The majority of samples processed at the National Ocean Sciences AMS Facility (NOSAMS) thus far were collected as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). Due to the long storage time (2–3 yr) required to analyze thousands of samples on the accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS), a test was designed and implemented to determine the effects, if any, of storage time on 14C concentration. We find no systematic offsets in AMS measurements made over a 5-yr period between a total of 16 replicate sets from surface and deep water collected at the same locality. Furthermore, the average δ14C value from the deepwater AMS replicates (-213.1%, std. dev. 7.3) agrees very closely with the conventional 14C results published for GEOSECS (-212.7%) from station 320 taken 20 yr earlier.A total of 73 WOCE shipboard replicate sets (162 AMS measurements) were analyzed with a mean precision of 4.3%. AMS results from 20 more shipboard replicate sets (44 AMS measurements) submitted as CO2 from the Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL) at the University of Washington were analyzed with a mean precision of 3.4%. These results suggest no significant difference between water stripping methods used in each preparation lab.To assess reproducibility, we calculate a pooled estimate of σ for replicates called s, which we use as an approximation of σTOT for a given sample type. The s for WOCE seawater replicates is 4.9% and 5.8% for SIL gas replicates. These numbers demonstrate an overall reproducibility of seawater AMS results at NOSAMS that is in line with reported errors. We take the difference between total error s and machine error as the overall standard deviation of combined uncertainties associated with preparation of samples and with AMS. For seawater samples processed at NOSAMS, σSPL is calculated to be 2.4%, and for the SIL gas replicates it is 4.8%.Reproducibility of samples prepared with an acid hydrolysis technique is demonstrated using 24 coral samples submitted in triplicate by Dr. R. G. Fairbanks of Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory. Seventy-two replicates were prepared and analyzed at NOSAMS with a mean reported precision of 1.2%. The pooled estimate s for the Fairbanks triplicates is 2.6%. We calculate a laboratory reproducibility uncertainty for coral hydrolysis samples of 2.2%.In 1993, NOSAMS participated in the Third International Radiocarbon Intercomparison (TIRI) Study. We report here 60 AMS analyses of the six TIRI test materials, five of which are organic carbon samples, to validate sample-processing methods for organic carbon sample AMS analyses at NOSAMS.

Abstract A box inverse of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment A10 (30°S) and A11 (nominally 45°S) sections in the South Atlantic Ocean was undertaken. The authors find a heat flux across A10 of 0.22 ± 0.08 PW, consistent with previous studies, and a heat flux of 0.43 ± 0.08 PW across A11. The A11 heat flux is lower than some previous analyses of this section but implies a plausible oceanic heat convergence (heat loss to the atmosphere) of 0.21 ± 0.10 PW. The difference is principally due to adding a cyclonic component to the circulation in the Cape Basin. As compared with the solution of other studies, the anticyclonic circulation in the surface and intermediate water of the subtropical gyre is weakened. The circulation of the deep water is cyclonic rather than anticyclonic; this is in better agreement with previously published circulation schemes based on examination of water properties. A southward freshwater flux of 0.7 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) at A11, consistent with previous inverse studies, is still inconsistent with the net Atlantic evaporation inferred from integrated surface climatologies. Results suggest a small gain of freshwater (0.2 ± 0.1 Sv) between the sections.

<p><span>This study investigates the impact of circulation changes on the distribution of radiocarbon in the ocean interior using simulations of the NEMO model forced by JRA-55 atmospheric reanalysis data.</span><span> We performed four simulations from 1850 to 2017 with transient or fixed boundary conditions for atmospheric ∆</span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C and CO</span><span><sub>2</sub></span><span>, forced with inter-annually varying or fixed neutral year JRA-55 reanalysis data. The difference between variable and steady-state ocean dynamics revealed the areas in the world ocean where the radiocarbon distribution is most affected by variable ocean circulation: the midlatitude North Pacific and North Atlantic, the midlatitude South Pacific and South Indian, and the Weddell Sea. The difference between fixed and transient atmospheric boundary conditions over the past few decades shows the impact on natural vs bomb </span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C. We investigate the potential drivers of variability from gas exchange, mixing in the thermocline, and interior transport. In general, the impact of circulation changes on bomb and natural </span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C shows similar patterns but the effect is larger for bomb </span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C. Compared to observed decadal changes in ∆</span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C between the 1990s and 2010s, the model </span><span>underestimates the changes in ∆</span><span><sup>14</sup></span><span>C and potential density suggesting that the model response to circulation change is rapid.</span></p>

Aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of storage time on platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and the stability of the fibrin clot over a period of time. Three blood samples were drawn from participants in sterile blood sampling tube. Two blood samples drawn in sterile glass tubes were centrifuged to form PRF. Third non-centrifuged sample drawn in EDTA-containing tube was used to measure baseline blood platelet concentration. After PRF had formed, it was removed from respective test tubes at different time intervals i.e. immediately after centrifugation- PRF A (Group A) and after 60 min of storage time in the blood collecting tube- PRF B (Group B). Residual blood from each group was tested for platelet concentration and compared with baseline reading. Similarly, PRF membranes were studied microscopically immediately after centrifugation and other after 60 minutes. Platelet concentration of PRF in blood and PRF membrane for both groups was calculated using the difference between baseline and residual platelet concentration- biochemically and microscopically. A paired t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p<0.005).

The baobab ( Adansonia digitata L.) tree is widespread throughout the hot and drier regions of tropical Africa . The baobab pulp from the tree is an important source of nutrients in Africa as it is a rich source of amino acids, iron, vitamins C, A and E. In some African countries including Zimbabwe, the pulp is used traditionally to cure various ailments such as dysentery, inflamed gums and as an antidote to poison . Baobab pulp has many food uses and consequently the aim of the current study was to determine the sensory properties of the baobab flavoured yoghurt during storage and consumer acceptance of the yoghurt . A trained panelist evaluated the appearance, consistency on spoon, consistency in mouth, odour, flavour and overall acceptability of the yoghurt on day s 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 of storage . In all the sensory evaluations, plain yoghurt was used as a control. The consumer panelists ( n = 150) evaluated taste, texture, colour, smell and aftertaste of the yoghurt. In general, the sensory scores of the baobab flavoured yoghurt and plain yoghurt decreased with storage time. The plain yoghurt had higher appearance scores from day 1 up to day 28 as compared to the baobab flavoured yoghurt and there was a significant difference (p = 0.01) in the scores of the yoghurts . On day 1 the consistency on spoon scores for both the baobab flavoured yoghurt and the plain yoghurt had the same value and from day 2 up to day 28, the plain yoghurt had the highest consistency on spoon scores as compared to the baobab flavoured yoghurt and the difference was significant (p = 0.01 ). The baobab flavoured yoghurt consistency in mouth scores were lower as compared to the plain yoghurt and the difference in the scores of the products was significant (p = 0.01). The odour and flavour scores of both the baobab flavoured yoghurt and plain yoghurt decreased throughout the storage period and the difference in the scores of the yoghurts was significant (p = 0.05). There was a significant difference (p = 0.05) in the overall acceptability scores of the baobab flavoured yoghurt and the plain yoghurt. Although the baobab flavoured yoghurt scores decreased with time of storage and the yoghurt had an astringent aftertaste, the consumer scores indicated that the baobab flavoured yoghurt was acceptable in terms of taste, texture, colour and smell .

Crassicauda spp. (Nematoda) infest the cranial sinuses of several odontocetes, causing diagnostic trabecular osteolytic lesions. We examined skulls of 77 Indian Ocean humpback dolphins Sousa plumbea and 69 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins Tursiops aduncus, caught in bather-protecting nets off KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) from 1970-2017, and skulls of 6 S. plumbea stranded along the southern Cape coast in South Africa from 1963-2002. Prevalence of cranial crassicaudiasis was evaluated according to sex and cranial maturity. Overall, prevalence in S. plumbea and T. aduncus taken off KZN was 13 and 31.9%, respectively. Parasitosis variably affected 1 or more cranial bones (frontal, pterygoid, maxillary and sphenoid). No significant difference was found by gender for either species, allowing sexes to be pooled. However, there was a significant difference in lesion prevalence by age, with immature T. aduncus 4.6 times more likely affected than adults, while for S. plumbea, the difference was 6.5-fold. As severe osteolytic lesions are unlikely to heal without trace, we propose that infection is more likely to have a fatal outcome for immature dolphins, possibly because of incomplete bone development, lower immune competence in clearing parasites or an over-exuberant inflammatory response in concert with parasitic enzymatic erosion. Cranial osteolysis was not observed in mature males (18 S. plumbea, 21 T. aduncus), suggesting potential cohort-linked immune-mediated resistance to infestation. Crassicauda spp. may play a role in the natural mortality of S. plumbea and T. aduncus, but the pathogenesis and population level impact remain unknown.

In civil engineering in Russia, trenching for utilities is currently under digging. To perform such works, it is necessary to use high-precision construction machinery, because inaccurate performance of works can lead to the break down of existing utilities, thereby affecting the residents of nearby houses and demanding the additional works for renewal.The most universal labour saver to perform construction works is hydraulic driven single-bucket excavators, which provide up to 38% of works. Therefore, to improve technical characteristics that affect the accuracy of the work performed is an important task.High requirements for the performance of works are defined by existing construction regulations: an allowable soil layer to remain is at most 0.05 m. To fulfil such requirements, an exact assessment of the working mechanism position and a trench profile is necessary.Examination of a manually operated digging process shows that an operator provides operations untimely, however an automated control system can solve this problem. Dynamic phenomena in the working mechanism have the greatest impact on the accuracy of the works performed.To assess the bucket digging edge position accuracy, a mathematical model of the working mechanism has been created. Based on the cycle scheme of the working process, the excessive displacements of the hydraulic cylinder rods under the load are taken into account. By the end of the cycle, the difference between the specified and obtained positions along the vertical coordinate has been 0.0892 m.A dynamic error of the hydraulic drive system of the working mechanism is considered as a sum of the error due to excessive displacements of the hydraulic cylinder rods and the error due to delay of the hydraulic drive, with the latter being calculated for the average time of delay taking into account the data available in the literature. The total error of the bucket digging edge position of the working mechanism is 0.1176 m, which is 2 times more than the value of 0.05 mConformity of all the links with specification requirements does not guarantee compliance with the required displacement accuracy of the bucket digging edge, and, thus, the soil layer to remain in the base of the trench can exceed the regulated value of 0.05 m.

The main content of the work consists of certain systematization and addition of longexisting, but eventually deformed and partly lost qualitative ideas about the role of thermal and wind factors that determine the physical mechanism of the World Ocean’s General Circulation System (OGCS). It is noted that the conceptual foundations of the theory of the OGCS in one form or another are contained in the works of many well-known hydrophysicists of the last century, but the aggregate, logically coherent description of the key factors determining the physical model of the OGCS in the public literature is not so easy to find. An attempt is made to clarify and concretize some general ideas about the two key blocks that form the basis of an adequate physical model of the system of oceanic water masses motion in a climatic scale. Attention is drawn to the fact that when analyzing the OGCS it is necessary to take into account not only immediate but also indirect effects of thermal and wind factors on the ocean surface. In conclusion, it is noted that, in the end, by the uneven flow of heat to the surface of the ocean can be explained the nature of both external and almost all internal factors, in one way or another contributing to the excitation of the general, or climatic, ocean circulation.

Abstract: Routine blood examination is the earliest blood test or screening test to determine the diagnosis of an abnormality. Blood easily froze if it is outside the body and can be prevented by the addition of anticoagulants, one of which Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA). Currently available vacuum tubes containing EDTA anticoagulants in the form of K2EDTA and K3EDTA. K3EDTA is usually a salt that has better stability than other EDTA salts because it shows a pH approaching a blood pH of about 6.4. The purpose of this research is to know the difference of erythrocyte index results include MCH, MCV and MCHC using K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA. This research is a cross sectional design. This study used venous blood samples mixed with K2EDTA anticoagulant and venous blood mixed with K3EDTA anticoagulants, each of 30 samples. Data were collected and analyzed using paired different test. Based on data analysis that has been done on MCH examination, p value <0,05 then there is a significant difference between samples with K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA to erythrocyte index value. Then on the examination of MCV and MCHC obtained p value <0.05 then there is no significant difference between samples with K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA to erythrocyte index value.Abstrak: Pemeriksaan darah rutin merupakan pemeriksaan darah yang paling awal atau screening test untuk mengetahui diagnosis suatu kelainan. Darah mudah membeku jika berada diluar tubuh dan bisa dicegah dengan penambahan antikoagulan, salah satunya Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA). Dewasa ini telah tersedia tabung vakum yang sudah berisi antikoagulan EDTA dalam bentuk  K2EDTA dan  K3EDTA. K3EDTA  biasanya berupa garam yang mempunyai stabilitas yang lebih baik dari garam EDTA yang lain karena menunjukkan pH yang mendekati pH darah yaitu sekitar 6,4. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan hasil indeks eritrosit meliputi MCH, MCV dan MCHC menggunakan antikoagulan K3EDTA dengan K2EDTA. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dengan desain cross sectional. Penelitian ini menggunakan sampel darah vena yang dicampur dengan antikoagulan K2EDTA dan darah vena yang dicampur dengan antikoagulan K3EDTA, masing-masing sebanyak 30 sampel. Data dikumpulkan dan dianalisis menggunakan uji beda berpasangan. Berdasarkan analisis data yang telah dilakukan pada pemeriksaan MCH didapatkan nilai p < 0,05 maka ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara sampel dengan antikoagulan K3EDTA dengan K2EDTA terhadap nilai indeks eritrosit. Kemudian pada pemeriksaan MCV dan MCHC didapatkan nilai p < 0,05 maka tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara sampel dengan antikoagulan K3EDTA dengan K2EDTA terhadap nilai indeks eritrosit.

Abstract: Chlorine is a green halogen-shaped halogen gas at normal temperature and serves as bleach, stain remover and disinfectant. Chlorine is now widely used for bleaching rice so that less quality rice looks like quality rice. Chlorine is very toxic and causes mucous membrane irritation, highly reactive and very powerful oxidizer. The purpose of this research was to determine the difference of chlorine level in chlorinated rice washed once, twice and 3 times. The sample in this study amounted to 11 samples calculated by replication formula. Each sample was treated 3 times, ie 1 washed once, 2 washed twice and washed 3 times. The samples then examined by iodometric titration method. Based on the results of the study using ANOVA test, 11 samples obtained the average value of chlorine after washed once amount of 0.0176%, after washed twice amount of 0.0111%, and after washed 3 times amount of 0.0052% with the value significance p = 0.03 (p <0.05) at 95% confidence level which means there was a significant difference between chlorine levels in chlorinated rice washed once, twice and 3 times.Abstrak: Klorin merupakan unsur halogen berbentuk gas berwarna kuning kehijauan pada suhu normal danberfungsi sebagai pemutih, penghilang noda maupun desinfektan. Klorin sekarang banyak digunakan untuk bahan pemutih beras agar beras yang kurang berkualitas tampak seperti beras berkualitas. Klorin sangat toksik dan menyebabkan iritasi membran mukosa, sangat reaktif dan merupakan oksidator yang sangat kuat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk mengetahui perbedaan kadar klorin pada beras berklorin yang dicuci sebanyak 1 kali, 2 kali dan 3 kali. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 11 sampel yang dihitung dengan rumus replikasi. Setiap sampel diberi perlakuan sebanyak 3 kali, yaitu 1 kali pencucian, 2 kali pencucian dan 3 kali pencucian. Sampel penelitian kemudian diperiksa dengan metode titrasi iodometri. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menggunakan uji Anova secara komputerisasi terhadap 11 sampel diperoleh nilai rata-rata kadar klorin setelah 1 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0176 %, setelah 2 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0111 %, dan setelah 3 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0052 % dengan nilai signifkansi p = 0,03 (p<0,05) pada tingkat kepercayaan 95% yang artinya ada perbedaan yang bermakna antara kadar klorin pada beras berklorin yang dicuci sebanyak 1 kali, 2 kali dan 3 kali.
