Proto-Industrialization and Demographic Change: A Thesis and some Possible African Implications

This article examines the possible relevance to Africa of the recent contribution to the history of industrialization in western Europe made by a group of historians of the family using statistical demographic techniques, especially ‘family reconstitntion’, developed by Peter Laslett at Cambridge. It is suggested that in particular the work of David Levine on eighteenth-century England yields a hypothesis about a link between ‘proto-industrialization’ and increased population growth which may be applicable, in a suitably modified form, to black Africa.The article focuses particularly on the mechanism of widened income opportunities for young people lowering the age of marriage. Levine concentrates especially on the lowering of the marriage age of women causing enhanced fertility per wife. The modified form of the hypothesis suggested for black Africa would focus more on the reduction of the age of marriage for men and on the transition from polygyny to monogamy, the latter especially producing increased fertility per individual wife.

This chapter investigates the conditions in Jewish society in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in the middle decades of the eighteenth century. The place of hasidism in the religious history of the eighteenth century ought to be reconsidered not only in light of the questions about the schismatic groups in the Orthodox Church raised by Ysander, but also in light of the general revivalist currents in western Europe. The social historian cannot explain hasidism, which belongs to the context of the development of the east European religious mentality in the eighteenth century. Social history does, however, point to some significant questions that ought to be explored further. One of these is the role of youth and generational conflict in the beginnings of the movement, and not only in its beginnings. A realistic recovery of the situation of the Polish-Lithuanian Jewry in the eighteenth century shows that neither the economic nor the security conditions were such as to warrant their use as causal or explanatory factors in the rise and reception of hasidism.

Why should intellectual historians care about children? Until recently, the answer was that adults’ ideas about children matter, particularly for the history of education and the history of conceptions of the family, but children's ideas are of little significance. Beginning with Philippe Ariès in the 1960s, historians took to exploring how and why adults’ ideas about children changed over time. In these early histories of childhood, young people figured as consumers of culture and objects of socialization, but not as producers or even conduits of ideas.

Introdução: O traumatismo dento-alveolar em vários locais do mundo tem alta prevalência na dentição decídua e permanente de crianças e jovens, com cerca de um terço destes sendo afetados. Objetivo: descrever a prevalência e gravidade de traumatismo dento-alveolar em crianças e jovens de 03 a 18 anos, assim como fatores associados. Metodologia: Foi realizado estudo transversal no Centro de Integração Familiar em Salvador, Bahia, que atende cerca de 400 crianças e jovens. Foram registradas informações sociodemográficas e história do trauma. O estudo foi realizado com uma amostra de 357 escolares. Resultados: A amostra tinha idade média de 8,3 anos. A prevalência do traumatismo foi de 15,69%, sendo a fratura de esmalte o agravo mais frequentemente encontrado, e sua etiologia principal a queda. Conclusão: O trauma acometeu o sexo feminino, as crianças mais velhas, de cor branca/outras, com overjet acentuado e com mais de dois irmãos. É necessária maior divulgação de informações de prevenção deste problema de saúde bucal.AbstractIntroduction: Dento-alveolar trauma in many places around the world has a high prevalence in deciduous and permanent dentition of children and young people, with about one third of them being affected. Objective: To describe the prevalence and severity of dentoalveolar trauma in children and young people from 03 to 18 years old, as well as associated factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Family Integration Center in Salvador, Bahia, which serves about 400 children and young people. Sociodemographic information and history of trauma were recorded. The study was conducted with a sample of 357 students. Results: The sample had a mean age of 8.3 years. The prevalence of trauma was 15.69%, with the enamel fracture being the most frequently encountered injury, and its main etiology being the fall. Conclusion: The trauma affected females, older children, white/others people, with severe overjet and with more than two siblings. More information on prevention of this oral health problem is needed.

I evaluate the effectiveness of financial markets in the early Roman Empire in this article. I review the theory of financial intermediation to describe a hierarchy of financial sources and survey briefly the history of financial intermediation in eighteenth-century Western Europe to provide a standard against which to evaluate the Roman evidence. I then describe the nature of financial arrangements in the early Roman Empire in terms of this hierarchy. This exercise reveals the extent to which the Roman economy resembled more recent societies and sheds light on the prospects for economic growth in the Roman Empire.

AbstractThis study departs from a juridical confusion regarding the age limit of marriage with other provisions regarding age. Article 7 Paragraph 1 of Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage, states that marriage is only permitted if the male has reached the age of 19 (nineteen) years and the female has reached the age of 16 (sixteen) years. Law Number 23 the Year 2002 concerning Child Protection states that what is called a 'child' is a person who is under 18 years of age. As for Law Number 26 of 2000 concerning the Human Rights Court, it is explained that an adult category is a person who is 18 years old. The Marriage Age Maturing Program (PUP) offers a solution, namely the ideal age of marriage seen from various perspectives is a minimum of 20 years for women and 25 years for men. Departing from this, this study seeks to explore why the need for an ideal marriage age limit according to Maqasid Sharia, as well as how to analyze Maqasid Sharia against the provisions of the ideal age limit of marriage in Mating the Age of Marriage (PUP). To answer this question, this study uses Maqasid Sharia theory with the basic assumptions of the theory, namely the protection of religion, soul, reason, descent, and property. The normative-empirical approach in this study refers to the study of the formal aspects of the Marriage Age Maturity (PUP) program.This study found that the existence of an ideal marriage age limit in Maqasid Sharia theory can have a variety of positive impacts when applied. The positive impact is in the form of increasing the ideal age of marriage; increasing family welfare; improved education; increased understanding related to the importance of the ideal age of marriage; and parents increasingly understand the importance of the ideal age of marriage when they want to marry their children. The provisions of the ideal marriage limit in Maturing Marriage Age (PUP) are at least 20 years for women and 25 years for men. Sharia Maqasid's analysis results in this study indicate that the ideal age provisions applied in the Marriage Age Maturing (PUP) program are the right solution in creating a good Sharia Maqasid family. The application of these provisions can regulate relations between men and women; look after offspring; creating sakinah, mawaddah, warahmah families; maintain lineage; maintain diversity in the family; set the pattern of good relationships in the family and regulate financial aspects in the family.Keywords: Maqasid Sharia, Maturity Maturity (PUP). AbstrakPenelitian ini berangkat dari sebuah kerancuan yuridis mengenai batas usia perkawinan dengan ketentuan lain mengenai usia. Pasal 7 Ayat 1 UU Nomor 1 Tahun 1974 tentang Perkawinan, menyebutkan bahwa perkawinan hanya diizinkan apabila pihak laki-laki telah mencapai umur 19 (sembilan belas) tahun dan pihak perempuan sudah mencapai usia 16 (enam belas) tahun. Undang-Undang Nomor 23 Tahun 2002 tentang Perlindungan Anak menyebutkan bahwa yang disebut dengan ‘anak’ adalah orang yang masih berusia di bawah 18 tahun. Adapun dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 26 Tahun 2000 tentang Pengadilan Hak Asasi Manusia, dijelaskan bahwa kategori dewasa adalah orang yang berumur 18 tahun. Program Pendewasaan Usia Perkawinan (PUP) menawarkan solusi, yaitu usia ideal perkawinan dilihat dari berbagai perspektif adalah minimal 20 tahun bagi perempuan dan 25 tahun bagi laki-laki. Berangkat dari hal tersebut, penelitian ini berusaha menelusuri mengapa perlunya batas usia ideal perkawinan menurut Maqasid Syariah, serta bagaimana analisis Maqasid Syariah terhadap ketentuan batas usia ideal perkawinan dalam Pendewasaan Usia Perkawinan (PUP). Untuk menjawab pertanyaan tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Maqasid Syariah dengan asumsi dasar teori yaitu perlindungan terhadap agama, jiwa, akal, keturunan, dan harta. Pendekatan normatif-empiris dalam penelitian ini mengacu pada kajian aspek formal program Pendewasaan Usia Perkawinan (PUP).Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa adanya batas usia ideal perkawinan dalam teori Maqasid Syariah dapat memberikan berbagai dampak positif apabila diterapkan. Dampak positif tersebut berupa meningkatnya usia ideal perkawinan; meningkatnya keluarga sejahtera; meningkatnya pendidikan; meningkatnya pemahaman terkait pentingnya usia ideal perkawinan; serta orang tua semakin memahami pentingnya usia ideal perkawinan ketika hendak menikahkan anaknya. Adapun ketentuan batas ideal perkawinan dalam Pendewasaan Usia Perkawinan (PUP) yaitu minimal 20 tahun bagi perempuan dan 25 tahun bagi laki-laki. Hasil analisis Maqasid Syariah dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ketentuan usia ideal yang diterapkan dalam program Pendewasaan Usia Perkawinan (PUP) merupakan solusi tepat dalam menciptakan Maqasid Syariah keluarga yang baik. Penerapan ketentuan tersebut mampu mengatur hubungan antara laki-laki dan perempuan; menjaga keturunan; menciptakan keluarga sakinah, mawaddah, warahmah; menjaga garis keturunan; menjaga keberagamaan dalam keluarga; mengatur pola hubungan yang baik dalam keluarga dan mengatur aspek finansial dalam keluarga.

Introduction. The study of marriage intentions in the attitudes of young people summarizes the experience of the past and create a prototype of the future of the family. The style of prenuptial behavior of young people is not isolated, but largely determines the state of the demographic structure of the whole society. The research novelty of the research is that the conceptual empirical analysis of the trends in the culture of family and marriage attitudes of young people and the prospects of its increase in the crisis of family values. Materials and Methods. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is represented by a set of concepts and theoretical approaches in accordance with the subject and the problem of the study, which required an appeal to the methodological tools of family sociology, psychology, pedagogy, cultural studies, sociology of youth, demography. When writing the work, general reasearch methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, interpretation, system method, secondary analysis of empirical data were used. The author’s empirical research was conducted by the method of questioning. A questionnaire survey of Saransk youth was conducted (300 people). Results and Discussion. The research has proved the contradiction of the simultaneous influence on the motives and attitudes of premarital behavior of young people of traditional and modern sociocultural norms, attitudes, relationships and relationships is empirically substantiated. Conclusion. Today young people face a choice of traditional foundations of the family and more radical orientations in the marital and family sphere. As a result, the relations between young adults in the system of premarital behavior are carried out in a difficult situation, which affects marital and family motivation, premarital attitudes and raises the age of marriage. Young people do not have rules of premarital relations enshrined, sanctioned by society and parents. Being the bearer of the innovative potential for the development of society, they have special opportunities for the implementation of their attitudes and needs in the field of premarital behavior.

Abstract Background Premature coronary artery disease is one of the most pressing global issues in modern cardiology. The aim of the study was to investigate the role of family history of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients aged < 50 years with myocardial infarction (MI) compared to that in patients aged ≥50 years with MI and to that in young people without MI (no-MI < 50). Methods The studied group (MI < 50) consisted of 240 patients aged 26–49 years with MI. The control groups consisted of 240 patients (MI ≥ 50) with MI aged 50–92 years and 240 healthy people aged 30–49 years without a history of MI (no-MI < 50). Results There were statistically significant differences between the MI < 50 and MI ≥ 50 and no-MI < 50 groups regarding the family history of premature MI/ischaemic stroke and the percentage of patients with ≥2 relatives affected (10.8, 2.9, and 3.7%, respectively; p < 0.0001). There was a statistically significant difference in the patient age at the first MI occurrence among patients without a family history of premature CVD, those with 1 affected relative, and those with ≥2 affected first-degree relatives (56.6, 48.6 and 41.8 years, respectively) as well as those with affected first- and second-degree relatives (56.5, 50.7 and 47.0 years, respectively). Conclusions A younger age of patients with myocardial infarction is associated with a higher number of relatives with a history of premature MI/ischaemic stroke. Thus, the family history of premature atherosclerosis involving not only first- but also second-degree relatives seems to be a valuable factor in CVD risk evaluation in young people. AbstractIt is a commonplace that adults who had access to the Bible as youngsters remember being told the tale of Daniel in the lions' den. It is easy to see why, and why this story has become a staple of Christian teaching: it is action-packed, distinctive, and reaches a conclusion that favours the apparent righteousness of its protagonist. However, Daniel's theological and historical consequences clearly extend far beyond the lions' den, so this article investigates the history of its limited pedagogical deployment by examining redactions of it in five popular eighteenth-century Bibles for English children. The theological issues in Daniel that captured the imaginations of its early adapters are ascertained, and evidence is found that the book's prophetic, visionary, and apocalyptic content has long-since been regarded as difficult for young people (especially in comparison to its apparently more straightforward court stories). Equally, in these problematic areas where the source's density raises opportunities for interpretative latitude, this essay contends that ecclesiological rather than theological responses to the text tended to surface, as Daniel's retellers—often obliquely—attempted to manage the book's indubitable complexity by domesticating it to their own subjective priorities.
