The influence of irrigation frequency on growth and yield of groundnuts (Arachis hypogaeaL.) under arid conditions

SUMMARYA study was carried out for 2 years in the arid zone of the northern region of the Sudan to investigate the effects of watering intervals on flowering, growth, yield and yield components of three groundnut cultivars. The variation in air temperature prevailing above the canopy through frequent and extended watering intervals affected the periodicity of flowering. MH 383 gave the highest pod yield and it was drought tolerant compared with Ashford and Turkish cultivars. Pod losses were smaller with longer watering intervals. Number of pods per plant was the yield component most affected by watering. Leaf area index increased with frequent watering and reached a value of 5·8. Net assimilation rate decreased at first, but later increased with the pegging of gynophores.

Most farmers’ practices broadcast sowing methods and productivity is less. Soil fertility maintenance is a major concern in tropical Africa which needs to tackle soil fertility depletion as a fundamental constraint. Similarly, the traditional way of planting tef reduces the amount of grain production, promotes competition for inputs, and causes severe lodging. This paper aimed to review the interaction effects between seed sowing methods and different types of inorganic fertilizers on the growth and yield of teff. In Ethiopia, recent research indicates planting method (row planting and broadcasting) affects the yield and yield components of teff. The review indicates the yield components include heading and maturity, plant height, first growth rate, number of tiller and panicle, thousand seed weight, grain, straw, and total biomass yields and harvest index high in Method of Row sowing compared to broadcast in Ethiopia but Days to emergence and panicle length were more affected by broadcasting. In economical acceptance, Row sowing was found to be economically acceptable with more income from grain yield than broadcasting.

Four glyphosate resistant corn (Zea maysL.) hybrids, a glufosinate-ammonium resistant hybrid, and a conventional atrazine resistant hybrid gown at Stoneville, MS in 2005, 2006, and 2007 with furrow irrigation were treated with their respective herbicides and their growth, yield, and mycotoxin incidence were compared with untreated cultivated plots. Leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter accumulation (DMA) were collected on a weekly basis beginning at growth stage V3 and terminating at anthesis. Crop growth rates (CRGs) and relative growth rates (RGRs) were calculated. Plots were later harvested, yield and yield component data collected, and kernel samples analyzed for aflatoxin and fumonisin. Leaf area index, DMA, CRG, and RGR were not different among the herbicide treated plots and from those that were cultivated. Curves for LAI and DMA were similar to those previously reported. Aflatoxin and fumonisin were relatively low in all plots. Herbicide application or the lack thereof had no negative impact on the incidence of kernel contamination by these two mycotoxins. Herbicides, especially glyphosate on resistant hybrids, have no negative effects on corn yields or kernel quality in corn produced in a humid subtropical environment.

The present study aimed to evaluate different irrigation scheduling strategies on capsicum growth and yield inprotected environment. The experiment was carried out at the Northeastern of Brazil. Five irrigation scheduling techniques to define water depth (weighing lysimeter, Hargreaves-Samani equation, Piché evaporimeter, tensiometer and soil moisture sensor) andtwo application frequencies (F1-once a day and F2-alternating frequency) were tested. A completely randomized factorial design experiment was installed in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, with eight replicates. It was observed that the variables stem diameter and leaf area index were influenced by the irrigation scheduling techniques, and treatments based on Hargreaves-Samani and lysimeter scheduling methods led to the lowest values. Fruit biometric parameters were significantly affected only by the Hargreaves-Samani treatment. It can be concluded that both irrigation scheduling techniques and frequencies influenced capsicum growth and yield. Furthermore, irrigation management techniques based on soil sensors caused the highest yields.

A field study was conducted during the Rabi season of 2009-2010 in the research field of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Dhaka. Six levels of GA3, viz. 0, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 ppm were sprayed at 18 days after sowing (DAS). GA3 treatments significantly increased plant height than the control plants. GA3 with 30 to 90 ppm significantly increased number of branches and leaves, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), leaf dry matter and total dry matter at different growth stages. GA3 at 30 to 70 ppm gradually increased crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) and declined advanced growth stages. Number of dry pods /plant, number of seeds /pod, 1000 seed weight, fresh fodder, fresh pod, dry seed yield and harvest index also significantly increased. A field experiment was conducted in 2013 and 2014 at the Agriculture Experimental Station of King Abdulaziz University to study the effects of water deficit treatments at different growth stages on growth, yield and IWUE on cowpea cultivars. Four water deficit treatments were applied T0 (no water deficit), T1 (at vegetative stage), T2 (at flowering and pod setting), T3 (at pod filling), T4 (at vegetative and flowering) and T5 (at flowering and pod filling). The cultivars ‘Balady’ under water deficit T1, T3 and T4 and ‘Cream7’under T1 and T2 produced the highest yield component parameters except number of pods/plant. The highest yield of dry seeds kg/ha was produced by the cultivars ‘Cream7’ under water deficit T1 and T3 and ‘Balady’ under T2. ‘Cream7’ and ‘Balady’ revealed the highest irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) under water deficit T1, T2 and T4. High seed yield of ‘Balady and ‘Cream7’ can be obtained by applying water deficit at vegetative stage (T1).

The present study aimed to the effect of different organic manures on the growth and yield attributes of cotton by conducting field experiments during rice fallow season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 at the Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai.. The cotton growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area index, dry matter production and monopodial branches plant-1 were significantly influenced by the application of 100% recommended dose of fertilizer through vermicompost (on equal N basis). Also application of recommended dose of fertilizer through vermicompost (on equal N basis) recorded significantly higher yield attributes viz., sympodial branches plant-1, number of bolls plant-1, boll weight and seed cotton yield (17.4 and 18.6 q ha-1 during both the years, respectively). Economic analysis also indicated that Insitu vermicomposting produced higher net returns with higher B:C ratio.

The main objective of this study was to quantify the influence of sowing date on growth and yield components of hybrid sunflower (Hysun33) cultivar in semi-arid zone. This experiment was conducted during the seasons 2014/2015-2015/2016 at the farm of the College of Agricultural Studies, Sudan University of Science and Technology, Shambat, Khartoum- Sudan. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications and three treatments. Different parameters were considered including plant height, leaf area index (LAI), filled sees number/head, head diameter, dry weight and yield components. The collected data were statistically analyzed. The results revealed that crop sown in May and July showed significant increase in plant height, LAI, head diameter, dry weight, field seed number/head, weight of 100 seeds; yield, and yield; compared to crop sown in March. However, crop sown in the second season showed an increase in growth and yield components compared to the crop of the first season.

SUMMARYThe effects of environment and genotype on growth and yield of cotton were studied in three experiments done at Namulonge, Uganda, from 1966 to 1969. Treatments were date of sowing, variety, fertilizer, plant population and water. Variety BPA66 sown in June at 4–10 plants m-2 outyielded other varieties, sowing dates and population densities. Compound fertilizer at l.25 t ha-1 increased yield by 15% and irrigation increased yield by 38%. The soil water deficit (CSWD) was calculated from meteorological data, and the relative water content (RWC) of the plants was measured. CSWD did not affect growth until a critical value (CD) was reached, which increased from 20 to 50 mm as the crop aged. When CD was reached RWC was s0·094 at dawn and 0·83 at 1400 h. Growth stopped when CSWD > CD, except while any rain, insufficient to make CSWD < CD, was being consumed. Days while such rain was being consumed and days when CSWD < CD were added to give the effective numbers of growing days which accounted for differences in numbers of mainstem nodes caused by sowing date and spacing, and for differences in plant dry weight and leaf area caused by sowing date. Variation in light transmitted by the crop canopy depended on leaf area index (L) alone; spacing, fertilizer and CSWD had no independent effects. The measured extinction coefficient was 1.1 compared with 0·9 predicted by de Wit's (1965) model. Measured value of crop growth rate (C) agreed with values predicted by the de Wit model for the vegetative phase. Spacing and fertilizer only affected C through L. During the reproductive phase C became much less dependent on L, and the form of the relationship changed. Some varieties including BPA66 had a greater net assimilation rate. Maximum C was expected when L ~ 3, but L was seldom > 2. Crops sown at current and previously recommended spacings had sparse canopies and did not fully use light available for dry matter production.

Abstract The study evaluated the effect of irrigation management techniques using anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) effluent on the growth and yield of rice. It was hypothesized that irrigation techniques with ABR effluent have a significant effect on the growth, yield of rice, water productivity (WP) and water balance (WB). The experimental setup was a randomized complete block design for 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, three treatments each with three replications. The treatments were alternating wetting and drying (AWD), continuous flooding irrigation (CFI) and wetting without flooding (WWF). The effect of irrigation management techniques was significant (P &lt; 0.05) for the 2017 season but insignificant (P &gt; 0.05) in 2018 on the yield. The effect of irrigation treatments on WP was significant (P &lt; 0.05). The effects were not significant (P &gt; 0.05) on the plant height, leave area index (LAI) and number of tillers per plant. However, the effect was significant (P &lt; 0.05) on the number of panicles per plant. The effects of irrigation treatments were significant (P &lt; 0.05) on number of irrigation, amount of irrigation, total water use and daily field WB. In conclusion, the result proved the acceptability of the hypothesis. AWD irrigation with ABR effluent should be encouraged among rice farmers.
