Abstract Poverty entails more than a scarcity of material resources—it also involves a shortage of time. To examine the causal benefits of reducing time poverty, we conducted a longitudinal field experiment over six consecutive weeks in an urban slum in Kenya with a sample of working mothers, a population who is especially likely to experience severe time poverty. Participants received vouchers for services designed to reduce their burden of unpaid labor. We compared the effect of these vouchers against equivalently valued unconditional cash transfers (UCTs) and a neutral control condition. In contrast to our pre-registered hypotheses, a pre-registered Bayesian ANCOVA indicated that the time-saving, UCT, and control conditions led to similar increases in subjective well-being, reductions in perceived stress, and decreases in relationship conflict (Cohen’s d’s ranged from 0.25 to 0.85 during the treatment weeks and from 0.21 to 0.36 at the endline). Exploratory analyses revealed that the time-saving vouchers and UCTs produced these benefits through distinct psychological pathways. We conclude by discussing the implications of these results for economic development initiatives. This study investigates the effects of psychodrama on adults’ anxiety and subjective well-being levels. A pre/post-test experimental pattern is used with experimental and control groups. The study sample consists of 24 non-thesis master’s program students at Gaziantep University, Human Psychology, and Communication. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Subjective Well-Being Scale were applied as a pre-test to the experimental and control groups. The psychodrama group practice was performed with the experimental group once a week for eleven weeks, 90 minutes per session, while the control group did not receive any practice. After the application, the post-test was administered to both groups. The data were analyzed with SPSS 23 statistical program. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate the difference between the experimental and control group, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was applied for the changes within the experimental group. The findings indicate that the individuals’ anxiety level in the experimental group significantly decreased compared to the control group. There was no significant difference between subjective well-being in the experimental and control group for pre-test and post-test applications.

Over the past decade there has been a call to action for researchers to explore children’s subjectivities in the context of well-being. How children understand and experience well-being in a Canadian context was examined in this study. Twenty-one children between 8 and 12 years of age participated in semi-structured interviews facilitated by the Life Story Board™. Three main themes emerged: (1) freedom and control, (2) child rights and social supports, and (3) children’s participation as social actors. Results from this study highlighted the importance of children needing to feel heard by parents and teachers; children being recognised as rights-holders with opportunities to actualise their rights; and children having meaningful opportunities to participate in matters which concerns them in everyday life as important components of subjective well-being. Results may serve to inform child-serving professionals, policymakers, and parents and guardians about how school-aged children from this Canadian context conceptualize and experience well-being.

Using a sample of Chinese adults over the age of 50 from wave 1 of the WHO Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (n = 13,367), we investigated the relationship between living arrangements and subjective well-being (SWB) in regard to life satisfaction, happiness, and control. We also looked at the moderating role of resources, proxied by income and hukou status. Multivariate regression results indicate that living only with a spouse was significantly associated with better SWB. Multigenerational living arrangements may not always promote SWB, particularly when resources are constrained. Yet, results also underscore the importance of daughters and daughters-in-law in promoting SWB among older adults. Older adults in rural areas had better SWB, including greater life satisfaction if living with grandchildren only, compared to their urban peers living with a spouse only. Findings suggest that context matters in the association between living arrangements and older adults’ SWB.

<p>Serious leisure (SL) is defined as an intensive, long-term free-time activity which has deep meaning for an individual and generates its own rewards without external incentives. SL has been studied intensively, yet studies on the mutual effects of an individual’s work and SL are scanty, especially when music is either the work or the SL. Our research addressed the connection between work and SL with both musicians and non-musicians. The data consisted of nine interviews. Four of the participants were professional musicians with various SLs (acting, woodwork, handicrafts, and urban culture). The other five (an architect, a librarian, two directors, and a project manager), conversely, had music as their SL. Qualitative content analysis of the data was conducted, and we analysed the data in relation to psychological recovery experiences (psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery and control), using the concepts of segmentation, spillover and compensation. The data were classified into three thematic clusters 1) Participants’ manner of talking about SL, 2) Aspects of SL, and 3) SL and work with further subdivisions into themes and categories. Our data did not show any difference between comments from the two participant groups. SL had positive effects on subjective well-being, notions of identity, and working abilities. It stimulated psychological recovery and gave meaning and content to the participants’ lives. We suggest that in today’s busy work life, employers should take advantage of SL and its positive effects.</p><p> </p>

The key objective of a present article is to propose and explain “Intentional Enrichment technique” that provides activities to enhance the level of Subjective Well-being and to examine the study that is carried out to test the effectiveness of the technique. “Intentional Enrichment technique” assists individual to take up his responsibility of own happiness and actively try for it. The technique takes support of Fordyce 14 Happiness Fundamentals (1977, 1983) and Keyes’s model of mental health (Keyes and Lopez, 2002). According to the technique, efforts for Intentional Enrichment can be divided into five ingredients i. e. Enrichment of the Self, Enrichment of Thoughts, Enrichment of Relationships, Enrichment of the Work, Enrichment of society. The field experiment is carried on one hundred and forty junior and senior college teachers. The technique proved efficient in improving the level of subjective well-being.

Afghanistan experiencing more than four decades of war and violence, which has caused a lot of adversity to all specially women and affected their quality of life. This research conducted with aim of studying effectiveness of quality of life therapy on subjective wellbeing of Afghan women. It was quasi-experimental study with experimental, control groups and follow-up stage. Simple random sampling method used, therefore at first stage 200 copies of positive and negative affects questionnaire distributed among female students at Kabul University and Shaheed Rabbani Education University of Kabul city. 40 participants who had obtained scores that are more negative were invited for this study. In the second stage, 40 participants assessed through Ryff Subjective wellbeing questionnaire and then they divided to research and control groups. Finally, out of 40 participants, 28 of them participated in two groups (16 participants per group). Then the experimental group received 6-session intervention according to quality of life therapy (QOLT) package and control group did not receive any intervention. At the end of the sessions, posttest performed for both groups. In order to understand the consistency level of treatment, after 2 months the groups assessed with Ryff’s subjective wellbeing questionnaire. SPSS version 25 used for data analysis. The results show quality of life therapy have increased the subjective wellbeing of research group’s subjects in both stages (P>0.05). Based on findings it has argued that using this therapeutic package enhances subjective wellbeing and could prevent many mental health disorders.
