Seafood Certification and Non-governmental Organizations. In the last 20 years, many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become involved in providing advice on what seafood to eat, or in certifying different seafood products as well-managed or sustainable. The same NGOs have also become quite involved in the politics of fisheries management. The Marine Stewardship Council provides the most widely recognized certification of seafood sustainability and is increasingly demanded by major retailers in some countries. NGOs involved in marine conservation have become a roughly $500-million-per-year business, funded by foundations and private donors, and with a business model that compels them to raise concerns about fisheries sustainability to maintain cash flow.

Certification according to the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is highly demanded in the world market of seafood products. In Russia, a number of fisheries already have MSC certificates, but still there is a significant potential for certification of other fisheries. This requires analysis of the experience of companies that have successfully obtained the certification. Special attention should be paid to small-scale fisheries, whose financial opportunities to participate in certification programs, unlike large fisheries, are seriously limited. In the present work, process of ecological certification of fishery is considered on an example of the gillnet fishery of European perch Perca fluviatilis in the Irikla Reservoir, located in the middle course of the river Ural in the Orenburg Province. The catch volume of perch is 200–250 metric tons during the recent years. Fishing companies that fish in this reservoir have been working on MSC certification for over ten years. Process of certification has shown that the fishery meets the necessary standards, but even after the certification completed in 2016, there is a need for certain activities to support certification. These are in-depth analysis of the recreational fisheries, development of research plans in cooperation with scientific fishery institutes, specifically aimed at informing the certification process, independent analysis of the fisheries management system, detailed study of various bycatch species. It can be concluded that positive experience of this small-scale fishery with ecological certification can be important in improving fisheries management not only in Russia but also worldwide.

Media Lab Asia (MLA) has been incepted in 2001 with the collaboration of MIT Media Lab and Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DEITY), Government of India. It is working on the paradigm of collaborative research from the lab to land in developing and operationalizing technologies to bridge the gap through educating, equipping and empowering common man. MLA is working in four sectors: livelihood, healthcare, empowerment of the disabled and education. MLA is successful in collaborating with Research & Development (R&D) organizations, institutions in Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academia and industry. A long list of collaborators of MLA includes 59 partner agencies. MLA role, however, had confined to provide funding to the partner agencies. The collaborative organization develops product, tests and launches the projects. The reach of the project touches major states in India. eGalla, Chic, mDhanwanthari, and Sehat-Saathi are some of the projects developed by MLA and collaborators. eGalla is a retail management software, and Chic is developed to simplify the traditional craft for livelihood generation. mDhanwanthari and Sehat-Saathi are based on healthcare to rural communities. MLA has developed 75 projects since its inception. The projects have reached the beneficiary but lack in scale and commercialization. The parameter of success for MLA includes the potential for commercialization of the products or projects and self-sustaining mechanism of the impact of these products and projects. There are not many obligations for commercial success being a Section 25 company; however, a self-sustaining mechanism was critical. DEITY, the parent organization, has sought external support to develop a new business model to overcome the limitation.

Much has been written about the poor relations between fisheries scientists and lay people, but the experience of two field biologists suggests that good relations can exist and have a positive impact on the exchange of knowledge across the “science”—“society” divide. This article is a first attempt to map the contact points between fisheries scientists and lay people and to explore the spin-offs these can have. It presents the results of two surveys conducted with participants at the November 2015 MYFISH/ICES Symposium on “Targets and limits for long term fisheries management”: a real-time Kahoot survey of the audience and a longer, on-line survey some participants filled out following the symposium session. The survey results generally support the supposition that fisheries scientist-society interactions are extremely varied and that much in the way of information exchange and mutual learning can occur. However they also show that trust issues remain in the fisheries management community, but not just between scientists and lay people: fisheries managers and environmental non-governmental organizations may be less trusted by scientists than are lay people. The study concludes by discussing how future studies should be designed and focused and with an invitation for comments from the ICES community.

Abstract Setting out an international standard schema for the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus and providing accurate data with realistic reports for investment through a simple application is essential for our real world. This research presents a tool to help anyone who wants to invest in environmental projects, especially water, energy, or food projects. The user can directly connect to a database of environmental data applying WEF nexus principles. This paper is looking for a mechanism to apply the WEF nexus concept through a web-based platform implementing unified concepts and terminology, setting basic criteria and standards, and making the data available, consistent, and homogeneous. Based on the problem statement, the purpose of this research is to implement a cross-application for sustainable development, including WEF nexus concepts, taking into consideration the interlinkage between the three resources integrated with a business model or financial study for projects. In addition, we have determined organizational perspectives of WEF nexus, including government entities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, and consolidated all the concepts into one set of WEF standards. Increasing the awareness of WEF nexus will help to establish a new generation of researchers who believe in the WEF nexus concepts and who will coordinate with developers and expert consultants to convert the WEF standards to programming coding.

The role of conceptual business model of an enterprise and its adaptability to the principles of the circular economy are investigated in this paper. It is determined that the idea of closed-loop economy is not new, but lately it has become popular due to political support of individual countries and international non-governmental organizations. In particular, in Germany, China and Japan the guidelines concerning circular economy are being developed at the national level. The main principles of the circular economy, which include the processes of recovery, sharing, optimization, cyclicality, virtualization and exchange, are investigated. It is clarified that, despite the growing interest of scientists and experts in the concept of circular economy, there are no standardized methods of its quantitative and qualitative measurement with the possibility of application at the enterprise level. Thus, comprehensive research on business models designing is required in order to stimulate and foster the circular economy implementation. The scientific papers on framework approaches to the circular economy resulting in the fresh perspective – the separation of economic growth from environmental wastes are analyzed. The stages of gradual introduction of circular economy paradigm implementation into practical activity, including processes of monitoring, estimation, actions at different levels of implementation are outlined. It is established that in the recent scientific works concerning closed-loop economy the framework for further circular economy implementation is reduced to the processes, materials and strategies, particularly to the consumer role. It is found out that any model can be both linear and circular describing the ability of the company to optimize its processes, virtualize products or delivery channels. The possibilities of applying the principles of circular economy to the Canvas business model by means of attracting additional blocks related to future availability of reverse logistics and the need for systematic approach for matching value proposition and customer segments, cost structure and revenue sources are summarized.

Substantial efforts and investments are being made to increase the scale and improve the effectiveness of marine conservation globally. Though it is mandated by international law and central to conservation policy, less attention has been given to how to operationalize social equity in and through the pursuit of marine conservation. In this article, we aim to bring greater attention to this topic through reviewing how social equity can be better integrated in marine conservation policy and practice. Advancing social equity in marine conservation requires directing attention to: recognition through acknowledgment and respect for diverse peoples and perspectives; fair distribution of impacts through maximizing benefits and minimizing burdens; procedures through fostering participation in decision-making and good governance; management through championing and supporting local involvement and leadership; the environment through ensuring the efficacy of conservation actions and adequacy of management to ensure benefits to nature and people; and the structural barriers to and institutional roots of inequity in conservation. We then discuss the role of various conservation organizations in advancing social equity in marine conservation and identify the capacities these organizations need to build. We urge the marine conservation community, including governments, non-governmental organizations and donors, to commit to the pursuit of socially equitable conservation.
