Yersiniosis is caused by the enteropathogenic Gram-negative organisms Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, which are worldwide zoonotic pathogens. Disease is acquired by consumption of contaminated food or water and is commonest in childhood, and in colder climates.
