Methionine supplementation of low-protein diet and subsequent feeding of low-energy diet on the performance and blood chemical profile of broiler chickens

The effects were investigated of supplementing methionine (Met) in a low-crude protein diet (Low-CP+Met) during Days 11–24 post-hatch and subsequent feeding with a low-metabolisable energy diet (Low-ME; –0.31 MJ/kg) during Days 25–42 on the productive performance and blood chemistry profile of broiler chickens. The 1600 broiler chicks were divided into four groups and fed as follows: (1) Control diet; (2) Low-CP (Met deficiency) diet during Days 11–24, then re-feeding with conventional diet; (3) Low-CP+Met diet during days 11–24, then re-feeding with conventional diet; and (4) Low-CP+Met+Low-ME diet (Low-CP+Met diet during Days 11–24, then re-feeding with Low-ME diet). During Days 11–24, the growth performance of the Control group was better than the other groups (P < 0.01), although the Low-CP+Met diet improved bodyweight, feed conversion ratio and improved the protein conversion ratio compare to the Low-CP group (P < 0.01). During the re-feeding phase (Days 25–42), reducing the dietary energy resulted in better growth performance and a better protein conversion ratio and energy conversion ratio than in the Control group (P < 0.05). Triglyceride, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and total cholesterol in serum were higher, and non-esterified fatty acid was lower in the Control group than those of the Low-CP+Met+Low-ME group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, reducing dietary protein with balanced amino acids during the grower period and subsequent feeding with a low-energy diet promoted productive performance, improved protein utilisation and reduced fat accumulation via increasing lipolysis and/or disruption of the triglyceride transportation in broiler chickens.

Abstract Copper (Cu) is necessary for biological utility, nevertheless when existing in abundance; it can produce plentiful injurious impacts. This enquiry was carried out to explore the efficiency of individual or combined doses of vitamin C (Vit C) and vitamin E (Vit E) in ameliorating some biochemical, genotoxicity and pathological changes in the liver of copper sulphate (CuSO 4 )-intoxicated chickens. One hundred- one day old broiler chicks were haphazardly divided into 5groups of 20 chicks each. The broilers were fed on basal diet only (control, gp.1 ) or supplemented with 300 mg CuSO 4 /kg diet (Cu, gp.2 ), CuSO 4 + 250 mg Vit C /kg diet (Cu+ Vit C, gp.3 ), CuSO 4 +250 mg Vit E /kg diet (Cu+ Vit E, gp.4 ) and both vitamins C + E (Cu+ Vit C+ Vit E, gp.5 ) for six weeks. The results displayed that CuSO 4 - intoxicated birds (gp.2) had significantly ( p<0.05 ) dwindled body weight, gain and feed consumption with increased feed conversion rate from week 2 till the 6 th week compared with control group. Serum aminotransferases (ALT, AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly ( p<0.05 ) augmented in CuSO4- exposed group (gp.2) with significantly ( p<0.05 ) drop in serum total protein (TP), albumin, globulins, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C), and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to control. Concomitantly, histopathological and DNA changes were perceived in liver of CuSO 4 -intoxicated birds. Co-supplementation of Vit C, and Vit E single-handedly or incorporation to CuSO 4 -intoxicated chickens displayed an enhancement in performance traits and abovementioned changes, especially with those given combination of vitamins. From the extant enquiry, it could be established that supplementation of vitamin C and E were beneficial for alleviation the harmful effects of CuSO 4 on performance and other studied parameters in broiler chickens.

1. The influence of a low-energy diet when associated with high-cholesterol intake was investigated in seventeen normal men during an 8-week cross-over study. The subjects were given a daily supplement of two whole eggs and two egg yolks (approximately 1 g cholesterol) either with their usual diet for 4 weeks or with a low-energy diet for 4 weeks. Each subject took part randomly in both dietary periods.2. During the first part of the study, no changes occurred in the plasma cholesterol of the subjects with egg supplementation of the usual diet.3. In contrast, the low-energy diet and associated weight loss markedly decreased the tolerance to high- cholesterol intake resulting in increased plasma cholesterol. The mean rise was 22.7% but with wide individual variations in the response. This was almost completely normalized when the subjects returned to their usual energy intake indicating the involvement of weight reduction in the increase observed.4. Changes in low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were parallel to those of total plasma cholesterol with an increase following the low-energy diet and normalization after body-weight recovery.5. The opposite effect was shown with the low-energy diet after previous adaptation to the consumption of four eggs per day. This dietary regimen resulted in a decrease in plasma cholesterol although it was not significant. Moreover, the lipoprotein profile was improved with a decrease in very-low-density-lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and an increase in high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.6. High-cholesterol intake induced significant changes in lipoprotein composition whatever the energy ration. LDL and HDL were enriched in cholesterol esters as early as the 1st month of egg supplementation of the diet.7. Taken together, the results emphasize the possible adverse effect of slimming diets when associated with high-cholesterol intake. The existence of ‘high-responders’ to these dietary conditions calls for special attention to be paid to the cholesterol content of restricted diets.

As the use of antibiotics as growth promoters have been banned in different countries, researchers have been working hard to find alternatives to antibiotics, and also come up with other substances that can promote growth, health and productivity in broiler chickens. The study was conducted to evaluate the serum biochemistry of broiler chickens served dietary inclusion of probiotics (Saccharomyces cereviasae) and enzyme. One hundred and twenty, one day-old broiler chicks Ross strain were used for the study. The birds were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments. Each treatment contained 30 birds replicated three times to contain 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design experiment. The four dietary treatments were T1 Control (no probiotics and no enzyme), T2 (both probiotics and enzyme), T3 (Probiotics only) and T4 (Enzyme only). The probiotics and enzyme was included at 0.8% and 0.02%, respectively. The birds were given feed and water ad-libitum. The experiment lasted for eight weeks. At the end of the experimental period, three birds were randomly chosen from each replicate for serum biochemistry profiling and liver function test. The results showed that inclusion of probiotics and enzyme had significant effect (p<0.05) on the serum biochemistry profile and liver function indices. Low density lipoprotein was reduced from 3.83±0.60g/l in the control group to 2.18±0.12g/l in T2 (Probiotic and Enzyme) group. Lymphocytes values ranged from 26.00% to 38.00% in the treated groups, while the control had 45.67%. The dietary inclusion of probiotics and enzyme reduced total cholesterol from 5.07g/l to 4.22g/l and low density lipoprotein from 3.83g/l to 2.18g/l in the (probiotics and enzyme) treated group and also improved liver function indices of the broiler chickens. Aspartate aminotransferase, Alanine aminotransferase, Alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin had range values of 114.67 to 150.67 µl, (21.00 to 28.67 µl, 10.33 to 17.00 µl and 1.30 to 1.47mg/dl, respectively. It was therefore, concluded that combination of probiotics and enzyme should be included in broiler diets for immunity improvement, good liver function and reduction in cholesterol levels.   Depuis l'interdit de l'utilisation d'antibiotiques comme stimulateur de croissance dans différents pays, les chercheurs ont travaillé dur pour trouver des alternatives aux antibiotiques, ainsi que d'autres substances susceptibles de favoriser la croissance, la santé et la productivité des poulets de chair. L'étude a été menée pour évaluer la biochimie sérique des poulets de chair a servi d'inclusion alimentaire de probiotiques (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) et d'enzymes. Des poussins de chair Ross de cent vingt et un jours ont été utilisés pour l'étude. Les oiseaux ont été attribués au hasard à quatre traitements diététiques. Chaque traitement contenait 30 oiseaux répliqués trois fois pour contenir 10 oiseaux par réplica dans une expérience de conception complètement aléatoire. Les quatre traitements diététiques étaient le contrôle T1 (sans probiotiques et sans enzyme), T2 (probiotiques et enzyme), T3 (probiotiques uniquement) et T4 (enzyme uniquement). Les probiotiques et l'enzyme ont été inclus à 0,8% et 0,02%, respectivement. Les oiseaux ont reçu de la nourriture et de l'eau ad-libitum. L'expérience a duré huit semaines. À la fin de la période expérimentale, trois oiseaux ont été choisis au hasard dans chaque réplique pour le profilage de la biochimie sérique et le test de la fonction hépatique. Les résultats ont montré que l'inclusion de probiotiques et d'enzymes avait un effet significatif (p <0,05) sur le profil biochimique sérique et les indices de la fonction hépatique. Les lipoprotéines de basse densité ont été réduites de 3,83 ± 0,60 g / l dans le groupe témoin à 2,18 ± 0,12 g / l dans le groupe T2 (probiotique et enzyme). Les valeurs des lymphocytes variaient de 26,00% à 38,00% dans les groupes traités, tandis que le témoin en avait 45,67%. L'inclusion alimentaire de probiotiques et d'enzymes a réduit le cholestérol total de 5,07 g / l à 4,22 g / l et les lipoprotéines de basse densité de 3,83 g / l à 2,18 g / l dans le groupe traité (probiotiques et enzyme) et a également amélioré les indices de la fonction hépatique des poulets de chair. L'aspartate aminotransférase, l'alanine aminotransférase, la phosphatase alcaline et la bilirubine totale avaient des valeurs comprises entre 114,67 et 150,67 µl, (21,00 à 28,67 µl, 10,33 à 17,00 µl et 1,30 à 1,47 mg / dl, respectivement. Il a donc été conclu que l'association de probiotiques et d'enzyme doivent être inclus dans les régimes alimentaires pour poulets de chair pour l'amélioration de l'immunité, la bonne fonction hépatique et la réduction du taux de cholestérol.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementation different levels of dried dill powder with diet on some physiological characteristics of  broiler chickens. 336 chicks, day-old 46 gm weight /chick. Birds were randomly distributed into four treatment groups with three replicates per treatment (28 bird/replicate).Treatments were as follow:T1: control group (without any addition) T2, T3 and T4 adding dried dill powder at levels  0.4 ,0.6, 0.8% respectively. Experiment lasted five weeks, which at the end measurements of protein, glucose, albumin, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) in blood serum were done. The results showed  a significant (p<0.05) increase in protein and HDL levels in blood serum of dill treatments compared to control group. While ,albumin  and triglycerides levels were not affected by supplementing the dried dill powder, whereas a significant decrease (p<0.05) in levels of serum glucose, uric acid, cholesterol, LDL and VLDL in T2, T3 and T4.  It can be concluded from this study that supplementation of dried dill powder to broiler diets led to an improvement of lipoprotein blood serum characteristics.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of turmeric and ginger on lipid profile of male rats exposed to oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide H2O2 at a concentration of 1% given with consumed drinking water to male rats. Methods: 200 mg/kg from turmeric and ginger were used, and the animals were treatment for 30 days. Results: the results showed a significant increase in cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), whereas it explained a significant decrease in high density lipoprotein (HDL) of male rats exposed to oxidative stress when compared with control group. the results showed a significant decrease in cholesterol, triglycerides, (LDL), (VLDL), whereas it explained a significant increase in (HDL) of rats treated with turmeric and ginger at dose 200 mg/kg when compared with male rats exposed to oxidative stress.

The present study evaluated the effect of whole egg consumption on the liver, testes, cauda epididymal sperm reserve and lipid profile of male rats. These evaluations were carried out on adult twenty (20) male albino rats, which were randomly selected into four groups of 5 rats each, designated groups A, B, C and D. Group A was the control group and received only equivalent volume of distilled water, while groups B, C and D received 0.25mg/kg, 0.5mg/kg; and 1.0mg/kg body weight of the quail egg respectively. Standard procedures were carried out in the tissue processing, cauda epididymal sperm reserve and in lipid profile determinations. On days 35 and 49, the mean serum total cholesterol value of group D was significantly lower than that of the control group. On day 35, the mean serum low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL cholesterol) values of all the treatment groups were significantly lower and higher than that of the control group, respectively. However, on days 49 and 63, the mean serum very low density lipoprotein (VLDL cholesterol) and triglyceride values of all the treatment groups were significantly higher than that of the control group. A significant increase in cadual epididymal sperm count (CESR) was recorded on day 63 at the mid and high doses. No obvious pathological lesions were observed in the histomorphology of the testes and liver when compared to the control. Therefore, whole quail egg consumption caused an increase in serum triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein concentration, and also improved fertility. In other words, prolonged consumption of quail egg should be done with caution as it may predispose one to cardiovascular disease.

The present study aims to evaluate the effects of methotrexate (MTX) with and without vitamin A (Vit. A) on some biochemical parameters and histological structure in male rabbits liver. Twenty male rabbits weighing 1250-1480 gm were divided into four equal number groups. The first group was given 2 ml distilled water as control group. The second group was given MTX (20 mg/kg), the third group was given Vit. A (5000 IU), while the fourth group was given MTX (20 mg/kg) +Vit. A (5000 IU) in alternative days. Following four weeks of treatment, lipid profile total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), [low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)]; in addition to thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4)] and liver enzymes [glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT)] were determined in the serum. Also, the histological examination of liver of all the experimental groups were carried out. The results were revealed that the treatment with MTX caused a significant P≤0.05 increases in TC, HDL, LDL, T4, and GPT when compared with the control group. The treatment with Vit. A did not cause any significant P≥0.05 differences in all the studied parameters. The MTX+Vit. A treated group showed a significant P≤0.05 increases only in GPT compared with the control group; while a significant P≤0.05 decreases was found in TC, HDL, T3, T4, and GOT when compared with the MTX treated group. The histological examination of the liver sections showed that MTX administration caused major histological changes in comparison with the control such as inflammatory cell infiltrations, vascular congestion, sinusoidal dilatation and granular degeneration of hepatocytes. Treatment with Vit. A showed a typical structure in liver tissue. While in MTX+Vit. A group, the histological changes were less severe than those in the MTX treated group; these changes were granular degeneration of hepatocytes and sinusoidal dilatation at low levels. The overall results of this study confirmed that administration of Vit. A decreased the side effects of MTX; this protective effect of Vit. A may have clinical applications in chemotherapy.

Fortified milk containing Lactobacillus plantarum, L. casei, and L. acidophilus isolates and their mixture were used in dosing the male albino rats at an age of 9-12 weeks at an average of 23 g with induced hypothyroidism at a concentration of 0.6 g.kg-1 of carbimazole. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) were estimated. The results showed a significant increase in the level of triglycerides (TG), cholesterol and triglycerides. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), with a significant decrease in the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in infected male mice, compared to the control sample, and upon dosing with liquid milk fortified, it returned to its normal level without significant differences from the control group.


Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder that is characterized with an elevation in the cholesterol serum levels that can be treated with various hypolipidemic drugs like rosuvastatin. The present study was undertaken to determine and evaluate the hypolipidemic effect of milk thistle seeds extract in comparison with rosuvastatin and the combination of both for the treatment of dyslipidemia in rats. Also its effect on blood glucose levels on experimentally induced dyslipidemic rats. In vivo studies were conducted on wister albino laboratory rats, in which 49 rats were induced to be dyslipidemic by a daily intragastric administration of cholesterol (2 g/kg). The induction of dyslipidemia was evaluated by comparing these rats with a negative control group that was composed of 10 healthy rats. Then, after one month dyslipidemia was induced in 49 rats that were divided into 6 groups, as the following; positive control group (n=9) received cholesterol (2 g/kg) for another one month, and the other five groups each of 8 rats continued to receive cholesterol (2 g/kg) for one month along with therapy as; rosuvastatin low dose (RL) group received 10 mg/kg, rosuvastatin high dose (RH) group received 20 mg/kg, milk thistle (MT) group received 7.15 mg/kg, (RL+MT) group received a combination of 10 mg/kg of rosuvastatin and 7.15 mg/kg of milk thistle, and (RH+MT) group received a combination of 20 mg/kg of rosuvastatin and 7.15 mg/kg of milk thistle. The statistical results of biochemical analysis showed that all the studied therapeutic protocols whether given alone; RL, RH, and MT or in a combination; RL+MT and RH+MT led to a significant (p≤0.05) hypolipidemic effect that reduced the total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and increased the high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. In conclusion, all therapeutic protocols were effective in treating dyslipidemia, as they all reduced the TC, TG, LDL, and VLDL, and increased the HDL cholesterol significantly (p≤0.05). Furthermore, we found that milk thistle can be used in the management of dyslipidemia, as it has a hypolipidemic effect. Also, the addition of milk thistle to rosuvastatin therapy reduced the risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM), as it has a glucose modulating activity either when it was given alone or in combination with rosuvastatin. Moreover, the combination of milk thistle and rosuvastatin was of a great benefit, as it gave an intensive goal of therapy than each one alone in altering all lipid profile parameters.

     The aim of this study is to explain the effect of Ethanolic extract 70% of Metracaria chamomella on some physiological parameters in male rabbits. Twelve adult male rabbits were used in this study and were divided equally into two groups: First group was control (C) and received normal saline for four weeks, the second group (Treated group) was intubated orally with ethanolic extract of Metracaria chamomella in a dose 70 mg/kg B.W. for four weeks. Blood samples were collected by heart puncture from each animal at the end of experiment. Blood sample was divided into a part for hematological study and a part for biochemical analysis. The value of serum urea, and creatinine were reduced in animals that received Metracaria chamomella extract at dose of 70 mg/ kg B.W. as compared with the control group. Significant decrease in serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activity was observed in Metracaria treated animal as compared with the control group. This study explained that there was significant increase in serum total protein, serum albumin and serum globulin in treated animals as compared with the control group. The value of total cholesterol, serum triacylglycerol, serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration were reduced significantly in animal received Metracaria chamomella extract while the high density lipoprotein cholesterol was elevated significantly as compared with control group. While the effect of Metracaria chamomella extract on blood picture showed no changes in red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value but showed significant decrease in platelet count, and significant   increase in white blood cell count as compared with control group. Over all this study explained that Metracaria chamomella extract had Reno protective and hypolipidimic effect in male rabbit.
