Effects of Zinc on Yields and Zinc Content of Rice Varieties on Calcareous Soil

SUMMARYApplication of zinc to six high-yielding rice varieties in calcareous soils produced significantly higher grain yield and interactions between varieties and Zn levels were significant. Yields of varieties IR 20, Jaya, Sita and Jayanti at 2.5 and 5.0 ppm Zn were similarly affected, but Archana produced significantly higher grain yield at 5 ppm Zn than at 2.5 ppm. Effects of Zn on straw yield were similar. Zn application invariably resulted in a higher Zn concentration in plants at all stages of growth and in grain in all varieties. Maximum Zn contents were observed at the tillering stage and minimum at harvest.

Human zinc (Zn) deficiency is a worldwide problem, especially in developing countries due to the prevalence of cereals in the diet. Among different alleviation strategies, genetic Zn biofortification is considered a sustainable approach. However, it may depend on Zn availability from soils. We grew Zincol-16 (genetically-Zn-biofortified wheat) and Faisalabad-08 (widely grown standard wheat) in pots with (8 mg kg−1) or without Zn application. The cultivars were grown in a low-Zn calcareous soil. The grain yield of both cultivars was significantly (P≤0.05) increased with that without Zn application. As compared to Faisalabad-08, Zincol-16 had 23 and 41% more grain Zn concentration respectively at control and applied rate of Zn. Faisalabad-08 accumulated about 18% more grain Zn concentration with Zn than Zincol-16 without Zn application. A near target level of grain Zn concentration (36 mg kg−1) was achieved in Zincol-16 only with Zn fertilisation. Over all, the findings clearly signify the importance of agronomic Zn biofortification of genetically Zn-biofortified wheat grown on a low-Zn calcareous soil.

An account is given of the results of two series of field experiments carried out at Rothamsted and Woburn in the years 1926 to 1936 on the effect of nitrogenous fertilizers on wheat. In the first series a comparison was made of the effects of early (March) and late (May) top-dressings, and in the second series a range of times of application from sowing to the end of May were tested.At Rothamsted, the increases of yield of grain produced by the nitrogenous fertilizer were small and rarely significant, but they were greater at Woburn. On the average of all experiments, the effect of the fertilizer on yield of grain was independent of the time of application. In individual years, variation in effectiveness between times of application was found, and this was correlated with the amount of rain falling in a short period after the time of application. At Woburn, the effectiveness of the fertilizer decreased with increase in the amount of rain falling immediately after the application of the fertilizer, but at Rothamsted the effects were less clear and appeared to be in the opposite direction.The effects on straw yield were relatively greater, and more consistent, than those on grain yield. A greater increase of straw yield was produced by early top-dressing (January–March) than by application at the time of sowing, and the increase declined steadily the later the time of topdressing. Shoot height was increased by the nitrogenous fertilizer, and varied with time of application in a similar manner to straw yield.

The research was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, to investigate the effect of time of split application of potassium on the yield of three transplanted (T) aman rice varieties. Rice varieties were BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan41. Potassium was applied at the rate of 80 kg K ha-1. Experimental plot size was 5m2 (2.5m ×2.0m). Four split application of potassium [K1= Control (No K application), K2= 40 g K plot-1 at 15 DAT (days after transplanting), K3= 20 g K plot-1 at15 DAT+20 g K plot-1 at 30DAT, K4= 10 g K plot-1 at 15 DAT+ 10 g K plot-1 at 25DAT+ 10 g K plot-1 at 30 DAT+ 10 g K plot-1 at 45 DAT] were considered as treatments. From the experiment it was found that split application of potassium had no significant effect on plant height, length of panicle, thousand grains weight. It was evident that two splits application of potassium i.e., 20 g K plot-1 at 15 DAT+20 g K plot-1 at 30 DAT with BRRI dhan41 gave maximum no. of tiller hill-1, effective tiller hill-1, grains panicle-1, grain yield and straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. But varieties differed among themselves in terms of yield contributing characters and yield, and BRRI dhan41 performed the best. Therefore, based on the findings of the present study, it may be concluded that for obtaining higher yield BRRI dhan 41 can be grown following application of potassium at the rate of 80 kg ha-1 in two equal split at 15 and 30 days after transplanting Res. A field experiment was conducted during kharif season 2015-16 to study the response of rice varieties to different sowing windows under Konkan conditions. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The main plot treatments were three sowing windows, viz., 23rd Met Week, 24th Met Week, 25thMet Week. The sub plot treatments comprised five rice varietiesviz., Karjat-5, Palghar-1, Jaya, Swarna and Karjat-2. Thus there were 45 treatment combinations. Results revealed that rice crop sown on 23rd Met. Week recorded significantly higher grain yield (5782 kg ha-1) and straw yield (6462 kg ha-1). Long duration rice variety Swarna recorded the maximum grain yield (5782 kg ha-1) as well as straw yield (6462 kg ha-1), which was significantly higher over all other varieties under study except variety Jaya which was at par. From the present investigation it can be concluded that kharif rice in Konkan be sown during 23rd meteorological week with rice variety Swarna followed by conventional variety Jaya, so as to obtain higher yield and economic returns

Micronutrients applications are effective for better crop production in calcareous soils because these soils are usually deficit in iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and boron (B). In Pakistan, most of soils are calcareous in nature. When tuberose is grown in such soils as a cut flower, its production is negatively affected. Therefore, a study was aimed to evaluate the effects of micronutrients as foliar sprays on cut tuberose production in calcareous soil. Micronutrients (Fe, Zn and B) alone and in combinations were sprayed on the plants after 60, 90 and 120 days of planting. The mixture of all these three micronutrients increased the plant height (95.77 cm), chlorophyll content (38.13 SPAD), number of leaves (79.63), leaf length (44.73 cm), fresh (111.64 g) and dry (16.16 g) plant weights, root length (15.13 cm), number of stalks (3.73), stalk length (79.03 cm), spike length (22 cm), number of florets (51.67), floret fresh weight (11.85 g), leaf Zn concentration (53.6 mg/g) and vase life (8.4 days). Fe + Zn enhanced the number of leaves (76.60), leaf length (45.83 cm), root length (15.05 cm), spike length (22.33 cm), and leaf Fe (128.18 mg/g) and Zn concentrations (55.02 mg/g). The Fe spray increased the leaf length (44.10 cm), days to flower initiation (142.47 days) and leaf Fe concentration (130.75 mg/g) in tuberose plants. Application of Zn improved the leaf length (45.87 cm) and diameter (1.32 cm), root (15.03 cm), spike (21.77 cm) and floret lengths (4.74 cm), floret dry weight (1.49 g) and leaf Zn concentration (57.5 mg/g). Foliar spray of B increased the B concentration (21.1 mg/g) in tuberose leaves. It is concluded that foliar application of micronutrients alone and in combinations improved the plant growth, flowering, leaf minerals concentrations and vase life of tuberose spikes. However, mixture of Fe, Zn and B was more effective as compared to other treatments. Moreover, current study encourages the foliar application of micronutrients in tuberose when grown in calcareous soils.

The experiment was conducted in the research farm at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) to investigate the zinc biofortification ability of rice grain at different doses of zinc fertilization. In this experiment two rice varieties (BRRI dhan28 and Binadhan-16) and five doses (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 kg ha-1) of zinc fertilization were used following split-plot design with three replications. Except 1000-grain weight and plant height, all other plant characters viz., tillers hill-1, panicle length and grains panicle-1 were significantly influenced by zinc fertilization. The treatment receiving Zn at 4.5 kg ha-1 (Zn 4.5) produced the highest grain yield (7.70 t ha-1) in BRRI dhan28 which was statistically similar with the yield obtained with Zn 3.0 treatments. The zinc control treatment (Zn 0) produced the lowest grain yield in both varieties. The concentrations of N, Zn and Fe were significantly and positively influenced by the Zn treatments. The crop varieties did not differ significantly in respect of N and Fe concentrations, but the grain Zn concentration was considerably higher in BINA dhan16 than in BRRI dhan28. The grain N content as well as grain protein content linearly increased with the rates of Zn application. Thus, application of Zn at the rate of 6.0 kg ha-1 demonstrated the highest Zn fortification in both varieties but maximum zinc fortification was observed in Binadhan-16 (24.1 µg g-1) in rice grain which was 12.2% higher over control treatment.

Seven wheat genotypes, one or barley and one of oats were compared for their sensitivity to sub optimal supplies of copper, and their ability to recover from copper deficiency when copper was applied at defined stages of growth Copper deficiency delayed maturity, reduced the straw yield and severely depressed the gram yield In all genotypes. Genotypes differed considerably in their expression of deficiency symptoms, and In then- responses to the rate and time of copper application. For all genotypes, the supply of copper needed for maximum grain yield was significantly higher than that for maximum shoot growth. Halberd wheat and Clipper barley were less sensitive to copper deficiency than wheat cultivars Gabo, Glaive, Pinnacle, Chotilerma, UP-301, Duramba, and oats cultivar Avon. Genotypes with relatively higher yield potential were less sensitive to copper deficiency than those with lower yield potential, and the ability of hexaploid wheal to recover from deficiency increased with the increase in the number of days to heading of the normal plants There was no apparent association between dwarfness and sensitivity to copper deficiency in wheat.

Scarcity of water resources in India is limiting the production of flooded rice crop. A field experiment was conducted in factorial RBD with sixteen treatment combinations including four rice varieties viz. V1: PR-115, V2: DRRH-3, V3: PAC-837 and V3: PR-121 and four fertility levels viz. F1: control (N0P0K0), F2: N, P2O5, K2O at 90: 45: 22.5 kg ha-1, F3: N, P2O5, K2O at 120:60:30 kg ha-1 and F4: N, P2O5, K2O at 150: 75: 37.5 kg ha-1 replicated thrice. The results revealed that among the different varieties, PAC-837 recorded highest plant height and number of tillers m-2 at all the growth stages. All yield attributes viz. number of effective tillers m-2, number of seeds per panicle, 1000-grain weight, spikelet sterility and grain yield, straw yield and harvest index significantly differed in different varieties and were recorded highest in PAC-837 which were however, statistically at par with DRRH-3 except grain yield and effective tillers m-2. Rice variety PAC-837 recorded highest grain yield of 45.65 q ha-1 and straw yield of 59.98 q ha-1. Among the fertility levels, number of effective tillers m-2 significantly increased up to 120: 60: 30 N-P2O5-K2O kg ha-1 thereafter nonsignificant differences were noticed. The grain and straw yield increased up to 150: 75: 37.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg ha-1 and recoded grain yield of 52.78 q ha-1 and straw yield of 73.85 q ha-1 with application of 150:75:37.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg ha-1. Nutrient application of 150: 75: 37.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg ha-1 recorded highest available N (238.16 kg ha-1), P (16.18 kg ha-1) and K (163.25 kg ha-1) in soil after harvest of the crop. Higher available nitrogen (235.28 kg ha-1), phosphorus (16.38 kg ha-1) and potassium (154.24 kg ha-1) n soil were recorded with PR-121 and lowest available major nutrients were recorded with variety PAC-837. This study would help to introduction and adaptation of new rice variety PAC-837 with application of 150: 75: 37.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg ha-1 under aerobic conditions in Shiwalik foothills region of North-Western Himalayas.

Arabidopsis halleri subsp. gemmifera, a close wild relative of A. thaliana in eastern Asia, is an important model species of Brassicaceae used to study cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) tolerance and hyperaccumulation in plants. To investigate the effects of soil factors on metal accumulation in this plant, we collected plants and rhizosphere soil samples from a limestone mining site on Mount Ibuki, and compared them with those collected from non-calcareous soil in Japan. Irrespective of the sampling site, all the plants efficiently accumulated Cd in shoot tissues. The plants growing on non-calcareous soil also accumulated Zn in shoot tissues, but shoot Zn concentration in plants growing on calcareous soils was below the level required for hyperaccumulators. The pH of calcareous soil samples was between 7.68 and 8.21. Total Zn contents were similar in calcareous and non-calcareous soils, but the amounts of Zn extractable by 0.1 M HCl were lower in calcareous than in non-calcareous soil. These results indicate that the properties of calcareous soil affect metal accumulation in plants.
