SPANOVA was conducted to assess the impact of all groups on shooting performance across the two time periods. The main effect comparing the two treatments and a control group was significant, p < .001. Post hoc Tukey test differ significantly at p < .05. However, the G2 was not significantly different from the G3. The results indicated that netballers of different skill used of PST, either G1 or G2 were found to improve the netball shooting performance. It was also showed that G1 has better netball shooting performance rather than G2 and G3. As to highlighting, that the principles and practical applications of these most basic psychological skills can be taught in easier ways and probably in a relative short period of time among youth athletes.

Purpose A pre-test, post-test, control group design was employed to investigate the impact of a tailored patient activation intervention (PAI) among inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Methods Patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected from medical records via convenience sampling, were consented, and completed a baseline survey. Based on responses to the baseline 13-item patient activation measure (PAM-13), they were categorized into one of four patient activation stages. During office visits, intervention patients (N=23) were given a tailored PAI based on their baseline stage, which consisted of an information booklet and focused discussion with the gastroenterologist, while the control group (N=27) received usual care. Baseline and 1-month post-intervention scores were compared between the intervention (N=20) and control (N=21) groups for changes in patient activation score, medication adherence, and satisfaction with care. Results Most participants were Caucasian (88%), female (64%), college graduates (56%), and had Crohn's disease (59.2%). Overall, females had a significantly higher (p=0.04) mean activation score (mean=70.9±15.4) than males (mean=60.9±10.7) at baseline. This trend was the same post-intervention (75.6 females vs 64.4 males; p=0.03). The difference in mean activation scores pre- vs post-intervention was not statistically significant between the intervention and control groups (mean=4.9±12.3, p=0.21). However, this difference could be considered to be clinically significant based on results from previous studies. There were no significant differences in medication adherence or satisfaction scores pre- vs post-intervention for either group. Conclusion Tailored PAIs have the potential to increase activation level of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This customized medical interaction increased patient involvement in disease management and could potentially lead to improved health outcomes.

This study is of considerable importance because Information Technology and electronic media (Multimedia) are being extensively used for conveying information, transacting business, remitting money and for creating awareness about socio-political environment, and so on. Therefore, in view of the reach and ease of multimedia, the purpose of this study was to find out the impact of using multimedia on student-learners’ academic achievement at the primary level. Two groups of 20 female school students from the third standard each were constituted the experiment group and control group. No external intervention was allowed in the course of imparting instruction – traditional method was used for the control group and multimedia devices (products) were used in the experiment group. Marked (significant) difference was found between the two groups’ achievements. The experimental group female students raised their achievement level. Lower achievement was shown by the female group-students in the control group.

70% of high school students see anxiety and depression as a “major problem” among their peers (Pew Research Center). Meditation decreases anxiety and stress according to Harvard researchers. Stress and memory are very much connected as a recent study concluded that non-stressed people remember more items on average than stressed people. Although several studies have been done on the impacts of meditation, there has been no research done specifically on the impact of meditation on high school students’ working memory. This study utilized a pre-post survey design and a running control group to determine whether mindfulness and working memory capacity increased as a result of a week of daily meditation. Students were randomly assigned to the mindfulness meditation group or to the running control group. Both groups took The Human Benchmark memory test and the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (a Likert scale) before and after a week of meditation or running. The results proved to be significant, showing that mindfulness increased on average by .8 points, while the control only increased by .03 points on average. In addition, memory test scores increased by 40.3% for the meditation group compared to 8.3% for the control group.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the training program based on Bar-On model of emotional-social intelligence on the development of cognitive flexibility among secondary school students in Jordan. The study sample consisted of 40 male and female students who were randomly selected. The students were equally divided into experimental group and control group .The students in the experimental and control groups completed pre-test and post-test that measure their cognitive flexibility. The students in the experimental group received emotional intelligence training that was developed based on Bar-On model of emotional-social intelligence. The training program consisted of 15 sessions. The results showed significant differences between the mean scores of the two groups in the degree of cognitive flexibility in the post-test. The students in experimental group scored higher than the students in the control group. However, there were no significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the degree of cognitive flexibility in the tests based on their gender.

The low consumption of vegetables and fruit in school-age children is one of the unresolved nutritional problems in Indonesia. A way to improve vegetable and fruit eating behavior is to increase students' knowledge and attitudes through illustrated story book and heroic tales. The aim of this study is to find out the impact of picture books on students' knowledge and attitude. This is a quasy experimental study with Non equivalent control group with a pre-test and post-test which was followed by 97 fourth gradeelementary school students including 41 students of intervention group and 56 students of control group. The mann-whitney test is used to see whether there are  relationships between  independent variable (given of illustrated story books) and the dependent variable (knowledge and attitude) between the intervention and control groups.The results showed a significant increase in knowledge and attitudes in the group which given illustrated story book. There were also significant differences in knowledge changes between the intervention and control groups.
