In recent criticism a perceived dichotomy has emerged between ‘new writing’ and ‘new work’ for the theatre. In this article Rosalind Haslett contends that this dichotomy is often reflected in the infrastructure of theatre organizations and theatre spaces themselves. Thus ‘new writing’ is seen to refer to a literary process which takes place in a conventional theatre building, while ‘new work’ tends to occur in non-traditional forms and spaces. The relationship between non-conventional spaces and the performance work that might take place in them has received some critical attention, but there has been less exploration of the ways in which theatre architecture can inform the processes which surround new writing for the theatre. Tracing the history of the National Theatre in London back to its origins, long before it occupied a building of its own, Rosalind Haslett explores the relationship between the policies and processes taking place within the organization and the physical and architectural development of actualizing its building. She suggests that, if the layout of a theatre building has the power to influence the kind of work and the modes of production which take place within it, the activities of the individuals and organizations residing within such structures can also drive architectural change. Rosalind Haslett is Lecturer in Dramatic Literature at Newcastle University. Her research interests include dramaturgy and literature management, theatre architecture, and theatre history.

La chute is a disturbing and ironic picture of modern man caught in a hell of his own making. Since the involved irony and ambiguity make it Camus's most difficult work, the book was initially misunderstood by a number of critics. To appreciate fully the meaning of the novel it is necessary to understand Camus's use of literary parallels and of allusions to his own experience and to the history of his time. Some of the basic literary and historical allusions have been noted in recent criticism. The following study will examine in detail these allusions and will attempt to clarify the meaning of La Chute by elucidating particularly the relationship between the echoes of Dante and the echoes of L'Homme révolté and the controversy following its publication.

The article analyzes the ambiguous motives and reasons that in the early 1920s, both at home and in the diaspora, influenced the literary personality of the writer in such a way that it involuntarily acquired the features inherent in the Smenovekhovstvo movement. For the first two years in Germany, where he fled to escape the unbearable conditions of life in Russia, Alexey Remizov retained the right to return to Petrograd. Due to this voluntary position of a ”temporary” emigrant in the history of the literary process of the early 1920s, a number of events of his creative life was captured in the landscape of the Smenovekhovstvo. The article presents the first analysis of Remizov's essay ”The Hook. Petersburg’s Memory” (1922), which, at first glance, supports N. Ustryalov's program aimed at organizing the return of emigrants to their homeland. Individual perception of the Smenovekhovstvo ideologemes is discussed using the example of the behavior of two writers in a specific ideological situation. One is the case of Remizov as a “temporary” emigrant writer in 1921- 1923, the other is the case of Prishvin as a writer who, after the October coup, took the position of an “internal emigrant”. Based on Prishvin's diary, the article reveals the tragic story of the perception of Remizov's essay “The Hook” (1922) and the attitude of the two writers to the concept of ”patriotism”, one of the main motives of the “return home” movement. The article offers a new perspective on the history of the relationship between the two like-minded authors and restores the context of their unknown correspondence from 1922-1923, fragments of which have survived in Prishvin's diaries, and in one letter that was published as Prishvin's essay ”Sopka Mair ” (“The Hill Mair ”, 1922). The essay was addressed to Remizov and contained an ”answer ” to the essay ”The Hook”. This article is part of a study of Remizov’s works, viewed as a reflections of individual experience in the history of the first wave of Russian emigration.

Este artigo tem como tema a relação entre literatura, religião e modernidade. A partir deste, desdobra uma problemática em torno da irrupção de uma autonomia crítico-criativa na formação literária brasileira, no início do século XX, e a relação dessa autonomia com a heteronomia estético-religiosa vigente naquele contexto. O estudo propõe desenvolver essa problemática a partir do papel que a obra poética de Augusto dos Anjos (1884-1914) tem para a história da literatura brasileira. O objetivo do artigo é reconhecer a originalidade de Anjos em relação ao contexto literário vigente e, num segundo momento, analisar o poema Viagem de um vencido numa perspectiva teológico-literária, tendo em mente a problemática da relação acima mencionada. Nas conclusões destaca-se as implicações teológicas dos elementos de originalidade da poesia de Anjos; a pertinência da mediação teórico-metodológica da teologia da cultura de Paul Tillich para essa perspectiva crítica; bem como a contribuição de uma abordagem que considere a temática religiosa para a compreensão do processo histórico-literário da poesia brasileira.Palavras-chave: Poesia brasileira. Augusto dos Anjos. Teologia da cultura.AbstractThis article reflects on the relationship between literature, religion and modernity. Within this theme, it addresses this relationship as an issue concerning the emergence of a critical-creative autonomy in the formation of Brazilian literary culture in the early twentieth century, and the relationship of this autonomy with the current aesthetic-religious heteronomy in that context. The study develops this problem from the important role that the poetic work of Augusto dos Anjos (1884-1914) plays in the history of Brazilian literature. The objective of this article is to recognize Anjos’ originality regarding his literary context and, secondly, it aims to analyze the poem Viagem de um vencido (Journey of a defeated man) in a theological and literary perspective, taking into consideration the problem previously mentioned. In conclusion, the article highlights the following aspects: the theological implications of the originality of Anjos’ poetry; the theoretical and methodological relevance of Paul Tillich’s Theology of Culture for this critical analysis; and the contribution of an approach that considers religious themes to understand the historical and literary process of Brazilian poetry.Keywords: Brazilian poetry. The article presents an experience in reconstructing the history of the Federation of Associations of Soviet writers (FASW) based on archived primary sourceson from the Department of manuscripts of the IWL RAS, which are being for the first time introduced into scientific circulation. The history of the FASW (FOSP) is the history of the struggle of proletarian organizations for the leadership of the entire Federation. The main method of manipulation was the Communist faction of the FASW headed by A.A. Fadeev, which was controlled by the press Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU(b). The Federation duplicated trade Union functions provided its members with housing, the opportunity to relax, travel abroad, and helped reduce taxes on the income of writers. The Federation was funded by the Narkompros. The history of the FASW shows that after the end of the NEP, the existence оf the institute of literature became directly dependent on the nature of the relationship with the only counterparty — the state with which the writers concluded employment contracts. At the end of the first five-year plan, the Federation was an extra link in the business communication between the writer and the state, which required a significant budget and refracted the voice of power with the interpretations of self-appointed ideologues.

AbstractThis article focuses on the relationship between property developers and architects in colonial Hong Kong in the 1920s to 1930s, identifying a successful collaboration within the architectural development company, the Crédit Foncier d'Extrême-Orient (CFEO). Benefiting from new plots of land made available on the Kowloon Peninsula and the opportunity to plan new neighbourhoods for both Western and Chinese clientele, the directors of CFEO negotiated with their in-house architects regarding land speculation and residential typology preferences while targeting the middle-class market. The company's demolished buildings left a crucial gap in the urban history of Hong Kong and China's treaty ports only recently uncovered through archival research by the author. Drawing upon in-depth primary data research and interviews with the architects’ descendants, this article probes into early twentieth-century residential development in Hong Kong, revealing how certain Western entrepreneurs and architects experimented with unique adaptations of architectural typologies suited to the local environment in the Chinese urban landscape.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.

Abstract. Background: Self-esteem is a major contributor to risk for repeated suicide attempts. Prior research has shown that awareness of stigma is associated with reduced self-esteem among people with mental illness. No prior studies have examined the association between self-esteem and stereotype awareness among individuals with past suicide attempts. Aims: To understand the relationship between stereotype awareness and self-esteem among young adults who have and have not attempted suicide. Method: Computerized surveys were administered to college students (N = 637). Linear regression analyses were used to test associations between self-esteem and stereotype awareness, attempt history, and their interaction. Results: There was a significant stereotype awareness by attempt interaction (β = –.74, p = .006) in the regression analysis. The interaction was explained by a stronger negative association between stereotype awareness and self-esteem among individuals with past suicide attempts (β = –.50, p = .013) compared with those without attempts (β = –.09, p = .037). Conclusion: Stigma is associated with lower self-esteem within this high-functioning sample of young adults with histories of suicide attempts. Alleviating the impact of stigma at the individual (clinical) or community (public health) levels may improve self-esteem among this high-risk population, which could potentially influence subsequent suicide risk.

Romanlardaki temel izlekler çerçevesinde göç süreci irdelenmiş, inceleme, göçmenlerin tanımlanmasında ve adlandırılmasında kullanılan Gastarbeiter (konuk işçi) Auslander (yabancı) kavramları ve Almanlar tarafından Türk kimliğine atfedilen çağrışımlar üzerinden yürütülmüştür. Göçmenlere yönelik politikalarda ve yaklaşımlarda onların nasıl tanımlandığının etkili olduğuna ve yazınsal süreçte de bu politika ve yaklaşımların belirleyici olduğu savından hareket edilmiştir. Bu noktada adlandırmaların, tanımlamaların göç olayı çerçevesinde biz ve öteki ilişkisi üzerindeki etkisine odaklanılmış; toplum ve yazın ilişkisi temelinde incelenen romanlar üzerinden göç ve göçmenlik meselesine dair çıkarımlar yapılmıştır. Bunlar arasında, ayrımcılık, kötü çalışma koşulları, hak ihlalleri, ırkçılık ve ötekileştirme gibi başat sorunların bu eserlerde merkezi konumda olduğu tespit edilmiştir. ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH Main Patterns in Migration Novels In this study, the novels published between 1960-1990 and dealing with the migration of workers to Europe were examined in a contextual context. The process of immigration has been examined within the framework of the basic lines in the novels, through the concepts of Gastarbeiter (guest worker), Auslander (foreigner) used in the identification and naming of immigrants and connotations attributed to Turkish identity was conducted. The argument is that how they are defined is effective in policies and approaches towards immigrants and that these policies and approaches are determinative in the literary process. At this point, the effect of naming definitions on us and the other relationship within the framework of migration has been focused; there are inferences about the issue of migration and immigration through the novels examined on the basis of the relationship between society and literature. Among these, it has been determined that dominant problems such as discrimination, poor working violations, racism and marginalization are central to these works. Thus, the basic themes that constitute the migration literature, which is the aim of the study have been reached and the factors that are effective in transferring the sociological and historical reality have been brought the fore.

The first chapter of Hieroglyphic Modernisms exposes the complex history of Western misconceptions of Egyptian writing from antiquity to the present. Hieroglyphs bridge the gap between modern technologies and the ancient past, looking forward to the rise of new media and backward to the dispersal of languages in the mythical moment of the Tower of Babel. The contradictory ways in which hieroglyphs were interpreted in the West come to shape the differing ways that modernist writers and filmmakers understood the relationship between writing, film, and other new media. On the one hand, poets like Ezra Pound and film theorists like Vachel Lindsay and Sergei Eisenstein use the visual languages of China and of Egypt as a more primal or direct alternative to written words. But Freud, Proust, and the later Eisenstein conversely emphasize the phonetic qualities of Egyptian writing, its similarity to alphabetical scripts. The chapter concludes by arguing that even avant-garde invocations of hieroglyphics depend on narrative form through an examination of Hollis Frampton’s experimental film Zorns Lemma.
