I Claim to have now shown that the zone of O. pilula as established in 1912 for Hants and the Salisbury area holds good in its broad features also for Sussex, the Isle of Wight, and Dorset, and that it is almost equally constant in some of its minor features, especially the way in which it ends in a bed 2 ft. 6 in. to 3 feet thick with a flint seam in the middle of it and enclosed by two marl seams. I am only prevented by a single section in Hants from setting this up as the universal rule in all sections I have seen. In The Stratigraphy I assigned pits Nos. 1065, 1066, and 1067, the last of which will be more readily recognized as Mottisfont Whiting Pit, to the zone of A. quadratus, because on examining them for the purposes of that work for the first time since 1892 I had failed to find evidence of more than a seam of O. pilula without any others of the associated fossils of the zone. At the time of that examination all the pits were in a most unfavourable condition. Since then I have been keeping regular watch on the Whiting Pit (No. 1067), and I soon found that the subzone of abundantO. pilula must be represented at its base, and then that the upper belt of O. pilula in that subzone must be exposed: but it was only this spring that I was able to fix the absolute position of the boundary between the zones of O. pilula and A. quadratus in the Whiting Pit, and at the same time, owing to developments in the other two pits, to identify the cinctus belt in the old face and the lower belt of O. pilula in the new workings (and probably also at the lowest point of the old face) of Pit No. 1066, and the lower belt of O. pilula at the base of Pit No. 1065.

Abstract Remains of the grand platform in the locus of Huangchengtai at Shimao site in Shenmu, Shaanxi was discovered and excavated during the 2018–2019 season. The south-eastern corner and southern buttress of the platform were revealed. The locations of the other three sides of the buttresses were also preliminarily confirmed. As many as 70 stone carvings were discovered from multiple contexts, including the surface of the southern buttress, the floor of the corridor, as well as the debris of the southern buttress inside the corridor. The relative chronology of this platform and stone carvings cannot be later than the late Longshan period. The absolute date ranges from 2000 BCE to 1800 BCE. Fieldwork performed at the grand platform encourages multiple archaeological discussions, including the settlement layout within the Huangchengtai area, the nature of the settlement, and its role as the core of the Shimao site.

Abstract: Curial e Güelfa (Milan-Naples, ca. 1445-1448), a chivalric romance written in Catalan an attributable to the great chamberlain in the Naples of Alfonso the Magnanimous, Enyego/Inico d’Àvalos, contains a suggestive cultural burden (Ovid’s myths satirically distorted; theophanies and Neo-platonic sets; explicit and/or implicit references to Caesar, Macrobius, Plato, Apuleius...), which is not absolutely superfluous nor dispensable, as some critic from the last century explained. Just the opposite: the way to recall the classics and re-present them cannot be explained without considering the contacts of the hypothetical writer with the Lombard and Neapolitan Humanism. On the other hand, the catalogue of Greek-Latin classics recorded in the varied personal library of D’Àvalos himself, the second richest in the south of Italy, demonstrates the coincidence of his taste and readings with the anonymous writer of the Curial and invites us to ratify the aforementioned attribution. Keywords: Curial e Güelfa, Enyego d’Àvalos, medieval catalan literature, chivalric romance, humanistic chivalry.

Two vases, a cup and an oinochoe, from Arkesine in south-west Amorgos are published for the first time. It is argued that both are probably Middle Protogeometric, one an import from Euboia, the other from the south-east Aegean; chemical analysis supports both attributions. Their implications for the early history of Amorgos are discussed.

Pagrindiniai žodžiai: Levinas, pirmoji filosofija, religija, metafizika, Kitas.RELIGIOUS AS A FIRST PHILOSOPHY ACCORDERING TO LEVINASNerijus ČepulisSummary The term metaphysics is ascribed to Aristotle, although it does not appear in his own texts. Historically it was introduced while sorting Aristotle’s works. In Greek t„ met„ t„ fusik@ means that which follows after physics. The author of the Metaphysics groups theoretical philosophy into three branches: mathematics, physics and theology. Theoretical sciences are more elevated than the other sciences, while the last one of the three is more elevated than the other two. If there were no substance that would superseed the nature, then physics would be the first among the sciences. If, however, there is sume unchanging substance, then the science of it undoubtedly will rise above all the other and will be called the first philosophy (filosof%a pr_th). Precisely this science has to look at the being as such,kaθ ’aÑtÊ in Greek.According to Levinas, the metaphtysical thinking seeks to think the being as radically separated, solitary and single (kaθ ’aÑtÊ), and this requires a special attention to the absolute exteriority and the other that refuses to be totalized. The metaphysical movement is transcendental, because as a desire for the goodness and generosity does not overcome and does not seek to overcome the primordial distance from the other. The metaphysical relation to the other for Levinas is a social one. The absolutely other first of all is the Other – the other person that is not bound with me neither by appropriation, nor by term, nor by any general level. Between us there is a distance separating the same and the other that is not to be covered. The possibility or the way to relate in this distance without abolishing or overcoming it is language. In the relation of the same to the absolutely other beyond the totality Levinas finds the essence of religion. Here religion coincides or at least closely relates to metaphysics. From this follows that religion can take the place of the first philosophy, without forgetting that the essence of both metaphysics and religion is the fundamental sociability. Keywords: Levinas, first philosophy, religion, metaphysics, the other.

In this paper, 3D-printed electromagnetic (or microwave) encoders with synchronous reading based on permittivity contrast, and devoted to the measurement of displacements and velocities, are reported for the first time. The considered encoders are based on two chains of linearly shaped apertures made on a 3D-printed high-permittivity dielectric material. One such aperture chain contains the identification (ID) code, whereas the other chain provides the clock signal. Synchronous reading is necessary in order to determine the absolute position if the velocity between the encoder and the sensitive part of the reader is not constant. Such absolute position can be determined as long as the whole encoder is encoded with the so-called de Bruijn sequence. For encoder reading, a splitter/combiner structure with each branch loaded with a series gap and a slot resonator (each one tuned to a different frequency) is considered. Such a structure is able to detect the presence of the apertures when the encoder is displaced, at short distance, over the slots. Thus, by injecting two harmonic signals, conveniently tuned, at the input port of the splitter/combiner structure, two amplitude modulated (AM) signals are generated by tag motion at the output port of the sensitive part of the reader. One of the AM envelope functions provides the absolute position, whereas the other one provides the clock signal and the velocity of the encoder. These synchronous 3D-printed all-dielectric encoders based on permittivity contrast are a good alternative to microwave encoders based on metallic inclusions in those applications where low cost as well as major robustness against mechanical wearing and aging effects are the main concerns.

The geographical distribution of 14 of the Rubus species in South Africa is presented. Chromosome numbers of nine of the species were determined: six for the first time, one is confirmed and additional polyploid levels are described for the other two species. It is demonstrated that the South African species of the subgenus Idaeobatus contain less diploid specimens and more polyploid specimens than their extra-African counterparts. This phenomenon could be attributed to hybridization between the subgenera Eubatus and  Idaeobatus.

Revulsion fed the Liberal Republican insurrection in 1872, and it paved the way for Democrats to regain control of the House of Representatives in the 1874 elections, for the first time in twenty years. ‘Dissention, September 1872–April 1877’ explains how this increased Democratic power reduced the support for Republican enforcement against corruption and disorder in the South. The non-emergence of a single commanding leader who could bind together the disparate shards of African American identity into a single movement also hindered progress for the black population. The Reconstruction governments contributed mightily to their own demise by their incessant, self-weakening infighting.

This article explores how in two short stories, ‘‘La primera vez que me vi’’ (The First Time I Saw Myself) and ‘‘El niñño perdido’’ (The Lost Child), Elena Garro draws on several discourses, contrasting the official one of the status quo (in post-revolutionary Mexico) with the alternative discourses of those who find themselves on the margins of society or in exile and hence in the position of ‘‘Other’’. The article also focuses on the way the marginalization of the female protagonists of the stories in some ways reflects that experienced by the author at a certain point in her life.

The fourth South Pacific Conference was held at Rabaul, New Britain, in the territory of Papua and New Guinea, from April 20 to May 13, 1959. Sixty-five delegates and advisers attended from sixteen Pacific territories and the Kingdom of Tonga. The Conference was divided into two standing committees, one dealing with social and health questions, and the other with matters affecting the economic welfare of the island peoples. For the second time in the history of the conferences, the delegates themselves elected the chairman and vice-chairman of each committee, but for the first time a woman was elected chairman of one of them, i.e., the social committee. The Conference proceedings were governed by a general committee, on which each of the six governments forming the membership of the South Pacific Commission was represented by a member of a territorial delegation; the chairman of the Conference, Mr. J. R. Halligan, Australia's Senior Commissioner on the South Pacific Commission, was the only European member of the general committee.

Introduction to fractions in textbook of Basic Education. Figures Dinamic or static representations?ABSTRACTVisualization plays an important role to understand the phenomena that underlie the learning and teaching of mathematics, however, it is not a matter for immediate and easy verification, on the other hand, it is a matter of information processing that describes complexity. This article explores the role that plays the visualization associated with the geometric shapes on the way in which some textbooks that are most widely used in the South-West of Colombia, are in charge of introducing the teaching of fractions during the first levels of basic education. It was observed in the analyzed textbooks an imbalance between the number of activities that promote visually powerful roles and those which power is controlled or non-existent.
