This study aimed to develop a scale to determine students’ perceptions of teacher involvement in mathematics homework assignments. An item pool (n = 30) was generated based on a literature review. Based on expert feedback, the number of items was reduced to 21 scored on a 5-point Likert-type scale. A draft named the “Scale of Teacher Involvement in Mathematics Homework Assignments (STIMHA)” was developed after the items were reviewed by a linguist. A pilot study was conducted with six middle school students to check for comprehensibility. The items were revised and finalized based on their feedback. The main study sample consisted of 751 middle school students from four schools in Demirci/Manisa in Turkey during the 2017-2018 academic year. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 24.0) and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS 21.0). Validity and reliability were established.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the epistemological beliefs of middle school students by means of draw-write-tell technique which is formed from three phases. Designed as a qualitative phenomenological research, this study employs 96 students (51 female, 45 male) selected by convenience sampling technique. The participants were attending various grade levels of a state secondary school in Yunusemre district of Manisa province in 2017-2018 academic year. In the first stage of the research, students were asked to pencil draw five things reminding or representing them the word “knowledge”. In the second stage, each student was asked to select one drawing amongst five, which best meets the concept of “knowledge” according to her/his personal opinion and which is identified with “knowledge” the most and write down why she/he chose this one. In the third stage, a total of 12 different focus group interviews were conducted with 53 volunteering students amongst the ones having participated in the earlier research stages. The data obtained from the first stage was thematically analyzed, while the remaining data was analyzed phenomenologically. Research findings show that most of the students see the authorities and the objects out there as sources of knowledge. In the processes of knowledge acquisition, they also perceive themselves as passive recipients of any given knowledge. It is observed that it is possible to measure the epistemological beliefs of the students for the source of knowledge through the drawings and the accuracy and justification of knowledge through the written materials and focus group interviews. Research results show that draw-write-tell technique is a new approach useful and practical in measuring the epistemological beliefs of middle school students.

In This Study The Beliefs And Attitudes Of Teachers And Education Students About Providing Death Education And Death Related Interventions Were Explored. Teachers From Twelve Elementary And Middle Schools ( N = 189), and education students from three universities ( n = 139) were surveyed. The groups did not differ significantly in beliefs about their own qualifications, whether the content belongs in school, and willingness to attend a seminar about providing death related interventions. There were no differences between the groups in intervention style, or in whether they preferred to intervene themselves or to have someone else (e.g., a school counselor) intervene. Teachers and students differed significantly only in frequency of experiences with bereaved students (χ2 = p < .0001). The experiences of interacting with bereaved students did not result in teachers believing themselves more qualified to provide death related interventions. These data indicate that, while many teachers are willing to provide death related interventions with elementary and middle school students, a majority (55%) of teachers would not use a proactive intervention style, that is, those teachers would not introduce the topic of the recent death of someone close to the child.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of middle school students’ learning attitudes and risk perception toward COVID-19 on their poor academic performance since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This study limited the sample to middle school students who responded that their academic performance was an A or B grade during the last academic year in 2019. For this study, 268 respondents were selected and logistic regression was employed. Self-motivated studying time and positive attitudes toward online learning predicted consistent academic performance since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Middle school students’ preference toward an in-person classroom format was related to poor academic performance since the COVID-19 pandemic began. A risk perception toward COVID-19 was related to poor academic performance since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It is imperative to provide educational programs which help students develop self-motivated studying habits to maintain their academic performance during COVID-19. Policymakers in schools should consider providing in-person options for students who are more academically successful in such an environment.

Using preservice teachers’ (PTs) opinions as its base, this study seeks to shed light on the process followed by PTs in teaching mathematical modeling to middle school students. The study group was composed of 18 middle school mathematics PTs, each of whom was selected using purposeful sampling. During the research period, PTs travelled in groups to the schools where they were to perform their practicum. Lessons were video recorded, and PTs shared these recordings and their classroom experiences with their peers. As a result of the analysis, the study’s findings were grouped into four main themes: (i) opinions regarding activities, (ii) opinions regarding preservice teachers, (iii) opinions regarding students, and (iv) opinions regarding mathematics teachers. Discussion of these findings revolved around both teacher training and mathematical modeling, which then led to several recommendations being made.
