Abstract The issues of studying the impact interaction of seeds with the soil environment by the method of discrete elements are considered. The main parameters of the used virtual stand are described and a brief description of the interaction model is given. As a result of the study, the depth of penetration of the seed, its displacement in the horizontal plane and the greatest depth of the crater were obtained. Analysis of the data showed that on unbound and loosely bound soils, a penetration rate of 50 m/s is sufficient for almost 100% penetration into the surface layer without noticeable displacement of the pelleted seed. On medium cohesive soils at a speed of 50 m/s, stable seed penetration is not ensured. The probability of its release is about 10%. At speeds of 75 m/s, almost 100% penetration into the surface layer is provided without noticeable displacement of the coated seed. On cohesive soils at speeds of 25 m/s, the seed is always ejected from the crater over a considerable distance. At a speed of 50 m/s, the probability of seed ejection is reduced to 30% and at 75 m/s to 10%.

Near-infrared (NIR) reflective materials are being developed for mitigating building cooling needs. Their use contributes to broadening the range of colours, responding to the urban aesthetic demand without compromising the building performance. Despite the increase in NIR reflective pigments investigation, there is still a knowledge gap in their applicability, impact, and durability in multilayer finishing coatings of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS). Hence, the main goal of this work consists of evaluating the impact of incorporating NIR reflective pigments (NRP) in the solar reflectance of the surface layer of ETICS, without affecting the colour perception, as well as their influence on the colour durability and surface temperature. As such, colour, solar reflectance, and surface temperature were monitored for 2 years in dark-coloured specimens of ETICS, with and without NRP and a primer layer. It was confirmed that the main contribution of NRP is the increase of solar reflectance and, consequently, the decrease in surface temperature, especially for high exterior temperatures (around 30 ºC). Moreover, these pigments highly increase the NIR reflectance without affecting the visible colour. In addition, they contribute to maintaining the colour characteristics. The application of primer increased the surface temperature, especially for higher exterior temperatures. However, it contributes to a lower colour difference and solar reflectance variation, which is an important achievement for durability purposes.

To reduce the impact of congestion, it is necessary to improve our overall understanding of the influence of the autonomous vehicle. Recently, deep reinforcement learning has become an effective means of solving complex control tasks. Accordingly, we show an advanced deep reinforcement learning that investigates how the leading autonomous vehicles affect the urban network under a mixed-traffic environment. We also suggest a set of hyperparameters for achieving better performance. Firstly, we feed a set of hyperparameters into our deep reinforcement learning agents. Secondly, we investigate the leading autonomous vehicle experiment in the urban network with different autonomous vehicle penetration rates. Thirdly, the advantage of leading autonomous vehicles is evaluated using entire manual vehicle and leading manual vehicle experiments. Finally, the proximal policy optimization with a clipped objective is compared to the proximal policy optimization with an adaptive Kullback–Leibler penalty to verify the superiority of the proposed hyperparameter. We demonstrate that full automation traffic increased the average speed 1.27 times greater compared with the entire manual vehicle experiment. Our proposed method becomes significantly more effective at a higher autonomous vehicle penetration rate. Furthermore, the leading autonomous vehicles could help to mitigate traffic congestion.

Multisource satellite remote sensing data and the World Ocean Atlas 2018 (WOA18) temperature and salinity dataset have been used to analyze the spatial distribution, variability and possible forcing mechanisms of the upwelling off Manaung Island, Myanmar. Signals of upwelling exist off the coasts of Manaung Island, in western Myanmar during spring. It appears in February, reaches its peak in March and decays in May. Low-temperature (<28.3 °C) and high-salinity (>31.8 psu) water at the surface of this upwelling zone is caused by the upwelling of seawater from a depth below 100 m. The impact of the upwelling on temperature is more significant in the subsurface layer than that in the surface layer. In contrast, the impact of the upwelling on salinity in the surface layer is more significant. Further research reveals that the remote forcing from the equator predominantly induces the evolution of the upwelling, while the local wind forcing also contributes to strengthen the intensity of the upwelling during spring.

In this paper, the impact behavior of Kevlar/glass fiber hybrid composite laminates was investigated by performing the drop weight impact test (ASTM D7136). Composite laminates were fabricated using vacuum bagging process with an epoxy matrix reinforced with twill Kevlar woven fiber and plain glass woven fiber. Four different types of composite laminates with different ratios of Kevlar to glass fiber (0:100, 20:80, 50:50 and 100:0) were manufactured. The effect of Kevlar/glass fiber content on the impact damage behavior was studied at 43J nominal impact energy. Results indicated that hybridization of Kevlar fiber to glass fiber improved the load carrying capability, energy absorbed and damage degree of composite laminates with a slight reduction in deflection. These results were further supported through the damage pattern analysis, depth of penetration and X-ray evaluation tests. Based on literature work, studies that have been done to investigate the impact behaviour of woven Kevlar/glass fiber hybrid composite laminates are very limited. Therefore, this research concentrates on the effect of Kevlar on the impact resistance properties of woven glass fibre reinforced polymer composites.

AbstractThis paper examines the impact of the meridional and vertical structures of a preexisting upstream storm track (PUST) organized by preexisting synoptic-scale eddies on eddy-driven blocking in a nonlinear multi-scale interaction model. In this model, the blocking is assumed, based on observations, to be comprised of barotropic and first baroclinic modes, whereas the PUST consists of barotropic, first baroclinic and second baroclinic modes. It is found that the nonlinearity (dispersion) of blocking is intensified (weakened) with increasing amplitude of the first baroclinic mode of the blocking itself. The blocking tends to be long-lived in this case. The lifetime and strength of blocking are significantly influenced by the amplitude of the first baroclinic mode of blocking for given basic westerly winds (BWWs), whereas its spatial pattern and evolution are also affected by the meridional and vertical structures of the PUST.It is shown that the blocking mainly results from the transient eddy forcing induced by the barotropic and first baroclinic modes of PUST, whereas its second baroclinic mode contributes little to the transient eddy forcing. When the PUST shifts northward, eddy-driven blocking shows an asymmetric dipole structure with a strong anticyclone/weak cyclone in a uniform BWW, which induces northward-intensified westerly jet and storm track anomalies mainly on the north side of blocking. However, when the PUST has no meridional shift and is mainly located in the upper troposphere, a north-south anti-symmetric dipole blocking and an intensified split jet with maximum amplitude in the upper troposphere form easily for vertically varying BWWs without meridional shear.

Abstract Vibro-impact drilling has been proven to be a viable technique for enhancing the Rate of Penetration (ROP) in deep and ultra-deep well drilling. It is essential to study the effects of impact parameters on impact energy and rock-drilling efficiency for impact tool design and operating parameter optimization. In this paper, the influences of impact parameters including impact frequency, dynamic loading amplitude and loading on impact energy were analyzed by theoretical method. Then a full-scale drilling experiment was conducted to study the rock-drilling efficiency. The results are as follows: the optimal frequency is higher than the resonance frequency of the rock. The impact energy increase with the dynamic loading amplitude. The penetration rate at dynamic loading amplitude of 4 KN (0.13137 mm/s) is 38.7% higher than that of 2 KN (0.09473mm/s). When the impact frequency is lower than150 Hz, the rock-drilling efficiency increases with the impact frequency and dynamic loading amplitude. The penetration rate is 0.1051 mm/s at impact frequency of 150 Hz, which is 29.8% higher than that of 10 Hz. The impact energy and penetration rate at square loading waveform are the largest. The impact energy per second at loading waveform of square, sine and triangular is 19.6 J, 12 J and 7.91 J respectively when the impact frequency is set to optimal frequency of impact energy. This study provides a theoretical guidance for the optimization design of vibro-impact drilling technology.

This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of the proposed cooperative dynamic bus lane system with microscopic traffic simulation models. The system creates a flexible bus priority lane that is only activated on demand at an appropriate time with advanced information and communication technologies, which can maximize the use of road space. A decentralized multi-lane cooperative algorithm is developed and implemented in a microscopic simulation environment to coordinate lane changing, gap acceptance, and car-following driving behavior for the connected vehicles (CVs) on the bus lane and the adjacent lanes. The key parameters for the sensitivity study include the penetration rate and communication range of CVs, considering the transition period and gradual uptake of CVs. Multiple scenarios are developed and compared to analyze the impact of key parameters on the system’s performance, such as total saved travel time of all passengers and travel time variation among buses and private vehicles. The microscopic simulation models showed that the cooperative dynamic bus lane system is significantly sensitive to the variations of the penetration rate and the communication range in a congested traffic state. With a CV system and a communication range of 150 m, buses obtain maximum benefits with minimal impacts on private vehicles in the study simulation. The safety concerns induced by cooperative driving behavior are also discussed in this paper.

The different capital structure theories propose the possible asymmetric behavior of capital structure. Thus, this paper empirically investigates whether non-financial Jordanian firms follow symmetrical or asymmetrical adjustment model. Then, an interaction model with the size and profitability (firm characteristics) investigated the impact of low/high profit and small/large size on the adjustment of leverage towards the target leverage ratio. This paper covered the period of 14 years (2002-2015) for a total of 110 companies listed on Amman Stock Exchange (75 industrial and 35 services). Results indicate that although Jordanian firms seek a target leverage ratio, their adjustment towards that target is Asymmetrical and high profitable and large companies tend to adjust faster than low profitable and small size companies.

The paper is focussed on numerical simulations of the fracture of a quasi-brittle specimen due to its impact onto a fixed rigid elastic plate. The failure of the specimen after the impact is modelled in two ways based on the physical discretization of continuum: via physical discrete elements and pseudo-particles. Advantages and drawbacks of both used methods are discussed. The size distribution of the fragments of the broken specimen resulting from physical discrete element model simulation follows a power law, which indicates the ability of the numerical model to identify the fractal nature of the fracture. The pseudo-particle model, on the other side, can successfully predict the kinematics of the fragments of the specimen under impact failure.

Considering the nonlinear property of suspension damping and tire stiffness, a full-vehicle model is built for a heavy-duty truck. A modified preview driver model with nonlinear time delay is inserted into the vehicle model to compute the suitable steering angle of the front wheel and to make the vehicle follow the required route. Next, the finite element model of a five-span continuous curved highway bridge is established, and the bridge’s inherent frequencies and modes are obtained. The curved bridge and the vehicle are coupled by three-directional tire forces, and a three-directional driver–vehicle–bridge interaction model is presented. The presented vehicle model and bridge model are verified by comparing with the published works. The dynamic impact factors of vertical, lateral, and torsional displacements of the bridge are calculated when a vehicle is traversing through the bridge, and the impact factors’ distributions along the bridge are analyzed. The effects of vehicle driving conditions on impact factors are also researched. It is found that the impact factor calculated from the present specification for a straight bridge is smaller than that from the three-directional driver–vehicle–bridge interaction model, and the vertical and torsional impact effects at the third span midpoint are greater than the lateral impact effect.
