AbstractFlowering rush (Butomus umbellatus L.) is an invasive aquatic and wetland plant capable of developing monotypic stands in emergent and submersed sites. This plant can rapidly outcompete native vegetation and impede human practices by reducing recreation (boating, fishing, and skiing) and disrupting agricultural use of water resources (irrigation canals). Mechanical removal practices occurring biweekly, monthly, bimonthly, and once per growing season were compared with chemical control with diquat applied sequentially at 0.19 ppmv ai for two consecutive months over 2 yr (2016 and 2017). Biweekly removal gave the most consistent control of B. umbellatus biomass and propagules. Diquat application along with monthly and bimonthly clippings gave varying degrees of B. umbellatus control. Clipping once per growing season did not control B. umbellatus when compared with reference plants, while clipping B. umbellatus every 2 wk (biweekly) controlled rush propagules most effectively. However, it is unlikely this method will be sufficient as a stand-alone control option due to the slow speed of harvester boats, the potential these boats have to spread B. umbellatus propagules to more sites, and the expense of mechanical operations. However, clipping could be used as part of an integrated strategy for B. umbellatus control.

Aquaculture production (inland and marine) has been increasing globally reaching 80.1 million metric tons in 2016. Simultaneously the utilisation of fish food per capita has also been risen reaching 20.0 kg per year in 2016. However, the growing industry also experiences problems including diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, helminths and parasitic crustaceans on valuable seafood products resulting in economic losses. Antimicrobial agents and chemical control strategies used to control such diseases are creating environmentally detrimental effects as well as encouraging development and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Vaccine developments are costly and lengthy with application difficulties in farm settings. Accordingly, alternative therapies for controlling bacterial pathogens in aquaculture are gaining importance. One such measure is to use bacteriophages that are specific to disease causing bacteria.

Background: Periodontal disease is an immuno-inflammatory condition of tissues that surround and hold the teeth. It is the disease which succeeds in all races, groups and both genders. Almost 10 to15% of the global population gets suffered from severe periodontitis as per WHO reports. Periodontal disease may likely cause other systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and pre-term low birth weight infants. Mechanical removal of plaques and calculus deposits from supra and subgingival environment is the backbone of periodontal treatment till date whereas complete elimination of these deleterious agents is quite unrealistic as the pocket depth increases. Recent Approaches: Recently controlled local drug delivery application is more encouraging in comparison to systemic approach as it mainly targets to enhance the therapeutic efficacy by maintaining site-specificity, avoiding first pass metabolism, reduction in gastrointestinal (GI) side effects and decreasing the dose. Several drugs such as antiseptics and antibiotics alongwith various carriers are being formulated as local drug delivery systems for effective management of the disease. Various local delivery systems reported are fibers, films, strips, compacts, injectables, microparticles, vesicular carriers, gels and nanoparticles. These local carriers provide effective prolonged treatment at the site of infection at reduced doses. This review enlightens detailed pathophysiology and various phases of periodontitis, challenges in treatment of disease and various antimicrobial agents (along with their marketed formulations) used. The main emphasis of the review is to cover all carrier systems developed so far for local delivery application in the effective management of periodontitis, as a patient compliant drug therapy.

Dental caries, as a common oral infectious disease, is a worldwide public health issue. Oral biofilms are the main cause of dental caries. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is well recognized as the major causative factor of dental caries within oral biofilms. In addition to mechanical removal such as tooth brushing and flossing, the topical application of antimicrobial agents is necessarily adjuvant to the control of caries particularly for high-risk populations. The mainstay antimicrobial agents for caries such as chlorhexidine have limitations including taste confusions, mucosal soreness, tooth discoloration, and disruption of an oral microbial equilibrium. Antimicrobial small molecules are promising in the control of S. mutans due to good antimicrobial activity, good selectivity, and low toxicity. In this paper, we discussed the application of antimicrobial small molecules to the control of S. mutans, with a particular focus on the identification and development of active compounds and their modes of action against the growth and virulence of S. mutans.

AbstractMouthwashes are an effective complementary method in the biofilm prevention and chemical control, when the practice of mechanical removal is insufficient. Among the active compounds most used in antiseptics are chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, triclosan and essential oils. In order to reduce undesirable effects, such as teeth and restorations staining and the supragingival calculus formation, observed mainly after use for long periods, natural products of plant origin have been extensively studied and incorporated into oral hygiene formulations. Commonly used as a functional food or spice in world gastronomy, Coriandrum sativum (C. sativum), popularly known as coriander, is a natural therapeutic resource with several properties, including antifungal and antioxidant ones. Thus, the objective of this study was to carry out a literature review of articles published in the last 10 years that relate natural products, dentistry and C. sativum, in order to understand the role of naturally occurring agents with potential therapeutic applications in the dental fields, as well as to evaluate the application of C. sativum in the treatment of oral diseases. Therefore, a bibliographic search was carried out in the ScienceDirect and PubMed databases, obtaining 20 articles. It was possible to confirm the antifungal properties and the mode of action of the essential oil from C. sativum in Candida species, as well as its relatively low cytotoxicity in human cells. These findings should encourage further studies for the development of mouthwashes based on C. sativum as an alternative to mouthwashes available on the market. Keywords: Dentistry. Oral Health. Analysis of the constituents of renal and biliary calculi may be of help in the management of patients with calculous disease. Several methods of analysis are available for identifying these constituents. Most common are chemical methods, optical crystallography, x-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. The application of a SEM with x-ray analysis capabilities should be considered as an additional alternative.A scanning electron microscope equipped with an x-ray “mapping” attachment offers an additional dimension in its ability to locate elemental constituents geographically, and thus, provide a clue in determination of possible metabolic etiology in calculus formation. The ability of this method to give an undisturbed view of adjacent layers of elements in their natural state is of advantage in determining the sequence of formation of subsequent layers of chemical constituents.
