SYNOPSISThis paper reports the factor structure of the symptoms comprising the GHQ when it is administered in the general practiāe service of a hospital. Two shorter versions are proposed: one with 6 scales and 30 items, and the other with 4 scales and 28 items. The latter is compared with the 28-item English version. Preliminary data concerning the validity of the scales are presented. In a comparison of the screening potentiality of the 60- and 28-item versions, no significant differences were found.

The present research aims to examine the factor structure of the Hellenic WISC-III in a sample of 50 children with learning disabilities. The results show the existence of a factorial model with two factors, one aggregating the Comprehension verbal subtest with four performance subtests and the other the Picture Arrangement performance subtest with four verbal subtests. This two-factor model includes loadings in two factors that relate to the sequencing abilities and the verbal reasoning abilities of children. These findings assert the clinical value of the intelligence evaluation in these children.

Three hundred and twelve patients suffering from painful conditions were admitted to a multicentre, double-blind controlled trial, conducted in general practice in which five analgesics—floctafenine (Idarac), paracetamol, aspirin, dihydrocodeine and pentazocine—were compared. Overall ratings of analgesic effect placed floctafenine first in rank order. Floctafenine was statistically significantly superior in effect to pentazocine but not to the other three agents as far as doctor ratings were concerned; and superior to both pentazocine and dihydrocodeine in the opinion of patients. Fewer patients experienced side-effects on floctafenine than on the other four analgesics and this difference between floctafenine and pentazocine, and floctafenine and dihydrocodeine was statistically significant.

The English version of Hand20 questionnaire was translated into Greek and cultural adaptation was performed. The validity was assessed in 134 patients with a variety of upper limb disorders. A comparison of Hand20 and DASH was also performed. All patients completed EQ-5D, Hand20 and DASH questionnaire. Test–retest reliability was assessed in a subgroup of 37 patients. We assessed the convergent validity of Hand20 by correlating its scores to DASH and EQ-5D scores. We also compared the completeness of Hand20 and DASH. We found no statistically significant differences in Hand20 scores between the 1st and 2nd measurements as well as a strong correlation between Hand20 and the other two questionnaires. There were also better rates of response and fewer missing data even in elderly individuals.

In order to evaluate the factor structure of the Emotions Profile Index (EPI) 217 first-year students accommodated in the school?s dormitory were examined. The data was analyzed with Beelzebub algorithm for comparative confirmative and exploratory component analysis. The results show that the empirical structure of EPI can be related with 4 bipolar factor structure proposed in the scoring key, although the relation is far from indubitable. The structure of hypothetical dimension Distrustful vs. Trustful has a solid empirical foundation, correlations between orthoblique and hypothetical factors of theoretical dimensions Gregarious vs. Depressed and Timid vs. Aggressive are acceptable while, on the other hand, the structure of the hypothetical dimension Controlled vs. Dyscontrolled requires revising, not only because the Adventurous trait is used to describe both of their poles but for numerous other reasons. The paper suggests a few ways of improving the characteristics of the test.

AbstractThe following study is aimed at investigating the construct validity of the 25-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 25) on a Romanian military population. The exploratory factor analysis was conducted on 434 male military participants, aged between 24 and 50 years (M = 34.83, S.D. = 6.14) and the confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on a sample of 679 military participants, of 605 men and 74 women, aged between 18 and 59 years (M = 38.37, S.D. = 9.07). Factor analysis of the scale showed it to be a bidimensional, rather than a multidimensional instrument, as the original five-factor structure was not replicated in this military Romanian sample. Moreover, EFAs suggested that a 14-item bidimensional model should be retained and CFA confirmed that this model fit the data best.

This chapter examines the sources of international law, ie the norms of international law that give validity to all the other international legal norms. These are enumerated in Art 38 ICJ Statute. Although quite dated, this Article is still considered as enunciating an authoritative list of the sources of international law. These are treaties; custom; general principles of law recognized by States; judicial decisions; and international theory as subsidiary sources. Particular emphasis is placed on custom, consisting of an objective element, the general practice of States, and a subjective element, the opinio juris, ie consisting of a legal conviction. There is no hierarchy between the sources of international law and both treaties and custom may exist alongside each other.

The aim of this research was to analyze the psychometric properties proposed by Balaguer et al. (2009) for the spanish version of Sport Climate Questionnaire (S-SCQ) in university athletes mens and women. The total sample has been composed by 432 university athletes, 169 women and 263 mens from Chihuahua, Mexico, with ages from 18-26 years (M = 20.40, SD = 1.89). The factor structure of questionnaire has been analized through the confirmatory factor analysis. This analysis shows that a onefactorial structure is viable and adequate for the total sample and the populations of mens and woman. The one factor structure, according to statistical and substantive criteria, has shown adequate indicators of reliability and validity adjustment. On the other hand, the factorial structure, the factorial loads and the intercepts are considered invariant according to the variable gender; however, differences were found in favor of male athletes in terms of their perception of support for their autonomy on the part of their coaches.

The Beck Depression Inventory was self-administered to 103 black men receiving outpatient treatment for alcoholism, and scores were subjected to factor analyses using a maximum-likelihood solution. Three meaningful oblique dimensions were identified as Cognitive-affective Impairment, Retarded Depression, and Escapism. The factor structure of the black alcoholic men was descriptively compared to those previously reported for racially heterogeneous alcoholic patients and for primarily depressed patients; the factors of depression for the black alcoholic men were comparable to those described for the other two clinical samples.

1. No systematic investigation on this subject has yet been attempted. The efforts made to group these materials in a series according to the charges generated when they are rubbed two at a time are of uncertain value because of (1) impurities of substance and surface, (2) indeterminate initial surface strains. Moreover, the general practice has been to rub the solids when held, one in each hand. A more reliable method is to mount the bodies in a mechanism which ensures that the same parts of them come into contact at each fresh stroke. In the present research, the elements, mostly metals, are those specified in the preceding paper. The textiles are made and cleansed as described in an earlier paper. Silk, cotton and linen in our experience behave reliably when fully cleaned. The other great textile material, wool, is more oily and cannot be readily cleansed; so is less trustworthy. We therefore at present confine ourselves to one animal and one vegetable textile, choosing the pure samples of silk and cotton specified in the above paper. Also filter paper, another convenient fabric, is used after being boiled in several lots of distilled water. As the silk and cotton are treated with boiling chloroform, we tried exhausting the filter paper in this solvent to see if such treatment affected the cellulose in any way; but no effect on the properties of the paper could be found.

One partner of a four man general practice in Essex used injection therapy to tender spots for musculo-skeletal pain. In a financial audit it was found that the prescription costs for this doctor were significantly less than the average for the other partners. It is speculated that the savings were due to effective elimination of musculo-skeletal pain by tender spot injection, thus reducing the need for analgesic and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication in these patients. If one doctor in every group practice nationwide were to adopt a similar, effective technique for treating musculo-skeletal pain, extrapolation of the savings to this practice suggest a national saving in excess of £95 million per year.
