Abstract Background Diabetes increases the risk of periodontal disease, which in turn negatively impact on diabetes control and complications. Therefore, awareness about the diabetes-oral health link and dental problems is important for people with diabetes. This study aimed to assess self-reported oral health status and knowledge of people living with diabetes. Methods A survey was conducted among patients who attended four public diabetes clinics in Sydney, Australia. The questionnaire included 10 knowledge items and a validated Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) scale. A convenience sample of 200 patients were recruited. The data were analysed using SPSS software with descriptive and Pearson's Chi-Squared tests reported. Results The mean age of participants was 62.4(±13.5) years. More than half were males (54.5%), born overseas (64%), not working (73%) and had type 2 diabetes (88%). More than half (55.1%) of the patients reported having one or more dental problems and this was negatively associated with their oral health-related quality of life (p < 0.001). The most common dental problems were: gaps between teeth, pain in teeth and dry mouth. Only 46.2% of the participants had adequate oral health knowledge (> the mean correct score 5.2 (±2.6). The main areas with poor knowledge were around the impact of gum disease on blood glucose levels (29.6%), effects of dry mouth on tooth decay (33.8%) and the link between diabetes and teeth and gums (44.5%). Only 13% of the patients reported receiving oral health information from diabetes care providers (diabetes educator, general practitioner/diabetes specialist and dietitian/nutritionist). Receiving oral health information was found to be significantly associated with higher oral health knowledge scores (p < 0.05). Conclusions Considering that a majority of patients with diabetes have dental problems and inadequate oral health knowledge, diabetes care providers should take the opportunity to educate patients about oral health risks. Key messages People living with diabetes found to have dental problems and inadequate oral health knowledge. Considering that diabetes and dental problems adversely affect each other, it is crucial to educate patients about good oral hygiene and regular dental visit.

This study assessed self-reported oral health status, knowledge, and behaviours of people living with diabetes along with barriers and facilitators in accessing dental care. A cross sectional survey of 260 patients from four public diabetes clinics in Sydney, Australia was undertaken using a 35-item questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS software with descriptive and logistic regression analyses. More than half (53.1%) of respondents reported having dental problems which negatively impacted their related quality of life. Less than half (45%) had adequate oral health knowledge. Only 10.8% reported receiving any oral health information in diabetes care settings, which had higher odds of demonstrating adequate oral health knowledge (AOR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.06–6.34). Similarly, 62.7% reported seeing a dentist in the last 12 months. Having private health insurance (AOR, 3.70; 95% CI, 1.85–7.40) had higher odds of seeing a dentist in the past 12 months. Dental costs were a major contributor to avoiding or delaying dental visit. Patients living with diabetes have unmet oral health needs particularly around the awareness of its importance and access to affordable dental services. Diabetes care providers can play a crucial role in this area by promoting oral health to their patients.

Introduction: Attending regular dental check-up is very important to pregnant women. However, many women do not utilize oral healthcare services during the antenatal period. It had been reported in Health Information Management System report (MOH, 2007) that the attendance of antenatal mothers to dental clinic were unsatisfactory. Therefore, the aim of this research was to explore the perception of antenatal mothers towards oral health care. Materials and Methods: In-depth interviews were carried out with a convenience sampling of 20 antenatal mothers across three government health clinics in Selangor, Malaysia. The interview using guided questions which explored participant’s oral health knowledge, attitude and oral health practice. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed by thematic analysis. The interviews were carried out until the saturation of information were achieved. Results: The main themes emerging from the data related to low oral health knowledge, poor attitude and oral health practices during pregnancy. Although all participants have basic knowledge of dental caries development, however, many of them unaware of the significance of preventive dental visits during pregnancy. Poor attitudes and oral health practices among antenatal mothers in this study were due to they had not received the necessary oral health information. Conclusion: Antenatal mother’s perception of oral health care crucially impacts on oral health status, continuity of utilization of oral healthcare services and hence pregnancy outcome. Their views provided a baseline information for planning and formulating appropriate oral health education and promotion strategies.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To assess and compare differences in oral health knowledge, attitudes and behavior among first and final year dental students in Udaipur city, Rajasthan, India. MATERIAL AND METHODS In a cross-sectional study, 182 first year students (59 males and 123 females) and 157 final year students (75 males and 82 females) of the two dental colleges in Udaipur city; Rajasthan, were surveyed using a self administered structured questionnaire including 37 multiple choice questions pre-tested through a pilot survey. The data was analyzed using the SPSS version 10.0 . The mean percentage scores, standard deviation, and frequency distribution were calculated. The Student's T-test and ANOVA test were used as test of significance. The linear regression analysis were used to assess the relation of knowledge, attitude and behavior. RESULTS The mean % score for oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior were significantly higher in final year students compared to first year students. (p<0.001). The linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant linear relationship of attitude with the knowledge (p<0.001) and behavior with the attitude (p<0.001) of the students. CONCLUSION Besides the positive changes revealed in the oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior, among the students from first to final year of dental studies, preventive behavior among the students could still be improved.

Abstract Background This study aimed to design a gamified smartphone application (app) and assess its efficacy for education of mothers regarding oral healthcare of their children. Methods In this pretest–posttest controlled clinical trial, a simple app and a gamified version of it were designed to enhance the oral health knowledge and practice of mothers. The app contains information about early childhood caries, health diet, sugars, baby-oral hygiene, fluoride effect, fluoride toothpaste, tooth-brushing training video and regular dental visits. The opinion of experts and 3 mothers were obtained and both apps were revised accordingly. The intervention was implemented on mothers of preschoolers referring to the specialty dental clinic of Tehran School of Dentistry in 2019. The mothers were randomly allocated to the simple app or gamified app group. Before the intervention, all mothers filled out a questionnaire regarding oral health knowledge and practice, and their demographics were collected. The plaque index (PI) of children was also measured. The mothers filled out the same questionnaire 1 month after the intervention, and the PI of children was measured again. Paired t test and linear regression model were used for statistical analysis of the data. Results Totally, 58 mother and child pairs entered the study; 40% of children were boys. The mean age of children was 4.7 ± 1.2 years. The mean knowledge score of mothers in the pretest was 10.5 and 11.3 in simple app and gamified app group, respectively, which changed to 13.1 and 14.3, respectively in the posttest. The mean practice score of mothers was 4.4 and 4.8 in simple app and gamified app groups, respectively in the pretest, which changed to 8.5 and 8, respectively in the posttest. The mean dental plaque index of children in the pretest was 0.8 and 1 in simple app and gamified app groups, respectively, which changed to 0.5 and 0.5, respectively in the posttest. Children had better Plaque control in gamified app group (P < 0.05). Conclusion After 1 month, both apps effectively improved the oral-health knowledge and practice of mothers while oral hygiene as a result of plaque control was superior in children of mothers using the gamified app. Trial registration IRCT, IRCT20131102015238N2. Background: Oral health education, as a part of oral health promotion, has been considered as essential and basic part of dental health services.School provides a perfect setting for health education programmes aiming to control the growing burden of oral diseases and to promote oral health. Aim: To determine the impact of oral health education on oral health knowledge and practice among 15 year old school going children of government high schools in Lucknow city. Design: The schools were selected by simple random sampling method following the lottery method of selection. These classes have children of 15 years of age. Each class has two to three sections, and these sections were chosen for the purpose of data collection. Children were selected by simple random sampling technique. Results: The oral health knowledge and awareness of all children improved significantly after the education. Statistically significant increase in the proportion of correct responses was noted following the programme especially in relation to Q2, Q6, Q7, Q9 and Q10. Conclusion: The information, which children receive and the awareness that is created during the programme in school, contributes to the first tentative steps to forming their attitudes and beliefs, which may later lead to healthier choices.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) among 3-year-old children in Wenzhou China. Methods Kindergarten children aged 3 were recruited using a stratified cluster sampling method. Dental examinations were conducted by one trained dentist, and oral health-related data were collected. Examinations were surface-specific for dental caries, following World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Bivariate tests and logistic regression models were used to assess the association between ECC and different risk factors. Results A total of 693 children were recruited for the study, and 445 completed the dental examination. Among the 445 children, the prevalence of ECC was 59.8%. The mean decayed, missing, and filled primary teeth (dmft) was 2.9, and of the total dmft, only 6.3% were filled. The mean decayed, missing, and filled primary surface (dmfs) was 4.9. Logistic regression analyses identified age and parents’ oral health knowledge level were associated with the experience of ECC (P<0.05). Conclusions A higher prevalence of ECC was observed and most of the carious teeth were untreated. The experience of ECC was related to age and parents’ oral health knowledge level.

Background Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics are a new model of primary healthcare in Ontario. Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics are distinctive in that nurse practitioners are the primary care providers working with an interprofessional team. There have been no evaluations of the quality of care within the Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic model. Purpose Evaluation of the Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic model, specifically for complex clinical presentations, will provide insights that may be used to inform improvements to the delivery of care in the Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent to which diabetes care was complete and to determine the impact of organizational tools, including electronic medical record tracking, diabetes care template, and referral to community programs, on the completeness of care for patients with diabetes and multimorbidity at Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics. Methods An audit of 30 charts was conducted at five different Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics (n = 150) for patients with diabetes and at least one other chronic condition. Indicators included patient and organizational characteristics as well as diabetes care items taken from diabetes clinical guidelines. Results Overall, care for patients with diabetes and multimorbidity in Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics was complete. However, there were no significant associations between patient or organizational characteristics and the extent to which diabetes care was complete.

Educational interventions on oral health care is traditionally carried out mainly by oral health workers in Nigeria. Despite the introduction of the National Oral Health Policy, oral health services/education is virtually non-existent in PHC centres in Nigeria. This study sought to determine the effect of a health education intervention delivered by Community Health Officers (CHO) on the oral health knowledge and practices of mothers attending a PHC centre in Lagos State. A pre-experimental, Before- After study design was employed. An interviewer- administered questionnaire was administered at baseline to assess the oral health care knowledge and practices of 267 mothers who enrolled in the programme. After enrolling the participants, CHO’s previously trained commenced a health education intervention on oral health. The intervention, which consisted of 2 lecture sessions, a demonstration session and a return demonstration session, utilising flipcharts and health information leaflets spanned a six-month period. Oral health knowledge and practices of participating mothers was evaluated 3 and 6 months after the intervention commenced using a standardised checklist. Data entry and analysis was done using SPSS version 20, P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. The mean oral health knowledge score at baseline was 4.58 (±1.37) while at 3-month and 6-month postintervention the mean scores were 4.68 (±0.97) and 4.96 (±0.49), respectively. There was a statistically significant increase (P=0.000) in the mean knowledge scores at 6 months post-intervention. Mothers who were 36 years or older and those with more than 12 years education displayed significantly better knowledge scores (P<0.05). Most (78.3%) reported using cotton wool or foam with water for their infants’ oral hygiene. By the second post-intervention visit, there was a significant change in the perception of the mothers on correct oral hygiene tool for infants (52.3%; P=0.000). Furthermore the percentage of mothers actually using toothbrush to clean their child’s mouth (98.1%; P=0.000) had increased. The oral health knowledge of the participants increased significantly following the intervention especially at the 6-month evaluation. PHC workers can successfully carry out oral health educational interventions at PHC level. The greatest value will occur with reinforced repetition of the messages.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine’s Smiles for Life: A National Oral Health Curriculum on the knowledge and attitudes of physician assistant students regarding oral health. Methods: Seventy-two didactic year physician assistant students from one physician assistant program were surveyed to assess their knowledge and attitudes regarding oral health prior to starting the Smiles for Life oral health curriculum. The students were electronically surveyed a second time 1 week after completing all online modules in the Smiles for Life oral health curriculum. Results: Precourse and postcourse survey response rates were 57% and 36%, respectively. The mean of the attitude statements increased from 3.20 on the precourse survey to 3.87 on the postcourse survey (P=.0012). The mean number of correct responses on the knowledge questions increased from 6.83 on the precourse survey to 9.85 on the postcourse survey (P&lt;.0001). Conclusions: Statistically significant improvements in the attitudes toward oral health and oral health knowledge of physician assistant students after completion of the Smiles for Life curriculum were observed. This study illustrates the effectiveness of the Smiles for Life curriculum as an interprofessional educational experience. This curriculum can be completed online and does not require faculty expertise in oral health, thus removing previously cited barriers to incorporating oral health into the physician assistant curriculum.
