Abstract We describe the testing of transferability of candidate Reference Methods developed by INSTAND for cholesterol, creatinine, uric acid, and glucose. The methods are based on isotope dilution-gas chromatography--mass spectrometry. The study consisted of two parts: setup of the methods and self-evaluation for readiness in the collaborating laboratory, followed by independent measurements in parallel with INSTAND. Criteria used for judging the transferability and general reliability of the candidate Reference Methods were: the accuracy and precision of the collaborating laboratory and the agreement between the two laboratories. The accuracy was judged from the results on the Standard Reference Material 909 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. For all analytes except glucose the bias from the certified value was < 0.7%. The mean intralaboratory imprecision ranged from 0.66% to 1.24%. The agreement between the results was tested by an advanced linear-regression analysis and Student's t-test. In general, the results demonstrate that the candidate Reference Methods developed by INSTAND can be successfully transferred without loss of their inherent precision and accuracy.

Abstract In Germany, the target values for External Quality Assessment (EQA) and internal accuracy control are determined by Reference Methods for several analytes, including cholesterol, creatinine, uric acid, and glucose. We present candidate Reference Methods for these compounds, based on isotope dilution-gas chromatography--mass spectrometry methods that have been developed at INSTAND, one of the two official Germany EQA reference institutions. Each Reference Method target value is calculated from six independent measurements performed on three different days. The mean method CVs ranged from 0.66% for glucose to 0.96% for creatinine. The inaccuracy (bias) of the methods is < 0.7%, as compared with the Standard Reference Material 909 of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The maximum total error of a Reference Method value, including the 95% confidence interval and systematic errors, is < 2.3%. The presented candidate Reference Methods have been successfully used to set target values in the German EQA scheme and the internal accuracy control of routine laboratories.

Objective: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disease condition characterized by truncal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, elevated blood pressure, and insulin resistance. An excessive circulating uric acid (UA) level even within normal range is always comorbid with metabolic syndrome and its components. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and serum UA level.Methods: A total of 60 subjects were divided into two groups of healthy (30 individuals) and metabolic syndrome patients (30 individuals) from dental outpatient department of Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals. 5 ml of fasting venous blood was collected in the plain collection tubes and centrifuged, and then serum was separated. Then, the serum was used to analyze the fasting blood glucose, serum triglycerides (TGLs), and serum UA by GOD-POD, enzymatic colorimetric, and uricase method, respectively. A statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test. p<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.Result: Mean body mass index (BMI), fasting blood sugar (FBS), TGL, and UA level of control group were 23.36±1.81, 84.45±13.1, 110.9±22.6, and 3.48±1.21 respectively. Mean BMI, FBS, TGL, and UA level of study group were 35.24±3.04, 122.85±23.3, 212.1±39.6 and 9.08±2.63 respectively. There is a significant difference between these two groups with p<0.0001.Conclusion: This study showed that those individuals with metabolic syndrome have higher UA level that indicates hyperuricemia which is a significant predictor of metabolic syndrome.

Emotional intelligence includes self-perception regarding attention to feelings, clarity of feelings and mood repair. The aim of this work is to study the relationship between emotional intelligence, self-concept, and self-esteem. The sample included 137 adolescents from Buenos Aires City, that attended middle school, with a mean age of 13.12 years old (SD = 1.79). Correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were performed. Results showed significant positive correlations between self-esteem and clarity of feelings on the complete sample and the female subsample, and between mood repair and self-esteem on the male subsample. The linear regression analyses showed results on the same line. It´s concluded that positive self-evaluation regarding emotions, emotion comprehension and recovery can minimize the effect of negative experiences.

Abstract Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of asymptomatic hyperuricemia in Qatar and to examine its association with changes in markers of dyslipidemia, prediabetes and subclinical inflammation. Methods A cross-sectional study of young adult participants aged 18 - 40 years old devoid of comorbidities collected between 2012 and 2017. Exposure was defined as uric acid level, and outcomes were defined as levels of different blood markers. De-identified data were collected from Qatar Biobank. T-tests, correlation tests and multiple linear regression were all used to investigate the effects of hyperuricemia on blood markers. Statistical analyses were conducted using STATA 16. Results The prevalence of asymptomatic hyperuricemia is 21.2% among young adults in Qatar. Differences between hyperuricemic and normouricemic groups were observed using multiple linear regression analysis and found to be statistically and clinically significant after adjusting for age, gender, BMI, smoking and exercise. Significant associations were found between uric acid level and HDL-c p = 0.019 (correlation coefficient -0.07 (95% CI [-0.14, -0.01]); c-peptide p = 0.018 (correlation coefficient 0.38 (95% CI [0.06, 0.69]) and monocyte to HDL ratio (MHR) p = 0.026 (correlation coefficient 0.47 (95% CI [0.06, 0.89]). Conclusions Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is prevalent among young adults and associated with markers of prediabetes, dyslipidemia, and subclinical inflammation.

Abstract. Here we conducted comprehensive chemical characterization and source apportionment of 49 PM2.5 samples collected in Hong Kong. Besides the major aerosol constituents, 39 polar organic species, including 14 secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers of isoprene, monoterpenes, β-caryophyllene, and naphthalene, were quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Six factors, i.e., SOA, secondary sulfate (SS), biomass burning (BB)/SOA, sea salt, marine vessels, and vehicle emissions, were apportioned by positive matrix factorization (PMF) as the major sources of ambient organic carbon (OC) in Hong Kong. The secondary formation, including OC from SOA, SS, and aging of BB plume, was the leading contributor to OC (51.4 %, 2.15 ± 1.37 µg C m−3) throughout the year. We then applied a tracer-based method (TBM) to estimate the SOA formation from the photo-oxidation of four selected precursors, and monoterpene SOA was the most abundant. A Kintecus kinetic model was used to examine the formation channels of isoprene SOA, and the aerosol-phase ring-opening reaction of isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOXs) was found to be the dominant formation pathway. Consistently, IEPOX tracers contributed 94 % to total GC–MS-quantified isoprene SOA tracers. The TBM-estimated secondary organic carbon (SOCTBM) and PMF-apportioned SOC (SOCPMF) showed similar temporal trends; however, SOCTBM only accounted for 26.5 % of SOCPMF, indicating a large fraction of ambient SOA was from other reaction pathways or precursors. Results of Pearson's R and multivariate linear regression analysis showed that NOx processing played a key role in both daytime and nighttime SOA production in the region. Moreover, sulfate had a significant positive linear relationship with SOCPMF and SS-related SOC, and particle acidity was significantly correlated with SOC from the aging of BB.

Abstract Introduction New burn intensive care unit (BICU) nurses in the Burn Center complete an evidence-based preceptorship to include standardized wound care education that is reinforced throughout preceptorship. A gap in skill sustainment was identified; factors include lack of a formal sustainment program, inconsistent reinforcement of wound care skills and a perceived decrease in pride in wound care. The purposes of this project are to 1) develop and implement a wound care skill sustainment program 2) re-establish confidence in wound care and 3) improve the quality of wound care delivered in the BICU. Methods A Wound Improvement Project (WIP) committee was formed FEB 2018 consisting 8 BICU nurses; the BICU Nurse Manager and Wound Clinical Nurse Specialist serve as consultants. WIP developed several learning modules and is now developing a wound skill sustainment program and evaluation tool based on the Burn Nurse Competency Initiative (BNCI) standards. BICU staff complete an anonymous survey about wound care confidence every 6 months. WIP mentors and evaluates competency through direct observation during 3 assigned shifts with each BICU nurse. Wound care documentation is audited monthly and a wound care quality audit tool is being developed. Descriptive statistics, student’s T-test, and ANOVA were used. Results The confidence survey was given in Spring 2018 (n=52), Winter 2019 (n=33) and Summer 2019 (n=64); each question showed significant improvement. Notably “how confident would you be doing a full body wound care by yourself with some help turning” improved from 4.12 (±1.17) to 4.64 (±0.65, p=.01). 24 BICU staff have been evaluated with 40 pending completion. No significant difference was found in skill competency between the 3 WIP assigned shifts; however self-evaluation for “how comfortable/confident do you feel advocating for a different type of wound care treatment for your patient” improved from 6.1 (±2.2) to 7.5 (±1.9, p&lt; .0001). Average wound documentation scores improved from 85% in FEB 2018 to 99% in FEB 2019. Conclusions Wound care confidence and documentation have improved since initiation of WIP. Targeted education, bedside tools and workshops have all contributed. There is a positive trend (not significant) towards improved skill competency this is likely due to tool modifications and the small number of staff evaluated to date. Staff feedback has been positive with most staff finding WIP helpful. The long-term goal is to expand WIP to all areas of the Burn Center. Applicability of Research to Practice BNCI standards are a framework for skill sustainment and progression of staff from competent towards proficient and expert. Development and evaluation of nurse-led sustainment programs are needed across the burn community.

This study aimed to establish the relationship between empathy and personality styles in medical students, considering the differences by gender. The participants were 278 students of the medical career of the Universidad del Azuay, Ecuador. They were evaluated using the Jefferson empathy scale and the Millon Index of Personality Styles. Relationships between empathy and personality styles were examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, for comparisons by gender and educational levels; with both Student's t test and analysis of variance used respectively. Results indicated that the factor structure of the empathy scale is invariant between men and women, noticing gender differences in care with compassion and total empathy, with women presenting a higher mean. Differences are observed by educational level, where the general empathy in the first three years grows progressively, and then slightly decrease. In conclusion,  female students present a mean score of total empathy greater than men, with differences of empathy according to educational level

Abstract A highly specific method is described for measuring estradiol-17 beta (E2) in plasma by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) associated with stable isotope dilution. A mixed derivative, E2-3-trimethylsilyl ether-17-heptafluorobutyrate (E2-3-TMS-17-HFB), was found to have excellent analytical properties. The specificity of the derivatization procedure exploits a unique feature of estrogens: the selective exchange of a phenolic perfluoroacyl ester for a trialkylsilyl ether. No significant differences in E2 concentration could be ascribed to the use of 2H- or 13C-labeled analogs, thus ruling out interferences from possible isotope exchange commonly attributed to deuterated compounds. Precision is closely similar to that for methods in which the more common E2-3, 17-bis(trimethylsilyl) ether and E2-3, 17-bis(heptafluorobutyrate) derivatives are used. Sensitivity and specificity of the mixed 3-TMS-17-HFB derivative allow adequate determinations of E2, even in plasma from males, in 2-mL samples. Interlaboratory mean concentrations of E2 obtained by routine immunoassays were consistently higher than the target values estimated by GC-MS, particularly at concentrations less than 100 pmol/L.
