Abstract Crop growth and production are strongly affected by abiotic and biotic stresses. Survival rate frequently been used to evaluate rice drought tolerance with a low survival rate of rice plants undergoing drought stress leading to low yields. The aim of this research was to obtain Gorontalo local upland rice variants that are tolerant against drought and shade stresses by considering the morphological and physiological characteristics. The research was conducted in Bulotada Barat Village, Sipatana District, Gorontalo, from January to August 2017. Employing the randomized block design with three replications, the research consisted of two treatment factors. The first factor is the accession, which consists of two tolerant accessions; two moderately tolerant accessions, two drought-sensitive accessions, and two shade-sensitive accessions. The second factor pertains to the drought and shade stresses which consist of drought + 25% shade stress, drought + 50% shade stress, and a control. Irrigation in the drought control specimen was given until inundation reached 1.5 cm. In a drought-stressed situation, irrigation was given when the groundwater reached -30 to -35.9 kPa. The Ponda Merah accessions were the accessions that were tolerant against drought and shade stresses. The morphological characteristics of Gorontalo local upland rice that showed tolerance against drought and shade stresses were longer roots (33.20 cm), heavier dry weight (38.82 gr), a thinner leaf (186,56 cm2.g-1), and a higher yield (4,90 gr.cluster−1). The physiological characteristic of the Gorontalo local upland rice that showed tolerance against drought and shade stresses was the sugar content (0,73 g.g-1) which was higher than the other treatment.

ABSTRACT<br /><br />Upland rice cultivation required specific cultivation, particularly the use of crop varieties that have good water-use efficiency or varieties that are able to adapt to the conditions of limited water availability. The aim of this study was to describe characters of morphology and physiology related to water use efficiency of upland rice varieties. The research was conducted from October 2013 to April 2014 in the greenhouse IPB Experimental Station Cikabayan, Bogor. The research was arranged in randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was 5 upland rice varieties (Inpago 5, Batutegi, Jatiluhur, Inpago 8 and Sarinah). The second factor was 4 irrigation intervals which were 3, 6, 9, and 12 days. Characteristics assosiated with water saving of upland rices were higher plant height, longer panicle, larger roots volume, narrower leaves, higher evapotranspiration, faster flowering phase, greener leaves, higher number of leaves and tillers, heavier dry matter, higher number of grains, heavier 100 grain weight and dry weight of grains. The fraction of available absorbed water at panicle  initiation,  flowering  and  harvesting  were 83.36%, 137.14% and 116.65%, respectively, to obtain dry grains of 3.39 ton ha-1.<br /><br />Keywords: evapotranspiration, water fraction, WUE<br /><br />

This study aimed to determine the effect of the concentration and frequency of Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizer applications and their interactions on the growth and yield of carrot (Daucus carota L.) plants cultivated using pots in the lowland. This research was conducted in the rice fields of Siren Hamlet, East Rumbuk Village, East Lombok sub-district, from March toJune 2019, and arranged according to the Randomized Block Design (RBD) factorial with two factors. The first factor was the concentration of  Bio-EXTRIM and the second factor was the frequency of Bio-EXTRIM applications; each consisted of 3 levels and thus resulted in 9 interractio. The interraction were: concentration of 0.25%  with 4 times application, concentration of  0.25% with 5 times application, concentration of 0.25% with 6 times application, concentration of 0.5% with 4 times application, concentration of 0.5% with 5 times application, concentration of 0.5% with 6 times application, concentration of 1% with 4 times application, concentration of 1% with 5  times application, and concentration of 1% with 6 times application. The results showes that the concentration of Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizer had significant effect on the rate of carrot leaf stalks growth, with concentration of 0.25% had the highest leaf stalk growth rate. The frequency of Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizer applications influenced the dry weight of leaf biomass, the middle diameter of the carrot root and the sugar content of the carrot root. The highest dry weight of leaf biomass and diameter of the tuber were obtained in carrot plants treated with Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizer for 4 times, while the sweetest tubers were obtained in carrot plants treated with Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizer for 6 times. However, there was no interaction between the concentration and frequency of Bio-EXTRIM biofertilizers in influencing the growth and yield of carrots grown in the pots in the lowlands

Weeds can reduce upland rice yields in coastal sandy area. Density and growth of weeds can be controlled and reduced by an intercropping system between upland rice with soybeans. The study aimed to determine the weeds composition change and weeds biomass in various crop proportions of upland rice and soybean under intercropping. The research was conducted from December 2016 until March 2017, at coastal sandy soil of Samas, Bantul, Yogyakarta (8°00’03.5”S and 110°15’20.1”E). This study used a complete randomized block design (RCBD) with one factor and three replications. The treatments were crop proportions of upland rice and soybean under intercropping with 6 levels, such as 100:0 (upland rice monoculture), 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0: 100 (soybean monoculture). The results showed that there was weeds composition changes due to setting crop proportions of upland rice and soybean under intercropping at coastal sandy soil. Weed of sedges, grass, and broadleaf were found throughout the experimental plots, but varied in number and type of weeds among experimental plots. Weeds condition differed among the soybean proportion treatments &lt; 40% and  ≥ 40%. The average community coefficient value was &lt;75% which was dominated by Digitaria nuda and Eragrostis tenella under soybean proportion treatments &lt; 40%, and Ludwigia parviflora and Amaranthus lividus under soybean proportion treatments ≥ 40%. The linear model was established between the increase of soybean proportion to a decrease in dry weight of weeds as Y = -0.6624X + 67.699; R2 = 0.7224).<br /><br />Keywords: crops proportion, intercropping, weeds community<br /><br />

An important aspect in the cultivation of vegetables is the quality of the product to be marketed, free from dirt and damage and the practice of mulching could be an option, but there is scarse information. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of mulching on the production traits of three cultivars of Pak Choi. The experiment was set up during March to May 2013 using a split plot randomized block design, with four replications. Soil cover treatments (white agrotextile, black agrotextile, black plastic, silver plastic, tifton straw and bare soil) were arranged in the plots, and three cultivars of Pak Choi (Green Pak Choi, White Pak Choi and Chingensai Natsu Shomi) in subplots. Height and diameter of shoots, number of leaves, fresh weight of the head and petiole, base diameter, dry weight of stem, petiole, and leaf were evaluated thirty-five days after transplantation. The total dry weight and leaf area were measured, and then we estimated the yield. There was a significant effect of soil cover and cultivar. In general, the cover with synthetic materials showed higher values on production of Pak Choi. The cultivar White Pak Choi was better adapted to the growing conditions, with an average yield of 57.78 t/ha.

ABSTRACT: Cultivars of the genus Nopalea are known in Brazil for being tolerant to cochineal carmine attacks, thus making the cultivation of this genus a promising alternative for mitigating the negative effects of this insect on the production of biomass. With the objectives of characterizing morphologically spineless forage cactus varieties and identify morphological characteristics that may be the focus in spineless forage cactus breeding programs, an experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with 11 treatments and four replications. The variety Alagoas showed the highest values of weight, area and volume of cladodes. The varieties Negro Michoacan F7 and V7, Tamazunchale V12 showed the highest values of the cladode area index, the total volume of cladodes and total fresh mass production. The varieties Negro Michoacan V7 and F7 presented the highest water use efficiency and dry mass yield. Cladode volume showed the highest correlation coefficients with the fresh weight of cladodes. Aiming the release of varieties for biomass production, varieties Negro Michoacan F7, V7 and Tamazunchale V12 may substitute the Miúda variety. The number and cladode area index may be used as criteria for selection of superior varieties in breeding programs.

ABSTRACT The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the highest grain yield of 3 085 kg ha-1 was achieved with application of 98.06 kg ha-1 P2O5 applied at sowing. An application rate of 31.45 kg ha-1 of K2O at sowing achieved the highest grain yield of 2 952 kg ha-1. Together, these application rates of N, P and K resulted in rice grain yield of about 3 000 kg ha-1, which is three times greater than the national average for upland rice. We demonstrate that the use of improved rice varieties matched to the local conditions, and application of appropriate fertilizers, are management practices that can result in significant increases in rice grain yield in Suriname.

Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for rice (Oryza sativa L) yields. This study aimed to evaluate the response of upland rice cultivars to N rate and application times in a randomized block design, in subdivided plots with four replications. The studied factors were five rice cultivars (BRS MG Curinga, BRS Monarca, BRS Pepita, BRS Primavera, and BRS Sertaneja), three application times (100 % at planting, 50 % at planting - 50 % at tillering and 100 % at tillering) and four N rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1). All cultivars responded to increased rates and different times of N application, especially BRS Primavera and BRS Sertaneja, which were the most productive when 50 % N rates were applied at sowing and 50 % at tillering. The response of cultivar BRS Monarca to N fertilization was best when 100 % of the fertilizer was applied at tillering.

A study was conducted in farmer’s field through technology demonstrations during Kharif season of 2018 and 2019 in Subarnapur district of Odisha to recommend the most suited short duration drought tolerant upland rice variety particular to the locality. Six different varieties like Sahabhagi dhan, Mandakini, Jogesh, DRR-44, and DRR-42 & Khandagiri were taken with four replications in Randomized Block Design in both years. Technology demonstration included not only the improved short duration varieties, but also a package of good agronomic practices viz. line sowing, seed treatment with Bavistin, proper fertilization with dose @ 80:40:40 NPK/ha, pre emergence herbicide application with pretilachlor, needful manual weeding and  need based plant protection chemicals. The results of demonstration showed that farmers could increase rice productivity notably by adopting improved variety Sahabhagi dhan and DRR-44. These varieties recorded higher grain yields of 64% and 46%, respectively, and fetched a sum return of Rs 25620 and Rs 25275 over farmers’ local variety Khandagiri.

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Penelitian mengenai jarak tanam dan pemupukan untuk tanaman<br />rosela merah (Hibiscus sabdariffa var. sabdariffa) belum banyak dilakukan.<br />Suatu penelitian, yang dilakukan di Desa Kanyoran, Kecamatan Semen,<br />Kabupaten Kediri pada tahun 2010, bertujuan untuk mendapatkan jarak<br />tanam dan dosis pupuk NPK majemuk yang tepat bagi pertumbuhan serta<br />produksi kelopak bunga rosela merah dan analisis usaha tani. Perlakuan<br />disusun dalam rancangan acak kelompok faktorial dengan 3 ulangan.<br />Sebagai faktor pertama adalah 3 ukuran jarak tanam yang terdiri atas 1) 80<br />x 50 cm; 2) 100 x 50 cm; dan 3) 120 x 50 cm; dan sebagai faktor kedua<br />adalah 5 dosis pupuk NPK majemuk yang terdiri atas a) 30 kg NPK/ha; b)<br />37,50 kg NPK/ha; c) 45 kg NPK/ha; d) 52,50 kg NPK/ha; dan e) 60 kg<br />NPK/ha. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi interaksi antara jarak<br />tanam (100 x 50 cm) dengan dosis pupuk (45 kg NPK/ha) yang<br />memberikan pertumbuhan tinggi tanaman, jumlah cabang produktif,<br />jumlah buah, bobot kelopak bunga berbiji, bobot biji, bobot basah kelopak<br />bunga tanpa biji, dan bobot kelopak bunga kering maksimal, masing-<br />masing sebesar 186,63 cm; 16,33 cabang; 117,00 buah; 41,33 kg/petak;<br />16,17 kg/petak; 26,67 kg/petak; dan 2,35 kg/petak (652,75 kg/ha). Usaha<br />tani rosela merah memberikan keuntungan sebesar Rp 10.420.000/ha<br />dengan B/C = 1,49. The results showed that there<br />was an interaction between plant spacing (100 x 50 cm) with fertilizer<br />dosage (45 kg NPK/ha), which resulted in plant height, number of<br />productive branches, number of fruits, weight calyx with seed, seed<br />weight, fresh weight of seedless calyx, and maximum dry weight of calyx,<br />each amounting to 186.63 cm; 16.33 branches; 117.00 fruits; 41.33<br />kg/plot; 16.17 kg/plot; 26.67 kg/plot; and 2.35 kg/plot (652.75 kg/ha),<br />respectively. Red roselle farm provided a gain of Rp10,420,000/ha with a<br />B/C of 1.49. Dioscorea is potentially used as staple food to support food security. The research was aimed to determine the effect of stake length and time of  stem twining  on  the growth of Dioscorea sansibarensis Pax. The experiment was conducted  in  Purwodadi Botanic Garden from December 2014 until May 2015 using split plot randomized block design consisted of two factors, i.e. the stake length and time of stem twining. The stake length was the main plot consisted of 150 cm, 100 cm and 50 cm above soil surface and without stake (control). The time of stem twining as subplots, i.e. stem twined early, twined at the time of 4 leaves stage, and twined at 8 leaves stage. Each combination of the treatments was replicated three times. The results showed that there was significant effect on the stake length  and the time of stem twining treatments on the plant growth and yield. The stake  length of 150 cm treatment produced the highest fresh tuber and total plant dry weight, i.e., 257.24 g and 132.77 g per plant, respectively. On the contrary, the plant without stake produced the lowest fresh tuber and  total dry weight of plant, i.e., 112.10 g and 48.65 g per plant, respectively.<br /><br />Keywords: biomass,leaf area, photosyntesis, tuber weight
