In this analysis, the translation of a liquid drop experiencing a strong non-uniform radial velocity has been investigated. The situation arises when a moving liquid drop experiences condensation, evaporation or material decomposition at the surface. By simultaneously treating the flow fields inside and outside the drop, we have obtained physical results relevant to the problem. The magnitude of the radial velocity is allowed to be very large, but the drop motion is restricted to slow translation. The solution to the problem has been developed by considering a uniform radial flow with the translatory motion introduced as a perturbation. The role played by the inertial terms due to the strong radial field has been clearly delineated. The study has revealed several interesting features. An inward normal velocity on a slowly moving drop increases the drag. An increasing outward normal velocity decreases the drag up to a minimum beyond which it increases. The total drag force not only consists of contributions from the viscous and the form drags but also from the momentum transport at the interface. Since the liquid drop admits a non-zero tangential velocity, the tangential momentum convected by the radial velocity forms a part of this drag force. The circulation inside the drop decreases (increases) with an outward (inward) normal velocity. A sufficiently large non-uniform outward velocity causes the circulation to reverse.In the limit of the internal viscosity becoming infinite, our analysis collapses to the simple case of a translating rigid sphere experiencing a large non-uniform radial velocity. By letting the radial velocity become vanishingly small the Stokes-flow solution is recovered.An important contribution of the present study is the identification of a new singularity in the flow description. It accounts for both the inertial and the viscous forces and displays Stokeslet-like characteristics at infinity.

AbstractAhmed Body is a standard and simplified shape of a road vehicle that's rear part has an important role in flow structure and it's drag force. In this paper flow control around the Ahmed body with the rear slant angle of 25° studied by using the plasma actuator system situated in middle of the rear slant surface. Experiments conducted in a wind tunnel in two free stream velocities of U = 10m/s and U = 20m/s using steady and unsteady excitations. Pressure distribution and total drag force were measured and smoke flow visualization carried out in this study. The results showed that at U = 10m/s using plasma actuator suppress the separated flow over the rear slant slightly and be effective on pressure distribution. Also, total drag force reduces in steady and unsteady excitations for 3.65% and 2.44%, respectively. At U = 20m/s, using plasma actuator had no serious effect on the pressure distribution and total drag force.

Using Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions together with radial velocity data and individual ages estimated from isochones, the velocity ellipsoid has been determined as a function of age. On the basis of the available kinematic data two different samples were considered: a first one (7789 stars) for which only tangential velocities were calculated and a second one containing 3104 stars with available U, V and W velocity components and total velocities ≤ 65 km.s-1. The main conclusions are: -Mixing is not complete at about 0.8-1 Gyr. -The shape of the velocity ellipsoid changes with time getting rounder from σu/σv/σ-w = 1/0.63/0.42 ± 0.04 at about 1 Gyr to1/0.7/0.62 ±0.04 at 4-5 Gyr. -The age-velocity-dispersion relation (from the sample with kinematical selection) rises to a maximum, thereafter remaining roughly constant; there is no dynamically significant evolution of the disk after about 4-5 Gyr. -Among the stars with solar metallicities and log(age) > 9.8 two groups are identified: one has typical thin disk characteristics, the other is older than 10 Gyr and lags the LSR at about 40 km.s-1 . -The variation of the tangential velocity with age(without selection on the tangential velocity) shows a discontinuity at about 10 Gyr, which may be attributed to stars typically of the thick disk populations for ages > 10 Gyr.

An extension of Martensen's method is described which permits an exact solution of the inverse or blade design problem. An equation is derived for the normal velocity distributed about a given contour when a given tangential velocity is imposed about the contour and from this normal velocity an initial arbitrarily chosen blade shape may be successively modified until a blade is found having a desired surface velocity distribution. Five examples of the method are given.

An improved Doppler radar radial velocity assimilation observation operator is proposed based on the integrating velocity–azimuth process (IVAP) method. This improved operator can ingest both radial wind and its spatial distribution characteristics to deduce the two components of the mean wind within a given area. With this operator, the system can be used to assimilate information from tangential wind and radial wind. On the other hand, because the improved observation operator is defined within a given area, which can be uniformly chosen in both the observation and analysis coordinate systems, it has a thinning function. The traditional observation operator and the improved observation operator, along with their corresponding data processing modules, were implemented in the community Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation analysis system (GSI) to demonstrate the superiority of the improved operator. The results of single analysis unit experiments revealed that the two operators are comparable when the analysis unit is small. When the analysis unit becomes larger, the analysis results of the improved operator are better than those of the traditional operator because the former can ingest more wind information than the latter. The results of a typhoon case study indicated that both operators effectively ingested radial wind information and produced more reasonable typhoon structures than those in the background fields. The tangential velocity relative to the radar was retrieved by the improved operator through ingesting tangential wind information from the spatial distribution characteristics of radial wind. Because of the improved vortex intensity and structure, obvious improvements were seen in both track and intensity predictions when the improved operator was used.

Abstract In this paper, a numerical study of MHD steady flow due to the rotating disk with chemical reaction was explored. Effect of different parameters such as Schmidt number, chemical reaction parameter, Prandtl number, Suction parameter, heat absorption/generation parameter, Nano-particle concentration, Reynold number, Magnetic parameter, skin friction, shear stress, temperature distribution, Nusselt number, mass transfer rate, radial velocity, axial velocity, and tangential velocity was analyzed and discussed. For the simplification of non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs) into the nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODEs), the method of Similarity transformation was employed, and the resulting partial differential equation was solved by using finite difference method through MATLAB programming. This work's remarkable finding is that with the expansion of nanoparticle concentration radial velocity, tangential velocity and temperature of the fluid was enhanced but reverse reaction for axial velocity. Furthermore, the present results are found to be in excellent agreement with previously published work.

Results of an experimental study of the interaction of a turbulent jet with a free surface when the jet issues parallel to the free surface are presented. Three different jets, with different exit velocities and jet-exit diameters, all located two jet-exit diameters below the free surface were studied. At this depth the jet flow, in each case, is fully turbulent before significant interaction with the free surface occurs. The effects of the Froude number (Fr) and the Reynolds number (Re) were investigated by varying the jet-exit velocity and jet-exit diameter. Froude-number effects were identified by increasing the Froude number from Fr = 1 to 8 at Re = 12700. Reynolds-number effects were identified by increasing the Reynolds number from Re = 12700 to 102000 at Fr = 1. Qualitative features of the subsurface flow and free-surface disturbances were examined using flow visualization. Measurements of all six Reynolds stresses and the three mean velocity components were obtained in two planes 16 and 32 jet diameters downstream using a three-component laser velocimeter. For all the jets, the interaction of vorticity tangential to the surface with its ‘image’ above the surface contributes to an outward flow near the free surface. This interaction is also shown to be directly related to the observed decrease in the surface-normal velocity fluctuations and the corresponding increase in the tangential velocity fluctuations near the free surface. At high Froude number, the larger surface disturbances diminish the interaction of the tangential vorticity with its image, resulting in a smaller outward flow and less energy transfer from the surface-normal to tangential velocity fluctuations near the surface. Energy is transferred instead to free-surface disturbances (waves) with the result that the turbulence kinetic energy is 20% lower and the Reynolds stresses are reduced. At high Reynolds number, the rate of evolution of the interaction of the jet with the free surface was reduced as shown by comparison of the rate of change with distance downstream of the local Reynolds and Froude numbers. In addition, the decay of tangential vorticity near the surface is slower than for low Reynolds number so that vortex filaments have time to undergo multiple reconnections to the free surface before they eventually decay.

Helmets reduce the frequency and severity of head and brain injuries resulting from bicycle crashes. To ensure that all bicycle helmets provide a certain level of effectiveness, helmets are required to satisfy certain standards of construction and material design before they can be sold in the market. Impact protection is the primary consideration of nearly every helmet standard. The general terms for a test for assessing impact protection involve shock absorption. A helmeted headform is dropped onto an anvil and the headform acceleration is measured. However, the test procedures of the existing standards do not properly assess the protection level of helmets against oblique impacts. To investigate bicycle helmets in a real accident scenario, this study simulated the full body of a bicyclist when free falling onto a road. This study considered the normal velocity (VN) of 5.66 m/s and tangential velocity (VT) values of 0, 5, and 10 m/s. Finite element analyses of helmet impact tests were conducted using LS-DYNA software. Moreover, the impact responses obtained using full-body and detached-headform models were compared under identical impact conditions. The analysis results obtained herein can be useful for evaluating helmet quality and guiding future developments in helmet innovation.

Experiments were carried out in a model air turbine stage to study the influence of rotor-stator rim cavity configuration on the ingestion of mainstream gas into the cavity. The three rim cavity configurations differed in their aspect ratio (height / width), the rim seal geometry remained the same. The aspect ratio was changed from the baseline ratio by installing an inner shell on the stator at an appropriate radius; this effectively introduced an axial-gap seal between the rim cavity and the cavity radially inboard. The initial step in each experiment was the measurement of time-average static pressure distribution in the turbine stage to ascertain that proper flow condition had been established. Subsequently, tracer gas concentration and particle image velocimetry techniques were employed to measure, respectively, the time-average but spatially local main gas ingestion and the instantaneous velocity field in the rim cavity. At low purge air flow, regions of ingestion and egress could be identified by inspecting the radial velocity distribution near the rim seal obtained from cavity gas velocity maps close to the stator. While the tangential velocity tended to be slightly larger for the ingested gas, a more clear-cut indicator of ingestion was the strong inward gas radial velocity. Information provided by ensemble-average velocity maps was not sufficient for identifying ingestion because the averaging smeared out flow details which varied from instant to instant. Velocity fields obtained from three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical simulation of a rim seal–cavity with the same dimensions qualitatively showed similar characteristics in the outer part of the cavity and provided insight into the complex flow in the seal region.

Flow through annulus is a widely solved problem in fluid mechanics because of its practical applicability in many areas. In oil well drilling, cuttings generated are of non-Newtonian nature which flows through an eccentric annulus with inner cylinder in rotation, considering the real drilling situations. In the present work, a comparison have been done amongst three differencing schemes, the second order upwind, the Power law scheme and QUICK scheme used in computational fluid dynamics solution algorithms, so as to find the best amongst them to solve transition flow for this case as well as in general. A three dimensional orthogonal hexahedral mesh with suitable boundary conditions & input parameters was taken as computational domain for eccentric annulus. This was solved with standard k-ω turbulence model and SIMPLE algorithm. Results were validated against the published experimental work of J. M. Nouri, et. al [1]. Radial velocity, axial velocity and tangential velocity of fluid were plotted along chosen planes and contours of molecular viscosity as well as turbulence kinetic energy were observed for comparison amongst the solutions obtained by three differencing schemes. Although in most of the cases close agreement have been observed between computational data, but as far as prediction of radial velocity is concerned there was surprising difference amongst the three schemes.
