Abstract The character of Manokwari City’s coastal waters is strongly influenced by activity on the mainland. The degradation in Sawaibu Gulf’s water quality has an impact on water quality nearby, as well as the waters of the Field Work Center (BLK), Lemon Island, and Tanjung Manggewa, which is part of Doreri Gulf. The purpose of this study was to determine the water quality in Doreri Gulf according on location and season. In February-April (rainy season) and August-October (dry season) 2020, the research was carried out within Doreri Gulf, Manokwari, West Papua. Turbidity, salinity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen are amongst the variables analyzed. Its statistical analyses were performed descriptively using standard deviation and ANCOVA to correlate seasons and locations. Temperature, DO, and pH were highest at location 2; salinity showed highest at location 3; and turbidity were highest at location 1. Low concentrations of DO, pH, and salinity were measured at location 1; temperature showed highest at location 3; and turbidity were highest at location 1. The dry season would have the highest temperature, DO, pH, and salinity concentrations, meanwhile the rainy season had enough highest turbidity. The study confirms that there are no variations in water quality between location of each variable and that seasonal factors comprise the majority of differences in water quality.

The present research was conducted to study seasonal limnological parameters and record composition pattern of aquatic macro-invertebrates of the Rampur Ghol. GRS-BIOS/ASPT index was used to calculate the water quality class, Shannon Weiner diversity index (H’) and Piélou evenness index (e) were used to determine taxa richness of the macroinvertebrates. Altogether 281 individuals of 14 families and 313 individuals of 18 families were recorded in dry season and rainy season, respectively. Similarly, diversity index and evenness index values were recorded 0.98 and 0.85 in dry season; 1.075 and 0.86 in rainy season. On the basis of different aquatic macro-invertebrates, GRS-BIOS/ASPT Index value of four sampling sites fall in class II (moderately polluted), four sampling sites belong to water quality class IIIII (critically polluted) and remaining two sampling sites belong to water quality class III (heavily polluted). Similarly, in rainy season seven sites fall in water quality class II (moderately polluted) and three sampling sites belong to water quality class II-III (critically polluted).Journal of Institute of Science and Technology, 2014, 19(2): 58-64

This study analyzed the hydrochemical characteristics and microbial communities of karst water in Samcheok, Korea, and compared water quality results to identify the seasonal characteristics and hydrogeological connectivity of the study areas of Hamaengbang-ri, Gyogok-ri, Yeosam-ri, and the downtown area of Samcheok. Field survey and water quality analysis were performed in July 2019, February 2020, and April 2020. Hydrochemical analysis of karst water (groundwater and surface water) showed that most samples were comprised of Ca-HCO3 and that water–rock interactions were a dominant factor compared to precipitation and evaporation (crystallization). For seasonal characteristics, water–rock interactions appeared more active in the dry season than in the rainy season. Calcite weathering was dominant in the dry season, whereas dolomite weathering dominated the rainy season. Moreover, the saturation indexes for the dry and rainy seasons were less than and greater than 0, respectively, corresponding to an unsaturation (oversaturation) state; thus, white precipitate distributed in the study areas was deposited in the rainy season. Finally, as a result of analyzing the hydraulic characteristics between regions, hydrogeological similarities were identified between Hamaengbang-ri and Yeosam-ri, and between Gyogok-ri and downtown Samcheok, which suggested hydrogeological connectivity between each of the pairs.

This paper focuses on the capability of organic matter decomposition and inorganic nutrient uptake in the coastal waters of Ca Na bay (Ninh Thuan province) in October, 2018 (the rainy season) and May, 2019 (the dry season).  The results of laboratory experiments on organic decomposition, photosynthesis and nutrient uptake showed that the BODgh and the average values of k- decay rate in coastal waters of the surveyed area are higher in the rainy season compared with the dry season, with the average BODgh values of 5.474 mgO2/l and 4.768 mgO2/l respectively, and the corresponding k-values of 0.183 day-1 and 0.143 day-1. Howver, the half-life decay of organic matter is lower in the rainy season than in the dry season, with the corresponding values of 5.110 days and 5.571 days. In the studied area, the photosynthesis of phytoplankton strongly absorbs nitrate (NO3-), followed by ammonium (NH4+) and phosphate (PO43-). The capability of nutrient uptake for nitrogen and phosphorus components was 9.17 mgN/m3/hour and 0.92 mgP/m3/hour, respectively in the dry season; and 7.31 mgN/m3/hour and 0.63 mgP/m3/hour in the rainy season. The results of the study are favorable condition for calculating the environmental capacity in the coastal waters of Ca Na bay in the future.

The results of three surveys in the O Loan lagoon in the dry season (April 2013) and the rainy season (December 2012 and December 2014) showed that in the rainy season the average concentrations of nutrients in waters (ammonium: 76.8 μgN/l, nitrite: 13.9 μgN/l, nitrate: 55 μgN/l and silicate: 4021 μgSi/l) tended to be higher than those in the dry season (ammonium: 6.0 μgN/l, nitrite: 2.6 μgN/L, nitrate: 35 μgN/l and silicate: 1973 μgSi/l) while phosphate concentraiton did not differ between the two seasons with an average concentration of 66.8 μgP/l in rainy season and 60 μgP/L in dry season. By space, the concentrations of nutrients except nitrate in the lagoon, especially in the southern part, were usually higher than those in the canal connected to the sea. At O Loan lagoon waters, only ammonium (mainly in the southern part of the lagoon) and nitrate (mainly in the canal and southern part of the lagoon) concentrations were higher than the criteria values in the rainy season (December 2014) with pollution coefficient of about 1.2. However, the water quality of O Loan lagoon regarding nutrients always still needs to be monitored because from 1992 to the surveyed time, the concentrations of nutrients containing nitrogen and phosphate had the increasing trend in both seasons.

ABSTRACT Dissolved silicate (DSi) in coastal waters plays a crucial role in phytoplankton growth particularly diatom. This study aimed to determine DSi concentration seasonally in waters of the western coast of South Sulawesi in relation to coastal water quality indicator. Water, chlorophyll-a, and diatom samples were collected from the coastal areas of the Tallo-Makassar, Maros, and Pangkep, in April 2013 (transitional season), June 2013 (dry season), and February 2014 (wet season). Factorial analysis of variance was used to identify significant seasonal and temporal variations, and linear regression was used to test the relationship of chlorophyll-a and diatom abundance to DSi concentrations. The results showed that the DSi concentration was higher in the wet season of 35.2-85.2 µM than in the other seasons (transitional season: 10.8-68.4 µM, dry season: 9.59-24.1 µM). The abundance of diatoms during the transitional season reached ~9.7x107 cell/m3 in the Pangkep river, 2.3x107 cell/m3 in the Tallo river, and 1.3 x 107 cell/m3 in the Maros river. Chaetoceros, Nitzschia, and Rhizosolenia dominated the diatom composition. The mean concentration of chlorophyll-a in the Makassar coastal waters was 4.52±4.66 mg/m3, while in the Maros and Pangkep waters of 1.40±1.06, and 2.72±1.94  mg/m3, respectively. There was no strong linear corelation between DSi and diatom abundances, nor chlorophyll-a. These results suggested that DSi become a non-limiting factor for the diatom growth and potentially reduce the water quality via eutrophication and diatom blooms. Activities displayed by animals are usually cyclic, and fluctuations in behavioural repertoires can be observed on a daily or seasonal timescale. The present study describes daily and seasonal variations in the aerial events – such as leaps, spins and slaps with body parts – by spinner dolphins in Baía dos Golfinhos, Fernando de Noronha Marine National Park, in Brazil. To measure aerial events by dolphins, we compiled and analysed data collected from January 2006 to December 2010. A total of 113,027 aerial events were recorded during 1431 days of land-based daytime observations. Our results show that the frequency of aerial events was positively correlated with the number of dolphins in the bay. The relative frequency of aerial events was higher in the rainy season, when compared with the dry season. Aerial activities also varied throughout the day, with dolphins being more active in the morning, specifically from 8:00 a.m. to 8:59 a.m., regardless of the season.

Objective: This study set out to assess sex differences and seasonal variations in Pediatric Infectious Diseases (PID) admissions. Methods: One year retrospective study of PID admissions was conducted among children aged one month to 15 years. Relevant information retrieved from patients’ hospital records were dates of admission and discharge, age, sex, final PID diagnoses and outcome. Results: Of 1,035 patients’ records assessed, 603 (58.3%) were males and 432 (41.7%) females (p<0.001). Males in ages 1-12 and 13-59 months contributed largely to the gender difference. Over the 12 months period, PID admissions mean was 86.25±21.92, with rainy and dry seasons means of 92.57±20.7 and 77.4±20.9, respectively (p<0.001). Ages 13-19, 60-119 and ≥120 months had significantly higher admissions mean during the rainy season (p<0.001 in each group), while higher admissions occurred among ages 1-12months in dry season (p<0.001). Top six PID managed were malaria, gastroenteritis, pneumonia, septicemia, meningitis and typhoid, and males had higher incidence in all except for typhoid, with only malaria having significant difference (p<0.001). Malaria, septicemia and typhoid incidence were higher significantly during the rainy season, while gastroenteritis occurred more in the dry season. Overall fatality rate was 4.6%; females and males rates were 6.3% and 3.5%, respectively (p=0.661). Rainy and dry seasons mortality means were 5±1.77 and 2.6±0.8, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion: Male children were more vulnerable to PID, with significant higher malaria incidence among them than females. PID incidence and mortality were significantly higher during the rainy season than dry. Malaria and gastroenteritis occurred significantly in rainy and dry seasons, respectively.

Abstract In this study, the influence of the spatial arrangement of shallow wells and pit latrines on water quality was evaluated in clayey soil during dry and rainy seasons, using 123 randomly selected wells. The distance between well and the nearest latrine was measured and the location of the well in the yard was characterized. The colony forming units (CFU/100 mL) of fecal coliforms were quantified, and pH, electrical conductivity (CE) and turbidity were measured. 100% of the wells were located less than 25 m from the latrine, 74.8% were located in the middle of the yard. In the dry season, 42.4% of the samples presented up to 12 CFU/100 mL, and in the rainy season, 84.4% presented up to 139 CFU/100 mL. 56.9% had pH values between 6.5 and 8.5, and 63.4% presented EC values between 50 and 571 μS/cm. In the dry season, 40.7% of the samples had values below 5 NTU, and 59.3% up to 50 NTU. In the rainy season, 86.6% had values between 6 and 300 NTU. Pearson's correlation between all variables was weak. The wells are susceptible to high fecal contamination, although, the clayey soil seems to mitigate the expected high levels of microbial contamination.

Water samples of six sampling sites (two downstream, two abattoir sites and two upstream sites) were analyzed using standard methods to determined and assessed heavy metal content of abattoir effluent on surface water quality of River Katsina-Ala, Benue State, Nigeria for rainy and dry seasons. Rainy season heavy metals results were; Cr6+ (0.032+0.06mg/l); Mn2+ (0.16+0.034mg/l); Cu2+ (0.86 +0.46mg/l); Pb2+(0.006+0.002mg/;Cd2+(0.0023+0.004mg/l) and the dry season results were: Cr6+(0.028+0.007mg/l); Mn2+(0.07+0.05mg/l); Cu2+(0.85+0.16mg/l); Pb2+(0.0030+0.014mg/l); Cd2+(0.0021+0.012mg/). Most heavy metals for both seasons were within the maximum permissible limit set by Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria (1991). The mean concentrations of Zn2+(1.70+0.29 mg/l) for rainy season and Zn2+(1.33+0.23mg/l) dry season were above the control and standard safe limits of < 1mg/l FMEnv (1991) for surface water quality. There was no significance difference (p<0.05) between the means from upstream and downstream sites for both seasons; though significance difference (p<0.05) existed at the abattoir sites. River Katsina –ala is slightly polluted. Heavy metal content from effluents from abattoir contributed to upset the physicochemical balance of the river. Bioaccumulation and bio-magnification of heavy metals may occur from prolong usage of the river water for drinking. It is suggested that the abattoir effluent be treated before discharge into the river to reduce environmental and health hazards.
