SUMMARYSevere fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) has been prevalent for some time in China and it was first identified in 2010. However, the seroprevalence of SFTSV in the general population in southeastern China and risk factors associated with the infection are currently unclear. Blood samples were collected from seven counties across Zhejiang province and tested for the presence of SFTSV-specific IgG antibodies by ELISA. A total of 1380 blood samples were collected of which 5·51% were seropositive for SFTSV with seroprevalence varying significantly between sites. Seroprevalence of SFTSV in people who were family members of the patient, lived in the same village as the patient, or lived in a different village than the patient varied significantly. There was significant difference in seroprevalence between participants who bred domestic animals and participants who did not. Domestic animals are probably potential reservoir hosts and contact with domestic animals may be a transmission route of SFTSV.

PurposeFunctional disorders caused by food intolerance (FI) are prevalent, thus it is important to analyze the FI of healthy people to common foods so as to guide the people for eating the healthy foods. The paper aims to discuss this issue.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 88,436 healthy persons including 60,902 males and 27,534 females at the age ranging from 20 to 70 years old were subjected a normal physical examination. In total, 14 kinds of food-specific IgG antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunesorbent assay.FindingsThe total positive rate of 14 FIs was as high as 64.16 percent. Five kinds of foods (egg, crab, cod, shrimp and milk) accounted for 84.51 percent of the total positive rate. In more than one kind of FIs, egg took the largest proportion than the others and the proportion was 58.54 percent. The second was crab with a positive rate of 56.19 percent. The antibody positive rate of any food in one kind of FIs was significantly lower than that in more than one kind of FIs (χ2=629.35,p<0.001). Also, younger age subjects displayed the higher positive rate than the older age groups. In addition, there was no significant difference on FI between male and female subjects.Originality/valueThe results would not only prompt us to pay more attention to FI in daily life, but provide theoretical foundation for the early prevention, diagnosis and treatment of related clinical diseases as well as guiding people healthy meals.

SUMMARYMosquito-borne Sindbis virus (SINV) cause disease characterized by rash, fever and arthritis which often leads to long-lasting arthralgia. To determine the seroprevalence of SINV and associated risk factors in northern Sweden, a randomly selected population aged between 25 and 74 years were invited to join the MONICA study. Serum from 1611 samples were analysed for specific IgG antibodies. Overall, 2·9% had IgG against SINV. More men (3·7%) than women (2·0%) were SINV seropositive (P = 0·047) and it was more common in subjects with a lower educational level (P = 0·013) and living in small, rural communities (P < 0·001). Seropositivity was associated with higher waist circumference (P = 0·1), elevated diastolic blood pressure (P = 0·037), and history of a previous stroke (P = 0·011). In a multiple logistic regression analysis, adjusting for known risk factors for stroke, seropositivity for SINV was an independent predictor of having had a stroke (odds ratio 4·3, 95% confidence interval 1·4–13·0, P = 0·011).

Background: We aimed to investigate the clinical value of detecting 14 food intolerances. Methods: A total of 312 patients with food intolerance enrolled in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Qiqihar Medical University (Qiqihar, China) from Feb 2016 to Feb 2017 were selected. ELISA was used to detect intolerance specific IgG antibodies for 14 foods (pork, chicken, beef, shrimp, fish, crab, egg white/yolk, tomato, mushroom, milk, corn, rice, soybean, wheat). Results: The highest average positive rate of the patients was 42.31% for the crab, followed by shrimp 21.15%, egg white/yolk 18.27% and milk 16.99%. The positive rate from high to low was crab, shrimp, egg white/yolk, milk, fish, corn, soybeans, tomatoes, rice, mushrooms, wheat, pork, beef, chicken. There were significant differences in the specific IgG antibody positive rates between shrimp, soybean and wheat in the skin symptoms group, gastrointestinal symptoms group, respiratory symptom group and nervous system symptom group (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in the positive rate of specific IgG antibodies between shrimp, crab and egg white/yolk in the adolescent group, the middle-aged group and the elderly group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The detection of food-specific IgG antibodies can help to determine which food intolerance caused the disease, and then adopt a fasting or diet method to avoid eating unsuitable foods and continually damaging the body, thus maintaining good health. The detection method provides a new idea for the diagnosis and prevention of diseases.

Neosporosis is a parasitic disease that occurs in sheep and is associated with reproductive failure. The aim of this study was to verify seroprevalence of Neospora caninum antibodies in 12 sheep flocks in Uberlândia county, Minas Gerais, Brazil, using Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA). A total of 334 sheep blood samples were analyzed and an epidemiologic questionnaire was applied for each farm in order to correlate with risk factors of neosporosis: gender, age, breed, abortion problems, contact with cattle and dogs, and presence of wild canids. The prevalence of Neospora caninum antibodies in sheep was 8.1%, with titers ranging from 50 to 3200 and 83.3% of farms detected at least one ovine reactive. There was statistically significant difference in flocks with abortion problems associated with the presence of Neospora caninum antibodies (p < 0.05).

Abstract Background To understand the clinical characteristics of and explore the risk factors for mortality in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). Methods Data from SFTS patients diagnosed by laboratory examination at Chaohu Hospital affiliated with Anhui Medical University from June 2017 to January 2021 were retrospectively analysed. According to the clinical results, all confirmed patients were divided into the surviving group (80 patients) and non-surviving group (20 patients). The two groups were compared in terms of general characteristics, clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory indicators and other aspects. The independent risk factors for mortality in SFTS patients were analysed by multivariate binary logistic regression. Results Univariate analysis showed a significant difference in age and the incidence of consciousness disturbance, respiratory failure, haemorrhagic manifestations, renal dysfunction, shock, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ≥400 U/L, creatine kinase (CK)≥1000 U/L, creatine kinase isoenzymes (CK-MB) ≥100 U/L, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ≥1000 U/L, serum creatinine ≥100 mmol/L, blood urea nitrogen ≥7.5 mmol/L and C-reactive protein ≥8 mg/L between the two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions Consciousness disorder, haemorrhagic manifestations, renal dysfunction, AST ≥ 400 U/L, and LDH ≥ 1000 U/L are independent risk factors for mortality in SFTS patients and merit close attention in clinical treatment to avoid fatal consequences.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) has been targeted for zero transmission to humans by 2030. Animal reservoirs of gambiense-HAT could jeopardize these elimination goals. This study was undertaken to identify potential host reservoirs for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense by detecting its natural infections in domestic animals of Chadian HAT foci. Blood samples were collected from 267 goats, 181 sheep, 154 dogs, and 67 pigs. Rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and capillary tube centrifugation (CTC) were performed to search for trypanosomes. DNA was extracted from the buffy coat, and trypanosomes of the subgenus Trypanozoon as well as T. b. gambiense were identified by PCR. Of 669 blood samples, 19.4% were positive by RDT and 9.0% by CTC. PCR revealed 150 animals (22.4%) with trypanosomes belonging to Trypanozoon, including 18 (12%) T. b. gambiense. This trypanosome was found in all investigated animal species and all HAT foci. Between animal species or villages, no significant differences were observed in the number of animals harboring T. b. gambiense DNA. Pigs, dogs, sheep and goats appeared to be potential reservoir hosts for T. b. gambiense in Chad. The identification of T. b. gambiense in all animal species of all HAT foci suggests that these animals should be considered when designing new control strategies for sustainable elimination of HAT. Investigations aiming to decrypt their specific role in each epidemiological setting are important to achieve zero transmission of HAT.

AbstractThe application of food-specific IgG antibody detection in allergy dermatoses was explored. 181 patients with allergy dermatoses were diagnosed from January to September 2014 and 20 healthy subjects were selected. Fourteen kinds of food-specific IgG antibodies were detected by ELISA method among all the subjects. The positive rates of IgG antibody of the patient group and the healthy group were respectively 65.2% and 5.0%. The positive rates of IgG antibody of egg, milk, shrimp and crab took a large proportion in three groups of patients with three kinds of allergy dermatoses of urticaria, eczema and allergic dermatitis, the proportion of which was respectively 70.2%, 77.8% and 71.7%. Among urticaria and allergic dermatitis patients with positive antibody, the positive rate of children was significantly higher than that of adults (p<0.05) while there was no significant difference between children and adults among eczema patients with positive antibody (p>0.05). Allergy dermatoses are closely related to food-specific IgG antibodies, and the allergy dermatoses patients have a high incidence rate of food intolerance; detecting IgG antibody in the serum of patients is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of allergy dermatoses.

Abstract Abstract 3921 Poster Board III-857 The t(14;18)(BCL2/IgH) translocation is the genetic hallmark of follicular lymphoma (FL). Circulating t(14;18)-positive cells can not only be detected in FL patients but also in healthy subjects without lymphoma. Several epidemiological and molecular studies suggest that these t(14;18)-positive cells might represent lymphoma precursor cells and are associated with known FL risk factors like age and geographical differences in lymphoma incidence. We used epidemiological data and blood samples of a population-based study to verify associations of FL risk factors and t(14;18)-positive cells reported so far and to test for new associations. The study of health in Pomerania (SHIP) collects epidemiological data, a basic health status and blood samples from 4310 randomly selected inhabitants of the study region in the northeastern part of Germany. We tested buffy coat-DNA samples from 4152 study participants (median age 50 years, range 20-81 years, 2100 women) by real-time PCR for the presence and frequency of t(14;18)-positive cells. t(14;18)-PCR results were evaluable from 2620 subjects, 1533 subjects were tested positive (58.1%, median number of t(14;18)-positive cells in positive subjects 3.9 per million nucleated cells, range 0.6 – 9299 per million nucleated cells). t(14;18)-prevalence was lowest in the age group 20-29 years (42.2%) and increased up to the group 50-59 years (67.0%) but did not further increase up to the age of 81 years. In accordance with previous reports there was a significant increase of the t(14;18)-frequency with age up to the age of 69 years (linear regression, p< 0.0001) in this study. In the SHIP cohort, t(14;18)-prevalence was lower in females compared to males (53.2% versus 63.5%, p< 0.0001), but there was no significant difference in t(14;18)-frequency between males and females. Smoking status (current, former and never smoker) had no influence on t(14;18)-prevalence or frequency. This study confirms the association of t(14;18)-prevalence with age and shows for the first time that the t(14;18)-prevalence in females is lower than in males. The later finding parallels the observation of a lower FL incidence in females. In contrast to previous studies, smoking was not associated with detection of t(14;18)-positive cells when the analysis was adjusted for age and sex. In summary, this study confirms that the prevalence of t(14;18)-positive cells in non-lymphoma subjects is associated with established FL risk factors. Thus our report adds to the accumulating evidence that circulating t(14;18)-positive cells in non-lymphoma subjects may represent a biomarker of FL risk. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.
