Abstract Whip-poor-wills (Caprimulgus vociferus) showed significantly higher levels of locomotory, vocal, and nest activity during twilight and bright moonlight than under moonless conditions. Field observations and nest record card data indicated that Caprimulgus species usually synchronize their reproductive cycle with the lunar cycle. Hatching tends to occur during young waxing moons, presumably so that moonlight-enhanced foraging will be at a maximum while the dependent nestlings are an energy burden on the parents. Observations of foraging Whip-poor-wills suggest they are primarily visually oriented, unlike the bats (Chiroptera).

The reproductive cycle of male wall lizard Podarcis vaucheri (Boulenger, 1905) living in Djurdjura mountain, was analyzed from April till October 2014. Its seasonal mixed-type cycle was characterized by three phases: sexual activity, quiescence and recrudescence. After the emergence of lizard from hibernation an intense sexual activity was observed in spring (April, May, and June) at which the testicular weight and seminiferous tubules diameter reached their maximal values. At this period, spermiogenesis was also maximal and the spermiation allowed the release of a large quantity of spermatozoa in both the seminiferous tubules and epididymis lumen. In July, a short sexual resting period followed, during which the testes mass and seminiferous tubules diameter decreased. Spermatogonia and some primary spermatocytes were observed against the wall of seminiferous tubules. The recrudescence period (August, September and October) was characterized by a progressive increase of the testis weight and seminiferous tubules diameter. Spermatocytogenesis began in August, and spermiogenesis occurred in September and October, before the diapause period. But the presence of spermatozoids was not signaled in the epididymis lumen. Field observations and microscopic evidence of testis showed that both sexes reproduced synchronously during spring and early summer.

The effects of the xenoestrogen 4-nonylphenol (4NP) on endocrine and metabolic homeostasis in the reef building coral, Pocillopora damicornis were investigated. The aim was to understand if ubiquitous nonylphenol ethoxylate contaminants in the marine environment result in altered homeostatic function. Coral colonies were chronically exposed (6 weeks) to a sublethal concentration (1 ppb) of 4NP and sampled over the coral’s lunar reproductive cycle. Although activity of steroidogenic enzymes [cytochrome P450 (CYP) 17, CYP 19, and 3-β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase] and the conjugation enzyme glutathione-S-transferase was not altered, significant increases in the activity of the steroid clearing enzyme UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) were observed. The natural fluctuation of UGT activity with the lunar cycle was replaced with consistently high UGT activity throughout the reproductive cycle during 4NP exposure. No effect of 4NP on the reverse reaction, mediated by β-glucuronidase, was observed. Thus, 4NP shifts the UGT:β-glucuronidase ratio toward greater clearance at points in the lunar cycle where retention of compounds is typically favored. Additionally, 4NP reduced activity of the steroid regeneration enzyme steroid sulfatase, further shifting the system toward clearance rather than regeneration. These data imply that environmentally relevant levels of 4NP may be impacting the reproductive health of corals and threatening the persistence of coral reefs.

The reproductive cycle of the saucer scallop Amusium balloti was examined at three sites spanning a large part of the north-south range of the species on the western coast of Western Australia. Variations in gonad dry weight were highly cyclical, with minimum gonad weights in Shark Bay (25�S) occurring between January and March and maximum gonad weights occurring around July or August. The pattern of variation in gonad weight at the Abrolhos Islands (29�S) and Fremantle (32�S) was similarly cyclical, but the times of high and low gonad weights occurred at similar times at both sites and approximately two months later than in Shark Bay. The variations in gonad weight were associated with large variations in meat weight and condition, which would need to be considered in any yield analyses of fisheries for this species. Gonad dry weight increased rapidly following the end of the resting period, and histological examination showed that gonads contained mature gametes within one to two months of the end of the resting period. Although gonad weights continued generally to increase over a period of three to four months following the end of the resting period, variations in gonad weight during this period indicated that partial spawning may be occurring before the time of peak gonad weight. Residual gametes were observed in the ciliated ducts of scallop gonads within one to two months of the start of the rapid increase in gonad weight until the onset of the resting period, indicating that partial spawning was occurring throughout this time. Estimation of the settlement dates of recruits supported the conclusion that spawning commenced shortly after gonads began their rapid weight increase and suggested that spawning may follow a lunar cycle. Partial spawning provides multiple opportunities for larvae to develop in environments conducive to high larval survival and may be an important factor in determining recruitment success.

Predation of offspring is the main cause of reproductive failure in many species, and the mere fear of offspring predation shapes reproductive strategies. Yet, natural predation risk is ubiquitously variable and can be unpredictable. Consequently, the perceived prospect of predation early in a reproductive cycle may not reflect the actual risk to ensuing offspring. An increased variance in investment across offspring has been linked to breeding in unpredictable environments in several taxa, but has so far been overlooked as a maternal response to temporal variation in predation risk. Here, we experimentally increased the perceived risk of nest predation prior to egg-laying in seven bird species. Species with prolonged parent-offspring associations increased their intra-brood variation in egg, and subsequently offspring, size. High risk to offspring early in a reproductive cycle can favour a risk-spreading strategy particularly in species with the greatest opportunity to even out offspring quality after fledging.

The article describes content of original and relevant but virtually forgotten thesis of V.V. Voronov on lighting of production site interiors by means of overhead natural (using three types of skylights) and artificial illumination, in order to elaborate scientific methodology for architectural design of more qualitative luminous environment on the basis of comprehensive approach and enhanced criteria framework of its evaluation using light engineering parameters. The thesis is unique in terms of the scope and quality of field and laboratory observations which are reflected not only in the text but also in the graphical attachments, namely photos, figures, schemes, drawings, charts, nomograms, and diagrams accompanied by specific measured or calculated parameters. The first part of the thesis contains theoretical basics and results of field observations conducted by different methods. This second part is the exposition of chapter 3 of the V.V. Voronov’s candidate thesis (1985). It describes the methodology for and the results of the experiments by means of planar and volumetric light simulation using the architectural lighting simulating assembly (chamber) which were conducted in MARKHI in 1970–1985.

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of outdoor lighting in the central part of Tyumen (with consideration of conducted field observations) and prospects of its development on the basis of the general plan of illumination of the central part of the city being under design. Main provisions of this general plan as well as methodological principles and assessment criteria of design solutions illustrat-ed by photographs, schemes and visualisations of the illuminated objects are described.

INDUSTRIAL BASED CURRICULUM IMPLEMETATION AT SMK MITRA INDUSTRI MM2100 CIKARANG-BEKASIThis study aims to obtain a fact-based picture in the form of data and information regarding the implementation of an industry-based curriculum at SMK Mitra Industri MM2100. This study uses a qualitative method, which is to make a complex and comprehensive picture with detailed descriptions from the eyes of the informants to produce a comprehensive exposure based on clear and real findings, events, processes and results related to the implementation of an industry-based curriculum. Data obtained through interviews, field observations and documentation studies. Based on data analysis, the following results are obtained: 1). The curriculum development model used at SMK Mitra Industri MM2100, is a model of curriculum development that is problem-centered by integrating several disciplines to form a concept of attitudes, skills and knowledge in accordance with the demands and needs of the industry which are oriented to the vision, mission and goals of the school. 2). The learning process at SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 uses a block system, which is designed to be oriented towards the merging of instruction and construction, so that the learning process approach refers to the dual base program to fully and fully cultivate industrial work patterns. 3). Challenges and obstacles in the implementation of industrial-based curriculum in SMK Mitra Industri MM2100 in the form of not wanting to change the principles of school/mental blockage, focusing on knowledge, school target is focus on graduation of students, not on the distribution of work at industries and bad networking with industry which can be overcome through socialization to all elements of the school and stakeholders involved.
