Abstract Using the quantitative methods of Schwartz, Sborov, and Watson, as modified by Balikov, normal ranges for excretion of urobilinogen have been determined for adults. The individual values fall into a logarithmic type of distribution. The normal range for urine urobilinogen excretion is from 0.05 to 2.5 mg./24 hours, with a median of 0.36. The excretion of fecal urobilinogen ranges from 57 to 200 mg./24 hours for males and from 8 to 150 mg. for females. The medians for these groups are 101 and 40 mg., respectively.

A role for the PTH-calcium axis in the normal bone-marrow response to bleeding or erythropoietin administration has been demonstrated in rats. We studied 20 autologous blood donors, each donating two units of blood, who served as a human bleeding model. Fifteen patients completed the study. Blood donations were followed by a significant increase in serum intact PTH (2.15±0.67 to 2.81±0.84 pmol/l; p=0.0003) and protein-corrected total calcium (2.43±0.09 to 2.49±0.08 mmol/l; p=0.02). All the individual values remained within the normal range. PTH weakly correlated with the reticulocyte count, but not with the corrected serum calcium. We conclude that moderate bleeding in humans is followed by a physiological increase in serum PTH and calcium.


Complacency potential is an important measure to avoid performance error, such as neglecting to detect a system failure. This study updates and expands upon Singh, Molloy, and Parasuraman’s 1993 Complacency-Potential Rating Scale (CPRS). We updated and expanded the CPRS questions to include technology commonly used today and how frequently the technology is used. The goal of our study was to update the scale, analyze for factor shifts and internal consistency, and to explore correlations between the individual values for each factor and the frequency of use questions. We hypothesized that the factors would not shift from the original and the revised CPRS’s four subscales. Our research found that the revised CPRS consisted of only three subscales with the following Cronbach’s Alpha values: Confidence: 0.599, Safety/Reliability: 0.534, and Trust: 0.201. Correlations between the subscales and the revised complacency-potential and the frequency of use questions are also discussed.


During the latter part of 1902 and the early months of 1903 I resolved to take as many observations of the rates of dissipation of positive and negative electric charges as possible, and to continue them over the whole 24 hours of the day, and, when opportunity offered, over longer periods. There appeared to be little information regarding the rate of dispersion during the night hours. At about the same time that these observations were being made, Nilsson was doing similar work at Upsala, and found a noticeable maximum value for atmospheric conductivity at about midnight. The observations were made on the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand, at a station about 20 feet above sea-level and about five miles due west from the sea coast. The apparatus used was Elster and Geitel’s Zerstreuungs- apparat , and the formula of reduction used was that given by them, viz:- E = 1/ t log V 0 /V- n / t ' log V' 0 /V' . In this formula E is proportional to the conductivity of the gas surrounding the instrument—for positive or negative charges, as the case may be. The constant “ n ” = ratio of capacity without cylinder ____________________________________ capacity with cylinder was determined by me to be 0·47, as the instrument was always used, with the protecting cover. The cover was always at one height above the base of the instrument, and was set so as to be as nearly co-axial with the discharging cylinder as could be judged by eye. No attempt was made to determine the actual capacity of the condenser cylinder and protecting cover, which would be a somewhat variable quantity owing- (1) to the differences on different days in attempting to cause the two to be co-axial; (2) to a certain amount of looseness in the fit of the shank of the cylinder on to its hole. The value above given for “ n "is the mean of several deter­minations made with different settings of the cover and cylinder. The individual values of “ n ” varied over about 0.03.

Objective. Lumbar punctures in children are generally performed in a flexed position. Published normal ranges for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) opening pressure require measurement in an extended position, and flexion is known to increase lumbar CSF pressure. This study sought to determine a normal range (mean ± 2 SD) for lumbar CSF opening pressure measured in a flexed lateral decubitus position in children. Methods. Opening pressure was measured in 33 children receiving diagnostic lumbar punctures or prophylactic intrathecal chemotherapy. Measurements were performed in a flexed lateral decubitus position. Patients with medical conditions affecting CSF pressure were excluded. Results. Opening pressure (mean ± SD) was 19.0 ± 4.4 cm H2O. Opening pressure was not significantly affected by patient age or sex. Intrathecal chemotherapy and sedation also did not affect CSF pressure. Conclusions. The normal range for lumbar CSF opening pressure measured in a flexed lateral decubitus position in children is 10 to 28 cm H2O.

The activity of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) in the serum was determined by the spectrophotometric method in 63 normal term newborn infants, varying from birth to 11 days of age. The normal range of activity in the newborn period varied from 13 to 105 units (with the exception of one infant in whom the level was 160 units). This is a considerably wider range than that of 5 to 45 units found in normal adults. Allowing for an error of about ±10% inherent in the method of determination of GOT, activity as great as approximately 120 units, which in adults would be indicative of some pathologic state, must be considered physiologic in the newborn infant. The activity of GOT was not related to the age of the infant within the neonatal period studied, and varied widely in different infants for each day of age, without any distinctive pattern. Variations of the activity of GOT in specimens of cord blood studied ranged below 59 units, which was lower than for any other day of the neonatal period adequately investigated. No infants were studied repeatedly. No relation was found between the concentration of bilirubin and the activity of GOT in the serum.

We evaluated the effect of pulmonary edema on the frequency (f) and tidal volume (VT) dependences of respiratory system mechanical properties in the normal ranges of breathing. We measured resistance and elastance of the lungs (RL and EL) and chest wall of four anesthetized-paralyzed dogs during sinusoidal volume oscillations at the trachea (50–300 ml, 0.2–2 Hz), delivered at a constant mean airway pressure. Measurements were made before and after severe pulmonary edema was produced by injection of 0.06 ml/kg oleic acid into the right atrium. Chest wall properties were not changed by the injection. Before oleic acid, EL increased slightly with increasing f in each dog but was independent of VT. RL decreased slightly and was independent of VT from 0.2 to 0.4 Hz, but above 0.4 Hz it tended to increase with increasing flow, presumably due to the airway contribution. After oleic acid injection, EL and RL increased greatly. Large negative dependences of EL on VT and of RL on f were also evident, so that EL and RL after oleic acid changed two- and fivefold, respectively, within the ranges of f and VT studied. We conclude that severe pulmonary edema changes lung properties so as to make behavior VT dependent (i.e., nonlinear) and very frequency dependent in the normal range of breathing.

Introduction. A bleeding syndrome in the setting of primary hyperfibrinolysis in a prostate cancer patient is only 0.40? 1.65% of cases. The laboratory diagnosis of primary hyperfibrinolysis is based on the increase of biomarkers like D-dimer, fibrinogen split products, plasminogen, and euglobulin lysis test. These tests are not specific for primary hyperfibrinolysis. We reported a rare case of hemorrhagic syndrome caused by primary hyperfibrinolysis as the first clinical symptom of metastatic prostate cancer. Case report. A 64-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with large hematomas in the right pectoral and axillary areas (20 x 7 cm), right hemiabdomen (30 x 30 cm) and the left lumbal area, (25 x 5 cm). The patient had no subjective symptoms nor used any medication. Initial coagulation testing, prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were within the normal range, while fibrinogen level was extremely low (1.068 g/L) (normal range 2.0?5.0) and the D-dimer assay result was high 1.122 mg/L (normal range < 0.23). The results obtained by rotation thrombelastometry pointed to primary fibrinolysis. Further clinical and laboratory examination indicated progressive malignant prostate disease. First line treatment for the patient was a combined administration of tranexamic acid (3 x 500 mg iv) and transfusion of ten units of cryoprecipitate (400 mL). Next day, fibrinolytic function measurements by rotation thrombelastometry were within the normal ranges. Fibrinogen level was normalized within two days (2.4 g/L). There were no newly developed hematomas. Conclusion. This case report shows primary hyperfibrinolysis with bleeding symptoms, which is an uncommon paraneoplastic phenomenon within expanded prostate malignancy. Rotation thrombelastometry in this severe complication helped to achieve the prompt and proper diagnosis and treatment.

Nations have been questioned as meaningful units for analyzing culture due to their allegedly limited variance-capturing power and large internal heterogeneity. Against this skepticism, we argue that culture is by definition a collective phenomenon and focusing on individual differences contradicts the very concept of culture. Through the “miracle of aggregation,” we can eliminate random noise and arbitrary variation at the individual level in order to distill the central cultural tendencies of nations. Accordingly, we depict national culture as a gravitational field that socializes individuals into the orbit of a nation’s central cultural tendency. Even though individuals are also exposed to other gravitational forces, subcultures in turn gravitate within the limited orbit of their national culture. Using data from the World Values Survey, we show that individual values cluster in concentric circles around their nation’s cultural gravity center. We reveal the miracle of aggregation by demonstrating that nations capture the bulk of the variation in the individuals’ cultural values once they are aggregated into lower-level territorial units such as towns and sub-national regions. We visualize the gravitational force of national cultures by plotting various intra-national groups from five large countries that form distinct national clusters. Contrary to many scholars’ intuitions, alternative social aggregates, such as ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups, as well as diverse socio-demographic categories, add negligible explained variance to that already captured by nations.

Приводятся результаты эмпирического исследования (N=1600), посвященного отношению россиян к новым технологиям. Показано, что позитивное отношение личности к новым технологиям поддерживается ценностями открытости к изменениям и отрицательно связано с ценностями сохранения. Удалось прояснить соотношение когнитивных, аффективных и поведенческих компонентов отношения личности к новым технологиям. Были выделены социально-психологические типы оценивания новых технологий («индифферентные», «ориентированные на влияние значимых других», «разборчивые», «прагматики», «ориентированные на безопасность»), а также социально-психологические типы отношения личности к новым технологиям («технофилы», «тревожные сторонники технического прогресса», «технофобы» и «безразличные к технологиям»). Выявлены социально-психологические предикторы технооптимизма, технофобии, технофилии и готовности использовать новые технологии. На основании проведенных исследований можно сделать вывод о том, что технофилия и технофобия являются не противоположными полюсами одной шкалы, а разными феноменами, связанными друг с другом. The results of an empirical study (N = 1600) devoted to the attitudes of Russians towards new technologies are presented. It is shown that the positive attitudes of the individual to new technologies is supported by the values of openness to change and is negatively associated with the values of conservation. We managed to clarify the relationship between the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of personal attitudes to new technologies. We have identified several socio-psychological types of assessment of new technologies ("indifferent", "relying on social support", "discerning", "pragmatists", "safety-oriented"), as well as socio-psychological types of personality attitudes to new technologies ("technophiles", "anxious supporters of technical progress", "technophobes", and "indifferent to technology"). The socio-psychological predictors of techno-optimism, technophobia, technophilia and willingness to use new technologies were identified. Based on the research carried out, it can be concluded that technophilia and technophobia are not opposite poles of the same scale, but different phenomena related to each other.

Abstract Objective Scope: ADNOC group of companies introduced the Fursa platform which is an internal online website where HR acquisition partners among the 13 companies can post vacancies and employees from any of the 13 companies can apply to those vacancies. The aim of this initiative is to move ADNOC's employees internally to reskill, fill department gaps, and cross-collaborate to get a project done or hit an organizational goal with minimizing hiring cost and accelerate recruitment process. This study considers the above stated program as an explanatory factor to determine the individual's as well as organizational outcomes in ADNOC group of companies. Methods, Procedure, Process: To address the study objectives, qualitative and quantitative methods are adopted. More specifically, for quantitative approach, structural questionnaire was developed through adopting different items from the literature. Whereas qualitative analysis are conducted while using the information from structured interviews. Results, Observations, Conclusions: The study findings indicates that both individual and organizational outcomes are positively and significantly determined by internal mobility program. Similarly, analyses through qualitative approach confirms that internal mobility program helps to provide learning and development of the employees, productivity and performance in terms of individual outcomes, and sales and growth to reflect the concept of organizational outcomes. It is stated current program Enabled employees to find their next position, project, or mentor internally, and maximized ADNOC workforce potential and unlock the capacity to meet the corporate objectives. Other interesting outcomes are It takes less time and money to source (and saves money on relocation costs and as known during pandemic situation there is a restriction on international movement between countries); it enables faster onboarding and ramping up. Additionally, during internal mobility the company is confident that the candidate shares your mission and vision, and It also implies that you are aware of a candidate's most recent performance. Novel/Additive information: the study is unique in the sense that it is done in one of the giant oil and gas companies which employees working in different aspects of the business; upstream, downstream, and mid-stream. The study introduces modern ways of work in a speedy, natural manner, and the use of MS Teams to do virtual interviews. Fursa platform allows companies to act quickly. It only takes a few seconds to determine where talent should be directed, and a few more seconds to deploy it.
