Abstract Objectives Moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) is widespread and a persistent public health problem in developing countries. Currently, the management approach of MAM is focused on food supplementation, but it is limited to chronically food-insecure areas. This study aims to develop local-ingredients based supplement (LIBS) and evaluate if it is comparable to the corn-soya blend plus (CSB+) in treating MAM among children aged 6 to 59 months in Wolaita, Ethiopia. Methods Collection of food ingredients that have the potential for making LIBS was done. Sorting, soaking, roasting, and milling of ingredients were done. The LIBS, with an improved amount of nutrients, was used to test the effectiveness in treating MAM. To evaluate the effectiveness of LIBS compared with CSB+ in treating MAM, we used a randomized controlled non-inferiority trial among 324 moderately wasted children aged 6 to 59 months in Wolaita, Ethiopia. The daily ration was: 100 gm of LIBS plus 25.2 gm of sugar with 8 ml oil in the intervention group and 150 gm of CSB+ with 16 ml of oil in the control group. A chi-square test was used for the comparison of recovery rates between two groups. Kaplan-Meier (log-rank) survival analysis was done to estimate the recovery time and survival curves. Results Four food samples of LIBS were made with different portions of ingredients. One of the LIBS with the highest portion of pumpkin seed and selected for testing had an improved amount of protein, fat, energy, iron, zinc and potassium contents. Its proximate composition indicated protein and fat contents of 22.6 g/100 g and 32.9 g/100 g respectively. The trial results showed that there is no difference in baseline characteristics between the two groups (p > 0.05). The recovery rate for LIBS (n = 105 of 162; 64.8%) was similar to that for CSB+ (n = 108 of 162; 66.7%) (P = 0.6). The duration of recovery was similar for the LIBS group, with a median of 56 days compared to 63 days for the CSB+ group (P = 0.92). Conclusions The LIBS has contained adequate amount of nutrients needed for the treatment of MAM. There was no difference in recovery rates as well as recovery times for those who received LIBS and those who received CSB+ . Thus, LIBS has the same potential to treat MAM as CSB+ . Abstract Background In Ethiopia, 12.5% of children below 5 years are wasted, and 9.7% are moderately wasted. The present strategy for the management of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) is a supplementary feeding program; however, this is only provided to chronically food-insecure areas. This randomized controlled non-inferiority trial examines if Local ingredients-based supplement (LIBS) is as effective as corn-soya blends plus (CSB+) in treating moderate acute malnutrition among children aged 6–59 months. Methods A randomized controlled non-inferiority trial will be conducted with moderately wasted children aged 6 to 59 months in Wolaita, Ethiopia. The calculated sample size is 324 (i.e. with 162 children in each of two arms, to be assigned by randomization). The daily ration will be: 100 g of LIBS plus 25.2 g of sugar with 8 ml oil in the intervention group, and 150 g of CSB+ with 16 ml of oil in the control group. These interventions will be provided for a maximum period of 12 weeks, with follow-up performed on a weekly basis. Data analysis will be done using SPSS and STATA software. Both intention-to-treat and per protocol analyses will be done. Hazard ratio and Kaplan-Meier (log rank) curves of survival analysis will be done to predict the probability of recovery rate. Logistic regression will be used to test for interactions between independent and dependent variables. Analysis of variances, t-tests, fisher’s exact test and chi-square tests will be used to assess baseline characteristics. Conclusions This paper will introduce to the existing research locally available nutritious foods which have the potential to enhance recovery from moderate acute malnutrition and to reduce the burden of malnutrition. The perceptions of mothers on feeding children with local ingredient-based supplementary food to assist recovery from moderate acute malnutrition will be the focus of in a qualitative study to follow; this will provide a further contribution in an evolving area of research. The Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach identifies adolescents as resources to be empowered rather than problems to be solved. All adolescents have strengths and will fully develop when these strengths are integrated with healthy resources in the diverse environments where they live and interact. The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to present the Positive Development Program for Adolescents living in rural areas (DPAR Program) and (2) to pilot test the intervention program. The DPAR program was evaluated using a repeated-measures design before and after the intervention, with an intervention group and a control group. The sample consisted of 176 adolescents between 11 and 15 years old (M = 12.89, SD = 0.90) who belonged to two high schools with similar characteristics located in rural settings. A mixed-design analysis of variance was performed for each dependent variable. Results showed a significant increase in most of the study variables (self-esteem, self-efficacy, group identity, empathy, relational skills, assertiveness, and conflict resolution) and a significant decrease in alexithymia, as well as better academic performance. All this evidence indicates that the DPAR program is effective in promoting positive adolescent development and addresses the lack of programs based on the PYD approach in rural areas.

Inappropriate feeding, too early introduction of complementary foods and restriction in food selection are a major cause of malnutrition among young children in developing countries. Food-to-food fortification is a good strategy to enhance the nutritional quality of children’s diet. This strategy is more and more promoted because it allows delivery of micronutrients to a large population in a cost-effective manner.The present study aimed at testing the effect of the consumption of sorghum porridge fortified with moringa leaf powder and baobab fruit pulp on the nutritional status of children aged 6 to 59 months in Northern Benin. A two-week intervention was implemented in Tanguiéta (Benin) among children affected by moderate acute malnutrition, using 400g of fermented sorghum porridge fortified with15g of a designed mix of moringa leaf powder and baobab fruit pulp. Sixty-three children aged 6–59 months who had malnutrition assessed by anthropometry were randomly selected and assigned to a treatment or a control group. Children in the treatment group consumed the fortified formula daily for two weeks in a nutritional rehabilitation hearth whereas those in the control group had their habitual diet. Their nutritional status was evaluated using anthropometry. Recovery rate and average weight gain of children were computed.Results show that daily consumption of the fortified food for two weeks did not significantly (P> 0.05) increase children’s weight in treatment vs. control. However, average weight gain was 9.85g/kg/day in the treatment group and total recovery rate at risk of malnutrition and moderate acute malnutrition was 62.50% among children who fully complied with the intervention. Fermented sorghum porridge fortified with moringa leaf powder and baobab fruit pulp may be promoted to scale in more regions of Benin as a local affordable and effective therapeutic food against child acute malnutrition. Further investigation of its potential effect while accounting for parasitic infection is needed, to eliminate all risks of intestinal micro nutrient malabsorption or malaria and enhance the effectiveness of the fortified food on children’s weight as well as their iron status.

ABSTRAKAsupan gizi berperan dalam mengendalikan kadar glukosa darah pada pasien diabetes mellitus karena beberapa zat gizi bersumber dari bahan makanan yang dikonsumsi setiap hari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi asupan gizi makro (energi, karbohidrat, lemak, protein dan serat) pada guru prediabetes melalui pemberian labu siam instan dan edukasi gizi. Jenis penelitian ini adalah quasi eksperimen dengan rancangan randomized trial, pre test post test with control group. Guru prediabetes yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi di bagi tiga kelompok secara acak. Asupan gizi makro adalah Jumlah zat gizi yang dikonsumsi dan diukur melalui pengukuran food recall 24 jam menggunakan program nutrisurvey. Analisis data menggunakan uji t dan uji anava. Hasil uji statistik menunjukkan kelompok intervensi labu siam dan kelompok intervensi edukasi gizi serta labu siam secara statistik asupan gizi makro signifikan (p<0,05) artinya terdapatnya perbedaan nyata dari asupan gizi makro sebelum dan sesudah inetervensi. Kelompok intervensi edukasi gizi secara statistik asupan gizi makro tidak signifikan (p>0,05) artinya tidak terdapatnya perbedaan nyata dari asupan gizi makro sebelum dan sesudah inetervensi. Terdapat perbedaan asupan energi, karbohidrat dan serat sesudah intervensi pada ketiga kelompok.Kata-kata kunci: Asupan gizi makro, prediabetes, labu siam, edukasi giziABSTRACTNutritional intake plays a role in controlling blood glucose levels in DM patients because some nutrients that are sourced from food ingredients consumed every day. This study aims to evaluating the intake of macro nutrients (energy, carbohydrates, fats, protein and fiber) in prediabetic teachers through the provision of instant sechium edule and nutritional education. This research type is quasi experiment with randomized trial design, pre test post test with control group. Prediabetic teachers who met the inclusion criteria in the three groups at random. Intake of macro nutrient from food to be measured through 24-hour food recall measurements using nutrisurvey program. Data analysis by using t test and anova test. statistic test result showed The gourd intervention group and nutrition education intervention group and chayote were statistically significant macro nutrient intake (p <0.05) which means there was a marked difference of macro nutrition intake. The nutrition education intervention group of intake of macro nutrition was statistically insignificant (p> 0.05), meaning there was no significant difference in intake of macro nutrition. there was a difference in energy, carbohydrate and fiber intake after intervention in all three groups.Keywords: Intake of macro nutrition, prediabetic, sechium edule, nutrition education

Abstract Background In many low income countries, the majority of acutely malnourished children are either brought to the health facility late or never at all due to reasons related to distance and associated costs. Integrated community case management (iCCM) is an integrated approach addressing disease and malnutrition through use of community health volunteers (CHVs) in children under-5 years. Evidence on the potential impact and practical experiences on integrating community-based management of acute malnutrition as part of an iCCM package is not well documented. In this study, we aim to investigate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of integrating management of acute malnutrition into iCCM. Methods This is a two arm parallel groups, non-inferiority cluster randomized community trial (CRT) employing mixed methods approach (both qualitative and quantitative approaches). Baseline and end line data will be collected from eligible (malnourished) mother/caregiver-child dyads. Ten community units (CUs) with a cluster size of 24 study subjects will be randomized to either an intervention (5 CUs) and a control arm (5 CUs). CHV in the control arm, will only screening and refer MAM/SAM cases to the nearby health facility for treatment by healthcare professionals. In the intervention arm, however; CHVs will be trained both to screen/diagnose and also treat moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and severe acute malnutrition (SAM) without complication. A paired-matching design where each control group will be matched with intervention group with similar characteristics will be matched to ensure balance between the two groups with respect to baseline characteristics. Qualitative data will be collected using key informant and in-depth interviews (KIIs) and focused group discussions (FGDs) to capture the views and experiences of stakeholders. Discussion Our proposed intervention is based on an innovative approach of integrating and simplifying SAM and MAM management through CHWs bring the services closer to the community. The trial has received ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of AMREF Health Africa - Ethical and Scientific Review Committee (AMREF- ESRC), Nairobi, Kenya. The results will be disseminated through workshops, policy briefs, peer-reviewed publications, and presented to local and international conferences. This study examined the feasibility and potential efficacy of a multi-faceted secondary school–based intervention among low-fit adolescent females. TheSport4Funprogram was designed to promote physical activity participation, fundamental movement skill proficiency, perceived physical competence, and enjoyment of physical activity in secondary school students. The intervention consisted of three components including two practical components—weekly movement skill activities for 90 min during compulsory school sport and sports-based activities for 60 min after school (non-compulsory) for 6 months—and one theoretical component—three 15-min theory sessions completed during homeroom (or roll call) time per week. The control group participated in their regular school activities. Compared with females in the control group, those in the intervention group showed a greater increase in total weekday accelerometer counts per min (adjusted difference, 77.49; 95% CI, 8.21–132.77;p = .03; Cohen’s d = 1.26). The difference in total fundamental movement skill components mastered favored the intervention group but was not statistically significant (adjusted difference, 1.48; 95% CI, −1.21–4.17;p = .26, Cohen’s d = 0.48). Targeting fundamental movement skills may be a potentially novel and motivating way to promote activity among low-fit adolescent girls; however, challenges in recruitment and implementation warrant further investigation before adopting this approach more broadly.

The goal of this study is to determine the extent to which faculty training in cooperative learning (CL) transfers to university teaching, according to students’ opinions. The design was quasi-experimental, with a control group and an intervention group. During two years, 346 first-year university Business School students and 12 university teachers of four disciplines (Business and Economy, Communication, Mathematics and Knowledge Integration) took part in the study. The results show that, after specific training in CL methodology, teachers showed significant improvement in the application of several CL dimensions: social skills, evaluation, reflection, interdependence, interaction and tutoring. In addition, a multivariate analysis of variance was calculated to examine the possible interaction effect of teacher training and disciplines on CL application. The results indicate that training based on participants’ needs and context fosters transference to university teaching. Teachers from different disciplines respond differently when applying CL to the classroom after training, especially in evaluation, heterogeneity, and tutoring. The results highlight the importance of a quality faculty professional development program.
