Abstract Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra Province, has Simarjarungjung Nature Tourism area which is one of the attractions along the north side of Lake Toba. The Simarjarunjung area is an alternative destination for tourists because this area is a location that can be used as a vantage point to see the landscape of Lake Toba, as well as a stopover location for tourists visiting various attractions in the Lake Toba surrounding area. The objective of this study is to analyze potential of the natural tourism objects and feasibility level of developing the natural attractions in the Simarjarunjung area. The analytical method used in this study refers to the guidelines for Operational Area Analysis of Natural Tourism Objects and Attractions (henceforth referred to as ADO-ODTWA) issued by the Director General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation (henceforth referred to as Dirjen PHKA) in 2003. Data are collected through surveys by direct observation and interviews using questionnaires to visitors. The Simarjarunjung Nature Tourism Area has several potential natural attractions, first, beauty of the natural scenery where visitors can look at the view of Lake Toba and green hills surrounding it and experience the microclimate of the mountains with cool, clean and comfortable air. Second; potential diversity of exotic flora and fauna such as pine (Pinus merkussi), red shoots (Syzygium oleana), various orchid plants, various flower plants, especially miana (Coleus scutellarioides), long-tailed monkey (M fascicularis) and eagle (Haliastur sp); and the third, natural recreational rides such as camping ground and parks. The results show that the potential objects in the Simarjarunjung Nature Tourism area are classified into “feasible to develop” category into tourism with a feasibility index of 79.56.

Of the three species of Brachiopoda found, two, Magellania cranium and M. septigera, are found in the British list. The third species, Mühlfeldtia truncata, has not, as far as I can discover, previously been recorded from so high a latitude, Turton's Torbay locality being very doubtful.

The King’s Quoit dolmen perches precariously halfway up a headland in south Wales. Its location has been an enigma since Victorian times. The monument builders chose not the spectacular sea views of the south-facing slope, but the apparently more mundane inland vista of the north side, with a near horizon comprising a low ridge on the far side of a small valley, now a beach. Previous research by the author into the astronomical possibilities at this site have revealed horizon indicators for cardinal north, in the form of earth mounds which appear to have marked the lower culminations of Deneb and Vega, as they dipped down to the horizon and rose again during the third and fourth millennium BCE. This has led to another discovery, namely, that a still traceable route way of roads and footpaths leads north from this monument across Pembrokeshire, passing close by several Neolithic monuments and settlements as it does so, before reaching a sheltered bay and another, south facing, dolmen on the north coast. The southern end of this possible ancient trackway is located on Carmarthen Bay, and the northern end, on Cardigan Bay. Both bays encompass a lengthy stretch of relatively sheltered coastal and estuarine water.

Publication of a monument discovered at Saqqara, belonging to Djoser and, specifically, to his pyramid complex. This limestone piece with reliefs on three of its sides and an unfinished rough-cut back and top had been broken into two parts. The decoration is composed of snakes, jackals, lions/lionesses, serekks and the Horus name Ntry-ht. Three locations for the original emplacement of the monument are suggested: the hebsed court, the north side of the pyramid complex, and within a ceremonial gateway. This unique monument has no parallel in the Third Dynasty. Its discovery may change suggestions for the reconstruction of the pyramid complex of Djoser.

Vindonissa, the only Roman legionary fortress in Switzerland, was occupied during the first century A.D. to guard the frontier against Germany. Because of the exactly defined period of habitation the pottery of this place is of special importance. The legionary fortress at Vindonissa is situated on a plateau between two rivers and on the north side the ground slopes steeply down to the R. Aare. Some time after the foundation of the fortress, which is probably to be dated shortly after the Varus catastrophe of A.D. 9, perhaps after the third decade of the first century, the soldiers began to throw all the rubbish of the fortress down this slope.

A collared urn was found during the course of a watching-brief on the raised beach on the north side of Oban bay. Post-excavation analysis has succeeded in throwing some further light on the chronology of this type of urn and possibly on some elements of the funerary ritual associated with its burial. The same watching-brief also revealed the site of a truncated pit of medieval date, filled with fire-cracked stones.
