SummaryAim: 67Ga citrate has been used long and successfully to diagnose and stage sarcoidosis. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) has been suggested as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for sarcoidosis imaging. This study aimed to analyze possible advantages of 18F-FDG-PET over 67Ga citrate scintigraphy during the primary assessment of patients with sarcoidosis. Patients and methods: Twentyfour patients (11 men, 13 women, aged 52 years ±12.4) with histologically proven sarcoidosis were investigated with 18F-FDG and 67Ga citrate. Equipment included a fullring PET scanner (ECAT EXACT HR+, Siemens/CTI, Knoxville TN, USA) and a double-headed gamma camera (ECAM, Siemens, Illinois, USA) for scintigraphy. The mean time difference between the two studies was 6.5 days (range: 5–8 days). Results: There was a significant difference in the detection of pulmonary and nonpulmonary sarcoidosis lesions between planar 67Ga citrate scans and 18F-FDG-PET images (<0.0021). A total of 64 lesions were detected with 67Ga citrate scans in the thorax and elsewhere with a mean of 2.6 lesions (4%) per patient, while 85 lesions were found with 18F-FDG-PET, with a mean of 3.5 lesions (4.1%) per patient. There was complete agreement between 18F-FDG and 67Ga citrate in thoracic manifestations in four (16.6%) patients, and in non-thoracic manifestations in five (20.8%) patients. The interobserver variability showed a kappa value of 0.79. Conclusion: 67Ga citrate and 18F-FDG are useful tracers for diagnostic evaluation of thoracic sarcoidosis. 18F-FDG seems to be more suitable for imaging the mediastinum, the bi-hilar lymph nodes, the posterior regions of the lungs and non-thoracic lesions. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify the role of both tracers in early diagnosis and staging of sarcoidosis, and to resolve questions concerning medical treatment and follow-up.

Synthesis of biocompatible near infrared phosphorescent complexes and their application in bioimaging as triplet oxygen sensors in live systems are still challenging areas of organometallic chemistry. We have designed and synthetized four novel iridium [Ir(N^C)2(N^N)]+ complexes (N^C–benzothienyl-phenanthridine based cyclometalated ligand; N^N–pyridin-phenanthroimidazol diimine chelate), decorated with oligo(ethylene glycol) groups to impart these emitters’ solubility in aqueous media, biocompatibility, and to shield them from interaction with bio-environment. These substances were fully characterized using NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass-spectrometry. The complexes exhibited excitation close to the biological “window of transparency”, NIR emission at 730 nm, and quantum yields up to 12% in water. The compounds with higher degree of the chromophore shielding possess low toxicity, bleaching stability, absence of sensitivity to variations of pH, serum, and complex concentrations. The properties of these probes as oxygen sensors for biological systems have been studied by using phosphorescence lifetime imaging experiments in different cell cultures. The results showed essential lifetime response onto variations in oxygen concentration (2.0–2.3 μs under normoxia and 2.8–3.0 μs under hypoxia conditions) in complete agreement with the calibration curves obtained “in cuvette”. The data obtained indicate that these emitters can be used as semi-quantitative oxygen sensors in biological systems.

It is well known that the cathodic protection of structures in seawater is accompanied by the formation of calcareous deposits on them. In current study, we consider the physicochemical modelling of the formation of the deposit composition against cathode current density in seawater. The reliability of the model representations is confirmed by direct experiments. The work also studied the protective properties of the deposits with a different composition for low-alloy steels in natural sea water. It has been shown that the deposits of pure Mg(OH)2 and the deposits of CaCO3 + Mg(OH)2 had better protective ability against corrosion than the deposits of pure CaCO3. However, the deposits of Mg(OH)2 dissolved faster than the deposits of CaCO3 and CaCO3 + Mg(OH)2. Theoretical concepts and experiments on the laws governing the formation of the deposits and their protective properties are in complete agreement with each other. This allows to use the obtained patterns in the cathodic protection of structures in sea water using solar panels, forming standard deviations with predetermined protective properties in the daytime.

The first part of this study of Mill sought to show how much less radical he was on the subject of Irish land reform than is often supposed. In the earlier editions of the Principles of Political Economy from 1848 to 1857 there were passages which constituted a terrible indictment of landlordism, and insisted on the need for legislation to convert the tenant farmers into joint owners of their holdings: but in another passage this harsh criticism was substantially withdrawn, and the demand for fixity of tenure effectively retracted. Although they continued to reproduce the criticism and the call for a drastic measure, the editions of 1862 and 1865 were more moderate still in their conclusions on Irish land. With the progress of the changes in the economy and society set in motion by the Great Famine, Mill became more strongly convinced that the country should be left to evolve slowly under the existing law of tenure, only slightly amended. One cannot imagine Mill saying, ‘tenant-right…is equivalent to landlords' wrong’: but he and Palmerston were none the less in nearly complete agreement by 1865 on the degree of laissez-faire that was desirable in Ireland. For all his strictures upon aristocratic misgovernment and middle-class prejudice, Mill was too warm an admirer of British institutions to want to undermine their social basis over a wide area of the United Kingdom. The second part of this study deals with his action and his motives, in briefly advocating, without any reservations this time, the revolutionary land legislation from which he had always previously shrunk, despite his brave words written for the earlier editions of the Principles.

AbstractMinimal STO-NG (N = 3, 4 and 6 ) basis set non-empirical HF SCF MO calculations have been performed for topologically related 1,4-dibora-2,3-diazarine (S) and 1,4-dibora-2,5-diazarine (T). The equilibrium geometries of these S and T isomers have been computed by symmetry-constraint geometry optimizations using the STO-3G basis set. The calculations lead to the prediction that: i) the T isomer is about 48 kJ/mole less stable than the S isomer, and ii) the π -MO energy patterns of the S and T isomers are in complete agreement with the TEMO theorem, while the bonding σ-MO eigenvalues exhibit four inversion points.

This study compared measurements of hands, feet, and hemi-faces taken from original and mirror-reversed photographs to determine whether a hemispace-bias exists in size measurements. Posers were adult right- and left-handers (50% female). In 80% of the measurement comparisons (total N = 84), there was complete agreement; there were no instances of right-left reversals among the discrepant comparisons. The side of the body measured as larger was independent of the side of space in which it appeared The lack of such bias in physical measurements is discrepant with data suggesting a left-hemispace preference in psychological judgments of visual material.

We compared the diagnoses made by one dermatologist via telemedicine with those of another dermatologist made in a face-to-face consultation. The patients first underwent a teledermatology consultation and then a face-to-face consultation. A general practitioner was present with the patient in the videoconference studio. Videoconferencing equipment connected at 384 kbit/s was used. The doctor-patient relationship and the satisfaction of the patients and dermatologists in the two settings were assessed, as well as technical conditions during the videoconferences. There were 121 patients, with a mean age of 40 years (range 17-82 years). There was a high degree of concordance between the two sets of diagnoses, with 72% complete agreement and 14% partial agreement between the two dermatologists. A total of 116 patients (96% of those included) completed a questionnaire. Both the patients and the dermatologists were in general satisfied with the videoconferences. Videoconferencing with a participating general practitioner may be useful in dermatology, but the technique should be used only for selected patients.

The force on a charged solid particle (of general shape) suspended in a flowing polar fluid (e.g. an aqueous electrolyte solution) in the presence of a solid bounding wall (of general shape) is obtained for the situation in which the electrical double-layer thickness is very much smaller than the particle size (and the distance between particle and wall). The very general results so obtained are applied to the sedimentation of a charged spherical particle in an unbounded polar fluid (with no walls present) for which the drag force is found to be in complete agreement with Ohshima et al. (1984). However, there is disagreement between the present results and those obtained in a number of published papers owing to incorrect assumptions being made in the latter as to what physical mechanism gives rise to the dominant contribution to the electroviscous force on the particle.

The complete ligand field -Coulomb repulsion -spin orbit interaction matrices have been derived for the d4 and d6 electron configurations within octahedral (Oh) and tetrahedral (Td) symmetry. The calculations were perform ed in both the weak-field and strong-field coupling schemes and complete agreement of the results was achieved. The energy matrices are parametrically dependent on ligand field (Dq), Coulomb repulsion (B, C) and spin-orbit interaction (ζ). Correct energy diagrams are presentend which display the splittings by spin-orbit perturbation as well as the effect of configuration mixing. Applications to the interpretation of optical spectral data, to the detailed behavior at the crossover of ground terms, and to complete studies in magnetism are pointed out.
