The electronic and magnetic properties of the graphene/Eu/Ni(111) intercalation-like system are studied in the framework of the general gradient approximation with the effective Coulomb potential (GGA+U) and dispersive interactions taken into account. Intercalation of monoatomic europium layer underneath graphene on Ni(111) leads to the drastic changes of the electronic structure of graphene compared to free-standing graphene as well as graphene/Ni(111). The strong influence of the spin-polarized europium 4 f states, crossing the graphene-derived π states, on magnetic properties of graphene and on spin-filtering properties of the graphene/Eu/Ni(111) trilayer is discussed.

Magnetic semiconductors have attracted extensive attention due to their novel physical properties as well as the potential applications in future spintronics devices. Over the past decade, tremendous efforts have been made in the diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) system, with many controversies disentangled but many puzzles unsolved as well. Here in this paper, we summarize recent experimental results in the growth, microstructure and magnetic properties of Ge-based DMSs (mainlyGe1-xMnx), which have been comprehensively researched owing to their compatibility with Si microelectronics. Growth conditions of high-quality, defect-free, and magneticGe1-xMnxbulks, thin films, ordered arrays, quantum dots, and nanowires are discussed in detail.

ABSTRACTOver the past years, theoretical and experimental investigations have shown that Ce plays an important role in determining the electronic and magnetic properties in CeFe2- Recent experiments indicate that Ce carries a small moment in contrast to the earlier notion of its being non-magnetic. It is also been found that various additives to the intermetallic CeFe2 alloy behave differently when substituted at the Fe site. The magnetization in some cases remains nearly the same whereas in other cases drops off drastically. We report here the effect of Ti impurity substituted at the Fe site in CeFe2.

Organometallic sandwich complexes have been attracting tremendous interest for their potential applications in electronics and spintronics. Here, we systematically studied the structures, electronic and magnetic properties of one dimensional (1D) transition metal (TM)-anthracene (Ant) sandwich molecular wires (SMWs), [TM2Ant]∞ and [TM3Ant]∞ (TM=Ti, V, Cr, Mn), based on density functional theory calculations. Our results showed that all the 1D SMWs display normal sandwich configurations with their binding energies closely related to the choice of TM atoms. Excepting 1D [Mn2Ant]∞ and [Fe3Ant]∞ favoring antiferromagnetic ordering, most 1D [TM2Ant]∞ and [TM3Ant]∞ SMWs display robust ferromagnetic feathers. Particularly, 1D [Cr3Ant]∞ SMW is revealed to be ferromagnetic half-metal with large magnetic moment of 28.0µB per unit cell. Further spintransport calculations double proved that 1D [Cr3Ant]∞ SMW are good spintransport molecular devices. Our findings shed light on the properties of 1D Ant based SMWs and propose a new way to design potential electronic and spintronic devices.

This paper gives a brief summary of zethrene chemistry after the pioneering works by Clar, Mitchell, Sondheimer, and Staab et al. In the past a few years, various synthetic methods and stabilizing strategies have been developed, which have made the synthesis of stable, vertically and laterally extended zethrenes practically achievable. One of the most important discoveries for this type of molecule is their open-shell diradical character, which is the origin of their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. The fundamental structure–diradical character–physical property relationships were investigated, and these studies form the basis for the tailored design of more general open-shell singlet diradicaloids with controllable diradical character and physical properties.

The world-wide use of scleral contact lenses has dramatically increased over the past 10 year and has changed the way that we manage patients with corneal irregularity. Successfully fitting them can be challenging especially for eyes that have significant asymmetries of the cornea or sclera. The future of scleral lens fitting is utilizing corneo-scleral topography to accurately measure the anterior ocular surface and then using software to design lenses that identically match the scleral surface and evenly vault the cornea. This process allows the practitioner to efficiently fit a customized scleral lens that successfully provides the patient with comfortable wear and improved vision.

This article examines the development of Wagnerism in late-nineteenth-century Spain, focusing on how it became an integral part of Catalan nationalism. The reception of Wagner's music and ideas in Spain was determined by the country's uneven economic development and the weakness of its musical and political institutions—the same weaknesses that were responsible for the rise of Catalan nationalism. Lack of a symphonic culture in Spain meant that audiences were not prepared to comprehend Wagner's complexity, but that same complexity made Wagner's ideas acceptable to Spanish reformers who saw in the composer an exemplar of the European ideas needed to fix Spanish problems. Thus, when Wagner's operas were first staged in Spain, the Teatro Real de Madrid stressed Wagner's continuity with operas of the past; however, critics and audiences engaged with the works as difficult forms of modern music. The rejection of Wagner in the Spanish capital cleared the way for his ideas to be adopted in Catalonia. A similar dynamic occurred as Spanish composers tried to meld Wagner into their attempts to build a nationalist school of opera composition. The failure of Tomás Bréton's Los amantes de Teruel and Garín cleared the way for Felip Pedrell's more successful theoretical fusion of Wagnerism and nationalism. While Pedrell's opera Els Pirineus was a failure, his explanation of how Wagner's ideals and nationalism could be fused in the treatise Por nuestra música cemented the link between Catalan culture and Wagnerism.
