Background: A systematic review was performed to identify the types of physical activities effective as interventions in preventing metabolic syndrome in middle-aged women. Methods: Electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL) served as the data sources. Cochrane’s Risk of Bias 2 was applied to assess the risk of bias of the randomized controlled trials. Meta-analyses were performed on selected studies using Review Manager 5.3. Thirty-one trials enrolling 2,202 participants were included. Results: Compared to controls, the effects of physical activity were indicated by pooled mean differences, which were −0.57 kg for body weight, −0.43 kg/m2 for body mass index, −1.63 cm for waist circumference, −4.89 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (BP), and −2.71 mmHg for diastolic BP. The effects were greater on the measurements of waist circumference and BP than on body weight and BMI. The types of physical activities were further analyzed according to sub-groups. Only aerobic exercise did not affect body weight and resistance exercise did not significantly change any results. Contrarily, combined exercises significantly reduced measurements of waist circumference and BP. Conclusion: This review can provide valuable information for research and implementation of measures to prevent metabolic syndrome in middle-aged women.

1068 randomly sampled adult Bangladeshi people were studied during a period of six months from October 2004 to March 2005. It was a randomized, prospective study. Cases that fulfilled two criteria of metabolic syndrome (MetS) were evaluated to see pattern and types of MetS. Out of 1068 patients, 110 (10.3%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. 101 (9.4%) cases were labeled as metabolic syndrome according to NCEP ATP III criteria, 09 cases had only two criteria. 40 cases were male & 70 cases were female (M:F= 1:1.8). Mean age of patients with was 44.88, ranging from the age of 20-68 years. Majority (55%) of the patients were in the age group of 30-49 years. Half of the cases had BMI 30-34.9. Mean body weight of male was 85.9 kg and of female was 78.2 kg. Mean waist circumference of male was 41.7 inches and of female 40 inches. Mean HDL for male was 38.3 mg/dL and for female is 40.2 mg/dL. Mean Triglyceride for male was 172.1 and for female was 169.3 mg/dL. Mean total cholesterol for male was 216.7 and for female was 207.6 mg/dL. Mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) for men is 162 mm Hg & diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 99 mm Hg and for female mean SBP 155 and DBP 96 mm Hg. Metabolic syndrome is more prevalent in the 3rd and 4th decade of life in both sexes. It is almost twice common in female than male. Heme oxygenase (HO) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the metabolism of heme-releasing bioactive molecules carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin, and iron, each with beneficial cardiovascular actions. Biliverdin is rapidly reduced to bilirubin, a potent antioxidant, by the enzyme biliverdin reductase, and iron is rapidly sequestered by ferritin in the cell. Several studies have demonstrated that HO-1 induction can attenuate the development of hypertension as well as lower blood pressure in established hypertension in both genetic and experimental models. HO-1 induction can also reduce target organ injury and can be beneficial in cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke. Recent studies have also identified a beneficial role for HO-1 in the regulation of body weight and metabolism in diabetes and obesity. Chronic HO-1 induction lowers body weight and corrects hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. Chronic HO-1 induction also modifies the phenotype of adipocytes in obesity from one of large, cytokine producing to smaller, adiponectin producing. Finally, chronic induction of HO-1 increases oxygen consumption, CO2, and heat production and activity in obese mice. This review will discuss the current understanding of the actions of the HO system to lower blood pressure and body weight and how HO or its metabolites may be ideal candidates for the development of drugs that can both reduce blood pressure and lower body weight.

Introduction: Tai Chi and walking are both moderate-intensity physical activity (PA) that can be easily practiced in daily life. The purpose of this study was to better understand that after practicing these two types of PAs in a relative short term and keeping the stable dietary intake in this period, how much body weight would be reduced and what extent the metabolic syndrome parameters would be improved; and if a significant weight loss was observed, whether this exercise-induced weight loss had adverse effect on bone mineral density (BMD). Methods: Three-hundred seventy-four healthy and physically inactive adults (45.8±5.3 years) from 9 geographic areas in Hong Kong were randomized to 12 weeks training (45 minutes per day, 5 days per week) of Tai Chi (n=124) or self-paced walking (n=121), or control group (n=129) at area level. Body weight, fat and lean mass, waist circumference, blood pressure and regional BMD, as well as the fasting blood samples were obtained at the beginning and end of trial. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides were analyzed. Results: On average, Tai Chi and walking groups lost 0.50 and 0.76 kg of body weight, 0.47 and 0.59 kg of fat mass, respectively (all p<0.001). No significant changes were observed for lean mass and BMD. Two intervention groups had significant improvements in waist circumference and FBG. The between-group difference of waist circumference and FBG was -3.7 cm and -0.18 mmol/L for Tai Chi vs. control; and -4.1 cm and -0.22 mmol/L for walking vs. control (all p<0.001). No significant differences were observed regarding blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides compared to control (all p>0.05). The effects on all outcomes between Tai Chi and walking were similar (all p>0.05). Among intervention groups, change in lean mass, not fat mass or total weight loss, was significantly correlated to the change in BMD. Conclusions: 12-week Tai Chi and walking exercises can produce moderate weight loss and improve the waist circumference and FBG in middle-aged Hong Kong Chinese people, with no additional effects on BMD.

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare equivalent amounts of two choline sources on plasma cholesterol and the parameters of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults aged 32 to 70 years. Methods Twenty-three subjects with MetS participated in this randomized, crossover clinical trial. Subjects underwent an initial period of 2 weeks without consuming any eggs, followed by a random allocation to consume either 3 eggs/day or a choline-bitartrate supplement for 4 weeks (choline equivalent of ∼400 mg/day for both interventions). After a 3 week washout period, participants were allocated to the alternate diet. We measured body weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma lipids and glucose at the beginning and end of each dietary intervention and after the washout period. Three-day dietary and exercise records were collected concurrently with these measurements. Compliance was assessed weekly by self-reported consumed product. Results There was a 90% compliance among subjects. No differences in physical activity were reported between periods. Dietary records indicated that subjects were consuming more fat (P &lt; 0.001), more protein (P &lt; 0.009) and fewer carbohydrates (P &lt; 0.001) and more cholesterol (P &lt; 0.001) during the egg period. When dietary fat was analyzed separately, there were no differences in intake of saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids. In contrast, consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids, known to lower plasma cholesterol, was higher during the egg compared to the supplement period (31.2 ± 11.2 vs. 24.3 ± 10.9 g/d), reflecting the fatty acid composition of eggs. Surprisingly, although dietary cholesterol was higher during the egg period, plasma total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol were not different between treatments or when compared to baseline (P &gt; 0.05). LDL cholesterol was 111.4 ± 20.5 mg/dL during the egg and 110.8 ± 21.4 during the supplement period. Percent changes in LDL from baseline were +2.4% for eggs (P = 0.375) and +6.7% for choline (P = 0.111). Similarly, blood pressure, plasma glucose and insulin did not differ between periods (P &gt; 0.05). Body weight and waist circumference did not change. Conclusions This study indicates that in this population with MetS, consumption of 3 eggs/day for 4 weeks did not increase a select group of biomarkers associated with increased risk for heart disease. The associations of lifestyle and environment with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease have recently resulted in increased attention in research. This study aimed to examine interactive associations among carbohydrate and fat intake, physical environment (i.e., elevation and humidity), lifestyle, and MetS among Ecuadorian adults. We used data from the Ecuador National Health and Nutrition Survey 2012 (ENSANUT-ECU), with a total of 6023 participants aged 20 to 60 years included in this study. Logistic regression was used to determine the association of status of carbohydrate and fat intake, low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCHF) and medium-carbohydrate and fat (MCF) diet with MetS, where the high-carbohydrate low-fat (HCLF) diet was used as a reference. Women with LCHF and MCF diets showed lower prevalence of increased blood pressure (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.19–0.59; OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32–0.79, respectively). Women with MCF diet also showed lower prevalence of elevated fasting glucose (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37–0.91). Moreover, there were negative associations between MetS and reduced HDL cholesterol in women with MCF diet residing in low relative humidity (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.45–0.98) and in women with LCHF diet residing at a high elevation (OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.16–0.86). Additionally, higher prevalence of increased waist circumference was observed in men with both MFC and LCHF diets who were physically inactive (OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.12–3.20; OR = 2.34, 95% CI: 1.19–4.60, respectively) and residing in high relative humidity (OR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.08–2.89; OR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.32–5.28, respectively). Our findings suggest that LCHF intake is associated with lower blood pressure, while MCF intake is associated with lower blood pressure and fasting glucose in Ecuadorian women. Furthermore, the associations of carbohydrate and fat intake with prevalence of MetS can be modified by physical activity, relative humidity, and elevation. The obtained outcomes may provide useful information for health programs focusing on dietary intake and lifestyle according to physical environment of the population to promote health and prevent metabolic diseases.

Background: In order to evaluate the effects of licorice flavonoid oil (LFO) on waist circumference, blood pressure, lipid profile, body fat composition, body weight, body mass index (BMI), and fasting blood glucose in patients with metabolic syndrome, a 12 week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study was conducted. Methods: Fifty patients with metabolic syndrome aged between 18-75 years were assigned to either the LFO or placebo group. Abdominal waist circumference, blood pressure, body weight, and BMI were assessed at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12. Clinical laboratory examinations, fat composition, and fasting blood glucose level were assessed at baseline (week 0) and final visit (week 12).Results: A total of 50 subjects (25 subjects in each group) completed the 12 week study. Significant changes from baseline were observed in body weight, waist circumference, and BMI in the LFO group compared to the placebo group from week 4 or week 8 onwards. No adverse events were noted throughout the study. Conclusion: The present study suggests that LFO is a promising dietary nutrient for improving metabolic syndrome, particularly through its beneficial effect of reducing body weight, BMI, and possibly the amount of visceral fat. Keywords: licorice flavonoid oil; Glycyrrhiza glabra L.; metabolic syndrome; body mass index

Introduction. Gdue is a nutraceutical obtained from the association of two marine algae, Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus, in addition to chromium picolinate, which could be useful for the treatment of dysglycemia, overweight, and the other components of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of the study was to assess the real-world effectiveness and safety of Gdue when administered to subjects with one or more components of the metabolic syndrome. Methods. A longitudinal, retrospective, observational study, conducted among primary care physicians, nutritionists, and specialists from various disciplines. The impact of 180 days of administration of Gdue was assessed on body weight, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, and blood pressure levels. The likelihood of experiencing a first major cardiovascular event over ten years was estimated using Italian risk charts. General linear models for repeated measures were applied to assess changes in the parameters of interest during the follow-up. Results are expressed as estimated marginal means with their 95% confidence interval. Results. Overall, 505 patients were enrolled by 282 physicians. After 6 months of treatment with Gdue, body weight was reduced on average by 7.3 kg (-8.0; -6.6), waist circumference by 7.5 cm (-8.2; -6.8), fasting blood glucose by 16.3 mg/dL (-17.8; -14.7), HbA1c by 0.55% (-0.62; -0.49), systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 7.1 mmHg (-8.3; -6.0) and 4.2 mmHg (-5.0; -3.5), respectively, LDL cholesterol by 18.2 mg/dL (-21.2; -15.3), and triglycerides by 39 mg/dL (-45; -32). HDL cholesterol was significantly increased by 2.9 mg/dL (0.7; 5.0). The 10-year risk of cardiovascular events significantly decreased by 1.8%, corresponding to a relative risk reduction of 27.7%. Conclusion. Our real-world study shows that 6 months of treatment with Gdue have an impact on all the components of the metabolic syndrome, thus offering the potential for decreasing the cardiovascular risk associated with metabolic syndrome.

Androgen-dependent dermopathy, as well as premenstrual syndrome of varying severity in young women, can cause emotional depression, difficulties in social adaptation and even depressive disorders. The aim of the study was to study the safety and efficacy of using a combined oral contraceptive (COC) Dimia® containing 20 μg ethinyl estradiol and 3 mg drospirenone in young women, as well as its therapeutic effects in androgen-dependent dermopathy. Materials and methods. The study included 57 young women aged 23.1±2.2 years with signs of androgen-dependent dermopathy. The evaluation of the change in the character of menstrual bleeding, the anthropometric parameters (body weight, waist circumference and hips), the therapeutic effect of the drug on the symptoms of androgen-dependent dermopathy, as well as the dynamics of arterial pressure, hemoglobin level, serum iron have been studied. The psycho-emotional state was assessed using the SAN questionnaire (well-being-activity-mood). Results. During 6 months of observation, there was no significant change in the body mass index, waist circumference, and hips, and the drug did not affect the blood pressure numbers. Against the background of taking the drug, there was an increase in the parameters of iron metabolism (hemoglobin content, serum iron). After 3 months of taking the contraceptive with drospirenone, the number of patients with a complaint about the abundance of menstruation decreased more than twofold (from 22.8 to 10.5%), and after 6 months of taking the drug no patient noted the profuse nature of menstruation. Before the start of taking COC with drospirenone, 57.9% of women reported painful menstrual bleeding. Against the background of taking the contraceptive within 3 months, this complaint was stopped in all patients. Sufficient efficacy of treatment of androgen dependent dermopathy in young women with the help of a microdosed drospirenone-containing combined oral contraceptive is estimated from the dermatological acne index. The analysis of the SAN questionnaire made it possible to reveal the improvement in the psychoemotional state of patients on the background of taking the drug. The conclusion. The results obtained proved the effectiveness and safety of the microclinized COC Dimia®. The drug has no significant effect on body weight, blood pressure, provides reliable control of the cycle and a decrease in menstrual bleeding, which results in stabilization of iron metabolism in the body. Dimia® is effective in the treatment of androgen-dependent dermopathy and can be recommended to young women for starting contraception.
