SummaryOne hundred and fifty-six women with menorrhagia of benign origin were interviewed before hysterectomy, and re-interviewed six months post-operatively (n = 147), and again 18 months post-operatively (n = 148). Levels of psychiatric morbidity were significantly higher before the operation than after. On the Present State Examination, 58 per cent of patients were psychiatric cases before surgery, as against 29 per cent at the 18-month follow-up. Similar post-operative improvements were found on measures of mood (POMS), and of psychosexual and social functioning. Most of these improvements had occurred within three to six months after the operation. Both before and after hysterectomy, levels of psychiatric morbidity were high by comparison with women in the general population, but lower than in psychiatric patients. The pre-operative psychiatric morbidity had been mainly of long duration.

Context. In the currently debated context of using clusters of galaxies as cosmological probes, the need for well-defined cluster samples is critical. Aims. The XXL Survey has been specifically designed to provide a well characterised sample of some 500 X-ray detected clusters suitable for cosmological studies. The main goal of present article is to make public and describe the properties of the cluster catalogue in its present state, as well as of associated catalogues of more specific objects such as super-clusters and fossil groups. Methods. Following from the publication of the hundred brightest XXL clusters, we now release a sample containing 365 clusters in total, down to a flux of a few 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2 in the [0.5–2] keV band and in a 1′ aperture. This release contains the complete subset of clusters for which the selection function is well determined plus all X-ray clusters which are, to date, spectroscopically confirmed. In this paper, we give the details of the follow-up observations and explain the procedure adopted to validate the cluster spectroscopic redshifts. Considering the whole XXL cluster sample, we have provided two types of selection, both complete in a particular sense: one based on flux-morphology criteria, and an alternative based on the [0.5–2] keV flux within 1 arcmin of the cluster centre. We have also provided X-ray temperature measurements for 80% of the clusters having a flux larger than 9 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2. Results. Our cluster sample extends from z ~ 0 to z ~ 1.2, with one cluster at z ~ 2. Clusters were identified through a mean number of six spectroscopically confirmed cluster members. The largest number of confirmed spectroscopic members in a cluster is 41. Our updated luminosity function and luminosity–temperature relation are compatible with our previous determinations based on the 100 brightest clusters, but show smaller uncertainties. We also present an enlarged list of super-clusters and a sample of 18 possible fossil groups. Conclusions. This intermediate publication is the last before the final release of the complete XXL cluster catalogue when the ongoing C2 cluster spectroscopic follow-up is complete. It provides a unique inventory of medium-mass clusters over a 50 deg2 area out to z ~ 1.

A reinvestigation of the native iron bearing rocks of northern Disko has been initiated as a follow up of new regional mapping. A variety of hypotheses as to formation have been put forward since the work of Steenstrup (1882a); a bibliography is given by Bøggild (1953) and a recent review by Pauly (1969). In addition to examination of the nature of the deposits as such, the purpose of the new investigations is twofold. (1) To map the native iron bearing volcanic rocks which ean be used as stratigraphical marker horizons. (2) To investigate the possibie economic potential of segregations of native iron and sulphides found in these rocks.

BackgroundThe longer term prognosis of depressed patients treated with ECT is relatively unknown. We describe seven-year mortality and readmission risks for the Nottingham ECT series.MethodCases were defined and subtyped using the Present State Examination (PSE). Follow-up was naturalistic. Death and readmission were ascertained using the Nottingham case register.ResultsThe risk of death was doubled (SMR=1.99, 95% CI = 1.34–2.84, P < 0.001). The seven-year cumulative probability of remaining without readmission was 0.27 (95% CI 0.19–0.35), being 0.79 (0.71–0.87) at 16 weeks (relapse) and 0.34 (0.24–0.44) thereafter (recurrence readmissions). Multiple regression analysis showed that delusions predicted relapse, while endogenous subtype, absence of psychomotor retardation, and previous history predicted recurrence readmissions.ConclusionIndex ECT treatment predicted high longer-term mortality and readmission risks. PSE/CATEGO-based subtyping identified patients most vulnerable to relapse and recurrence.

This essay, following up on the recent Sy and Tinker [2005] and Tyson and Oldroyd [2007] debate, argues that accounting history research needs to present critiques of the present state of accounting's authoritative concepts and principles, theory, and present-day practices. It proposes that accounting history research could benefit by adopting a genealogical, “effective” history approach. It outlines four fundamental strengths of traditional history – investigate only the real with facts; the past is a permanent dimension of the present; history has much to say about the present; and the past, present, and future constitute a seamless continuum. It identifies Nietzsche's major concerns with traditional history, contrasts it with his genealogical approach, and reviews Foucault's [1977] follow up to Nietzsche's approach. Two examples of genealogical historiography are presented – Williams' [1994] exposition of the major shift in British discourse regarding slavery and Macintosh et al.'s [2000] genealogy of the accounting sign of income from feudal times to the present. The paper critiques some of the early Foucauldian-based accounting research, as well as some more recent studies from this perspective. It concludes that adopting a genealogical historical approach would enable accounting history research to become effective history by presenting critiques of accounting's present state.

SynopsisSelf-poisoning patients admitted to hospital were studied for persistence of psychiatric symptoms over a 3-month period and evaluated at 3 points in time with the General Health Questionnaire and the Present State Examination. Symptoms were identified which had a high or low prevalence at 3-month follow-up. GHQ and PSE scores correlated at 0·8. The implications of the study are discussed, particularly the earlier need for out-patient help in those who had a moderate or high number of symptoms at initial interview.

SummaryAs part of the Leicester electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) study, the role of ECT in schizophrenia was investigated in a double-blind trial. The Present State Examination criteria for schizophrenia were fulfilled by 22 patients, of whom 19 gave consent and entered the trial. Neuroleptic medication was restricted during the trial period. Patients were randomly allocated to eight real ECT or eight simulated ECT. At the end of the four-week trial period, patients receiving real ECT showed a significantly greater improvement when measured on the Montgomery-Asberg Schizophrenia Scale (MASS), the visual analogue global psychopathology scale, and the depression scale. The differences on the MASS and visual analogue global psychopathology scale were not due to improvement in depressive symptoms. The superiority of real ECT was not demonstrated at the 12- and 28- week follow-up, when treatment was not controlled.

During a period of one year information concerning social background, life events and diseases of children (aged 1—14) admitted to a paediatric department had been obtained. One year after this index hospitalization, information concerning the children's present state of health was obtained. Forty (13%) had been readmitted to hospital during the follow-up year, and the parents of 72 children (23%) reported that their child's present state of health was poor. A multivariate predictor analysis was performed. The associations discovered suggest 1) that the selected social or psycho-social factors do not appear to be of considerable importance for prediction of readmission to hospital, 2) that “poor health” in the children has a very complex prediction pattern, partly due to disease variables, partly due to indices of unfavourable family background.

Post-ictal psychoses have so far received little attention. The clinical details of 14 cases, diagnosed according to newly formulated criteria, were examined. Psychoses were usually precipitated by a run of seizures and occurred after a lucid interval. The seizures were partial complex with secondary generalisation in 11 cases. Catego analysis of the Present State Examination confirmed pleomorphic phenomenology. Follow-up details were available in all cases, for up to eight years. Psychoses tended to recur. Similarities with chronic epileptic psychosis are discussed, and a possible organic aetiology for post-ictal psychosis is proposed.

This research aims to analyze the economic potential in Oesena village, analyze the management progress of Oesena village, analyze the strength, the weakness, the opportunity, and the threat in developing the BUMDes of Oesena village. This research was the type of case study research that used descriptive qualitative approach. This research used the way of analysing the strategy and the meaning qualitatively. In deciding the informants for this research, the purposive sampling technique where the decision of the informants was done consciously according to some criteria and the informants were people who could give the informations about BUMDes in Oesena village to the researcher. There were two techniques for analysing the data such as the technique of data analysis and the technique of SWOT analysis. The research results showed that the development of BUMDes in Oesena Village was still unstable. It could be seen from lack of support for the economic potentials in this village, lack of participation or the follow-up from the BUMDes manager and also the villagers; The progress level of this village was still low and there was no significant increase; the strengths could be seen from the potentials of natural resources, weavings, and the villagers’ soft skills, the weakness could be seen from the limited potential of human resources, the lack of understanding and initiative of the villagers, the opportunities could be seen from the utilization of BUMDes as the economy source in helping the villagers to keep their needs that also could increase the PAD, the last next one was the threat that could be seen from the low rating and also from the lack of villager’s cooperation, there was also no strategy from the BUMDes managers. But the business unit, the saving and loan, the rent and tourism were known as the solutions for all the problems and as the solutions in keeping the villgers’ needs at Oesena village in Amarasi sub-district of Kupang district.
