Plasma beta effects on the edge magnetic field structure and divertor heat-loads in Wendelstein 7-X high-performance scenarios

Abstract To support the scenario design for the upcoming longpulse high-performance campaign of Wendelstein 7-X, this work presents a study of high-beta full-field 3D equilibria obtained with the HINT code. For three magnetic configurations of different edge-iota, the effects of both overall pressure and pressure profile changes on the magnetic topology are analyzed. Anisotropic diffusion modeling is used to obtain estimates of the conductive heat load distribution both on the divertor and other plasma-facing components in finite-beta magnetic configurations. For the magnetic standard configuration, limitations of the model are outlined by comparing measured and predicted heatloads by performing a linear regression of the main strike-line position against various plasma parameters in both the experimental and the simulated device.

AbstractOlive quick decline syndrome (OQDS) is a disorder associated with bacterial infections caused by Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca ST53 in olive trees. Metabolic profile changes occurring in infected olive trees are still poorly investigated, but have the potential to unravel reliable biomarkers to be exploited for early diagnosis of infections. In this study, an untargeted metabolomic method using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS) was used to detect differences in samples (leaves) from healthy (Ctrl) and infected (Xf) olive trees. Both unsupervised and supervised data analysis clearly differentiated the groups. Different metabolites have been identified as potential specific biomarkers, and their characterization strongly suggests that metabolism of flavonoids and long-chain fatty acids is perturbed in Xf samples. In particular, a decrease in the defence capabilities of the host after Xf infection is proposed because of a significant dysregulation of some metabolites belonging to flavonoid family. Moreover, oleic acid is confirmed as a putative diffusible signal factor (DSF). This study provides new insights into the host-pathogen interactions and confirms LC-HRMS-based metabolomics as a powerful approach for disease-associated biomarkers discovery in plants. Abstract The behavior of heavy/high-Z impurity tungsten (W) in an improved high-performance fully non-inductive discharge on EAST with ITER-like divertor (ILD) is analyzed. It is found that W could be well controlled. The causes of no W accumulation are clarified by analyzing the background plasma parameters and modeling the W transport. It turns out that the electron temperature (T_e) and its gradient are usually high while the toroidal rotation and density peaking of the bulk plasma are small. In this condition, the modeled W turbulent diffusion coefficient is big enough to offset the total turbulent and neoclassical pinch, so that W density profile for zero particle flux will not be very peaked. Combining NEO and TGLF for the W transport coefficient and the impurity transport code STRAHL, not only the core W density profile is predicted but also the radiated information mainly produced by W in the experiment can be closely reconstructed. At last, the physics of controlling W accumulation by electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) is illustrated considering the effects of changed T_e by ECRH on ionization balance and transport of W. It shows that the change of ionization and recombination balance by changed T_e is not enough to explain the experimental observation of W behavior, which should be attributed to the changed W transport. By comparing the W transport coefficients in two kinds of plasmas with different T_e profiles, it is shown that high T_e and its gradient play a key role to generate large turbulent diffusion through increasing the growth rate of linear instability so that W accumulation is prevented.

This paper presents the measurement results of the dynamic tensile strength of a High Performance Concrete (HPC) obtained using full-field identification method. An ultra-high speed imaging system and the virtual fields method were used to obtain this information. Furthermore the measurement results were compared with the local point-wise measurement to validate the data pressing. The obtained spall strength was found to be consistently 20% lower than the one obtained when the Novikov formula is used.

We conducted an experiment to demonstrate the thermoelectric nano-gap, which is recently expected to own high performance, in principle, because it does not have conductive heat flow between the high and low temperature region. In this study, the thermoelectric nano-gap is realized with a pair of probe and substrate where they are finely positioned. A temperature difference of ca. 10 K is imposed to the nano-gap under vacuum circumstances. A representative thermoelectric voltage, tunneling-current and gap were 250 μV, 0.3 nA and 50 nm. The obtained voltage and current, with assuming an effective probe-diameter of 10 nm, roughly agreed to a theoretical study (G. Despesse and T. Jager, J. Appl. Phys., Vol.96, p.5026-, 2004). However, the obtained gap was 25 times larger than that from the theoretical study.

Development of a reliable high-performance multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) requires an accurate and practical model of the vehicle dynamics. This paper describes the process and results of the dynamic modeling of an unmanned aerial platform known as quadrotor. To model a vehicle dynamics, elementary physical and aerodynamical principles has been employed. Parameter estimations, from a UAV design have been obtained through direct and indirect measurements. In addition to standard configuration of VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) platform, the amortized landing gear, modeled as spring-damper system, has been added. The resulting model has been implemented in a simulation environment under MATLABs toolbox, SIMULINK. Some numerical results are presented to illustrate response of the open loop system to specific commands.

Emerging applications for shape memory alloys, such as actuation and energy absorption devices, require better understanding of the mechanics and failure behaviors associated with these materials. In this paper we study the inelastic response of a NiTi alloy under combined thermomechanical actuation. In particular, failure due to strains generated by cooling under isobaric and isothermal conditions is investigated. Strain measurements are performed using a new technique known as Direct Strain Imaging, which provides full field strains of both higher accuracy and higher spatial resolution than previously achievable. The experimental data support the conclusion that the type of fracture observed may be attributed to stress redistribution, caused by a phase transformation.
