The measure of mathematics anxiety most widely used in screening and as a before and after measure to evaluate the impact of interventions is the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) devised by Suinn, Edie, Nicoletti, and Spinelli (1972). Alexander and Cobb (1987), Hunsley (1987), Richardson and Suinn (1972), Trent and Fournet (1987), Hadfield and Maddux (1988), Ferguson (1986), and Dew, Galassi and Galassi (1984), have used it; Wigfield and Meece (1988) refer to it as the most frequently used measure of mathematics anxiety; and Englehard (1990) recommends its use by future researchers. It was given qualified approval in a review by Hannafin (1985), and though Knapp's review (1985) was rather negative, he does concede that it has little or no competition.Suinn and Edwards (1982) produced a version of the scale for adolescents (MARS-A). As noted by Hannafin (1985), it is virtually indistinguishable from the original, the differences involving minor and infrequent word substitutions.According to Suinn (1979, p.2):The MARS-A can be used to screen individual students in order to plan their placements in special mathematics courses, provide counseling, or provide for intervention through programs such as desensitization for anxiety. Typically, a value above the 75% level would indicate the student is eligible for attention of this type, however a school may wish to develop its own norms or cut-off scores. The MARS-A can also be used as a measure for evaluating programs. It could be administered prior to a new counseling program or curriculum change, and readministered later to determine the effects of the program. Finally, the MARS-A may be used as a part of direct research on mathematics anxiety. For example, it would be a useful measure in studies which examine the role of curriculum content, parental characteristics, extracurricular activities, etc., influencing mathematics anxiety.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam which has a function of faith, social and economic functions. Muslims who can pay zakat are required to give at least 2.5 per cent of their wealth. The problem of poverty prevalent in disadvantaged regions because of the difficulty of access to information and communication led to a gap that is so high in wealth and resources. The instrument of zakat provides a paradigm in the achievement of equitable wealth distribution and healthy circulation. Zakat potentially offers a better life and improves the quality of human being. There is a human quality improvement not only in economic terms but also in spiritual terms such as improving religiousity. This study aims to examine the role of zakat to alleviate humanitarian issues in disadvantaged regions such as Sijunjung, one of zakat beneficiaries and impoverished areas in Indonesia. The researcher attempted a Cibest method to capture the impact of zakat beneficiaries before and after becoming a member of Zakat Community Development (ZCD) Program in material and spiritual value. The overall analysis shows that zakat has a positive impact on disadvantaged regions development and enhance the quality of life of the community. There is an improvement in the average of mustahik household incomes after becoming a member of ZCD Program. Cibest model demonstrates that material, spiritual, and absolute poverty index decreased by 10, 5, and 6 per cent. Meanwhile, the welfare index is increased by 21 per cent. These findings have significant implications for developing the quality of life in disadvantaged regions in Sijunjung. Therefore, zakat is one of the instruments to change the status of disadvantaged areas to be equivalent to other areas.

OBJECTIVEIn 2017, Michigan passed new legislation designed to reduce opioid abuse. This study evaluated the impact of these new restrictive laws on preoperative narcotic use, short-term outcomes, and readmission rates after spinal surgery.METHODSPatient data from 1 year before and 1 year after initiation of the new opioid laws (beginning July 1, 2018) were queried from the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative database. Before and after implementation of the major elements of the new laws, 12,325 and 11,988 patients, respectively, were treated.RESULTSPatients before and after passage of the opioid laws had generally similar demographic and surgical characteristics. Notably, after passage of the opioid laws, the number of patients taking daily narcotics preoperatively decreased from 3783 (48.7%) to 2698 (39.7%; p < 0.0001). Three months postoperatively, there were no differences in minimum clinically important difference (56.0% vs 58.0%, p = 0.1068), numeric rating scale (NRS) score of back pain (3.5 vs 3.4, p = 0.1156), NRS score of leg pain (2.7 vs 2.7, p = 0.3595), satisfaction (84.4% vs 84.7%, p = 0.6852), or 90-day readmission rate (5.8% vs 6.2%, p = 0.3202) between groups. Although there was no difference in readmission rates, pain as a reason for readmission was marginally more common (0.86% vs 1.22%, p = 0.0323).CONCLUSIONSThere was a meaningful decrease in preoperative narcotic use, but notably there was no apparent negative impact on postoperative recovery, patient satisfaction, or short-term outcomes after spinal surgery despite more restrictive opioid prescribing. Although the readmission rate did not significantly increase, pain as a reason for readmission was marginally more frequently observed.

Formation of aerosol from biogenic hydrocarbons relies heavily on anthropogenic emissions since they control the availability of species such as sulfate and nitrate, and through them, aerosol acidity (pH). To elucidate the role that acidity and emissions play in regulating Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA), we utilize the 2013 Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Study (SOAS) dataset to enhance the extensive mechanism of isoprene epoxydiol (IEPOX)-mediated SOA formation implemented in the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model (Pye et al., 2013), which was then used to investigate the impact of potential future emission controls on IEPOX OA. We found that the Henry’s law coefficient for IEPOX was the most impactful parameter that controls aqueous isoprene OA products, and a value of 1.9 × 107 M atm−1 provides the best agreement with measurements. Non-volatile cations (NVCs) were found in higher-than-expected quantities in CMAQ and exerted a significant influence on IEPOX OA by reducing its production by as much as 30% when present. Consistent with previous literature, a strong correlation of isoprene OA with sulfate, and little correlation with acidity or liquid water content, was found. Future reductions in SO2 emissions are found to not affect this correlation and generally act to increase the sensitivity of IEPOX OA to sulfate, even in extreme cases.

Abstract. Narcotics in unattended use can have a negative impact. The impact is potential to destroy the youth generation. It is necessary to hold the drug prevention programs, especially in schools as one of ways to prevent the widespread negative impact. The prevention can be through the role of parents, teachers and stakeholders as part of the community. The teachers’ role is divided into four sub-role, namely as educators, as advisors, as mentors, and particularly as problem solvers. The role of teachers certainly will not have power if it is not supported by the role of schools. Effots that are conducted by school stakeholder are as follow: a) compose the school rules; b) conduct inspections intensively and spontaneously; c) cooperate with related institutions for counseling and socialization; d) utilize extracurricular activities as means of prevention; e) integrate drug awareness into learning curriculum; (f) maximize the tasks as the effort of drug abuse prevention. Expectedly, these drug prevention efforts can be implemented by all schools as one of ways to prevent the destruction of the nation through NAPZA.

This paper aims to examine the effect of audit committee characteristics on audit report lag, and also explores whether this effect will vary between before and after mandatory adoption of IFRS in Saudi listed companies. Based on a Saudi sample of 388 firm-year observations from 2015 to 2018, the Poisson regression analysis shows that among audit committee characteristics, only audit committee financial experience significantly influences the timing of financial reporting. The result indicates a weak influence of audit committees on timeliness of financial reporting, which is consistent with the results of most of previous studies. On the other hand, the results show a strong impact of the adoption of IFRS on the context of that relationship, where the results show the impact of IFRS on audit report lag, audit committee quality and the association between them.
