Abstract Studies of the causes of social unrest typically focus on structural factors or diffusion. This article demonstrates the importance of considering their interaction and reveals a complex interplay between the two. This interaction is examined in the context of the English Swing riots of 1830–1831, in which it is possible to observe the structural factors relevant to each specific incident; this is often impossible when analyzing more recent cases of unrest. The authors find that the riots were triggered by economic factors and that diffusion more than tripled the direct effect of changes in local factors. Economic factors and the presence of potential riot leaders made an area more susceptible to the incoming diffusion of riots. The ways in which structural factors and diffusion interact is relevant to both historical and recent instances of social unrest.

There is considerable interest worldwide in broadband diffusion, with research focusing on aspects such as the provision of broadband in remote areas and the socio-economic factors that determine the likelihood of adoption. This chapter identifies the policies and initiatives used to encourage broadband awareness, availability, and adoption. Using the case study of a local broadband initiative in remote and rural Germany, the chapter asks the question of who can and should be responsible for broadband provision, and how such responsibility ascriptions are realized.

This paper discusses the filling of estuary problem which can be defined as the accumulation of fine materials that causes the invasion of muds all over the estuary and that has a direct effect on the fauna and flora in the river, fishing, swimming and the beauty of the landscapes. All this consequences have social, environmental and economic impact. In the context of the study of this phenomena, analysis of the structuration mechanisms of sedimentary materials in estuaries is carried out in order to better understand the fillings estuarine areas and specially to consider sustainable solutions of “cleansing” of these areas. The Rance estuary is particularly targeted by the study. The aim is to provide answers on the rheological behavior of natural vessels by distinguishing the most significant scales to detect structural factors influencing the rheological parameters.

Ethiopia has recently seen a remarkable fall in the proportion of girls who marry in early adolescence, reflecting the country’s lauded efforts to tackle child marriage. However, aggregate national figures mask a more complex reality. This article explores this complexity, drawing on qualitative data with adolescent girls and boys, their caregivers, service providers and community leaders, from the Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence (GAGE) longitudinal study baseline. Our findings highlight the complex interplay between cultural norms, economic factors, individual voice and agency, and collective support thereof, on the part of leaders and service providers, from grassroots to national levels.

Beginning in the trough of 2000 and culminating in the peak of 2012, gold prices have exhibited a spectacular and unparalleled increase. Based on annual averages, the price of gold did not decrease at all over this 12 year period. The paper considers the various factors that have shaped the surge of gold spot prices over the last two decades using quarterly data. The analysis considers the role of structural changes such as China’s liberalization of the domestic gold market post-2003 and its impact on demand as well as other important economic factors such as risk, the role of quantitative easing and other fundamental factors in the gold market. The study investigates which of the macroeconomic and structural factors are responsible for the long term bullish trend in the gold price, of which China, global economic risk assessments along with quantitative easing have been crucial to understanding the almost uninterrupted price increase over the period.

Abstract The rise of anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a global phenomenon. This article aims to develop a transcultural communication perspective to examine the global rise in anti-Asian violence. It discusses the intersection of global and local factors underlying the rise of anti-Asian racism in Canada, namely (1) the historical and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism (2) the flaws of Canadian multiculturalism, and (3) the insider/outsider dichotomy adopted by mass media’s framing of the pandemic. By explicating these structural factors from a transcultural communication perspective, this article argues that politicized transcultural discussions on white supremacy are urgently needed for initiating constructive conversations over anti-Asian racism worldwide.

Objective: We adopt a novel approach to mediation analysis to account for interrelated life course social processes that constitute later life health disparities. We examine gender-specific direct effect of parental education on functional limitations in later life. Method: Based on the first wave (2007-2010; n = 7,150) of the Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE), we estimate both (natural) direct and indirect effects of parental education on functional limitations in later life. Results: We observed a significant indirect and positive effect of parental education on functional health. Contrary to prior literature, we documented adverse direct effect of parental education on later life functional health. The direct effect is statistically significant only for father’s education, and is greater, though not statistically significantly so, for women than men. Discussion: The intersection of gender status and interrelated social stratification documented by this study highlights the need for gender-sensitive life course research. Such research can enhance our understanding of the ways patriarchal social systems produce heterogeneous effects of interrelated structural factors on later life health for men and women.

In the early twentieth century, two cities exhibited social unrest and social conflict. In Johannesburg, South Africa, the seeds for apartheid were sewn as an influx of workers came to nourish the country's mines. In Rio de Janeiro, the rise of a global economy fostered immigrant communities. This paper analyzes the causes of early twentieth century social unrest as a result of the urbanization of both of these cities, and compares and contrasts both spatial and economic factors. It also investigates the labor landscapes in both cities as a supplement to these changes.

This study aims to show social criticism that, in fact, working as a pedicab driver for Ambonese Christians is not formed because of the calling or "role of religion", but has a uniqueness that is somewhat different from the Protestant community studied by Weber. This is demonstrated through the work ethic of Christian rickshaw pullers who emerged in the aftermath of social unrest in Maluku, were more motivated to pursue work as rickshaw pullers because of the dominant and significant economic factors, rather than religious, social, cultural and political factors which were strengthened through perceptions or views of pedicab drivers about the interesting work of pedicabs as a business opportunity to support the family economy and a source of fulfillment of life needs.
