Assessment of nutritional behavior of Polish pupils and students

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess nutritional habits and body composition parameters in the group of Polish pupils and students. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted by the body composition analysis using the biological impedance method applying TANITA analyzer and diagnostic survey method using standardized direct interview with selected elements of the Sarzynska test. The research was carried out in various regions of Poland on a group of 1,000 pupils and students, using a targeted sample selection in the following subgroups: 250 middle school pupils, 250 high school students, 250 students living in a family home and 250 students living in an academic home. Findings Significantly the worst nutritional habits according to the Sarzynska test are shown by students living in academic home. As many as 21.6 percent of them eat very badly, while only 10.4 percent of students living in a family home eat very badly. This may indicate a lack of conditions, skills and time to prepare healthy meals, but also the lack of parental control in relation to what their child eats. The middle school pupils eat the healthiest meals (64.4 percent). It can be seen the regularity that the older the child is, the smaller the percentage of people in the healthy group. Research limitations/implications A research limitation was the little sample size of the study (1,000 person) and participants might have felt uncomfortable during research. Practical implications People planning class schedules should also plan breaks for a full-value meal. It is necessary to organize affordable courses that would teach simple and fast food preparation that does not require a lot of equipment and little popular ingredients. It would also be necessary to draw parents’ attention to excessive care and the fact that not allowing children to “experiment” in the kitchen may arouse in them the reluctance and fear of cooking. Social implications Among students, one should conduct universal education regarding a healthy lifestyle, which should focus on the subject of proper nutrition and physical activity, because there are no systemic solutions that would include adults. In order to improve nutritional habits, social rooms in academic homes should be adjusted so that students have the conditions to prepare nutritious meals, as well as provide access to canteens, where students would receive a reasonable meal at a reasonable price. The qualifications of the staff working there should also be improved. Originality/value The present study adds to the existing body of literature nutritional habits and body composition parameters in the group of Polish pupils and students. The results are the foundation for providing recommendations to policy makers, universitets, schools, food organizations and parents.

Aim: Body composition, especially the mass of adipose tissue, affects the risk of developing the metabolic and cardiovascular diseases as well as some cancers. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the body composition of adults and their Body Mass Index. Material/Methods: The study involved 120 subjects (69 women and 51 men) aged 19 – 66 (30.55 ± 10.41). The recruited subjects were assigned to three subgroups: with normal body weight, overweight and obesity, depending on the BMI value. There were 40 subjects in each subgroup, including 23 women and 17 men. Besides the measurements of height and body mass, the SECA mBCA515 analyser was applied for the body composition analysis using the bioelectric impedance method. Results: A significant association was found between the BMI index and fat mass, lean mass and muscle mass, both in the whole group and after taking into account the sex. The correlation coefficient R range was from –0.88 to 0.97. The incidence of obesity in the studied group according to body fat content criteria (>25% for men and >30% for women) was 57%, while according to BMI criteria –33%. BMI cut-off points for obesity were 27.8, 26.4 and 26.4 kg/m2 for men, women and for all, respectively. Conclusions: In epidemiological studies, to identify obese people, body fat should also be taken into account in addition to BMI. If obesity is understood as excess fat, and not excess weight, the cut-off points for BMI-based obesity should be lowered.

Body composition analysis is relevant to characterize the nutritional requirements and finishing phase of fish. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between ichthyometric (weight, total and standard length, density and yields), bromatological (fat, protein, ash and water content) and bioelectrical-impedance-analysis (BIA) (resistance, reactance, phase angle and composition indexes) variables in the hybrid tambatinga (Colossoma macropomum × Piaractus brachypomus). In a non-fertilized vivarium, 520 juveniles were housed and fed commercial rations. Then, 136 days after hatching (DAH), 15 fish with an average weight of 37.69 g and average total length of 12.96 cm were randomly chosen, anesthetized (eugenol) and subjected to the first of fourteen fortnightly assessments (BIA and biometry). After euthanasia, the following parts were weighed: whole carcass with the head, fillet, and skin (WC); fillet with skin (FS); and the remainder of the carcass with the head (CH). Together, FS and CH were ground and homogenized for the bromatological analyses. Estimates of the body composition and yields of tambatinga, with models including ichthyometric and BIA variables, showed correlation coefficients ranging from 0.81 (for the FS yield) to 1,00 (for the total ash). Similarly, models that included only BIA variables had correlation coefficients ranging from 0.81 (FS and CH yields) to 0.98 (for the total ash). Therefore, in tambatinga, the BIA technique allows the estimation of the yield of the fillet with skin and the body composition (water content, fat, ash, and protein). The best models combine ichthyometric and BIA variables.

Several approaches have been used to assess protein-energy wasting syndrome, such as clinical evaluation, biochemical nutritional markers, anthropometric measurements, but Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) techniques hold a central place in clinical settings. The aim of this study is to report our clinical experience with BIA and the correlations between biochemical nutritional markers and BIA nutritional parameters in hemodialysis (HD) patients associating or free of chronic liver disease. This cross-sectional observational study included 69 HD patients divided into two groups: 33 with chronic liver disease (CLD+) versus 36 chronic liver disease-free (CLD-) from one HD unit in Romania. Serum albumin (SA), serum creatinine (SCr) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were obtained from the HD arterial line immediately before the HD session and by BIA the body composition including total body water (TBW), total body fat (TBF), lean fat free mass(LFFM), body muscular mass (BMM), malnutrition index and body protein reserve (PR) were assessed. No significant differences between groups were found in BCM, BMM, PR and TBF (p = 0.92, p = 0.60, p = 0.907, and p = 0.634, respectively). Malnutrition index had a significantly higher mean value in HD-CLD(+) patients (p = 0.00). HD-CLD(-) group showed a strong correlation between SA and SCr and BCM, BMM (kg), LFFM (kg) and body PR (kg) (r=.48, r=.50, r=.44, r=.50; resp. r=.42, r=.40, r=.36, r=.42). In HD-CLD(+) patients, a significant positive correlation was found between SA and SCr and LFFM and body PR (r=.37, r=.35; resp. r=.44, r=.35). Discussion: BIA is one of the most accurate techniques for assessing nutritional status and should be regularly used in clinical practice along with biochemical nutritional markers in HD patients. Although the protein metabolism depends to a large extent on liver function, CLD cannot be considered as having a significant impact on nutritional status in HD patients.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Online hemodiafiltration (HDF) therapy has been recognized as one of the potential dialysis modalities. However, the long-term effects of online HDF therapy on very elderly dialysis patients older than 75 years have yet to be fully elucidated. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Seventy-four very elderly patients older than 75 years undergoing maintenance dialysis therapy were studied retrospectively. Twenty-four (mean ± SE, 81.5 ± 1.0 years) were treated by predilution online HDF, and fifty (81.2 ± 0.6 years) were treated by conventional hemodialysis (HD) for 3 years. Laboratory data related to the nutritional state and lipid profile were collected. Body composition was measured by a bioelectrical impedance method. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Dry weight and body mass index decreased in HD patients (2.9%, <i>p</i> = 0.003 and 3.1%, <i>p</i> = 0.001, respectively), while no significant changes were found in online HDF patients. Serum albumin levels reduced in both HD and online HDF groups (3.5%, <i>p</i> = 0.003 and 2.9%, <i>p</i> = 0.026, respectively). The geriatric nutritional risk index decreased in HD patients (3.0%, <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), while no significant change was shown in online HDF patients. Body composition analysis demonstrated a significant decrease in intracellular water and increases in extracellular water and edema ratio in both groups. Fat mass and %fat showed significant decreases in HD patients (8.1%, <i>p</i> = 0.003 and 7.3%, <i>p</i> = 0.003, respectively), but no significant changes in online HDF patients. Among laboratory data, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels did not change in HD patients. However, the levels elevated significantly (10.6%, <i>p</i> = 0.03) in online HDF patients. <b><i>Discussion/Conclusion:</i></b> These results indicated that the time-dependent deterioration of the nutritional state in very elderly dialysis patients was inevitable; however, such deterioration was not prominent in online HDF patients. Moreover, the lipid profile showed unique changes in online HDF patients. In order to treat very elderly dialysis patients, online HDF should preferentially be taken into consideration because the maintenance of general condition seems to be a practical goal against the natural time-dependent deterioration.

Regular exercise during school hours is encouraged; however many children and adolescents fail to meet the recommendations during this time. Extracurricular activities may be a more appealing way for youth to achieve guidelines, and it is recommended that they attend two sessions each week. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of participation in a national physical activity program accompanied by nutritional education for trainers on the risk of obesity and body composition in a nationwide sample of boys and girls, after one year of intervention. The #goathletics Study was conducted in a group of 1014 adolescents aged 12–13: 507 individuals for the Athletics for All program (210 boys, 297 girls) and 507 pair-matched individuals not participating in any physical activity program (matching including: gender, age, city of residence). The body mass (kg), Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg/m2), waist circumference (WC) (cm), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (-) and body composition (%) (measured using bioelectrical impedance method) were compared in a gender-related sub-groups using t-Student test (for parametric distributions) or Mann-Whitney U test (for nonparametric distributions) and chi2 test (for the share of sub-groups). After one year of intervention, lower body mass percentile, BMI percentile, WC, WHtR and fat mass share, higher muscle mass share, as well as lower frequency of overweight/obesity and abdominal fat distribution were observed both for boys and girls participating in the physical activity intervention compared to the pair-matched controls. The after-school physical activity program accompanied by nutritional education for trainers may be a highly effective method for reducing the risk of obesity both for boys and girls, as regular participation is ensured.

Abstract Background Budesonide is an oral corticosteroid, which is widely used in moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis (UC) to obtain and maintain remission in those cases, where 5-aminosalicylic-acid was ineffective. Unlike previous forms of budesonide absorbing from the ileal and ascending colon region, the new-generation budesonide-MMX contains a formula, that allows absorption throughout the whole colon, and therefore in the whole potentially inflamed area in UC. We aimed to evaluate the effects and safety of budesonide-MMX in our UC patients who meet the above mentioned therapeutic demands in a real-life study. Methods We enrolled 22 patients with mild to severe UC in this single-centre prospective study until August of 2019. Patients received 9 mg oral budesonide-MMX once daily until 8 weeks. Laboratory parameters (cholesterol, triglyceride, CRP) and serum hormone levels (parathormone [PTH], dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA] and cortisol) were monitored before and after the 8-week therapy to follow metabolic and hormonal changes. During these visits, body composition analysis was also performed with InBody 770 machine to observe the adverse steroid effects of budesonide-MMX in respect of body fat mass, body mass index, protein content of the body and bone mineral content. Disease activity was followed by the partial Mayo (pMayo) score. Statistical analysis was performed by paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test with SigmaPlot 1.25. Results The total of 22 patients (age: 44.4 ± 15.1 years, 6 male and 16 female patients) had received the 2-month budesonide-MMX therapy (2.0 ± 0.3 months). Mean disease duration was 8.3 years. By the end of follow-up, 15 (68.2%) patients experienced remission and 7 patients (31.8%) were primary non-responders. The disease activity decreased significantly from the mean of 3.95 to 1.64 (p &lt; 0.001). No significant changes were observable in case of any body composition analysis parameter. Regarding the laboratory parameters, serum cholesterin level showed a significant increase (p &lt; 0.001), while triglyceride and CRP showed did not show significant changes. Serum cortisol levels were elevated (p &lt; 0.001), while PTH and DHEA showed no significant decrease. Only two patients experienced side effects: one of them hypertonia, headache and acnes, while the other patient experienced mild diarrhoea. One patient had a relapse during the treatment. Conclusion In our study, budesonide-MMX proved to be safe by bringing up a low number of side effects, while more than two-thirds of the patients could reach remission with this short-term therapy. Hormonal changes were not mentionable, although the drug’s effects on serum lipid content have to be examined further.
