Abstract Efforts to improve the quality of local chickens, especially free-range chickens, are carried out by improving genetic traits, namely through a strict selection method to produce broilers with the name of Superior Local Broilers (ALPU) and laying purposes with Arab Kampung Chickens (Kamaras). This study was conducted to obtain information on the comparison of ALPU and Kamaras embryo development for genetic improvement as the basis for further research. This study used 105 ALPU hatching eggs and 105 Kamaras hatching eggs, the observations were carried out for 21 days. Eggs were collected for 7 days and then put into the incubator, then observed every day by breaking each 5 ALPU and Kamaras eggs to see 7 parameters of embryo development in the form of: body weight, body length, head circumference, neck length, beak length, wing length and leg length. The results showed that there was no significant developmental difference between ALPU and Kamaras embryos. However, the embryo weight and beak length of Kamaras tended to be larger than those of ALPU, while the head circumference and wing length of ALPU tended to be larger than that of Kamaras. In conclusion, the embryonic development between ALPU and Kamaras showed relatively similar embryo development during the hatching period.

Local ducks in Indonesia there are several kinds, for example Tegal ducks, Magelang ducks and Pengging duck each having characteristics different somatometri. Research on somatometri ducks that includes body weight, leg length, beak length, wing length, body length, and long-neck ducks important to know somatometri of each duck. This study aimed to analyze the differences somatometri at Tegal ducks, Magelang ducks and Pengging duck, which includes weight, leg length, beak length, wing length, body length, and a long neck. Ducks were used in this study maintained in the Central Breeding and Raising Ducks Work Unit Non Ruminant Livestock Banyubiru, Ambarawa. The study was conducted by measuring somatometri of each six monthold ducks. Duck samples taken from three different types of ducks that Tegal duck, Pengging duck and Magelang duck, of each type of sample taken many ducks as 6 tails. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the differentiating factor is the type of duck. If the data were analyzed contained a real difference, then do a further test using the test Least Significant Differences (LSD) at 95% confidence level. The results showed that there was no significant difference in all parameters of the study. Conclusion of the study three types of ducks will have somatometri not unlike that includes, weight, leg length, beak length, wing length, body length and the length of the neck. This study aimed to determine the effect of ovaprim hormone, aromatase inhibitor and pituitary on the quality of the catfish eggs (Clarias gariepinus). Experimental Design used was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments, each with three replications. Treatment A: ovaprim; treatment B: Aromatase inhibitors, treatment C: hypophysis and treatment D: Control. The results showed that the difference in treatment gave highly significant effect on fertilization and hatching eggs but no significant effect on the survival rate of larvae. Aromatase inhibitor hormone was the best because it provided highly significant effect on fertilization (92.66%), hatchability of eggs (95%), and surviva rate (81.33%) of fish larvae.   Keywords : Clarias gariepinus. Maffucci syndrome is a rare congenital, non-hereditary condition characterised by presence of multiple enchondromas and haemangiomas. Enchondromatous lesions affecting epiphysial growth plates can lead to angular deformities and leg-length discrepancy in the lower limb. We describe a 12-year-old girl with monomelic Maffucci syndrome affecting her left lower limb. She presented with progressive genu valgus deformity of her left knee. This caused her to limp during her gait and was a cosmetic dissatisfaction. The deformity affected her quality of life. She underwent a supracondylar distal femoral corrective osteotomy with a successful clinical outcome and restoration of her gait and cosmetic deformity.

Abstract Theoretical and applied aspects of the concept of using biomimetic protective coatings GREEN ARTICLE (ARTIficial cutiCLE) in the poultry industry, namely in the production of table and hatching eggs, are developed. The basic matrix component of the protective coatings GREEN ARTICLE is chitosan, an environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and harmless material. It is experimentally proved that electrochemical and ultrasonic technologies for modifying a solution of chitosan in peroxide compounds (peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide) with nanoparticles of oxides like titanium, iron, zinc, and metals, such as titanium, copper, and calcite, allow to create protective coatings of double action in accordance with the technologies: (a) extending the shelf life of table eggs, food green article (FGA) and (b) preventing contamination of hatching eggs with pathogenic microflora, increasing the hatchability of eggs, and the quality of chicken, hatching green article (HGA). In the technology of storing table eggs, artificial cuticles based on chitosan FGA are characterized by the following characteristics: increased thickness of 6–10 µm, low gas and moisture permeability, and high biocidal activity against pathogenic bacteria and viruses. It is shown that the use of FGA technology in the production of table eggs can extend the period of transportation and storage of products by 33–35 days at a temperature of 24°C and maintained a grade A (Haugh unit = 71–60) through the entire 35 days period. The technology HGA reduces the rate of contamination of hatching eggs with pathogenic microflora by 99.29–99.7%, while increasing the egg hatching rate by 2.3–11.6% compared to the control, depending on the cross of the poultry and the storage conditions of the hatching eggs. It is important that these technologies have a great prospect for application in countries that develop green technologies for the production of poultry products.

The chapter discusses body asymmetry occurring as an isolated clinical feature or as part of well-characterized syndromes. The term “lateralized overgrowth” has been recently introduced to describe conditions characterized by disproportionate growth of one side of the body that might be caused by hemihyperplasia and/or hemihypertrophy. The chapter also provides a brief clinical overview of the major syndromes associated with lateralized overgrowth and discusses the molecular anomalies causing this disorder. Prognosis of conditions characterized by lateralized overgrowth varies according to the underlying cause. Treatment and management of conditions characterized by lateralized overgrowth mainly focus on tumor surveillance and management of eventual difference of limb length. Leg-length discrepancy can be associated with significant morbidity and can negatively influence the quality of life.

Two experiments were carried out to study the effect of nutrition on embryo development in two periods in superovulated ewes (Expt 1) and on oocyte developmental capacity during the late follicular phase (Expt 2). In Expt 1, a lower superovulation response in terms of animals ovulating (P < 0.05), ovulation rate per ewe ovulating (P = 0.1) and number of good quality embryos per animal treated (P < 0.07) was noted in ewes fed an ad libitum diet compared with ewes offered control (1.5 times the daily maintenance energy requirements, 1.5 x M) or low energy (0.5 x M) diets. Nutrition also modified the morphological and functional quality of the oocytes and embryos recovered. Thus, 92% of day 4 embryos recovered from ewes offered the control diet were classified as good embryos, compared with 70 and 82% of those recovered from ewes offered the ad libitum and low diets, respectively (P < 0.05). Ewes offered the ad libitum diet had a greater percentage of poorly developed embryos compared with ewes offered the control or low diets (P < 0.05). Ewes fed the low diet tended to have more non-fertilized oocytes than ewes offered the control diet (P = 0.09). Diet of recipient ewes to which good quality embryos were transferred on day 4 did not affect embryo quality, when assessed 12 days later (day 16 of pregnancy). However, recipient diet affected prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) production in vitro, and uterine tissue that originated from recipient ewes on the low diet secreted more PGF(2alpha) relative to uterine tissue that originated from recipients on the control diet (P < 0.05). In Expt 2, fewer total (P < 0.05) and good quality (P < 0.01) oocytes and a lower percentage of good quality oocytes (P < 0.01) were obtained from superovulated ewes offered the ad libitum diet compared with ewes offered the low diet. In addition, cleavage rate tended to be higher (51 versus 35%, P = 0.09) in ewes offered the low diet compared with ewes offered the ad libitum diet. In conclusion, changes in diet can affect the quality of the oocyte and embryo in superovulated sheep. A lower superovulation response and a decrease in the quality of oocytes and embryos indicate that ad libitum diets are highly detrimental for superovulatory programmes when compared with low and control diets. In addition, the results from the present study indicate that a low energy diet during early embryo development increased the uterine production in vitro of PGF(2alpha) which could lead to a poor uterine environment thereby compromising the development of the embryo.

To evaluate the effect of bovine oviductal fluid (OF) supplementation during in vitro culture of bovine embryos on their development and quality, in vitro-produced zygotes were cultured in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF; negative control; C–) supplemented with OF or 5% fetal calf serum (positive control; C+). Embryo development was recorded on Days 7–9 after insemination and blastocyst quality was assessed through cryotolerance, differential cell counting of the inner cell mass and trophectoderm, and gene expression. OF was added to the culture medium at concentrations ranging from 0.625% to 25%. The higher OF concentrations (5%, 10% and 25%) had a detrimental effect on embryo development. Lower OF concentrations (1.25% and 0.625%) supported embryo development until Day 9 (27.5%) and produced higher-quality blastocysts, as reflected by their cryotolerance (53.6% and 57.7% survival at 72 h, respectively, vs 25.9% in C+) and total cell number (mean (± s.e.m.) 165.1 ± 4.7 and 156.2 ± 4.2, respectively, vs 127.7 ± 4.9 in C– and 143.1 ± 4.9 in C+). Consistent with these data, upregulation of the water channel aquaporin 3 (AQP3) mRNA was observed in blastocysts supplemented with 1.25% OF compared with C– and C+. Serum supplementation resulted in a reduction in the expression of glucose and lipid metabolism-related genes and downregulation of the epigenetic-related genes DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) and insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor (IGF2R). In conclusion, in vitro culture with low concentrations of OF has a positive effect on the development and quality of bovine embryos.
