Abstract In the developing world, practical steps are taken to provide adequate, sustainable housing, especially for low-income people within technological age capabilities in construction by searching for new techniques of building technology to meet that goal. In the Arab countries, contemporary housing design is particularly effective because it is the primary unit of the contemporary urban fabric and the basic cell that constitutes most of the city’s area. So the following research questions are discussed in this study: What are the challenges facing contemporary sustainable housing design in specific affordable housing for the lower-income groups? What is the potential for sustainable building technology to meet that goal considering the social and economic dimension of the COVID 19 pandemic? What are the ambitions that they set out to achieve in that house? To emphasize the essential role of sustainable building technology and techniques in acquiring and implementing different goals and actual needs of all strata of society.

<p>Public housing in Kuala Lumpur was introduced by the government as a means of replacing informal settlements and providing housing for the lower income. Government subsidies often cover some of the costs of public housing to help keep it affordable and at the lower end of house prices. To help meet the low cost agenda, public house designs are often kept to a minimal standard in Malaysia, removing low income Malay dwellers from their ideal image of home. In the long run, signs of neglect in the public houses are reflected in the lack of care and maintenance from dwellers, vandalism and more.   This thesis proposes that good, homely architectural design practices suited to the dweller can help encourage emotional ties between dwellers (low income families) and the dwelling (public houses). Its aim is to investigate potential architectural design approaches to tackle such problems in future Kuala Lumpur public houses.  This raises the question of which homely architectural design strategies might be best utilised in the Kuala Lumpur public housing environment. The thesis begins by exploring the meaning of home in relation to both dwellers and dwelling before then identifying ‘homely’ architectural design practices suited to the Malay community. In the context of public houses, this research investigation identifies privacy, environmental comfort, security and safety as homely aspects that are most often lacking in public housing design, contributing to a less homely environment. To enhance the homely attributes of public houses, the thesis proposes ways to restore homely qualities of spaces in the public house, drawing from these three aspects in order to arrive at design opportunities best suited to the lifestyle of its dwellers.</p>

Recent UK government objectives are focused on creating sustainable communities to improve quality of life. Housing is a key issue to consider in delivering healthy and attractive communities. In certain areas of housing, lack of supply and consequent problems of affordability have created persistent social and economic pressure. For sustainable communities, housing should be easily available, high-quality, economic, ecological, aesthetically designed and comfortable, thus better suiting the needs of a person. Moreover, the housing must be affordable according to the local and national situation. This article addresses the issue of sustainable communities from the perspectives of housing markets and socio-economics. The study focuses on key factors that are believed to contribute to the currently existing housing situation, assessing the impact of regulated socio-economics upon the sustainable housing and communities. The study also reviews past and current government initiatives and policies relevant to housing and regeneration in the UK. The article finishes with the interview-based study carried out in the Northwest with a reflection on the notion of the sustainable communities plan and its eight key components, the housing market and its dependence on the economic, the social and political environment and it offers recommendations for the further sustainable communities' development within the UK.

<p class="ISI-Paragraf">Among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is a goal to create cities and settlements that are safe, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. In the context of inclusive and sustainable development, all citizens have rights on the city, especially in the context of housing as one of the primary needs that have to be addressed and prioritized by government. All of urban residents, including low-income and urban dwellers, have equal rights to live a decent life, for affordable housing, for healthy residential environment and for equal distribution of public services and basic infrastructure. In this context, the existence of urban kampongs, which dominate urban-housing areas and provide residential area for many low-income communities, needs attention in urban development. The purpose of this study is to formulate generic strategies towards urban kampong quality improvement, both socially and environmentally. Using mix-method (spatial analysis, content analysis, dan SWOT analysis) this paper explains the distribution and characteristics of urban kampongs in Bandung city and formulate strategies to improve the quality of urban kampong environments towards inclusive and sustainable development. This study shows that more than 55% of urban kampong in Bandung belong to the category of slums area. The results of this study concluded that the sustainability status on the socio-economic dimension is still relatively higher compared to physical dimension. This study also formulated strategies both from physical and socio-economic aspects based on case studies in three urban kampong areas in the city of Bandung.</p>

Este artigo relata a experiência de concepção de um evento orientada pelo Design Estratégico e baseada nos princípios da sustentabilidade. Trata-se de um congresso voltado ao público escolar, cujo objetivo central consistia em levar o interesse pela pesquisa científica aos professores e estudantes de ensino fundamental tendo como pano de fundo a temática da sustentabilidade. A equipe de Design buscou um alinhamento com práticas de sustentabilidade nos âmbitos social, econômico e ambiental, o que determinou as estratégias projetuais adotadas, as ações e os materiais desenvolvidos para o evento. Como resultados práticos desta atuação viu-se a formação de uma rede de atores envolvidos com a prática da sustentabilidade, o que levou à qualificação de ambientes educativos e ao compartilhamento de habilidades e conhecimentos. O caso apresenta a abordagem do Design Estratégico enquanto articuladora de redes através do entendimento sistêmico de projeto, o qual foi direcionado para o engajamento de atores que estariam fora de um projeto tradicional de evento, reforçando o viés de sustentabilidade social. O Design Estratégico, neste caso, converge com a abordagem do Design Social na medida em que se destaca uma preocupação social, sobretudo na inclusão de grupos produtivos de baixa renda para a confecção de produtos para o evento.ABSTRACTThis paper reports a Strategic Design driven event, based on principles of network and sustainability. This event was focused on students from public schools, and its main objective was to take an interest in scientific research on sustainability to teachers and elementary students. The design team sought alignment with sustainability practices in social, economic and environmental spheres, which determined the adopted design strategies, actions and materials developed for the event. As results, this actions saw the formation of a network engaged and involved with the practice of sustainability, which led to qualifying educational environments and the sharing of skills and knowledges. The case shows Strategic Design as a network articulator through a systemic understanding of the design practice, focusing on engaging actors not traditionally involved in the process, thus reinforcing the social sustainability dimension. Strategic Design, in this case, converges with the Social Design approach when it highlights social concerns, especially on including low income productive groups for the manufacture of products for the event.

Abstract Housing sector plays an essential role in the sustainable development of the countries; however, there are significant problems in terms of its ability to access which promotes the occurrence of solutions that guide the housing deficit reduction as well as economic savings and natural resources preservation. One key strategic would be the use of social housing as a mechanism to ensure a decent house accessed by vulnerable population. The general housing design requires satisfying characteristics of indoor environmental comfort, arising the need outlook technical solutions. This research aims to propose functional and hygrothermal improvements for social housing located in a temperate continental climate zone in The Sierra region of Ecuador. The methodology was focused on energy simulations using Design Builder software and comparing the results with the application of passive bioclimatic recommendations. In addition, based on the quantitative housing deficit this research achieves qualitative contributions in order to improve the living conditions of low-income population whose get access to social housing in Ecuador. An experimental case study, located in Azogues a canton of the province of Cañar, has been selected for the simulation analysis which belongs to a housing governmental program named Manuela Espejo promoted by the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and special designed for people with disabilities. The research has an applicative nature approach, with a sectional scope and explanatory depth, based on primary and secondary information sources; data collection techniques were social perception surveys used to determine comfort levels of the social housing users. The results show, based on the energy simulations carried out, improvements in terms of habitability conditions and an architectural proposal compiles passive bioclimatic recommendations focused on the design of social housing in Ecuador. Therefore, this research contributes to the implementation of new social housing plans that not only would help to reduce the housing deficit, but also contribute to improving the housing indoor environmental comfort perceived by the users.

This paper discusses the development of design concepts for a row of typical bamboo houses, including the layout configuration and the function/aesthetics properties that are important from an architectural perspective. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of bamboo in investigations of structural and sustainability benefits and to highlight key research ideas that are important for industrialized production and cultural systems. The development of bamboo housing systems can advance efforts directed at securing home ownership for low-income families through lowering the construction costs to levels that are within their budgets. This paper aims to demonstrate approaches for using bamboo as a structural material for low-income and affordable housing. Bamboo housing can improve the financial stability and economic sustainability of low-income families. This paper presents a review of examples of vernacular architecture and building elements and then highlights the design of two bamboo-structure residential houses based on bio-climatic design strategies.

Nearly one-third of the Scottish population is struggling to heat their home properly today. There is an urgent need for the delivery of low-energy affordable homes. However, the homebuilding industry has no systematic way to deliver such unconventional homes, although the UK government has set out a bold “green” target that all newly-built homes be carbon neutral by 2016. Accordingly, this paper explores the status quo of today's affordable homes being built in Scotland; and secondly, it extends the scope to the review of successfully commercialized low- to zero-energy affordable housing developments in Canada. This study emphasizes the significant impact of design choices on the delivery of low- to zero-energy affordable housing, including housing orientations and configurations; construction materials and systems, including renewable energy technologies; and internal planning, with due consideration to the time-related sun positions and the internal space day-lighting and heat gain potentials. In addition, the paper argues that the absence of clear definitions as to housing quality and affordability, and the lack of industry capacity for technical knowledge learning activities, are potential obstacles that limit the spread of sustainable zero-carbon homes in Scotland today. Moreover, the effect of the design charrette approach being practiced in Canada on the homebuilding decision making process was reviewed, with the aim of providing a base for further discussion on the applicability of Canadian low-energy affordable housing design techniques to sustainable zero carbon homes of the future in Scotland.

Since the beginning of human life, housing problems are the most important matters of his life and with the expansion of urban life, importance in terms of the needs of mental, psychological and physical users has been doubled. The housing subject has been always interest to architects from various aspects and attempts made to improve affordable housing, attempts to improve relations or social housing, or seek to identify and develop the cultural origins, economics, management and other macro policies. On the other hand due to the growing population and consequently expand need to housing, and also identifying of residential needs of people in different dimensions necessity of this research is doubled. This study assuming more than half of the land in our cities is devoted to residential use and also lack of attention to sustainable development in the Residential Buildings the purpose of this study sustainable urban development and the achievement of sustainable affordable housin pattern.This study focuse on descriptive- analytical and based on library research seeks to answer this question: What are the criteria for designing sustainable housing in Iran? Thus, after the introduction, do analysis and commentary related content. Conclusion suggest that in addition to aspects of sustainability (economic, social and environmental), factors such as social, cultural and attention to the flexibility according to Iranian households, design sustainable housing should be considered.

Due to rapid urbanization and the recent growing influx of migrants from politically fragile states, cities are now faced with an impending housing problem. In developing countries like Nigeria, the impacts of the housing problem, which include economic, social (humanitarian), and environmental crises, are evident. Recently, sustainability has become a central theme for public discussion, not only in expanding housing for the growing population but also in improving the quality of residential livelihoods of low-income households without compromising the housing needs of future generations. So far, there have been numerous studies conducted on sustainable housing in Nigeria, touching on sustainability in housing but mostly from the professionals’ point of view. Therefore, a document content analysis to generate success criteria and a survey for household validation were conducted. Results show that security ranks the highest, and other criteria of importance include accessibility, adaptability, utility, technology, community, affordability, and acceptability. Hence, the study concludes that social and environmental sustainability in housing should enhance household satisfaction by ensuring the security and welfare of its residents, adapt to its immediate environment, be acceptable, be supported with social amenity to integrate the community through participation, and, finally, manage household utility efficiently.

Affordable housing is a program that introduced by the government to improve housing affordability which ensure every income earner group could afford houses, especially for low-income households. Affordable sustainable housing project has no clear definition so far but the concept of needs, which seeks to ensure that the essential needs of the poor are adequately met; and the need for addressing every limitation arising from the use of technology and activities of social elements affecting the environment’s ability to meet the present and future needs, may to consider to define as general idea. This paper its to discuss the barrier factor on delivering affordable housing project. By using the latest 10 years of publication for extensive literature review methodology and a questionnaire generated from the literature review further sending to 50 respondents who experienced PR1MA project which this perhaps may contribute in enhancing the existing knowledge.
