Abstract Type II string theory or M-theory contains a broad spectrum of gauge potentials. In addition to the standard $p$-form potentials, various mixed-symmetry potentials have been predicted, which may couple to exotic branes with non-standard tensions. Together with $p$-forms, mixed-symmetry potentials turn out to be essential to build the multiplets of the $U$-duality symmetry in each dimension. In this paper, we systematically determine the set of mixed-symmetry potentials and exotic branes on the basis of the $E_{11}$ conjecture. We also study the decompositions of $U$-duality multiplets into $T$-duality multiplets and determine which mixed-symmetry tensors are contained in each of the $U$-/$T$-duality multiplets.

U-duality symmetry of M-theory and S- and T-duality of string theory can be used to study various black brane solutions. We explore some aspect of this idea here. This symmetry can be used to get relations among various components of the metric of the black brane. These relations in turn give relations among various components of the energy–momentum tensor. We show that, using these relations, without knowing the explicit form of form fields, we can get the black brane solutions. These features were studied previously in the context of M-theory. Here, we extensively studied them in string theory (type II supergravity). We also show that this formulation works for exotic branes. We give an example of a time-dependent system where this method is essential.

We extend our earlier work on the possible microscopic origin of the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy to higher-dimensional space–times. The mechanism of counting chain-like states is shown to work for space–times with event horizon wrapped by a Euclidean doublet (E1,M1)+(E2,M2) of electric–magnetic dual brane pairs of type II string-theory or M-theory. Noncommutativity on the brane worldvolume enters naturally the derivation of the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy including the correct prefactor. Moreover, a logarithmic correction with prefactor 1/2 is predicted.

We obtain explicit time-dependent brane solutions in M-theory as well as in string theory by solving the reduced equations of motion (which follow, as in Int. J. Mod. Phys. A17, 4647 (2002), from 11-dimensional supergravity) for a class of brane solutions in curved backgrounds. The behavior of our solutions in both asymptotic and near-horizon limits are studied. It is shown that our time-dependent solutions serve as explicit examples of branes in singular, cosmological backgrounds. In some special cases the asymptotic and the boundary AdS solutions can be identified as Milne × Rn space–time.

Duality symmetries have played a key role in the discovery that the five consistent superstring theories in 10 dimensions emerge as different corners of the moduli space of a single unifying theory, known as M-theory. Focusing on the target space, or T, duality symmetry, we show how it can be formulated in spacetimes with abelian and non-abelian isometries. Finally, we discuss some recent work that realizes non-abelian T-duality as a consistent truncation to seven-dimensional supergravity, thus generalizing to the non-abelian case the realization of abelian T-duality at the supergravity level.

Fournier’s Gangrene is a type II necrotizing fascitis that leads to thrombosis of small subcutaneous vessels and spreads through the perianal and genital regions and the skin of the perineal. Most cases have a perianal or colorectal focus and in a smaller proportion it originates from the urogenital tract. The mortality rate varies between 7.8 and 50%1-3, only timely diagnosis decreases the morbidity and mortality of this condition. Treatment includes surgical debridement of all necrotic tissue and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. We compute the exact effective string vacuum backgrounds of the level k=81/19 SU(2,1)/U(1) coset model. A compact SU(2) isometry present in this seven-dimensional solution allows one to interpret it after compactification as a four-dimensional non-Abelian SU(2) charged instanton with a singular submanifold and an SO(3) × U(1) isometry. The semiclassical backgrounds, solutions of the type II strings, present similar characteristics

Abstract We derive general BPS boundary conditions in two-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) supersymmetric gauge theories. We analyze the solutions of these boundary conditions, and in particular those that allow the bulk fields to have poles at the boundary. We also present the brane configurations for the half- and quarter-BPS boundary conditions of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) supersymmetric gauge theories in terms of branes in Type IIA string theory. We find that both A-type and B-type brane configurations are lifted to M-theory as a system of M2-branes ending on an M5-brane wrapped on a product of a holomorphic curve in ℂ2 with a special Lagrangian 3-cycle in ℂ3.

The main purpose of this paper is to show and introduce some new interpretative aspects of the concept of “emergent space” as geometric/topological approach in the cosmological field. We will present some possible applications of this theory, among which the possibility of considering a non-orientable wormhole, but mainly we provide a topological interpretation, using this new approach, to M-Theory and String Theory in 10 dimensions. Further, we present some conclusions which this new interpretation suggests, and also some remarks considering a unifying approach between strings and dark matter. The approach shown in the paper considers that reality, as it appears to us, can be the “emerging” part of a more complex hidden structure. Abstract Canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory give rise to superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 5d and 4d, respectively. In this paper, we study canonical hypersurface singularities whose resolutions contain residual terminal singularities and/or 3-cycles. We focus on a certain class of ‘trinion’ singularities which exhibit these properties. In Type IIB, they give rise to 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 SCFTs that we call $$ {D}_p^b $$ D p b (G)-trinions, which are marginal gaugings of three SCFTs with G flavor symmetry. In order to understand the 5d physics of these trinion singularities in M-theory, we reduce these 4d and 5d SCFTs to 3d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 theories, thus determining the electric and magnetic quivers (or, more generally, quiverines). In M-theory, residual terminal singularities give rise to free sectors of massless hypermultiplets, which often are discretely gauged. These free sectors appear as ‘ugly’ components of the magnetic quiver of the 5d SCFT. The 3-cycles in the crepant resolution also give rise to free hypermultiplets, but their physics is more subtle, and their presence renders the magnetic quiver ‘bad’. We propose a way to redeem the badness of these quivers using a class $$ \mathcal{S} $$ S realization. We also discover new S-dualities between different $$ {D}_p^b $$ D p b (G)-trinions. For instance, a certain E8 gauging of the E8 Minahan-Nemeschansky theory is S-dual to an E8-shaped Lagrangian quiver SCFT.

Abstract A bubble of nothing is a spacetime instability where a compact dimension collapses. After nucleation, it expands at the speed of light, leaving “nothing” behind. We argue that the topological and dynamical mechanisms which could protect a compactification against decay to nothing seem to be absent in string compactifications once supersymmetry is broken. The topological obstruction lies in a bordism group and, surprisingly, it can disappear even for a SUSY-compatible spin structure. As a proof of principle, we construct an explicit bubble of nothing for a T3 with completely periodic (SUSY-compatible) spin structure in an Einstein dilaton Gauss-Bonnet theory, which arises in the low-energy limit of certain heterotic and type II flux compactifications. Without the topological protection, supersymmetric compactifications are purely stabilized by a Coleman-deLuccia mechanism, which relies on a certain local energy condition. This is violated in our example by the nonsupersymmetric GB term. In the presence of fluxes this energy condition gets modified and its violation might be related to the Weak Gravity Conjecture.We expect that our techniques can be used to construct a plethora of new bubbles of nothing in any setup where the low-energy bordism group vanishes, including type II compactifications on CY3, AdS flux compactifications on 5-manifolds, and M-theory on 7-manifolds. This lends further evidence to the conjecture that any non-supersymmetric vacuum of quantum gravity is ultimately unstable.
