Today translation experts agree that a translation teacher should be a practicing translator, aware of modern translation studies, having methodological knowledge and pedagogical skills, including the knowledge of translation didactics. A survey shows that in Russian universities there are practically no teachers with a degree in translation or those who have completed a specialized professional retraining program as a translation teacher. Thus, none of them has the full range of competences required to prepare translators who fully meet the requirements of the current translation industry. To change this situation, it is necessary to develop and implement special programs that allow translation teachers to supplement their education. These programs can be implemented in two formats. Firstly, there can be two different master’s degree programs: for those with a bachelor’s degree in translation and those with a bachelor’s degree in foreign language teaching. The program for the former should include more psychological and pedagogical disciplines, while the program for the latter should focus on translation. Secondly, it can be long-term courses of specialized professional retraining for translation teachers with two different sets of disciplines depending on their degree. Within the above-mentioned programs, special attention should be paid to the course of translation didactics.

The monograph is aimed at analyzing the specific character of the literary discourse, which is viewed in theoretical and practical aspects. The volume thematically falls into five sections; each of them reveals particular items of the literary narrative. Special attention is paid to the literary approaches to discourse, its linguistic and translating perspectives, its realization in national literatures and usage in foreign language teaching. The issues researched by the authors of the book reflect the actual problems in the branch of literature, linguistics, translation studies, pedagogics and methodology, and represent the variants of their solution. The edition is mainly addressed to scholars, post-graduates and students engaged in the Humanities, and all those who are interested in peculiarities of literary discourse.

This study sought to identify the attitudes students from bachelor’s degree programs may have towards the use of the extensive reading technique implemented in the English courses. The study analyzed three attitudinal values: Affective, cognitive, and behavioral measured by using a questionnaire and focus groups. The sample consisted of 56 participants studying bachelor’s degree programs at the University of Cauca in Colombia. Results indicated that most of the students responded positively towards this technique.

The article deals with the foreign language training in Russian Universities and the development of professional competencies of the graduates. The reasons for employers’ dissatisfaction with the quality of young personnel’s education are analyzed. An interdisciplinary model of professionally oriented foreign language teaching is considered as one of the means of students’ competencies forming. The potential of project tasks in this model is described, and their advantages in comparison with traditional foreign language teaching methods are indicated. The authors present the system of individual and group projects in English used in Petrozavodsk State University. Besides, the authors describe the stages of students ’activities, give specific examples of projects and analyze difficulties in organizing students’ project work. The article contains an analysis of the results of student surveys confirming the feasibility of using professionally-oriented project tasks in teaching a foreign language at a university.

The article identifies the main learning technologies used to teach students in higher medical education. Learning technologies have been found to help improve the learning process and improve learning outcomes. The main learning technologies used in working with students of higher medical educational institutions are analyzed. It is investigated that learning technologies influence the teaching of foreign languages. It was found that the use of research, simulation, information, problem-based learning and heuristic are common and used in foreign language teaching. It is concluded that for the effective use of technology it is important to pay attention to what technology may be suitable for each individual student group. The use of modern teaching aids is part of information and communication technology. It is this technology that reveals the full range of ICT applications. Search technologies allow to actively involve students in research activities due to motivation to learn a foreign language and search for new resources and sources of information. Heuristic technology is one of the most used today, it allows to involve all students in active interaction in the classroom, to make associations between clinical disciplines and English and to be as ready as possible for interactive tasks. Simulation and dialogue technologies give students the opportunity to feel like real doctors, gain experience in communication in different situations and develop their communication skills. In the future, we plan to explore learning strategies that should be used in foreign language classes.

Abstract The concept of specialist languages has been widely discussed and analyzed not only with respect to the linguistic field (in the context of which certain changes are anticipated in language as a communicational tool), or translation studies (including cultural aspects of expressions and their equivalents) but also with respect to strategies and techniques used in the foreign language teaching process. The main objective of this paper is to examine the language of law on a sample of selected Polish legal expressions (property law expressions) and their English equivalents. The article points to the ways of translating expressions from this specialist language and emphasizes the need to include some cultural aspects in the translation process. The article starts with a presentation of various views on translation, and then provides information on specialist languages, their types and features, leading subsequently to the analysis of certain terms and concepts of law and the ways of translating them.

The paper presents the phenomenon of the existence of parallel phraseological units in two or more languages, i.e. the units, which are realizations of one semantic model with possible lexical changes. Therefore, parallel units differ from the international ones, whose components are identical in numerous languages. The sources of such units are listed, among which the most important are the Bibie and Creek mythology as well as the ancient culture, common customs and practices, certain superstitions and common misconceptions, literary masterpieces, the world history. The reflection of national and local colour in particular realizations of a given semantic model is presented as relevant to the analyses of the phenomenon of parallel phraseology. The problem of false parallel phraseological units is briefly discussed in the paper. The loan phraseological units are presented as parallel units in a contrastive perspective. The studies on parallel phraseological units are of importance both for theoretical and practical reasons, since apart from contributing to the finding of typological linguistics, the results of such analyses can be exploited in foreign language teaching, phraseography and translation studies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made significant changes in the educational process in almost all countries of the world. The methods and approaches, techniques and technology that teachers used in offline learning, turned out to be ineffective. The issues related to online teaching of Russian as a foreign language have become particularly relevant, since many students had to leave Russia and study the language only online. The purpose of the study is to consider the prospects (immediate and long-term) of the Russian language online teaching to foreign students in Russian universities. The research materials are the results of a survey conducted among the 1st year master degree students, specialty 45.04.01 Russian as a Foreign Language of the Faculty of Philology of the RUDN University (Moscow), as well as the experience of the author, who teaches Russian to foreign students online on the TEIS (Telecommunication Educational and Informational System) and Microsoft Teams platforms. The study revealed the pros and cons of online learning of Russian as a foreign language, and showed the ways of improving its effectiveness in Russian universities. As a result of the conducted research, the immediate prospects are identified, which include the implementation of relevant components of pedagogical tools in Russian as a foreign language online learning: modern pedagogical technologies, the principles of individualization and differentiation, and the communicative approach. The long-term prospects concern teaching Russian to foreign students only in a mixed format. The formation of communicative competence, the lack of Russian-speaking environment, difficulties in organising control and developing students' writing skills are among the main problems that undermine the quality of teaching Russian as a foreign language online. It is concluded that in the future we should expect the implementation of a new approach in the world education system, since the pandemic will certainly affect the market of educational services all over the world.

The global marketplace is characterized by various changes occurring in economic, social, natural, and technological areas. As such, experts in numerous fields are still working to revise various systems and infrastructures to operate in a robust manner within the new realities of today. This article focuses on part of that massive effort by examining the methods used in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in non-English speaking countries and its potential impact on long-term economic sustainability and productivity since English remains the global business language. The article commences with an introduction to the realities of contemporary globalism that underscore the very purpose for this work, and the subsequent sections present and then synthesize all material to create a paradigm shift in thinking required for teaching EFL in non-English speaking nations.
